Re: Pound Sign in Jaws

Hi Adrian,

Yes, I use the, Jaws key + 4, keystroke quite often. I also have notes on
both ansi & ascii characters, & play around with them from time to time,
mainly out of extreme boredom. LOL LOL

I found it interesting that typing, 1,6,3, produced 1 thing & typing,
0,1,6,3, produced another. I should know better because those are 2 totally
different numbers when using ansi / ascii code. What I don't know is, when
you press the NumPad 5 key 3 times on a symbol, if Jaws is giving you ansi
or ascii code numbers.

Take care.

Like Soronel and you, I find typing ANSI/ASCII equivalents frustrating.
Northstar tells listers what to do when symbols aren't readily available
from other sources. But the JAWS key+4 partial symbols list is a nice
contribution from FS. There you can find, for example, em-dash and en-dash,
ellipses, and numerous accented letters. Oh, and the pounds sterling sign.

Hi Adrian & Northstar,

I'm not saying this to argue the ansi or ascii value of the sterling pounds
number, but when I press the, NumPad 5 key, 3 times quickly on the sterling
pounds symbol, it gives me a unicode number of 163. But yet, if I turn the
numpad on, hold down the Alt key, press 1, 6, 3, turn the numpad off, I get,
ú. doing what Norstar suggests & typing, 1, 5, 6 does give me the, £,
symbol. Whoops, I just tried typing, 0,1,6,3, & did get the, £, symbol.
Damn, this ansi / ascii stuff can get confusing! LOL LOL
Take care.

Actually, you can make JAWS verbalize pound sterling on an American
keyboard. I copied the symbol into my JAWS dictionary and spelled out pound
for my "replacement word."

And if you are a masochist you can even expand the list.

You have to edit VKeyboard.jsm and then recompile VKeyboard.jss but it
is possible. I forget what symbol I added to an earlier jaws version
but I don't do that any more.

There is a way using the numpad but it's a pain because you have to
know the character number for the symbol you want.

Adding video to Powerpoint 2013 presentations?

Matthew Bullis

Hello, I've read the directions online for including an online video in a Powerpoint presentation. These include pressing the share and imbed buttons, then copying the link. I have access to both 2010 and 2013 versions, but it seems that the accessibility in 2013 has broken. In 2010, there's a tabbable interface where you can paste the link in, then an insert button. However, in 2013, tabbing doesn't really get anywhere. Is there indeed an accessible way to get this done, or some workaround?
Thanks,
Matthew

Exactly! And I just want to remind everyone that this feature was introduced
in JAWS 16. So, if you are using an earlier version, you must upgrade to

so, it's like bypass mode for a webpage, passing on the keystroke to the webpage's use?

Now, the answer to your question:

Certain interactive Web sites may offer hot keys to perform some common
tasks. For example, on the Facebook Web site you can press P to post a
status, L to like a story, C to comment on a story, or J and K to scroll
between News Feed stories. However, these keystrokes also conflict with JAWS
Navigation Quick Keys.
When this check box is selected, any JAWS keystrokes that are also defined
as hot keys by a Web site will perform the site specific task instead of the
JAWS command. This check box is cleared by default
Take care.

Okay Group, here is the first stupid question of the day.

What would be the purpose for enabling application keystrokes
on a webpage?

Thanks very much, Mike. I got it.

Hi Keith,

Try the following:

1. Open the Settings Center & then the default Settings Center for all applications.
2. Arrow down to, Web / HTML / PDFs, & press right arrow to open.
3. Arrow down to, Miscellaneous, right arrow to open.
4. Arrow down to, Allow Web Application Reserve keystrokes, & press the spacebar to check it.
5. Tab to, Apply, press the spacebar, tab to the, Okay button, press enter to save & close.
HTH
Take care.

Hi, Keith. This menu item is only in the very latest update to JAWS. It was
discussed here on the list a couple of days ago, but since I don't have that
version of JAWS, I can't tell you where it is. All I know is that it is a
check box, and that it is called "Allow Application Reserved Keystrokes".

Hi,

OK. I'm totally stumped. I swear I've looked in every menu item and list
in JAWS, but I just can't find a setting to enable application keystrokes
on a webpage.

Please help. I hope I'm clear in my request. Sorry if not.

Thanks, Keith
