Hi Adrian,

I believe, Control + Enter, creates a page break.  Control + N, opens a new document, at least that's the way it works in Word 2010.
Take care.

Hello, everyone.

As some of you may remember, I have been reluctant to move from IE 10 to IE 11, because of problems I had last summer with IE 11 in terms of being able to enter text into text boxes on web sites that I access.

However, since I now have been forced to upgrade to IE 11 due to no Microsoft support for IE 10, I decided to take the leap today, and install IE 11.

I installed IE 11 from the .exe file that I downloaded and saved from the Microsoft web site, and the installation seemed to go well.

I also was pleasantly surprised to find that my internet favorites had all been preserved, even though I had saved my favorites folder as a back-up, in case something went wrong.

However, this is where the good news ends.

I’m now back to having the same text-entry problems I had last summer.  I had my sighted wife watch while I ttried entering text into edit boxes, and she tells me that my main  cursor does not move when I try to do so.  As I enter text, Jaws speaks the text, but it is not entered into the web form.  I have Jaws set to manually enter forms mode, so I know I’m in forms mode, since I get the higher-sounding click whenever I hit enter.

I have made sure all add-ons, extensions, and toolbars  are disabled, but so far, no joy!

Last summer when I had this issue, I worked with Freedom Scientific  Technical Support, with the Microsoft Accessibility hotline staff, and with another well-experienced Jaws user from this list, and we could never solve the issue.

At least I have Firefox now as my main internet browser, and that works fine!

If anyone has any other suggestions of things for me to try, please send them my way.

I am extremely frustrated with Internet Explorer at this point!

Re: JAWS 17 and Copying Web text

Actually, I’m more surprised that for me, at least, the copy setting I elect stays constant until I change it. The change is made in JAWS quick settings, where many settings are one-time. That said, this may be one more reason to use the MS Word special paste feature, control-alt-v. It involves only one more key press than a simple control-v paste command.

Another option to try is:

1. While in IE, you didn't say which browser so I'm assuming IE, press, Insert / Jaws Key, to open Quick Settings Internet Explorer.

2. Arrow down to, Virtual Cursor Options, & under this heading is Select & Copy, & here you have 2 choices which you press the spacebar to toggle between them.

3. If you choose the, From Virtual Cursor option, this copies the text with formatting.  If you choose the, Full Content Using Onscreen Highlight option, this will copy the text without formatting.

I’m guessing this retroactive defect is a function of files being shared among versions. Although I don’t experience any of the problems described here, I’ve noticed in the past that installation of a new version of JAWS will cause old versions to lose some good points that the new version broke.

Does FS even support having multiple versions of JAWS on the same machine?   I know that one can do this, at least "in theory," if one assigns different installation directories/folders but I wonder if issues such as the one described here with JAWS 15 forms mode once JAWS 17 is installed could be traced to a DLL that's in a location that's shared by both installations that has been updated such that whatever version 15 expected to be there isn't anymore.

I know one of the reasons a raft of Microsoft C++ DLLs get kept on Windows machines is that various versions of various software depend on a specific version of one of those DLLs and won't necessarily continue to function if it were to be removed.

Hi Darran,

Another option to try is:

1. While in IE, you didn't say which browser so I'm assuming IE, press, Insert / Jaws Key, to open Quick Settings Internet Explorer.

2. Arrow down to, Virtual Cursor Options, & under this heading is Select & Copy, & here you have 2 choices which you press the spacebar to toggle between them.

3. If you choose the, From Virtual Cursor option, this copies the text with formatting.  If you choose the, Full Content Using Onscreen Highlight option, this will copy the text without formatting.

Take care.

Try shift-control-v, then arrow down through the options.

Subject: JAWS 17 and Copying Web text

Hi List.

I'm having a brain freeze here, and I can't remember for the life of me which setting I need to alter to allow me to copy and paste text from a webpage into a word document?

At the moment what I'm copying is not what's being pasted!

I've been into the Settings Centre, but I can't find the relevant check box, or even recall what it is I should be looking for. My stumbling about in there is getting me nowhere in a hurry!

Any and all help gratefully received.

Thanks.

Darran

Hi, Marsha,
Please could you indicate the JAWS version
Where you are having problems with edit fields using I E 11?
What happens with those editfields in I E 11?
This will really help as it is now several users of I E 11 having the
problem.

Hi,

Wow.

Thank you for this warning.

Is any one else unable to use forms mode in earlier JAWS versions after

Install of JAWS 17?

That is not supposed to happen.

If this is a sampling of issues,

Then

F S  needs to hear about this.

I haven't been able to invoke forms mode in jaws 15 ever since installing jaws 17. I know that the functionality of forms mode is a bit different in jaws 17 and figured something got corrupted. I'm running Windows 7 and I.E.11 and have this same on both my work and personal laptops. It's not a solution, but sort of nice to know it isn't just me.

I really do appreciate it when a JAWS user spends hours of time working with F S as Tom did  to  get a problem solved.

Re: Rumola; Does anyone know whether the problem with Webvisum not working with the latest version of Firefox has been fixed?

Okay, here's the steps for getting Rumola to work with IE:

1. Access the Rumola web site (http://skipinput.com/), and press "H" repeatedly until you land on the heading labeled "Bookmarklet". Then tab to the link labeled "...Rumola" and press Enter.
2. Launch the Context menu and scroll all the way down to the Add to Favorites dialog. Tab to the combo box and scroll down the list once to choose Favorites bar and then tab to the Add button and activate it.
3. Once Rumola is in the Favorites bar, activate it for the first time and you should be presented with a web page for purchasing credits which are 99 cents for 50 captcha credits, which are good for a year. You can pay with PayPal or a major credit/credit card. Once your account has been activated, you will receive an email with your user-ID (usually your email address) and password. Be sure to save this email so that you have a record of your password for future reference should you need it, although you will be logged in initially.
4. Now Rumola is ready to use. Using IE, whenever you encounter a web page that contains an image captcha, press Control-I to launch the favorites list, scroll to the favorites bar by pressing "F" repeatedly, and hit Enter when you land on Rumola. The captcha will be solved almost instantly and placed in the correct edit field, and one credit will be deducted from your account. Keep checking this edit field to be sure that the result is there; there is no audible feedback to alert you that the captcha has been solve.
5. If you want to test Rumola, visit the following sample image captcha page and activate Rumola from the IE favorites bar. The result will be placed in the field labeled "2+3=". Note that if you refresh this page, a new image captcha will be presented. This is only a test page, not a real account creation page:

http://www.captchacreator.com/v-examples.html

That's it. Good luck!

Gerald

Gerald,

Great sales pitch that got me to install Rumola as a Firefox extension. However, could you give the steps for how to get Rumola to IE favorites?

Yes, absolutely. Rumola works perfectly with IE. You simply place the
Rumola app in the IE favorites bar, and whenever you encounter a web page
that contains an image captcha, you launch it from the favorites bar, and it
will place the captcha result in the correct edit field automatically.
Trust me. I know it works with IE because I have tested it extensively.
Last week, for instance, I unexpectedly encountered a captcha on the log-in
page for the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. I simply
pressed Control-I to launch the IE favorites list, scrolled to the favorites
bar, launched Rumola, and almost instantaneously, the captcha result was
placed in the correct edit field. That's all there is to it.

Are you sure that Rumola works with Internet Explorer?
From the information I found, it works with Firefox, Chrome, and Safari, but
says nothing about Internet Explorer.

 Marianne,

Can't this also be achieved by opening a Google Doc using the actual Google Doc editor by accessing the file from the local Google Drive Sync folder?

I've never tried to do collaboration as you describe it, but I do have clients who far prefer to access files stored on their Google Drive, or shared via their Google Drive, using the "local" Google Sync Drive folder.  It's much easier to get to files that way than through the Google Drive web interface.

I use the web interface pretty much exclusively, but I can understand why someone who was blind or visually-impaired would have a strong preference for using the Google Sync Drive that they can set up on their computer, and that appears for all the world like any other folder, rather than the web interface unless they needed to use it to add an item shared with them but that they do not own.

Re: Adding Favorites In Firefox

The difference is that if you know how to do it, you can make a shortcut to your favorites folder, and without having to open your browser first, you can click on a favorite and go directly there.

This is true.  Microsoft simply implemented its "Favorites" as a folder of webpage shortcuts.  If one really prefers to launch directly into a given webpage for a different default browser you can simply create that same shortcut style in favorites "by hand."

Chrome allows you to create what it calls an "application shortcut" to take you directly to a webpage when you click on it via the "hamburger stack button"/Menu button, More Tools, Create application shortcuts.  This will place the result on your desktop, if you prefer it be in the Favorites folder you can cut and paste it there.

There is a Firefox extension called deskCut that does the same thing, but does not work under Windows 10 and Firefox 43.0.4, and I'm not certain which is the problem since there is a very recent review saying that it does work even though the extension is quite old.  There is another, SaveLink, that is slightly more complicated in that it can save the web page shortcut to any folder you define as a place you'd like to save them.  If if the Favorites folder is where you'd prefer they go then you can add add that to the list of folders where SaveLink can save web page shortcuts and always direct SaveLink to place it there.

I have not tested either of these Firefox add-ons for how well they may, or may not, interact with JAWS.  Since the Chrome method is built in to Chrome if you can get to the Chrome menu you can get to it.
