Re: dual source headsets, where to get?

Soronel Haetir

What I would really like would be a voice modem that allows routing
the voice call through the computer's audio hardware (rather than
through a dedicated port on the modem itself or with cheap models not
at all). And then use a program on the computer for dialing, for
answering etc, Get rid of the external telephone handset entirely.

Unfortunately the only devices I have found that actually do all of
the needed tasks for this are professional level equipment geared
toward computer based call centers and the like. Regular modems have
become such commodity equipment that in order to meet the price demand
the manufacturers have stripped out every feature that is only rarely
used (which leaves the typical model pretty much a data/fax modem
regardless of any voice features advertised). Perhaps an answering
machine as well, but certainly not the full duplex voice capability
that phone conversations require.

closes
thing I found years ago was a discontinued Plantronics headset, but it
only
had the RJ headset plug for the phone side, which may or may not be
able
to
be adapted. Also, I'd like something less expensive than that. I spoke
with
Plantronics the other day, and it appeared that what they may have had
has
been discontinued so long ago that it isn't in their system any more.
The
guy told me that the only dual source headsets like that have to be
manually
switched between phone call and other source, which doesn't work if
you
switch to read something and the person on the other end says
something
you
missed. What are people doing to achieve this these days?

Re: Vocalizer with JAWS?

Soronel Haetir

You need to enable the synthesizer first, go to the jaws menu
(jaws+j), then under utilities choose ""Synthesizer and Braille
Manager".

In the manager hit the "Add remove or change" button.
Make sure Synthesizer is selected in the list and hit next.
From the check box list that follows make sure any synthesizer you
want to be able to use is checked then hit the Finish button.
Finally hit the 'Close" button to exit the synthesizer and braille manager.

You may need to restart jaws in order to have this change take effect,
I am not sure.

After doing this the synthesizer should appear in the profiles list,
also in the voice adjustment dialog.

Re: data graphing ideas?

Robert Logue

More to my point. Are there financial market analysis tools a blind person can learn to use? I haven't done math in years and don't know anything about the market. I haven't bothered to learn as it seems most of the tools are quite visual. Plus it is hard for me to keep numbers in my head.

It occurs to me that a refreshable braille display would be very helpful. However, I don't have one as I've not really need. That would be a large investment for this project.

What I need to know is if there are accessible tools I can use right now with Jaws.

Thanks.

the combination jack that combines the headset and mic on it. If one was
going to use a phone that has the same kind of jack as the iPhone, which
uses the 4-band, 3.5mm connector, does such a product exist? The closes
thing I found years ago was a discontinued Plantronics headset, but it
only
had the RJ headset plug for the phone side, which may or may not be able
to
be adapted. Also, I'd like something less expensive than that. I spoke
with
Plantronics the other day, and it appeared that what they may have had
has
been discontinued so long ago that it isn't in their system any more.
The
guy told me that the only dual source headsets like that have to be
manually
switched between phone call and other source, which doesn't work if you
switch to read something and the person on the other end says something
you
missed. What are people doing to achieve this these days?

data graphing ideas?

Robert Logue

Idea: I don't know enough to do this but would like to have some kind of universal table data chart graphing trending display. Idealy tactile but also how to make accessible in computers via audio.
Perhaps if I bought MS Office but which one? Don't like ribbons at all.
I want to find out if this is a good or bad time to buy silver.
I look at the graphs on some web pages but they are not often in accessible table format with clear headings. In fact. I haven't found one.
I suppose this can be done in XL but have never learned it and I don't have it. I also have no web building skills.

Used one of those, and it worked pretty well. Ai scrapped it because it was really uncomfortable on one side, and your ear wound up looking as if you'd gone 12 rounds.

I am wondering how you go about getting a dual source headset to be able
to
hear JFW on one side and have a phone call on the other side. Even
better,
it would be nice if the microphone sent its output back to the phone. I
tried getting quotes on a sight called Thumbtack, and I spoke with a guy

a

Re: dual source headsets, where to get?

Kimber Gardner

This was an interesting discussion. I have a solution that's not very
elegant but it works.

I have a wired earphone that plugs into my computer and I place the
earbud in one ear. Then I have a Bluetooth headset connected too the
iPhone with the earbud in my other ear. I use it for listening to
music while I work, but it also works for phone calls.

As I said, not elegant but it works.

I am surprised Plantronics never mentioned that one. Maybe there isn't a
way
to have a 3.5mm 4-ring plug for the phone end. I don't care at all about
the
play and fastforward buttons. I wonder why one needs an amplifier at all
unless you were hearing impaired.

You can visit headsets.com. They have a model made by Plantronics that
does
exactly what you're talking about here. I've included a link to the
product
page below.

Subject: dual source headsets, where to get?

I am wondering how you go about getting a dual source headset to be able
to
hear JFW on one side and have a phone call on the other side. Even
better,
it would be nice if the microphone sent its output back to the phone. I
tried getting quotes on a sight called Thumbtack, and I spoke with a guy
who
answered who does audio engineering on the side. He thinks he could make
a
cable where I could plug any headset mic in to do this, as long as it
had
the combination jack that combines the headset and mic on it. If one was
going to use a phone that has the same kind of jack as the iPhone, which
uses the 4-band, 3.5mm connector, does such a product exist? The closes
thing I found years ago was a discontinued Plantronics headset, but it
only
had the RJ headset plug for the phone side, which may or may not be able
to

The latest update seems to have fixed some of the keyboard navigation
problems intruded in the previous update. In particular; f6 is now working
more as expected. Also, tabbing through the interface does not read every
label and every control. That was a pain.

Still needs work but not quite the mess it was.

No improvement in the get info screen. Still hard to move through some long
lists. Still no hot keys in some areas.

Re: JAWS andreading viewer comments on History Channel Facebook page

david Jennette

I haven't looked at that particular page so I can't say much about it. Have
you tried the page with a different browser? I normally use Internet
Explorer but sometimes if a page doesn't do well, I'll switch to firefox and
be able to use it just fine so you might try something like that.

Subject: JAWS andreading viewer comments on History Channel Facebook page

Hi,

I ask if there are

Instruction steps for getting to individual viewer comments on

The History Channel Facebook page?

Does a FACEBOOK page have to be specially marked up

To work with a screen reader?

(I was thinking about Adobe pdf's since they have to be

Marked up to work with JAWS)

Is there another screen reader or are there special settings in JAWS that
would take one to the

Viewer comments on History Channel website which are on the far rightside
of the page but cannot be reached by JAWS.

Is there some coding for accessibility that the History Channel somehow
never heard of or bothered to use on its site?

Please I would appreciate any and all help.

Thank you very much.

Yes. That is what I was trying to do. I think that I have done the correct
thing, and, I did check the "digest" box. We'll have to see how it works out.

Jim,

Have you considered switching to digest delivery? This setting allows you to
receive list mail in daily batches.

As I said, I would rather fix this problem so that I don't get so many emails
all at the same time.

If I cannot find out how to do that, I will on subscribe using the method that
you have outlined.
