Windows 10 newbee help needed

Chris Chaffin

I have a friend that has upgraded to windows 10 and is having a hard time learning how to get around. He is coming from windows 7, so the learning curve might be a little more. Is there a podcast or something out there that can help introduce him to windows 10? I do not know if it matters, but he is using the Jaws screen reader, version 17.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Re: Windscribe.

You might try two things, as follows.  First, in JAWS settings, you can find options for how buttons are read such as screen text, alt attribute an so on.  Try messing around with those.  Second, in JAWS Manager (ins+F2) and when on a button see what “window Class” is assigned.  Perhaps reassigning a non standard class to the standard “button” class fixes the problem.

Hi listers,
I just installed Windscribe on my laptop, running Win 10, Jaws 17. It appears as though this program isn't accessible with Jaws, all I'm hearing while tabbing around is button, button, button. Is there a way to possibly make this accessible, and if not, do you guys know of another free VPN?
Thanks, Shane.

Hi, Jim. Did you download the latest installer from the Freedom Scientific website, or did you use the update feature in JAWS? If you used the update feature of JAWS, this might be why ResearchIt is not working. I never use the update feature of JAWS for this reason.

the easiest way to send attachments using webmail

Ryan Coverdell

Two step verification is not checked so the reason why my windows live
mail won't configure must be something else. One other thing I'd
like to do that is the subject of this message is easily send
attachments using web-based e-mail. Currently it's rather complicated.
I can't simply type the file I want to attach and expect my computer
to find it. It seems to think I want to always send files from the
same default folder, and I have to mannually peck around and try to
get it to find somewhere new, or else put the file I want into the
default folder (which shouldn't have to be done), and send it. Could
some one explain in step by step detail an easy way to send
attachments via web-mail? Preferrably I'd like you to send it to me
personally as well as the list since I no longer receive the e-mails
from the list every day. Preferrably I'd like you to send e-mails
about both subject since I don't now know why my windows live mail
won't configure. Kind regards, Ryan Coverdell

I suspect that certain formatting is stripped by either servers or the program on receipt of email. For example, if I put headings such as Heading Level One in email, I can see them when I compose them, but if I CC myself, and the email comes back to me, they are often stripped out.

Outlook 2016 automatically replaces some punctuation marks with smileys, for instance :) is replaced with a smiling face, J, and :( with a frowning face, L. When I'm composing a message, JAWS reads these fine. But when I receive one, it reads a smiling face as J and a frowning face as L.

Is this what others get? Does anyone know a way to get them to be recognised properly in a message I receive?

Thanks,

Steve

I would not expect sapi4 to work. sapi4 is very different from sapi5.
As far as I know only sapi5 works with jaws.

Hi Jim,
I just tried the ResearchIt feature now to get weather results and
technology news stories. Both of these features seem to work fine
after today's update. I ran the update through the JAWS update
feature. Perhaps the look-ups you were trying to conduct may have been
down? I would try the look-up source again and if the problem persists
conduct a JAWS repair.
I hope that helps

Ribbons In Word

"Kevin Hourigan " <kevinthourigan@...>

Greetings All,

Using Jaws 17, today’s build, Windows 10, and Word 2016;

Is it just me, or have the ribbons in word gone mad.

I pressed control shift S to go to change a heading level to normal text, arrived at styles, but the list of headings was not there. I pressed Alt H, L, and arrived at the same place.  I pressed alt H, enter, (for if I did not press enter I would get the Tell Me What You Want To Do edit field), and tabbed around until I found the list of headings, normal text etc. I found a styles inspector dialog, (whatever that is), some headings reported to have a pop up, (what does one do with a pop up?), and tabbing and arrowing only works sporadically.

Cheers Kevin.

Latest J17.0.2619 Update Download Links, + What's New

Mike B. <mb69mach1@...>

Hi All,

Below are the direct download links for the latest Jaws update + what's new in this J17.0.2619 release.

32 Bit:

64 Bit:

What's new in this release:
Enhancements in JAWS 17.0.2619 (August 2016)

The following is a list of improvements made between the JAWS 17 July 2016 release and the August 2016 update.

list of 9 items
• Beginning with the Windows 10 Anniversary Edition released by Microsoft in August 2016, when JAWS starts, it now tells Windows 10 that you are using
JAWS and asks Windows to avoid forcing you into Edge when searching the web using Cortana. As a result, Cortana web searches will instead be done using
the default browser you have specified in Windows 10. This JAWS change will have no impact in prior Windows 10 releases.
• You can now use contracted braille input when typing in the Windows 10 Search edit box as well as in the edit fields in many Modern apps including the
Windows 10 Mail app.
• Resolved a customer reported issue where extraneous information was being spoken by JAWS when opening a message in Windows Live Mail.
• Addressed a customer reported issue with the SayTaskBar script not working as expected.
• Resolved a reported issue where JAWS was not correctly reading form fields on certain web pages in Internet Explorer 11.
• Addressed a reported issue where pressing keys on a braille display were sometimes triggering unexpected actions in various applications.
• When focused on a calendar appointment in Outlook 2013 and later, pressing INSERT+F1 now displays screen-sensitive help specific to the calendar as expected.
In addition, pressing INSERT+CTRL+D now works as expected to announce the current date.
• When using the ALT+NUMBER ROW keystrokes to read the contents of the various fields in a meeting request in Outlook 2013 and later, resolved an issue
where the field content was not matching the prompt.
• Resolved an issue where the command to move focus to the results field in the Windows 10 calculator (INSERT+CTRL+D) could not be found using the JAWS
Command Search feature.
list end
Take care.

Latest JAWS Update

setting up windows mail

Mark Furness

I have been trying to set up windows mail on windows 10.
No matter where I go there does not seem to be a place where input or output port numbers can be set.
I wish to set up my account for bell, here in Canada, through sympatico.ca. It is a pop3 account, internet mail.
My gmail account is working fine, but I can not add my pop3 account.
All is done in outlook perfectly, it is just windows mail that is being a pain.
tried was other account andadvance set up and even hot mail since sympatico uses hot mail in their settings.

Re: Windows live mail will not configure: please get back to me!

Ryan,

Have you tried logging in via the Google (I don't care if it's Gmail, but that's easiest) web interface with this account recently?  That's the first thing I'd do.  Then navigate to your Google Accounts page and make sure that two-step verification is turned off, as I don't think that WLM supports it.  That could very likely be your problem.

See this Google Help Page for the step-by-step instructions, with direct link to your the accounts page if you're already signed-in, for turning off two-step verification.

Windows live mail will not configure: please get back to me!

Ryan Coverdell

My gmail account will not configure in the windows live program. I got
to the log in where it's setting up folders and it gave me an error
message that login info was wrong. I know my email address and I know
my password. The actual error is below. Somehow google interprets this
as a blocked sign in attempt and sent an alert.

Regards,

Ryan
Coverdell
PS. I want to configure my email for windows live mail because
attachments are complicated to send to people in webmail. Folders are
hard to fault and the whole expand/collapse process is confusing. Does
any one using web mail find sending attachments easy and can some one
send me something on how to simplify it along with my wlm stuff/
Thanks. The error is below. It's rather odd, so I wonder if my wlm
program was damaged by malware. I don't know.
