Hello list,

I’m in search of an accessible VOIP desktop client with Jaws as it is the
screen reader I’m using.

I’m currently using Skype and a Skype telephone number. My subscription
comes due in a few weeks and before I renew for another year, I wanted to
see if there was perhaps another option out there that is equal to or more
accessible than skype. I know there’s Vonage and I guess MagicJack and
grasshopper, but I’m also looking for something that I can use to take and
receive calls on a computer with all the regular functions like call
waiting, forwarding, voicemail, etc.

I’m a big time Google Voice user, but the one drawback is that there’s no
real way to easily answer/make calls from the computer with GV/Hangouts
and Jaws. I currently have my GV business line forward to my Skype number
where I can then manage incoming/outgoing calls.

Free or Paid is fine. I’m just looking for something that is reliable and
accessible.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

As has already been said, Windows plus D is the keystroke to take you to the desktop and Windows plus M only Minimizes a series of windows that eventually reveals the desktop.

Hello Listers:

I have recently updated to Windows 10 and Jaws 17. I have noticed that for me at least, the windows+m keystroke no longer puts jaws on the "desktop" of windows 10. Is there a setting configuration I am missing that would allow this keystroke to once again be effective, or another way of putting focus on the desktop? Also, I will be upgrading from Microsoft office professional 2010 to office 2016. I plan on purchasing the version of office 16 that allows you to download it directly to one PC and use it with a local copy of office on my actual unit, rather than office 365 from the web. Does anyone know when I go to do this, if the old version of office 10 will automatically be removed when I go to upgrade, or will I have to first remove office 10 before I place office 16 on my unit? Any suggestions on the most effective way to do this? Thank you for your thoughts/suggestions in advance. -Andrew-

Hello Kenny,

In my opinion, one should go with the SMA; it is a case of pay me now or pay me more later, and with the SMA you have the advantage of being current.

I don't use VOIP, but I heard that viatalk.com or voipo.com (or .org) are good choices to try. each service has their strengths and weaknesses, i.e. features, services, cost, etc.

there's a podcast at mysticaccesspodcast.com that talks about them.

Dear List Friends,

Request your assistance in solving the following issue with JAWS 17.0.1806 & Excel 2010 on a Windows 7 computer.

When typing a formula in Excel, if I arrow to a cell to select it, JAWS stays silent & does not speak the selected cell. It used to speak the selected cell in prior versions. For example, If I want the formula, =A2 in cell A3 & after typing = in cell A3, I move with the up arrow to cell A2, JAWS will stay silent. But cell A2 does get selected & the formula, =A2 appears in cell A3. This has been verified by sighted colleagues. Previously, when I moved with the up arrow to cell A2, JAWS would say =A2.

The Excel file is maximised. This problem has started not only in new Excel files but also in old Excel files where it used to previously read during formula typing.

Thanking you all in advance for any & all assistance in solving this problem.

I've seen this issue when you start typing a formula into a cell I'm not seeing it just reading your cross cells. Other words if you type = and then try to review form and I noticed that I'm not able to read the formula.

Always when you have a problem with JAWS and Excel start by unloading/reloading JAWS. Sometimes rebooting fixes this. I have seen this often on various computers, but don't know of a relevant JAWS setting.

Are you running JAWS from the system tray or in its own window. If you are running JAWS in its own window, that is why you have to press windows+M twice. It is helpful if you run JAWS from the system tray, and then you only have to press that command once.
Take care.
