One thing about the apostrophe, if you nullify  it altogether, you may get some strange results on contractions.  I tried that once, and had to back off.

Hi LeDon,

Note: The apostrophy  & dollar sign are only examples.

You can change how Jaws speaks the apostrophy in the Settings Centter
default all applications by doing the following.  If you only want to change
the punctuation settings in a particular application just open the Settings
Center while in the particular application by pressing Insert + 6, on the
number row above the main keyboard to open the Settings Center:
1. Press Insert + 6, on the number row above the main keyboard to open the
Settings Center, & press, Control, shift, + D, to open default all
applications.
2. Arrow down to, Punctuation closed & press right arrow to open.
3. Arrow down to customize punctuation & press the spacebar to open.  Don't
press enter here, if you press enter instad of the spacebar, the Settings
Center will close.
4.A. When making changes in the customize punctuation list, if you do not
want
Jaws to speak/recognize a particular punctuation mark you want to choose the
" all " selection.  You will have 4 radio buttons to arrow up or down
through.  They are none, some, most, & all.  In these selections they work
backwards than what you would think.  For example;  If you choose " none "
for the dollar sign, Jaws will speak / recognize every dollar sign in
whatever you are reading.  On the other hand, if you choose the " all "
radio button, Jaws will not speak / recognize any dollar signs.

4.B. After you pressed the spacebar on customize punctuation, you are now in
a list of punctuation marks.  Arrow down the list and when
you have the punctuation mark you want to change highlighted, tab 1 time to
the radio buttons that I mentioned earlier.
5. Keeping in mind what I mentioned earlier about these choices working
backwards, select the box in this list, in your case not wanting any
apostrophy's spoken, choose the all button.
6. Now, if you want to make a change to another punctuation mark, shift tab
back to the list and highlight a different punctuation mark, tab back to the
radio buttons and select the box you prefer.
7. After you are done making your changes tab to okay and press the
spacebar.
8. Tab to apply, press the spacebar, tab to okay, press the spacebar to save
your changes & close the Settings Center.

Now, I hope that you are not as confused as I am after typing all of this.

1. If you are running Jaws from the system tray press, Insert + J, to open
the Jaws context menu.
2. Press the letter, H, to open, Help, or arrow down to Help & press enter
to open.
3. Press the letter, Z, to open the Startup Wizard...., or arrow down to,
Startup Wizard....& press enter.
4. Go through the Startup Wizard making your choices & following the
prompts.

Answer #2:
If you want your punctuation set for, None, in all applications try the
following:
1. Open the Settings Center in either of these 2 ways.
A. Press, Insert / Jaws Key + 6, on the number row above the main keyboard.
B. Press, Insert / Jaws Key + F2, to open the, Jaws Manager, arrow down, to
Settings Center, & press enter.
With the Settings Center open press, control, shift , + D, to open the
Settings Center Default All Applications.
2. Arrow down to, Punctuation, right arrow to open.
3. Arrow down to, Punctuation Level, press the spacebar until you hear Jaws
report, None.
4. Tab to the, Apply button, press the spacebar, tab to the, Okay button, &
press enter to save & close.

And the bonus answer #3 is:
While in any application press, Insert _+ V, to open Jaws quick settings,
arrow down to Punctuation, press the spacebar until you hear the level of
punctuation you want, tab to the Okay button & press enter to save / close
quick settings.

I use a Gmail account, Google Docs, and Google Drive and use Google Chrome browser. How do I get started using Google Voice. Are there any customizations to make to Google Voice using JAWS 17, using win10. If there was a dialog asking me to answer the call, JAWS was not announcing it. I tried using Firefox and Internet Explorer 11, but I couldn't find any indication that a call was coming in.

You didn't mention if you were trying to use JAWS with Google Hangouts, or just the old-fashioned Google Voice. I have never tried HangOuts with JAWS because I don't want to use GV in this way.

As others have said, I too just have the calls routed to another number and set a ring schedule if I don't want the calls coming at certain times of the day.

For what it's worth, Google Voice with JAWS works pretty well, but some functions work better with Internet Explorer and others work better with Firefox. For instance, when selecting a new number, JAWS absolutely will not give you the continue button once you've checked a number. I have to use the JAWS cursor to even find the word Continue, and that only works in Internet Explorer.

Now I really want to get this to work, but like I said, I'm not even getting the dialog you're describing with the two buttons. I must be doing something wrong, but I can't figure out what it is.

Do you have the Gmail window in standard view open? Google Voice will only ring in this window. Another reason why I do the call forwarding thing  instead of receiving calls vai the PC.

I believe that you can use ctrl+f to forward an e-mail from the list of messages, as long as the message, to which you wish to reply, is highlighted/selected. At least, with OUTLOOK 2007 and 2013, this works fine. Jim H

You can use the mobile site for Facebook on your computer. Here is the URL:
m.Facebook.com
When you type that URL, a easy and accessible page will come up. Type your
friend's name in the search at the top of the page. Then, arrow down to
search results and enter on his name. You will be then taken to his page.
Just arrow down the page to where it says to message this person and press
enter. The message page will open and you can just press e for edit and type
the message and press enter on send. The Mobile site of Facebook is so easy
to use, because it is so basic and no advertising or any of that. Let me

The facebook layout in my Pac Mate Omni is easwy to follow, with simple
basic links. my Pac mate is out for repair now though. From my desktop pc
which I am on now I would like to message my brother on Facebook, but when I
go to his name on my desktop pc web interface I can't find the message link
or a history of stuff I've written him before my Pac mate was sent back. If
you have overcome this issue please let me know what you do. I want to
contact him individually in a chat, not as part of a group. How do I do this
from a desktop pc? Is there a way to access a basic html version of
facebook? And while I'm at it what about a basic html version of Hotmail? I
can't use the current web interface because it relies on screen taps. I'm
using windows 7 and jaws 14.

I used to do this back in the day, but it’s been a long time since I’ve tried as I simply have calls forwarded to my cell or Skype number as I found that way to be more efficient instead of always having to have a specific Gmail window open only for  incoming calls.

I recall it involved turning the virtual cursor off and tabbing like crazy or using the jaws cursor to click on the  answer button. Hanging  up was a simple press of the escape key.

Ingeneral though, I found IE to be an easier screen reader experience than Firefox. Mainly due to the fact that with Firefox, Jaws kept on announcing the call timer which made trying to do anything else pointless.

She’ll probably be better off just forwarding incomving GV calls to another line. She can  set the incoming caller ID to the GV number if she wants to know when an incoming call is to her actual number or the GV number.

I’m a big time GV user and find the service to be very useful.

         One of my clients is beginning an internship and she wanted a phone number that her clients could call that was neither her home number or cell phone number.  I suggested that we set up a Google Voice number for her since she has a Google account.  Since I've done this before getting the Google Voice phone number set up as well as having her record her personal greeting, etc., went perfectly well.  I have her set up to receive e-mail regarding missed calls as well as transcriptions of her voicemail messages.  The latter messages also contain a direct link that one can click to listen to that specific voicemail message.

 

          The issue is actually answering an incoming call from Google Voice with JAWS (I should add right now we're using JAWS 14).  When a call comes in a pop-up is presented at the lower left corner of the screen that has what appear to be two buttons, Answer and Decline.  Those buttons, though, aren't really buttons if you listen to JAWS, but appear to be links.  In any case, when the pop-up pops up JAWS clearly recognizes its presence because it announces, "Incoming call," which is the text shown near the buttons/links in the pop-up.  However, I have been completely unable to determine a way to access those buttons/links while the call is ringing to allow her to actually choose to answer it or decline it.

 

           Freedom Scientific Technical Support suggested I post here, as they have no answer to this question and said they have no experience with using any version of JAWS with Google Voice.

Google Drive/Docs

Hi all,

 

     I was wondering if someone could help me with Google drive/Docs? I have listened to the FS podcasts on the subject and have a student which I need to teach these to. He reads a lot of documents using these for school. I have a hard time getting some of the commands to work and don’t know if it’s something I’m doing incorrectly, if it’s Google Drive/Docs, or a combination of both. I’ve called FS for help and I seemed to know more about Google drive/Docs than the representative I spoke to, did.

updates need to be set to download but let me install them that way
when they are downloaded you should have a new updates in the task
tray that you can click on and then you tab over to important updates
and you press enter on that to bring up the list of downloaded
updates. down arrow through the list till you find the kb:3035583
update and right mouse click on it. you should then down arrow down
to hide update and you also uncheck the update with the spacebar
before you right click on it. you can then tab to the ok button and
press enter on the install button if there's other updates to install.

he can go to the run command and type in:

wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:3035583

re-boot the system.
this will uninstall the update and then when the update comes back he
will need to hide the update and not install it.

The only fully accessible player I know of is from IRTI, and costs $29.95
via download; $59.95 if you want them to ship you the install CD. It works
on whatever DVD player you have attached to your computer or built-in. You
can activate a movie's audio description track without sighted assistance.

Although you can use the software player just fine with JAWS running, it has
its own voice, and works best in that mode, so when you bring up the
program, it is best to put JAWS to sleep by either exiting JAWS, or better
yet, putting JAWS to sleep with the insert key space bar, then s.

Here is the link to all the info. You will for sure want the instruction
manual, which IRTI can give you, also by download or email attachment.

I am using it with Windows 7. As mentioned above, any JAWS version is fine,
since you can use the player's built-in speech.
