Re: Accessing Windows 10 Start Menu Search Results

Debbie April Yuille

Are you saying that JAWS does read the start search entries. I was under the
impression that it didn't read them.

Thanks
Debbie

Dear List,

I wanted to let you all know that the latest version of WindowEyes (9.2.1)
does read search results automatically in Windows 10. So, if you have
Office 2010 or later, you can take advantage of this by installing
WindowEyes for Office users, at least until FS releases a fix.

Re: submitting tickets to Zendesk sites

Brad Martin

Brent,

I'm afraid I'm not going to be any help to you. After I sent my previous message, it occurred to me (derf dederf derf) that I could access what I needed at home as easily as at work. We do use a vendor that uses Zendesk, but there are no dropdowns on their portal. There's an edit field for Subject, and edit field for Description, and an edit field for the name of the organization for which we work. Then there's a browse button in case we need to attach any files to the request, and then a submit button. So apparently the vendor doesn't use any categories. The last time I used Zendesk with a different vendor, we did have categories to select, but it wasn't a problem in 2011-2012. But I no longer have access to that instance of Zendesk. I suspect you're suffering from a move to a mobile friendly platform for Zendesk, which often breaks accessibility.

Sorry not to be of more help.

Brad

They don't identify as any link or combo box for me to use them, and turning virtual cursor off lands me on the wrong category most of the time. Apple and Uber are just two examples of sites that use this. How can I get my ticket submitted?

Hello Carolyn,
Initially you arrow and tab around until you find what you want, but as you
do Jaws is announcing the keystrokes for the particular items. Then when you
want to go there the next time you just press the keystroke.
You can press alt to go to the upper ribbon, arrow left or right to go to
the view menu, and tab until you come to the current view dialog, or you can
press alt, V, C, V. Cheers Kevin.

Hi, Les. The argument for not unchecking the Virtual Ribbon is this:
JAWS put in the "Virtual Ribbon" for those who wanted to manually navigate
the ribbons using the arrows and the Tab key. It is supposed to make the
menus more accessible, but I haven't found this to be true in most
instances.

Brad was saying that people may say to uncheck the Virtual Ribbon without
telling the person the down side of unchecking the Virtual Ribbon. This may
be true. However, some of the techs at FS tell you to check the Virtual
Ribbon, without telling you that this blocks the function of some of the
shortcuts.

To check your settings for the Virtual Ribbon Menu in JAWS:

Press JAWS KEY plus F2. Arrow down to Settings Center and press Enter.
Press the letter M until it says Miscellaneous. Press Right Arrow to
Open Miscellaneous.

Arrow down to Virtual Ribbon Menu. It will probably tell you that this
setting is unavailable except in the default configuration of JAWS.

To load the default configuration: Press Shift plus Control plus the
letter D as in dog.

Once your default configuration is loaded, you can Press the Up and
Down Arrow to see if your Virtual Ribbon Menu is checked or not. You
want it to be unchecked if you want all of the keyboard shortcuts to
work
properly.
If
it is checked, press the Space Bar to uncheck it. Then Tab to OK and
press Enter to save these settings.

I hope this helps you.

Hello Les,
I presume you mean unchecking the use of the virtual ribbon. Some people
prefer to use the virtual ribbon and keyboard around through the various
sections of the ribbons viewing all of the available options. The virtual
ribbon is quite useful when one is first acquainting themselves with the
features on the ribbon, and Jaws is announcing the keystrokes for the
various features as well. But once one is familiar with what is there, and
has memorized the keystrokes for what they want done, it is simpler and
quicker to use the keystroke rather than arrowing and tabbing all over the
place, "Short term pain for long term gain". It is one's personal preference

Cheers Kevin.

Hi List friends,

Regarding the info on losing messages in outlook, and the suggestion
to change the view menu, I need to know how to do this. The
suggestion, alt-V, c, v, did not work for me. When I bring up the
ribbons menu and enter on the "view" menu, nothing happens. It just
says "blank". I also tried arrowing and tabbing and still says
"blank".

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Carolyn. You can either use the shortcuts, or you can use the arrow keys
plus the tab key to navigate the ribbon. You just lose some of the JAWS
instructions while navigating.

Hi, Les. The argument for not unchecking the Virtual Ribbon is this:
JAWS put in the "Virtual Ribbon" for those who wanted to manually
navigate the ribbons using the arrows and the Tab key. It is supposed
to make the menus more accessible, but I haven't found this to be true
in most instances.

Brad was saying that people may say to uncheck the Virtual Ribbon
without telling the person the down side of unchecking the Virtual
Ribbon. This may be true. However, some of the techs at FS tell you to
check the Virtual Ribbon, without telling you that this blocks the
function of some of the shortcuts.

It will probably tell you that
this setting is unavailable except in the default configuration of JAWS.

Windows 10 won't be free after a year. I believe the 2020 date refers to the
end up MS support. But for now, as Brad says, who has the time? I'm waiting
for the first service pack (MS always comes out with one) and FS's first
rounds of fixes, all of which I expect will appear within the year.

Hi,

I've been following all this Windows 10 stuff with great interest, and
I just have a question (with a lot of background first):

So FS says you shouldn't use Edge, you should use Firefox or IE. (I'm
doing that now in Windows 7.) You can't use the built in mail program;
you should use something like Thunderbird or Outlook. (I'm doing that
now in Windows 7.) And you should use Adobe Reader for PDF documents.
(I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) Reviews I've read all seem to
indicate that Cortana is iffy at best.

So why should I upgrade again? I'm not being smart; I'd really like to
know if I'm going to gain anything other than having a new operating
system that I have to use in the same old ways. The only benefit I can
see is that Windows 10 will be supported beyond January of 2020, where
Windows
7 will not. Am I overlooking some wonderful new feature that should
cause me to want to hurry and upgrade? Or does the old saying, "If it
ain't broke, don't fix it," apply here? I'd really honestly like to
know if JAWS users in particular are finding anything beneficial in
the upgrade, or if it's just something fun to do to your functioning
computer to see if it will still function.

P.S. Anybody on this list from Louisiana and thinking Cortana, as in mall?

Hello Carolyn,
Initially you arrow and tab around until you find what you want, but as you
do Jaws is announcing the keystrokes for the particular items. Then when you
want to go there the next time you just press the keystroke.
You can press alt to go to the upper ribbon, arrow left or right to go to
the view menu, and tab until you come to the current view dialog, or you can
press alt, V, C, V. Cheers Kevin.

Subject: changing the "view" in outlook 2010

Hi List friends,

Regarding the info on losing messages in outlook, and the suggestion
to change the view menu, I need to know how to do this. The
suggestion, alt-V, c, v, did not work for me. When I bring up the
ribbons menu and enter on the "view" menu, nothing happens. It just
says "blank". I also tried arrowing and tabbing and still says
"blank".

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: What do I gain with Windows 10 as a blind person?

Gary King

Bill,
I don't think I'll be upgrading my current Windows 7 computer to Windows 10 in 2020. It will be 9 years old by then if it's still running. I'll just buy a shiny new computer with Windows 10, or whatever is the latest operating system, already installed. If I had a relatively new computer running Windows 8 or 8.1 though, I would probably take advantage of the free Windows 10 upgrade.

What you gain is that, in 2020, when you finally decide to upgrade, Windows10 won't be free anymore.

Subject: What do I gain with Windows 10 as a blind person?

Hi,

I've been following all this Windows 10 stuff with great interest, and I just have a question (with a lot of background first):

So FS says you shouldn't use Edge, you should use Firefox or IE. (I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) You can't use the built in mail program; you should use something like Thunderbird or Outlook. (I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) And you should use Adobe Reader for PDF documents. (I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) Reviews I've read all seem to indicate that Cortana is iffy at best.

So why should I upgrade again? I'm not being smart; I'd really like to know if I'm going to gain anything other than having a new operating system that I have to use in the same old ways. The only benefit I can see is that Windows 10 will be supported beyond January of 2020, where Windows 7 will not. Am I overlooking some wonderful new feature that should cause me to want to hurry and upgrade? Or does the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," apply here? I'd really honestly like to know if JAWS users in particular are finding anything beneficial in the upgrade, or if it's just something fun to do to your functioning computer to see if it will still function.

P.S. Anybody on this list from Louisiana and thinking Cortana, as in mall?

That's not what I meant. WindowEyes does not read all results

Dear List,

I wanted to let you all know that the latest version of WindowEyes (9.2.1)
does read search results automatically in Windows 10. So, if you have
Office 2010 or later, you can take advantage of this by installing
WindowEyes for Office users, at least until FS releases a fix.

Re: changing the "view" in outlook 2010

Kevin Hourigan <kevinthourigan@...>

Hello Les,
I presume you mean unchecking the use of the virtual ribbon. Some people
prefer to use the virtual ribbon and keyboard around through the various
sections of the ribbons viewing all of the available options. The virtual
ribbon is quite useful when one is first acquainting themselves with the
features on the ribbon, and Jaws is announcing the keystrokes for the
various features as well. But once one is familiar with what is there, and
has memorized the keystrokes for what they want done, it is simpler and
quicker to use the keystroke rather than arrowing and tabbing all over the
place, "Short term pain for long term gain". It is one's personal preference

Cheers Kevin.

Okay, what are the consequences of unchecking the use of ribbons? I
followed Bill's instructions to uncheck it, and the shortcut keys are easier
to use, but I would like to know the argument for not doing this. If it
matters, I'm running Outlook 2013 with Jaws 16. Thanks.

Yes, but some people may want to stay with the virtual ribbon, which is the
FS attempt to make ribbon navigation easier for visually impaired users.
Personally, I stayed with the regular ribbon, which is fine once you get
used to it. All I'm saying is that people considering unchecking this option
need to be aware of the consequences.

To check your settings for the Virtual Ribbon Menu in JAWS:

Press JAWS KEY plus F2. Arrow down to Settings Center and press Enter.
Press the letter M until it says Miscellaneous. Press Right Arrow to Open
Miscellaneous.

Arrow down to Virtual Ribbon Menu. It will probably tell you that this
setting is unavailable except in the default configuration of JAWS.

To load the default configuration: Press Shift plus Control plus the letter
D as in dog.

Once your default configuration is loaded, you can Press the Up and Down
Arrow to see if your Virtual Ribbon Menu is checked or not. You want it to
be unchecked if you want all of the keyboard shortcuts to work properly. If
it is checked, press the Space Bar to uncheck it. Then Tab to OK and press
Enter to save these settings.

I hope this helps you.

Subject: Possibly Off Topic: Strange Outlook 2010 problem

Hello, everyone.

I have a strange Outlook 2010 problem on my work laptop that I could use
some help with. It is a Windows 7 laptop with Jaws 16.0.4350.

To give a bit of background, I have Outlook 2010 running with two e-mail
accounts. One is my work e-mail account, and the other is my personal
g-mail account for which I use the IMAP interface.

Most of the time, when I write an e-mail in my g-mail IMAP account, two
copies of my note end up in my sent file. I have always thought this to be
a bit strange, but never worried about it too much since most of my e-mails
are simple text messages that don't take up much space. Recently, I have
noticed that sometimes, when I write an e-mail in my personal g-mail
account, one copy of the message goes into my sent file, but the other copy
winds up in the sent file for my work account. I know that the e-mails go
out, but I'm just not sure why this is happening. Furthermore, I can't
find a consistent explanation for, or patterning to this behavior.

Any thoughts on this issue would be appreciated.

If this quiry is considered to be off topic for this list, feel free to
respond to me at:

tombehler@gmail.com

Thank you!

Hi Keith,

Try the following:

While in Windows Explorer, go to Tools and then folder options.
Next, move to the view tab, and then the tree-view, and uncheck the
following:
show preview handlers in preview payne.
This problem does not occur on every Win7 machine, but it has been found that unchecking this option has corrected the problem on several systems.
This crops up on some 32 and 64-bit systems.

Take care.

Re: submitting tickets to Zendesk sites

Hi,
Find a sighted person. Sadly I'm not being flippant or cute. I've found no way around it. this is a known issue to them it's been reported to them by many as well as to the companies or software providers that make use of their help desk services to no avail thus far.
Feel free to join the chorus of frustrated users.
Sorry there isn't better news to report on that front.

I need to submit a ticket to a site that uses Zendesk. However, whether I use JFW with Chrome or Firefox, or even try to do it on my phone with iOS, I can't get past the drop down boxes to select the category. They don't identify as any link or combo box for me to use them, and turning virtual cursor off lands me on the wrong category most of the time. Apple and Uber are just two examples of sites that use this. How can I get my ticket submitted?

I wonder what causes them to show up if there isn't anything there? hmm...

Re: Help with recurring Windows Explorer problem

Hi Keith,

Try the following:

While in Windows Explorer, go to Tools and then folder options.
Next, move to the view tab, and then the tree-view, and uncheck the
following:
show preview handlers in preview payne.
This problem does not occur on every Win7 machine, but it has been found
that
unchecking this option has corrected the problem on several systems.
This crops up on some 32 and 64-bit systems.
HTH,

Take care.

Running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and latest JAWS 16.

When I go in to Windows Explorer and look at folders and files, it seems to
hang on me.

I get the following message after receiving a dialog to Wait for program to
resume or Exit the program. What does this mean, and what should I do next?
Thanks.

Hi, Carolyn. You can either use the shortcuts, or you can use the arrow keys plus the tab key to navigate the ribbon. You just lose some of the JAWS instructions while navigating.

Ribbon, without telling you that this blocks the function of some of the
shortcuts.

Okay, what are the consequences of unchecking the use of ribbons? I
followed Bill's instructions to uncheck it, and the shortcut keys are
easier to use, but I would like to know the argument for not doing
this. If it matters, I'm running Outlook 2013 with Jaws 16. Thanks.

Yes, but some people may want to stay with the virtual ribbon, which
is the FS attempt to make ribbon navigation easier for visually
impaired users.
Personally, I stayed with the regular ribbon, which is fine once you
get used to it. All I'm saying is that people considering unchecking
this option need to be aware of the consequences.

You
want it to be unchecked if you want all of the keyboard shortcuts to work
properly.
If
it is checked, press the Space Bar to uncheck it. Then Tab to OK and
press Enter to save these settings.

I hope this helps you.

Hi, Les and Barbara. Could this problem with pressing:
ALT plus V, followed by C, followed by V, be related to whether the
Virtual Ribbon is checked or unchecked in your Default Configuration
Menu?

This keyboard shortcut may work only if the Virtual Ribbon option
under Miscellaneous is unchecked.

Re: submitting tickets to Zendesk sites

Brad Martin

I haven't had to use Zendesk in a couple of years. When I used to use it for work, I don't remember having any problems; but they could've redone their interface since then. I may have access to a Zendesk product at work. (Our vendor uses Zendesk, but we usually just interact with it by Email, so I haven't tried the other way.) If you don't get a satisfactory answer by tomorrow, shoot me an Email to my work address
bmartin@uwswa.org
and I'll see if I can replicate the problem.
