Hello Lee,

Where in the braille section of Settings Center can one find the cell line length so that JAWS can be informed that the last cell would be 39? I was curious and searched there but did not find this setting.

Re: questions about Focus 40 Blue, JFW, and replacing USB cord
Lee Maschmeyer
Hi Brent,
Taking your questions in more-or-less reverse order, you should be able to use any USB cable that fits, but the best thing to do is take the cable you have to the store so they can see exactly what you need. For the panning, are you using Structured Mode? It's sometimes picky about letting you pan beyond the current line. Try switching to Line Mode and see if that helps or hurts. In Settings Center in the Braille section you can tell Jaws which is the first cell of the line and which is the last, so you can tell it the last cell is 39. But if I were you I'd talk to FS about getting a loaner while you get your unit repaired. The worst they can do is say No. The last I heard their hours of operation were quite long, specifically to deal with time zones; so I suspect you have a lot more time at your disposal than you think. questions about Focus 40 Blue, JFW, and replacing USB cord
Brent Harding
I have been using my Focus 40 Blue a lot more now
that I have started work recently. Before then, I would use it occasionally, and
I used it for my previous job for proofreading and reading various things. At my
current job, I have JFW 17, and lately, I discovered that dots 4, 5, and 6 on
the last cell just don't come up so that Y's feel like K's, and so forth. Is
there a way in JFW to tell it that it now only has 39 cells? Also, when I am in
read-only edit boxes in our system at work where disclosures sometimes appear, I
can't pan all the way through with the panning button like I can for the ones
that appear in Internet Explorer. The left rocker switch thing will get it down
to the next line, but knowing when I need a line down versus pan makes me have
to sound like I'm stumbling, and customers hang up, silently as I might add,
leaving me talking to myself unknowingly as my after call time ticks by. Is
there an easy way in JFW to make it ding when the next pan will result in
nothing so I know it's at the end of the print line, or JFW line, or whatever it
goes by when the new line command is called for? Finally, the end of the USB
cord that goes into the braille display is beginning to get a little bit of
exposed wire, and I want to get a new one so I don't get caught out when the
connection is broken enough to be unusable. Is it OK to just use a regular Micro
to normal USB cable despite the manual's dire warnings about FCC compliance?
FS's hours being Eastern instead of Central time means I would maybe have half
an hour, tops, to deal with them before I have to leave in the morning, and they
are closed within half an hour of when I officially get done, but completing the
last call of the day largely eliminates that time.

Tony, Did you wear the plastic split during the day? Is your split for the upper teeth only? I have a split too and I wear it during my sleep only. I am a heavy grinder, and I was told that the split only protects the teeth, but doesn't really reduce the amount of grinding. I tried to wear the split while using JAWS, but it didn't seem to reduce my ear pain. I was also referred to a neuromuscular dentist, who told me he can make a really fancy split that would cover both upper and lower teeth and prevent grinding completely, but that would cost me around 10000 dollars, so I haven't made up my mind yet. Carolyn, Good idea. I called Freedom Scientific, but unfortunately they didn't have any suggestions. I'm sorry to hear about your tinnitus, it musdt be so frustrating to live with it... Gudrun, I tried having more breaks during the day. I even tried splitting my JAWS usage into 4 1-hour intervals with breaks in between, but that doesn't seem to help. It seems like my ears are sensitive to the total amount of time I listen to JAWS, and not the timing of the breaks in between. Tony

JAWS AND EAR PAIN
Sandra Streeter
Hi, Tony,
Have you tried earplugs? I like the ones that are spongy but not too soft,
shaped like tiny cylinders (not like a cone); you squeeze one end down (I
usually combine a rolling and squeezing motion) small enough to fit in your ear.
What I like about them is that they only filter some sound--so, speech and other
needed sounds are still available. I attended a Moody Blues concert a year and a
half ago, and my mother, who had been used to hearing their mellower tunes when
I played them through my bedroom door as a teen, asked why I was putting in
earplugs, and I told her that they do have some very loud songs--especially the
later ones; I gave her a fresh pair, and she was delighted with them; we got all
the necessary sound without ultra-amplification from the speakers and such. The
ones I got came from Amazon--I bought a lifetime supply, and carry one in every
conceivable bag I take anywhere, to ward against the unplanned fire alarm, loud
music, etc. I have both slight age-related hearing loss, and Asperger's-related
sensitivity to certain levels of sound or pitches, so they are perfect, when I
need them.

Google sheets with Jaws 17
Lauren Snyder
Hi,
I am using Jaws 17, Windows 10 and I received a file that opened up in google sheets. Is there a way I can copy all the text and paste it into a Word or Notepad file or excel?
Please advise. Jaws can read it, but I can’t go from letter to letter.

Lauren

The Open menu under VLC should also do it. You get there by either right clicking or using the Alt Key. It gives you several options, one of which is disk. Look at that menu, choose your options, if any, then Enter on the Disk button; it should take off. You might also want to try the trick I mentioned yesterday, disabling disk menus, and going with the much simpler menu structure built into the program. You might also take it out of default, and allow Windows to ask what you want to do with the disk. That usually does it too.

Hi Mike
You get VLC to play the DVD from the open with menu option in my computer/this PC once the DVD drive is selected. Now here is what I wrote to the list regarding getting DVD’s to play. What you do is go to the menu bar and find playback. Activate that, then arrow down until you find the title sub menu open that and click on the title that you want to play. Also, don’t forget to google “VLC Media Player for windows keyboard shortcuts”
