keystrokes vs virtual ribbons

Pablo Morales

Using the virtual ribbon, there is a way to know what are the keystrokes
associated with each item in the ribbons?

Use the ribbons helps a lot to understand the structure of the ribbons, with
the virtual ribbon off, is time consuming and is very easy to get lost
navigating with the tab key only. But with the virtual ribbons on, the
keystrokes doesn't work, and sometimes I don't know what is worse, if the
virtual ribbons on or off. But if I need to get to a place in the ribbon, I
have no way to learn the keystrokes, only deactivating the virtual ribbons
and pressing tab many many times, and probably getting lost.

So I see both ways very inconvenient.

Is there a way to get the keystrokes and at the same time keeping the logic
structure of the ribbons,?

I am trying to teach people to use MS word, and excel, but the ribbons is
very hard to make them understand the structure of each ribbons, but the
ribbon as unique tool using these programs is not going to be so efficient
in the future either.

So there is a way to get the keystrokes when we are navigating through the
virtual ribbons, and like this once we know where and what is the structure
of the ribbons, just use the keystrokes associated with each item on the
ribbons?

Thanks

Hello Soronel,

I believe you are right.
In fact, the Arduino Ide when used standalone it doesn't work with Jaws at
all.
Unfortunatlly these plugins were not developed with accessability guidelines
in mind.
I used before Visual Studio with the previous versions of Visual Micro and
Arduino IDE and although they didn't work 100%, they were much better.
Only recently I started to have all kind of problems.

Thanks,

John

VS (especially VS2013) works very well with jaws, it is only the plug-in
(which I have not used so can't help with) that seems to be the problem.

Even VS2015 works reasonably well now that I have written some basic scripts
to get rid of the line numbers and to handle debugging events.
Not anything like the packaged 2013 scripts that can also deal with the form
designer, most of what I do is native c++ so the designer isn't much of a
concern to me.

Re: The JAWS Virtual Viewer.

Adrian Spratt

Peter,

It's great that you've been posting such specific instructions, but what you describe here is not the virtual viewer. The virtual viewer is what Bill described, but it clearly has nothing to do with the Netflix solution you posted. What you're talking about here is the virtual cursor. FS should have come up with very different names for these two vital functions.

If you are new to JAWS you should use the JAWS training. This is in the

the changes made last year, have been worse for screen reader users.

I'm using the Canadian NetFlix site. Last year they updated the web site and
I lost access to the search field. It used to be an edit field that JAWS

Do the American users of NetFlix have the same problem searching for a

Re: Non-Tablet Notebooks or Laptops that Work Well with Jaws

Brad Martin

As someone else asked, what's your budget? At work, (I work for a non-profit, so we're always thinking cheap but functional), I've found a source for refurbished laptops. I've never been a fan of refurbs, but we bought four of them last year and had zero problems with them. I've also ordered a couple of their desktops, which worked well also. With this particular site, everything they have is pretty much Windows 7. You just have to be careful. Lately they've been offering machines with lots of RAM, but a 32-bit version of Windows which can't take advantage of it. If you've got the money for new, there's nothing wrong with that; but if you're on a tight budget, something like this might work for you; and compared to the Aspire you referenced, it's got a much faster processor, higher cache (though smaller hard drive), and definitely powerful enough to do most anything. And with coupon code TECH you can get it for around $340, though it looks like they only have one of this particular model left. A Latitude 5430 is a tank, and probably about two to three years old. Link is here:

For what it's worth.

I am using Netflix with IE11. It's working better than it used to. I can
find the search box now. My biggest problem now is removing DVDS from my

will need to be on the site to go through the steps.

Hello,

I think that it is a graphics issue. I have used both IE11 and Firefoxand
the changes made last year, have been worse for screen reader users.

I'm using the Canadian NetFlix site. Last year they updated the web site and
I lost access to the search field. It used to be an edit field that JAWS
could find, and now it is an icon that JAWS cannot find.

Do the American users of NetFlix have the same problem searching for a
title? Is there a way around.

Hi, Keith. The Virtual Viewer is a JAWS utility which allows all the textual information on a screen to be viewed in a buffer. You use it by pressing ALT plus JawsKey plus W. To exit the viewer, press ESCATE while in the Virtual Viewer.

Hello List,

I found the NetFlix search box.
It is on the Browse page.

Using the JAWS virtual viewer, one line has the word:
"search"
This is not an object that you can tab to like a link.

The line below has:
unlabeled button

When I left click on the right side of the word "search", the edit box
is announced. Then turn on the form mode, type the title, actor etc.
Then tab to and select the unlabeled button.

Thanks for suggesting the browse page.

Re: 2 browsers & 2 different pages. netFlix search box

I've worked with Chrome as Netflix told me that this is a more compatible
browser. I used it and all the titles were there...no numbers.

Chrome needs a companion piece with it much like IE with silverlite. Its
called Wideveign I think and you have to type something to do with
Chrome/components in the navigation bar. Sorry I can't remember exactly...

With FireFox, I am signed in and the navigation letter "e" finds the
search edit box.

Another problem, with the US site, is that all the titles are numbers.
Someone mentioned this and now I know what they were talkingabout.

Things are not right with NetFlix. I communicated this to the the
NetFlix tech support and they responded that I should call the help
line. This I had done and they did not grasp the problem that we have
using a screen reader.

Aquino, Bob, Probation <baquino@...>

All,

I'm surveying JAWS users that use the emulation program, T3270. We will be running in 64-bit Windows 7/Office 2010.
Did this program work with your JAWS users? Did you have to write scripts in order for it to work properly?

Currently we have to use 32-bit Attachmate EXTRA and 32-bit PC's for our users that use JAWS 15.
Regards,

Bob Aquino

You can find instructions for updating your operating system and JAWS and MAGic at the following:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/Support/TechnicalSupport/Windows10Upgrade

For some, the URL may need to be fixed as it split on two lines.

Using Jaws with a Surface Tablet and Braille Display

Dave Van Der Molen <dvm975@...>

If I decide to buy a Surface tablet instead of a laptop, and I use it with Jaws and a braille display that has a Perkins-style keyboard, could I operate the tablet via the braille display the same way I can operate a desktop computer using a display? Are the commands as many, and are they the same?

Also, can a person use the Tune-In Radio and MLB's At Bat apps with a Surface and Jaws?

Dave

I put it out there for a good discussion.

Most likely not, though some people have had problems with JAWS,
though
mostly upgrading from Windows 7.

I have to admit that my partially sighted son did the upgrade for me on my W 7 laptop. He had to do it twice because the laptop needed some updates, so make sure both of your PC's are completely updated. Also some people have needed sighted assistance to complete the task.
