I just found it in advanced settings.

Wonder if it helps or hinders Jaws and other screen readers.

Hello.

I'm very upset for fs removing the murg utility option in jaws 17.
They have the excuse that older version settings can know longer being
important in 17. I don't know if I must laugh. If they new that it
would happen, why did they not make a priority to implement a
replacement tool wich could be in 17?
Now you have to manually change everything? Is it possible perhaps to
use the settings packager to acomplish that?
I find it so tragic that they spend the hole year on smart navigation,
wich is not even such a remarkable feature, really this was going to
be more bennifishil to more people and now that its not ready it will
affect everyone negatively.

Mike,

You know the symbols list that you bring up with JAWS key+4 (on the number
row above the letters)? I can select a symbol from that list and press enter
to paste it into a document. However, JAWS is not verbalizing those symbols
once they're pasted.

Again, the problem may be specific to my combination of JAWS and the
synthesizer Dectalk Express.

What do you mean by your standard symbols aren't being spoken? Is it
possible that your punctuation level setting has been changed? Try setting

the punctuation level to, Some, to see if this helps. Or, am I way off
track?

Technical whizzes? We're not talking programming, or scripting, or

very difficult! For instance, I don't use typing echo, except in
spreadsheets, where errors can be hard to find and fix. Accordingly, I

Because of the number and type of changes a merge was not possible. We

When Freedom scientific first began way back when their mission
statement
was to provide a program to the blind and visually impaired world that
would
allow them to work the computer using keystrokes rather than a mouse.
We've
come a long way since then but it seems that part of the mission
statement
has been lost in the mire. Business has to keep progressing but losing
sight of your mission eventually reduces all the economic progress.
There
are other screen readers. I hope FS doesn't wake up one day to hear

their popularity and standing in the blind community has been replaced

Understood. The temptation to roll over and stick my four legs up in the

is sometimes strong, but over time I've found that persistence and
volume
can prevail. By persistence, I mean one person demanding a fix. By
volume,

mean the more of us who complain, the more pressure FS will be under to

it and ensure this kind of fiasco doesn't recur.

I do recall many versions ago that the merge utility cause havoc from
one
version to the next. The people at FS remember that event. I also know
that
persistence doesn't always work. I've had my own frustrations with FS
over
time.

But the merge utility was basic to the transition from version to
version,
and most of us JAWS users depended on it. It's bad enough that we must
pay
for a SMA every two versions, which FS has ensured means every two
years,
but now to go through such inconvenience as well?

As for the lister who proposed a petition, let him produce one.
Otherwise,
it's simple enough to write to FS and let our voices be heard. Again,

I agree with you &, I don't find it acceptable either but, what else are

supposed to do? We can bitch until the cows come home & it won't change

fact, that Freedom Scientific already knows, they are not keeping up

their own products. I've complained about various screw-ups for many
years,
& when you send them a complaint you only get back an automated kiss ass
email stating how they're working to resolve the problem. It seems to

that they have a need to stay on some kind of schedule, & that schedule

to put out a new version of Jaws around November of each year whether

from version to version is important. FS should have anticipated this
concern and figured out a solution before it became our problem. As I
believe it was Aidan who pointed out, it isn't as if the new features in

Merge Utility No Longer Available

Major changes have been made to improve the JAWS localization process.

included reorganizing many of the JAWS settings files. Due to these
changes,
the Merge utility is no longer installed with JAWS 17 as settings from
prior
versions cannot be merged. We are planning a solution for the future
which
will replace this utility and provide an even greater benefit for our
customers.

I'm looking to upgrade to Jaws 17, possibly during the college teaching
semester break, but that won't be for about 8 weeks for me at this

Thanks, Soronel, and I'll make a note of this. However, I haven't changed
that file. I just can't get JAWS 17 to verbalize the existing standard
symbols. I vaguely recall making some adjustment somewhere to correct the
problem, but can't remember where. I assume the problem lies in my using a
wonderful but senile Dectalk Express as my synthesizer.

Technical whizzes? We're not talking programming, or scripting, or

When Freedom scientific first began way back when their mission statement
was to provide a program to the blind and visually impaired world that
would
allow them to work the computer using keystrokes rather than a mouse.
We've
come a long way since then but it seems that part of the mission
statement
has been lost in the mire. Business has to keep progressing but losing
sight of your mission eventually reduces all the economic progress.

Understood. The temptation to roll over and stick my four legs up in the

is sometimes strong, but over time I've found that persistence and volume
can prevail. By persistence, I mean one person demanding a fix. By
volume,

mean the more of us who complain, the more pressure FS will be under to

it and ensure this kind of fiasco doesn't recur.

I do recall many versions ago that the merge utility cause havoc from one
version to the next. The people at FS remember that event. I also know
that
persistence doesn't always work. I've had my own frustrations with FS

time.

But the merge utility was basic to the transition from version to
version,
and most of us JAWS users depended on it. It's bad enough that we must
pay
for a SMA every two versions, which FS has ensured means every two years,
but now to go through such inconvenience as well?

As for the lister who proposed a petition, let him produce one.
Otherwise,
it's simple enough to write to FS and let our voices be heard. Again, the

Technical whizzes? We're not talking programming, or scripting, or
anything
very difficult! For instance, I don't use typing echo, except in
spreadsheets, where errors can be hard to find and fix. Accordingly, I
just
tweak Excel to speak characters, while allowing other programs to run
with
Typing Echo off. Maybe I run more out of the box than many folks here
do,
but that really isn't rocket science, requiring only a few seconds to
set
and save. I like the merge feature, but, as I said earlier, I
deliberately
did not merge 15's settings to 16, in order to avoid some minor file
corruption that occurred in 15--no big deal.

Having said that, I don't know when I'll switch to 17, simply because 16
is
one of the coolest versions I've ever run, and I am reluctant to give
it
up.

If you recall we had the same situation going from jaws 12 to jaws 13.
Because of the number and type of changes a merge was not possible. We

seeing the same situation again. I am sure FS will have a merge moving

17 to 18.

When Freedom scientific first began way back when their mission
statement
was to provide a program to the blind and visually impaired world that
would
allow them to work the computer using keystrokes rather than a mouse.
We've
come a long way since then but it seems that part of the mission
statement
has been lost in the mire. Business has to keep progressing but losing
sight of your mission eventually reduces all the economic progress.
There
are other screen readers. I hope FS doesn't wake up one day to hear
that
their popularity and standing in the blind community has been replaced
by
another company.

Understood. The temptation to roll over and stick my four legs up in the

is sometimes strong, but over time I've found that persistence and
volume
can prevail. By persistence, I mean one person demanding a fix. By
volume,

mean the more of us who complain, the more pressure FS will be under to

it and ensure this kind of fiasco doesn't recur.

I do recall many versions ago that the merge utility cause havoc from
one
version to the next. The people at FS remember that event. I also know
that
persistence doesn't always work. I've had my own frustrations with FS

time.

But the merge utility was basic to the transition from version to
version,
and most of us JAWS users depended on it. It's bad enough that we must
pay
for a SMA every two versions, which FS has ensured means every two
years,
but now to go through such inconvenience as well?

that file. I just can't get JAWS 17 to verbalize the existing standard
symbols. I vaguely recall making some adjustment somewhere to correct the
problem, but can't remember where. I assume the problem lies in my using a
wonderful but senile Dectalk Express as my synthesizer.

Believe me, I would like to rollover & stick at least 1 of my 4 legs up 1

someone's ass at Freedom Scientific but, it seems like, most of the time
anyways, they don't give a rats ass about what we the consumer think & go
on
their merry way! I do agree that if people complained in more volume it
might make more of an impact but, if these complaints fall upon deaf
ears,
so to speak, complaining won't change anything either, just as it hasn't
changed crap like this in, forever, with FS. I can tell you 1 way of
making
1 of the most important people within Fs, Eric Damry, aware of how you
feel,
& that is to join another email list, Jaws-Users. Eric Damry is a member
of
this list & is a somewhat frequent poster depending on the topic, to the
list. Here is the necessary link to join if interested.

To join:

Click on the link above, put subscribe in the subject line, leave the
message body empty, & send. You'll receive a confirmation email, reply
to
it & you should be good to go.

It's not a real high traffic list.

Understood. The temptation to roll over and stick my four legs up in the

is sometimes strong, but over time I've found that persistence and volume
can prevail. By persistence, I mean one person demanding a fix. By
volume,

mean the more of us who complain, the more pressure FS will be under to
fix
it and ensure this kind of fiasco doesn't recur.

I do recall many versions ago that the merge utility cause havoc from one
version to the next. The people at FS remember that event. I also know
that
persistence doesn't always work. I've had my own frustrations with FS
over
time.

But the merge utility was basic to the transition from version to
version,
and most of us JAWS users depended on it. It's bad enough that we must
pay
for a SMA every two versions, which FS has ensured means every two years,
but now to go through such inconvenience as well?

As for the lister who proposed a petition, let him produce one.
Otherwise,
it's simple enough to write to FS and let our voices be heard. Again, the

I admit I don't like being a rabble-rouser, but this really is annoying.

I agree with you &, I don't find it acceptable either but, what else are
we
supposed to do? We can bitch until the cows come home & it won't change
the
fact, that Freedom Scientific already knows, they are not keeping up with
their own products. I've complained about various screw-ups for many
years,
& when you send them a complaint you only get back an automated kiss ass
email stating how they're working to resolve the problem. It seems to me
that they have a need to stay on some kind of schedule, & that schedule
is
to put out a new version of Jaws around November of each year whether
it's
ready for consumer consumption or not!

Sorry, Mike, but I don't find this statement acceptable. Ease of
transition
from version to version is important. FS should have anticipated this
concern and figured out a solution before it became our problem. As I
believe it was Aidan who pointed out, it isn't as if the new features in
JAWS 17 are exactly compelling. There are potential problems involved in
skipping a version, so I still plan to install JAWS 17 one of these days.

Merge Utility & why it's missing in Jaws 17, for now anyways. This comes
from What's new in Jaws 17.

Merge Utility No Longer Available

Major changes have been made to improve the JAWS localization process.
This
included reorganizing many of the JAWS settings files. Due to these
changes,
the Merge utility is no longer installed with JAWS 17 as settings from
prior
versions cannot be merged. We are planning a solution for the future
which
will replace this utility and provide an even greater benefit for our
customers.

Sometimes, I just scratch my head at these kinds of decisions.

I certainly will sign any such petition, if it is created.

I'm looking to upgrade to Jaws 17, possibly during the college teaching
semester break, but that won't be for about 8 weeks for me at this point,
and I sure would like to have the use of the merge utilities feature
again.
I know there have been issues with it at times, but the convenience and
ease
of using it far outweighs any problems, in my opinion.

fixed. I hope others will do the same so they realize how important this
is.
Can you imagine a popular commercial application forcing users to start
