Jaws cursor and firefox

Jim L

Heya folks,

For a long time now and to be honest when I do a jaws cursor on any firefox
page all I get is graphic graphic etc etc and it never reads a thing
whenever I am in that mode, I have taken the suggestion from others on here
to disable hardware accelaration or something like that and it doesn't do
anything, I currently am running latest Jaws 17 and latest firefox but all
previous versions on both gave me the same feedback with Jaws cursor and
afirefox page, if anyone can help me I'd appreciate it as i want firefox to
work like an IE page when I Jaws cursor as we know theres some things on a
website only Jaws cursor can activate.

Cheers,

Jim

chrome, lister suggestions and what I found

Adrian Spratt

When I was testing Chrome earlier this week, I posted problems I encountered and several people posted suggestions. Here's what people said and what I've found.

For my download query, Ann wrote. The context menu on the downloads page has an item that says something about open link in incognito window. The item just below that is 'save link as', which looks like 'save target as' to me.

Me. David Moore found the same thing in his podcast. Chrome says "Save link as" instead of the Moore familiar "Save target as."

Brad wrote: For the Save Link As option, I route JAWS to PC (even though the JAWS cursor reads nothing), and then right-clicked, and I could save the item linked to.

Me. While on the FS website this morning, I couldn't get the "Save link as" option to appear in the right mouse menu. I tried Brad's idea. Still nothing happened. But after I switched from the JAWS to the PC cursor, I tried the right mouse menu again, and there it was. So, the next time I reach a download link, I'll route JAWS to PC, press the PC cursor key, then press right mouse and arrow down to "save link as."

For my combo box problem, Andre wrote: I just hit the spacebar to open the combo list. Hit enter on what I want or escape to exit. That's what I have seen on my machine.

Me. there's no single solution to the combo boxes I've encountered while using Chrome. Usually, I need to press enter and then alt-down arrow to get inside a combo box. The spacebar has never worked for me here. However, once I've placed focus on my choice, escape does sometimes work. I don't recall ever using escape before to get out of a combo box.

My thanks to all three of you.

Re: Creating a short cut to open a program not on your desktop

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

It can be even simpler. Once you find the program listed in all programs, Programs, or wherever, right clicking on it will usually allow you to do the same thing.

Hi all.
I want to tell all of you the procedure to set a short cut to open a program that is not on the desktop or pinned to the start area. You can create a short cut to any program on your computer. Here is what you do.
First, press the Windows key to open the start area. up arrow once and press enter on all apps. Arrow to the program that you want to set the short cut for. If it says collapsed, press enter to open it. Now, arrow down to the program and press the applications key. Next, arrow down to open file location and press enter. Press the applications key. Now, up arrow once and enter on properties. Next, tab to the shortcut field and put in a letter. The alt and ctrl are automatically added to the short cut. Just tab to okay and press enter. Now, you can open that program with alt + ctrl + the letter without that program pinned anywhere. If the program is just on your computer, this way to create a short cut will work. Take care and I hope you enjoy this.

I posed a question about it 2 or 3 years ago, tried it, didn't like it. I can't recall now what it does, but it duplicates a function already present in JAWS.

Does Caret Browsing have any affect on Jaws or other screen readers?
IE, Firefox, and Chrome have this option. Sometimes I turn it on when
I need to turn off the virtual cursor on a challenging page. Is it OK
to have Caret Browsing all the time?

On installing a new Vocalizer voice, JAWS says to close JAWS. I found I had to reboot.

Removing System Healer with Malwarebytes or Spy Hunter

Cristóbal

Hello list,

So I don’t know how, but it seems I have some malware on one of my desktop
machines called System Healer. Browser hijacker, redirector, false positives
with prompts to buy protection tools, etc.

In any event, Looking around on how to remove it, I come across the solution
of using Spy Hunter. I’m a Malwarebytes user and on this particular machine,
I simply hadn’t’ gotten around to installing Malwarebytes (oh well). I
downloaded and ran a demo version of Malwarebytes (V 1.75) but the machine
comes up clean even though I still see System healer on my computer.

My question is this, is there a way to specifically target a process or
folder or file to scan and quarantine with Malwarebytes? Searching around, I
can select a drive or type of scan (full, quick or flash), but can’t find
anything to target a particular folder/file/process.

That aside, has anyone used Spy Hunter and have they found it to be
accessible with Jaws? In my case, JFW 17. Naturally, the scan and detect
aspects are free, but removal is only with a license. I’m not against paying
for a malware tool. I’ve got a paid version of Malwarebytes on my personal
laptop, but before I go and shell out $30 or $40, I’d like to know whether I
would even be able to use it at all without calling over the sighted wife to
the rescue.

Alternatively, has anyone dealt with this program and were they able to
remove it from their system with any particular tool that is reasonably Jaws
accessible? There are manual instructions on how to remove System healer,
but they involve delving into the registry, other system files and so on.
I’d prefer not to go that route if possible.

Thanks,

Cristobal

Re: Merge Utility - GONE!!!!!!

HAMILTON

Well, I must have missed something. I thought that the Merge Utility
disappeared in JAWS V: 17, and that this was the reason for having users store
their JAWS settings in the cloud. Are you saying that forcing JAWS users to
switch to cloud-storage, of their settings, does not happen with V: 17?

If so, there is, as you say, a year to get FS to change this/bring back the
Merge Utility in future! I know that this is not exactly what you meant; but,
it gives me some hope.

Although I will continue to encourage people to complain about this change, I
will be on the alert for more news.

shipping, which is not usually checked by default. Even though there was no

obvious means of selecting one of the four listed shipping options, I hit
Enter on the first option anyway, free shipping, and this apparently worked,

because free shipping is what I got. But it is also possible that this
option was already selected by default. Amazon is constantly tinkering with

its web site, much to the detriment of us blind consumers. But it is almost

impossible to challenge them because Jeff Bezos, recently ranked as the
fifth wealthiest person in the US, is an absolute control freak who always

Hello, all:

For the first time, I am really miffed at Amazon. Has anyone visited
recently? They have a new sign-in feature, which, of COURSE, involves
captias with no audio equivalent! They give you a link for "having
trouble or sight-impaired," but the only thing there is options for
contacting them, which I did, with an "assertive-gram", which, if
you're experiencing this issue, you might want to follow up on with
one of your own so they will listen to us, hopefully. I stated the
situation is unacceptable, since many of us are Christmas shopping
now, and requested that they immediately remedy things. If anyone has
managed to get around the captia and still do check-out, please do
email the list and let us know how you did it! Thanks!

Hi Adrian,
Seems weird, but perhaps Jaws is sending a command string to the DEC talk
when Jaws loads. I'm posting a link below which will take you to a page
which discusses, demonstrates and has some documentation for a current text
to speech chip which is sort of the current DEC talk. There is a DEC talk
manual on the page which should give command strings for the chip which may
still be valid for your DEC talk. The link is:

I will keep pondering this one, and let you know if I think of anything.

I'm trying to figure out how to restore the pitch of my preferred voice,
Paul, in JAWS 17. It is much higher than in previous versions of JAWS. I
don't know why this should be, since I wouldn't have thought JAWS had
anything to do with pitch. I find no pitch control in the JAWS voice
menus, other than for uppercase letters. I'm unaware of any pitch control
in Dectalk Express itself.

I've experimented with the other voice options on my version of Dectalk
Express, but I can't stand any of them. also, I've set the speed setting
to exactly the same rate as I've had it before.

This is obscure for most JAWS users, but does anyone have any ideas?

For the record, I've found Amazon to be extremely responsive when I and others raise accessibility issues. One of my calls a few years ago led to website changes the very next day. Generally, soon after I've read complaints on this list, those problems have been fixed.

On reading your post, which made me anxious, I went to Amazon and
logged in with my username and password. I suspect Gerald may have the
right answer. But as he says, Amazon should know better. And as you
say, anyone who encounters this new obstacle should make their
displeasure known to Amazon.

Subject: Amazon issues

Thanks!
