Re: JAWS Scripting for a new application
Peter Holdstock <ptrholdstock@...>
There's a good idea John. WLM is used by many but has it's very silly querks and it would be great if we could get an email client working perfectly well with JAWS. I reckon it would only take you a day or so to fix everything as much of it is stupid stuff like graphics not been labelled so the user has to do it themselves so it will then identify unread messages, collapsed conversations etc and the calendar function isn't ideal. Could be a quick bit of work and create many happy JAWS users. That said I know I and many others have repeatedly reported these issues to FS including during the JAWS 13 beta so hopefully they'll get off their backsides and fix them.

It seems as if it is utilizing ribbons instead of a menu bar, so I'm stuck with a not-so-good way of changing my settings. Also the spell check is horrible because it just tells the word that it wants to change to, not the misspelled word. I don't think this problem was on the old Windows Live Mail but I don't know how to get an earlier version of WLM. Subject: RE: JAWS Scripting for a new application At the risk of starting a conflagration of controversy, I would like to support the notion that John should get some remuneration for his hard work -- even if he charged for scripts. I know I would pay significantly for a set of scripts that made Google Docs accessable, though I think that is not feasible. The biggest single area of inaccessibility I encounter on my job is with respect to on-line collaboration. I have clients who regularly send invitations to go-to-meeting sessions where a document will be on the screen, albeit from the client's computer. We will be on the phone together, and sometimes the client will make edits he wants me to review, and sometimes he will say simply, "Here, I'll give you control. Why don't you revise this section on indemnification?" I accomplish this only with the assistance of my sighted secretary. Without her presence, I would be sunk. Serotek has something called Accessable Event, but that really doesn't cut it. Again, this may be an application of limited applicability, but I run into it all the time, and document collaboration is becoming more and more popular. I hear ads for Go-To-Meeting almost every time I tune into XM Radio, and note the popularity of Google Docs, not just because it is cheap, but also because it offers collaboration. This may simply be impossible and not everyone needs it, but if you need it, you need it bad. -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounces@lists.the-jdh.com [mailto:jfw-bounces@lists.the-jdh.com] On Behalf Of Chris Smart Sent: Sunday, October 23, 2011 2:11 PM To: The Jaws for Windows support list. Perhaps I'm overestimating the difficulty, but I certainly wouldn't want to do scripting without knowing programming. If you want to know what it's like, hit jaws key plus zero in a scripted application to read the scripts.

I have version 12 on both the local computer and on the server. I don't see this sticky key problem in any application except during remote access sessions. But as I said, when it happens it screws up an entire session, rendering the keyboard virtually inoperable to the point that I can't even properly reboot the system but have to turn it off and back on again. What you are describing and what others are describing are two different things. I had the problem with the remote access, and it is truly annoying. What version of JAWS are you using on your local computer and on the remote computer? If it is anything below version 12, I may be able to help. Debby

Is there another method for resetting the keyboard and unsticking the alt key? Re: Weird keyboard behavior during remote access
Curtis Delzer
JFW has had this issue for years where either the ALT key or the CONTROL keys stick. The only solution is to seriously, :) tap the offending key several times, and if on a remote machine, I don't know how you would do that from your location. :)
If it happens on your local machine, just tap the offending key many times and it clears up, eventually, though you'll have some weird key combinations before you figure out that there is a key sticking, not mechanically sticking, just electronically in JFW'S keyboard driver. I've not seen that in other screen readers, and it does not happen often with JFW, but when it does, you'll know. :) Curtis Delzer At 06:35 AM 10/24/2011, you wrote: Hi All,-------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Stuck modifier keys is a very common occurrence (at least for me with all my different versions of JAWS and hardware). It's been around since JAWS 3.5 and my old HP pavilion with Windows 2000. That said, it happens most often for me after using Openbook. Your case is not unusual. Don't reboot. Just alternately rapidly tap each of the modifier keys one at a time. e.g. left alt, right alt, left alt right alt etc. several times in succession. Then do the same with control, shift, and the windows keys. If you don't have one of these as a pair, just tap the individual key rapidly. This sounds crazy but it does unstick the key. It's not a mechanical problem. It's related to the key code decoding in the JAWS processing. At least that's what FS support has said for several years. That is whenever I press any key I first hear "alt" followed by the name of the key be that up arrow or whatever. The only way to unstick the alt key is to reboot the local computer. Is there another method for resetting the keyboard and unsticking the alt key? Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)
Thanks. The little research I was able to do over the weekend appeared

to indicate that it had to be used as an extension to the mail client, which I don't have, but I'll certainly check it out, in case I'm wrong. Ted

Re: JAWS Scripting for a new application
Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@...>
I think you are both probably right. I think Citrix does something similar, and that may be why, to make Citrix work, JAWS has to be installed two places: at the server and at the client.

Accessable Event gets pretty close, but it doesn't allow control to be switched or to follow the remote cursor. I wonder how Accessable Event does even as much as it does?

Re: JAWS Scripting for a new application
Peter Holdstock <ptrholdstock@...>
How about improving some of the natively supportive programmes such as Media Player, Media Centre (I'm sure there are many more) where FS quite clearly can easily fix a problem and make things more user friendly but for some reason they never do it no matter how many of us moan. It might make them realise they need to improve standards a little. That said I guess it would be controversial as of course you need to keep FS onboard to support whatever projects your doing.

Media Centre is annoying because it's a fantastic bit of software but there are a few places where NVDA reads much better than JAWS.

I was thinking about a music sound editor, but isn't soundforge already scripted? I wonder what the price of the software would be too since some of us have limited funds. I am hoping I can keep my scripts free actually. I'll find out in the weeks to come. If said application is something that some of us who work or are trying to find work need access to, maybe we should donate a little cash to John for his hard work and probably hundreds of hours spent scripting. Just a thought. Of course, any donations would be voluntary. -------------------------------------------------- CTS MASTERING: PROFESSIONAL MIXING AND MASTERING Clear True Sound www.ctsmastering.com and be sure to "like us" on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/CTS-Mastering/139114066128698 _______________________________________________ Jfw mailing list Jfw@lists.the-jdh.com http://lists.the-jdh.com/mailman/listinfo/jfw_lists.the-jdh.com ############################################################################ ################################# ANY FEDERAL TAX ADVICE CONTAINED IN THIS MESSAGE SHOULD NOT BE USED OR REFERRED TO IN THE PROMOTING, MARKETING OR RECOMMENDING OF ANY ENTITY, INVESTMENT PLAN OR ARRANGEMENT, AND SUCH ADVICE IS NOT INTENDED OR WRITTEN TO BE USED, AND CANNOT BE USED, BY A TAXPAYER FOR THE PURPOSE OF AVOIDING PENALTIES UNDER THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE. ############################################################################ ################################# This E-mail message is confidential, is intended only for the named recipient(s) above and may contain information that is privileged, attorney work product or otherwise protected by applicable law.
