Andre's way is an oldie but a goody. I used it back before AR was accessible; but Bill is right, it won't do a thing for an image file. Even when it works, it's not the most attractive document around.

That's not going to work in this case, because all she is getting in the document are graphics. She may need to convert the document with OCR software such as OpenBook. she can also use the services of RoboBraille if she can upload the document.

I'll include the link for her here.

Another possible way. I did this yesterday. Opened a 245 page PDF. Then
I
selected all using control-A. Then copied and pasted directly into a
blank
Word doc. Then saved the Word Doc under the book title name. Now it
opens
in Word remarkably fast and reads very well. It might be searchable.
Hope
this helps.

I use latest J16, Office and Word 2010 on my I5 Dell laptop.

If you have JAWS 16, have it convert the document for you. Press
insert-spacebar, then the letter o for optical character recognition,
then d for document, and let it run. When JAWS has finished, the
document is not only readable, but it can be copied and saved into
another form, such as Word or text.

good luck!

Check the HP Office Jet line. You won't need the buttons to print, but they will come in handy for scanning.

feedback from those of you who use JAWS on one of these. I've seen some
pretty good deals on Tablets recently, but wonder which one would be the
best. I know that I want Windows 8.1 and not RT. Does it really make a
big
difference if I end up with a 32 Gig machine or a 64. Does JAWS perform
poorly on one model or another? Just trying to make the best choice. Any
feedback would be welcomed. Many thanks!

Hi, Adrian. The problem with the Bank of America site is that now, the user I.D. and the password must be entered on the same page. If you find the password field on the same page as the box for your user I.D., the false error about a user I.D. being more than eight characters will disappear, and you will be able to log into the Bank of America site.

Again, there is nothing wrong with the site, or with your login. Just find the password box before you sign in with your username, and all will be well.

I've had this problem for the past week. When I go to the sign-in page and enter my username, I get a message saying the username must be at least six characters long. (Mine has more.) It seems the system isn't recognizing that I've entered the data in the edit field.

I've toggled the virtual cursor on and off. When entering the data in the edit field fails to get me to the next screen, I've gone back and pressed enter on the edit field before entering the username. Still no success.

When I turn on the JAWS cursor, I notice that my username appears on the screen.

Anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas?

Hi Rick,

You would need to go to Freedom Scientific's website & download the latest
build & use it for the repair or, remove your current version of Jaws but,
leave shared settings & shared components. Then, run the latest J16
installer. Below are the direct download links for both 32 & 64 bit:

Hi Rick,

Below are 2 sets of steps for repairing Jaws. The 1st set of steps
areFreedom Scientific's recommended steps:

The steps below are the best, most in depth, and most thorough way of
repairing Jaws according to Freedom Scientific Tech Support.

Note; jaws11 is the example, however, this will work for 12, 13, 14, 15, &
16 as well.

1. Place a copy of the Jaws executible version that you want to repair
into
the main root of the " C " drive. For example; If you are running Jaws11
most recent you would paste a copy of " J11.0.1430-32bit.exe " into the
main
root of the " C " drive. To open the main root of the " C " drive, go to
the desktop, press enter on My Computer, press enter on Local disk C, and
now you have the main root of the " C " drive open.
2. With the Jaws " .exe " pasted into the "C" drive, highlight the " .exe
", and press F2 as if you were going to edit this line of text. now press
control + C to copy this Jaws executible, press escape to close the edit
field, and press Alt + F4 to close the C drive.
What you want to do is place just the title of the Jaws version into the
Windows Run Dialogue box and not the file. If you were to place the Jaws
executible into the Run box without copying as you did as per the
instructions above you would have pasted the whole file into the Run Box
instead of just the title.
3. Now that you have just the title copied to the clipboard, press Windows
key + R to open the Run Dialogue Box. Type, remember to type a capitalC
,"
C:\ " without the quotes or
spaces and press control + V to paste the Jaws title, press your end key
to
take the cursor to the end of the title and type in the following " /type
repair" without the quotes but, with the spaces . Below is what your line
of text should look / read like.

C:\J11.0.1447-32bit.exe /type repair

Read character by character to make sure you have put in the proper
spaces,
Forward & back slashes and text. press the home key to go to the front of
the title and press enter to start the repair.

A 2nd way to do the same thing.
From: Brian Lee
Hello Jim,

You might have already resolved the problem, but if not here is a link
that
you can use to download the newest update for your 64-bit installation of
JAWS. Information about performing the repair is shown below after the
download link.

ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/JAWS/J11.0.1430-
64
bit.exe

After downloading the file you can do the following steps to repair the
installation:

1. Use Windows key with R to bring up the run dialog box.

2. Use tab key to the browse button and press spacebar.

3. Browse to the downloaded JAWS setup file and press enter key.

4. Use tab key to move to where JAWS says "open colon edit combo", press
the end key and then press spacebar.

5. Type in /Type repair, (that is first type a slash followed immediately
by the word type then a space and then the word repair.

6. Use tab key to the OK button and press enter key.

7. Follow the prompts.

Take care.

Re: I can't sign in at Bank of America

Adrian Spratt

Dave,

Your suggestion finally motivated me to test the new "semi-auto" forms mode, as well as manual. I think I'm going to revert to manual because pages load more quickly. With forms mode on full or semi auto, JAWS pops into an edit field when a page loads, which itself takes a moment, and then I usually need another moment to extricate it with the PC cursor.

Using manual forms mode, I think I've determined my BofA problem isn't with JAWS, but with the bank suddenly not remembering my username. It means another call to the banks' miserable customer service phone line.

Subject: I can't sign in at Bank of America

I've had this problem for the past week. When I go to the sign-in page and
enter my username, I get a message saying the username must be at least six
characters long. (Mine has more.) It seems the system isn't recognizing that
I've entered the data in the edit field.

I've toggled the virtual cursor on and off. When entering the data in the
edit field fails to get me to the next screen, I've gone back and pressed
enter on the edit field before entering the username. Still no success.

When I turn on the JAWS cursor, I notice that my username appears on the
screen.

Anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas?

Hi! If you press control plus FN key plus left arrow, that will take you
the top of the page. Control plus FN key plus right arrow will take you to
the bottom. Control plus FN key plus up/down arrow will perform the page up
and page down functions. Hope this is helpful.

Subject: HP laptop

Hi

Work gave me a hp ultrabook laptop, whichhas no insert button, or page
up/down/previous/next page. I've figured out the fn key plus the arrow keys
will do the page up etc.

Insert is FN plus ctrl and print screen button, does anyone know another way
of doing this? I've tried capslock plus print screen, this doesn't work.
Also when I'm typing the cursor jumps about, consequently I make mistakes.
Is there a way of disabling the mouse? I've had this done, but once I
restart the laptop the mouse pad is active again.

I would really really appreciate some help with this.

Kind Regards, Hassan.

I've yet to run into a character limit with filenames in Win7, unlike previous versions of Windows. And as Michal indicated, spaces are allowed.

How long can folder names and file names be in Windows 7? Are spaces permitted?

Thanks in advance, Keith

Re: Soronel, How many characters can be in a folder or file name in Win 7?

Soronel Haetir

The 32768 is the total character limit. As I said, if using NTFS
(which is the default for hard drives) each level of the file system
is limited to 256 characters but there is also a total limit of 32768
characters, that total limit includes any leading drive specifier and
all path separators (the "c:\"and the '\' characters).

That 32768 character limit also applies if you are doing something on
the network and there it includes machine and share names.

IEFoexample you might have a network path like:
\\my_computer\c_drive\users\myself\documents\some_file.doc

Such a path cannot exceed 32768 characters in total length. Honestly,
I would be very scared if you ever got anywhere close to that length.

Hi Adrian,

Yes, I use the, Jaws key + 4, keystroke quite often. I also have notes on
both ansi & ascii characters, & play around with them from time to time,
mainly out of extreme boredom. LOL LOL

I found it interesting that typing, 1,6,3, produced 1 thing & typing,
0,1,6,3, produced another. I should know better because those are 2 totally
different numbers when using ansi / ascii code. What I don't know is, when
you press the NumPad 5 key 3 times on a symbol, if Jaws is giving you ansi
or ascii code numbers.

Take care.

Northstar tells listers what to do when symbols aren't readily available

contribution from FS. There you can find, for example, em-dash and en-dash,

The easy way using jaws is to use the jaws+4 dialog, the pound symbol

There is a way using the numpad but it's a pain because you have to
know the character number for the symbol you want.

Re: Editing JAWS Special Keys List VKeyboard.jsm

In my vkeyboard.jsm (latest jfw 16) file the tab is consistently used
to separate items in the lists. There are some items that show up
blank because characters are used that the font can't represent, but
those items are still separated by tabs.

Yes, but the script formatting in the description headers is bizarre. There

substitute my 6 special characters in place of 6 others already in the list.

I certainly don't see anything in vkeyboard.jss that looks like a static

Re: Editing JAWS Special Keys List VKeyboard.jsm

Dave...

Soronel,

Yes, but the script formatting in the description headers is bizarre. There
are tabs in some places, but not in others. I've not yet figured out the
purpose of the various tabs in the "Acute Capitals" section to correctly
insert more characters. If I can't figure it out, then I'll need to just
substitute my 6 special characters in place of 6 others already in the list.

I'm pretty sure all that is needed is changing both the appropriate
symbol and description lists in vkeyboard.jsm and then re-compiling
vkeyboard.jss.

I certainly don't see anything in vkeyboard.jss that looks like a static
count.

Hello Soronel,

I recall that you need to edit not only the list, but change some
parameters
to define a new list length? Do you perhaps still have the process?

And if you are a masochist you can even expand the list.

You have to edit VKeyboard.jsm and then recompile VKeyboard.jss but it
is possible. I forget what symbol I added to an earlier jaws version
but I don't do that any more.

Like Soronel and you, I find typing ANSI/ASCII equivalents frustrating.
Northstar tells listers what to do when symbols aren't readily available
from other sources. But the JAWS key+4 partial symbols list is a nice
contribution from FS. There you can find, for example, em-dash and
en-dash,
ellipses, and numerous accented letters. Oh, and the pounds sterling
sign.

Hi Adrian & Northstar,

I'm not saying this to argue the ansi or ascii value of the sterling
pounds

number, but when I press the, NumPad 5 key, 3 times quickly on the
sterling

pounds symbol, it gives me a unicode number of 163. But yet, if I turn
the

numpad on, hold down the Alt key, press 1, 6, 3, turn the numpad off, I
get,

ú. doing what Norstar suggests & typing, 1, 5, 6 does give me the, £,
symbol. Whoops, I just tried typing, 0,1,6,3, & did get the, £, symbol.
Damn, this ansi / ascii stuff can get confusing! LOL LOL
Take care.

Actually, you can make JAWS verbalize pound sterling on an American
keyboard. I copied the symbol into my JAWS dictionary and spelled out
pound

for my "replacement word."

hmmm, turn numlock and hold your alt key down and
on the numpad while holding the alt key down
enter 156 and you when you release the alt key
you should have the sterling pound sign like this: £

of course, jaws will not say anything but the symbol is there.

Hi
Is there a way, on an American keyboard, to
type a British Pound sign? Thanks for any help.
