Re: Jaws & iTunes

Dave...

Hello Kane,

Yes, my primary use of iTunes is to sync audio books to my iPod. It used to
be a very simple process to check and uncheck titles from my existing
library of books -- but no more. Now, the only solution I find that works
consistently is to erase the entire book library from iTunes, and paste a
different set back into iTunes, and then to use the "sync all books" option.
That is the only way I can control which titles to keep and which to add.
Very time-consuming but the only way to have control of the process. I
suspect that a similar approach is also necessary for Podcasts, music, and
apps. I shudder to think of doing the same thing for all of them. iTunes has
truly become a wicked necessity.

I've noticed there is also lack of clarity around the Books list in
the latest version of iTunes with JAWS. I've recently started
purchasing and reading e-books using the iBooks app on my
iPhone--ordinarily not a problem, since I can download through the
iTunes app on my iPhone. But when a recent download got stuck in
transmission, the only way I could fix this was to sync that
particular phone with iTunes and then force the transfer manually onto
my phone through a copy from the iTunes 12 program on my PC. Somehow
I got it to work using arrow keys and the right-click function; but
JAWS never actually identified the right title while I was in the
Books list. So this too is a part of the same problem which will need
fixing.

Thanks for all your comments.

I was wondering about your speech verbosity level; where do you keep it? On Beginner, JAWS speaks up a storm, but I don't use beginner on anything, and only use Intermediate on Access. Most of the time I go with Advanced, and don't hear a lot of this stuff.

I called FS with my new line announcement dilemma. At first the guy said, "nothing you can do. you are stuck with it."

But then he gave it a little thought and came up with a solution using speech and sound schemes. Since the problem is present only in word, we modified the word classic scheme to silence the speak new line announcement, replacing the text with a space. It works beautifully and if I can reproduce the steps, I will be happy to share them if anyone is interested.

Hi All,

The vertical tab announcements are now gone thanks to the excellent
instructions previously posted. But now I would like to rid myself of
the "new line" announcement at the termination of every single line
that doesn't terminate with a paragraph symbol.

Before someone suggests that I turn off announcement of symbols, I am
a writer and I need to hear where certain symbols occur like the
paragraph symbol so turning everything off isn't a good option.

I tried using the same steps that worked for the vertical tab
problem, substituting a \n which is the ascii symbol for new line,
but it didn't work.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Kimber

Nope. The latest version of BlindTunes (6.3.1) and iTunes 12.3.1.2  still exhibit the very same problems reported.

I'm seriously considering stepping into the breech and installing iTunes 12.4.1 just to see what additional headaches Apple has foisted on me.

Hi,

I am having the same problems when it comes to arrowing through the artists and album lists. The songs list does not have that problem. This helps me a lot. What I do is type some letters to go to the artist I want, and then I press the downarrow once or twice, and then press the up arrow once and I always find myself on the artist I want. If you do that in every list, it really helps. Just press the down arrow once and then press the up arrow once and that usually works. If that does not work, then try pressing the down arrow twice and the up arrow once. Take care.

I also don’t see a way to navigate all 41 apps I have. I go to the tree view, select apps, then tab to where they are. Seems like I can tab through a few then get tossed to another section of iTunes. Tom, if you want to silence the character altogether, you probably want to

OK, Doc Tom, here's what I suggested, that you use JAWS dictionary, by
typing in vertical tab in the place where the dictionary says add, then tab
once to put in the word that you want pronounced, where you spell it however
you can to make JAWS pronounce it the way you want it to, and hit Spacebar
there.

On my computer, I can hit Insert-D and I'm in the Dictionary, but on older
programs, and I can also do this, to use the dictionary, you hit Insert-F2.
You would be in JAWS Manager, so you type d to get into the dictionary.
Enter. It will ask you to hit Control-Shift-D, if you want your substitute
in all programs. If you want it only in the specific program you are using
for e-mail, do not hit the Control-Shift-D. When you Entered, you should be
at Add. So Add means add whatever word you want JAWS to pronounce in another
way. You type in the add place the correct word. Then you go to the next tab
and type what you want JAWS to say. For instance in mine, I changed per se,
because JAWS makes it sound like per see. So at that second tab I typed per
say, and it has a more acceptable pronunciation.

Please excuse me, if I told you stuff you already know or more than you ever
wanted to know about JAWS Dictionary. I use it a lot.

Try:

1. Insert-F2 for JAWS Manager.
2. D for dictionary.
3. Control-Shift-D for default in all programs.
4. Write vertical tab.
5. Next tab hit a Spacebar.
6. Alt-F4, save changes and exit.

I don't know if that will work since this vertical tab statement from JAWS
might be from program or graphics as opposed to text, but it wouldn't hurt
to see if that gave you any relief.

Hello, everyone.

As you may recall, I'm working to get Office 365 up and running on a fairly
new Windows 7 laptop. I am using the latest build of Jaws 17.

I have noticed that in many Outlook 2016 e-mails, and especially in
Microsoft Word documents, Jaws keeps saying "vertical tab", as I navigate
whatever it is I'm reading.

I don't recall encountering this behavior in the previous versions of
Outlook and Word that I have used.

How can I get Jaws to stop reading the vertical tabs, whatever they are?

As I'm sure yu can imagine, this vertical tab designation is very
distracting.

Try:

1. Insert-F2 for JAWS Manager.
2. D for dictionary.
3. Control-Shift-D for default in all programs.
4. Write vertical tab.
5. Next tab hit a Spacebar.
6. Alt-F4, save changes and exit.

I don't know if that will work since this vertical tab statement from JAWS might be from program or graphics as opposed to text, but it wouldn't hurt to see if that gave you any relief.
Bye for now,

Carolyn

Hello, everyone.

As you may recall, I'm working to get Office 365 up and running on a fairly new Windows 7 laptop. I am using the latest build of Jaws 17.

I have noticed that in many Outlook 2016 e-mails, and especially in Microsoft Word documents, Jaws keeps saying "vertical tab", as I navigate whatever it is I'm reading.

I don't recall encountering this behavior in the previous versions of Outlook and Word that I have used.

How can I get Jaws to stop reading the vertical tabs, whatever they are?

As I'm sure yu can imagine, this vertical tab designation is very distracting.

I saw the further clarifications after writing my last note, so apologies are due.  However, the phrase still seems unusual.  Like Brian, I haven’t used it that often, and it’s definitely been a while. Fooling around with it just now, it says “Column Break” in an e-mail, and says nothing in Word.  Of course, I’m using 2010 here at the office, and that may be the difference.´

Announcing page breaks is not that unusual, but the phrase “vertical tab” must be new.  Tom, does it happen when your cursoring, or when you’re in say-all?

Yes, I have, Brian;  and have punctuation set to “some”, as I always have done in the past.

Tom,

         Have you checked punctuation settings?

I imagine this gets announced when many others don't because it represents an intentional page break where one would not otherwise occur and its a way to let the listener know that you've jumped to the next page "early."

Re: Jaws & iTunes

Alan,

Yes that behavior of iTunes came with version 12. And it really p***es me off. It also affects how to select audio books. Same problem -- you get kicked off the list after several selections and have to tab back, and then slog your way through the first batch to get back to where you were.

Hello,

I am currently running Win 10, latest Jaws, and iTunes version 12.4.1

It has been a while since I played with apps etc. in iTunes That section used to be in a list format where one had the option to install, remove, or deleted the app. I do not see any way to delete an app from there now. I also don’t see a way to navigate all 41 apps I have. I go to the tree view, select apps, then tab to where they are. Seems like I can tab through a few then get tossed to another section of iTunes. When I look at my phone under iTunes, media, I see a mobile apps folder but all  my current apps are not listed. I know beginning in IOS 9, app thinning was introduced so transferring purchases in the iTunes program on my PC with iPhone plugged in synced almost instantly. Don’t think it is copying things over like before IOS 9.

So, how does one know what apps are backed up and how can one get rid of apps in history they no longer want, even if not installed on iPhone anymore.

Best,

Al

I also find it difficult to select tones to synk with my iPhone.  I don’t even see an option to delete duplicate.  It’s becoming more and more frustrating.

Hello Dale and Chris,

My window is maximised; Alt plus numbers on the numbers row works, and pressing alt, and shift tab on home gets me there, so it is functional, but now, just curious.

Thank you,

Kevin.

Hello All,

I am using Windows 10, Jaws 17, and Excel 2016.

Pressing Alt to go to home in the ribbon, and up arrowing to the quick access tool bar, has stopped working. All I get when I press the up arrow, is the Windows gong, denoting I am going nowhere. I checked the FS webinar on the quick access tool bar, and that is the only process for accessing it they offered that I could find.

Any suggestions, please?

Thank you in advance.

Cheers Kevin.

Can you find it with the JAWS cursor? if not, it may be hidden. Also, after pressing alt, try shift-tab.

Good luck.!
