Auto-text JFW 16, Word 2010

Gudrun Brunot

Desperate plea for help!

I have a humongous job, 100 100 audio files (phone calls) which need to be
translated from Swedish to English, then transcribed. I've been trying to
use autotext, but they disappear. Below follows what I thought the procedure
should be:

Creating autotext entries

First, select existing text, or type in the string you want as the autotext
content. To avoid inadvertently adding a carriage return at the end of the
string, do not separate your strings with carriage returns (word will select
past your last character, and you get the return whether you want it or
not). Insert menu, quickparts, save building block: alt-n, q, s. Dialogue
opens. /some of the fields have mnemonics, some don't)

First field is name. Tab to next field. Fields occur in the following order:

1. Name, (no available mnemonic letter you can hear with Jaws ) Here,
type in the combination you want to use for evoking the string. The text you
typed or selected before will be there by default, but it disappears as you
type in your own abbreviation.

2. save as (g, normal or building block, select building block, there
by default.);

3. Category (abbreviation c): Here, either select general (by
default, or arrow down to New;

4. Description (type in something that clearly indicates what will be
typed in, including whether anything is capitalized, followed by a space or
not);

5. Options (o): Here, select Contents Only if you want the text
entered without anything extra, just as is. "in its own paragraph" or "on
its own page."

6. Save (s): Just tab past here.

7. Ok. (no letter). Just hit enter.

So, I type in a whold bunch of stuff, the the autotext seems to bring up
what I expect. One day, I had as many as 60 entries. Then, the next day,
they wwere in effect for a while, then, they disappear.

I've set up autotexts twice, but only a few remain. I've even corrected some
autotexts on day that were duplicates, but they came back-the duplicate that
I had deleted.

It's driving me to drinking. Help desperately needed.

If you used it recently in Word, try the recent files. Alt-f, r, tab.

You must use the laptop keyboard layout settings in JAWS instead of the Desktop layout. This is found in the JAWS basic settings.

Hi,

If I am using the JAWS cursor and need to activate with a right or left click, how do I do that on a laptop keyboard that doesn't have a NumPad?

Thanks in advance,

Michael and all:

I too just saw this problem today for the first time on my Windows 7 work
laptop.

I tried typing in a reply to a message, and the reply could be found
nowhere.

Fortunately for me, I re-booted, and all seems well, at least for now.

I'm using Jaws version 16.0.3048 here with Outlook 2010.

Re: searching for files

Adrian Spratt

Mario,

If I understand you correctly, you're not asking how to find a file, but instead, how to find its path. Yes? If you have Win7 set up in so-called "classic" mode (I don't), the following instructions should work. Meanwhile, I'll try to remember how I figured this out when not set up in classic mode.

go to control panel, open folder options, control tab to view, tab twice to list view then arrow down and check both add path to title bar and address bar. when this is done click apply then ok. Now when you highlight the folder you can tab to the address bar and copy the path.

Any scan that's not OCR is an image, so photos are a snap with most scanners, and they will come with a full complement of photo software.

Space for a flatbed scanner is always a consideration. I do not share Marshall's problem because I have a very nice computer desk with a cabinet in the lower right area of the desk that nicely accommodates my printer/scanner and sits on a sliding pad. When I need to print, copy or scan, I simply open the cabinet door, slide the printer out and perform the necessary task. When completed, it easily slides back into the cabinet.

I am not 100% sure about scanning photographs, but my sighted wife believes the HP 3820 does scan photos.

Hi Carolyn,
I purchased an all-in-one printer last year and found out a couple of
things. The first is that in order to place a document on the scanner
bed;I had to put the scanner directly in front of me on my desk. This
took up a lot of useful space. I also found that placing a document
on the scanner while sitting down required stretching uncomfortably.
Also, if you don't do a lot of printing and don't need color printing.
I'd get a laser printer. While the cartridge is more expensive than
one for an inkjet printer, it lasts longer Marshall

Once you enter all or part of the filename, the search will come up with
different categories, such as files, documents, messages, etc. Just use your
cursor arrow keys to move up and down through the list to see if your file
shows up.

One out of two ain't bad. It was a shot in the dark. I've experienced dictionary problems once or twice following new installations, and resolved them by doing what I suggested, and I know those form settings can be tricky. Hello, everyone.

I'm still having issues typing characters into the edit box when on the internet with my home Windows 7 PC.

I can arrow down or tab until I hear the forms mode sound, but when I type, nothing gets entered into the edit box.

I had someone sighted check, and nothing gets entered onto the screen when I do the typing in forms mode, even though the sound indicates I'm in forms mode.

I find the issue both in Internet Explorer and in Firefox. And, I have tried performing searches on several different web sites where info needs to be entered into the search box.

Is there a Jaws or other setting I should check to troubleshoot the issue?

For the record, I'm using Jaws 14 on this particular computer.

Thank you!

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

Hi,

As you type, you should hear results according to the letters you’ve typed so far. When you hear the first result, you can either type more letters to narrow the results, or press the down arrow to move through a list of results.

Re: Strange issue with Outlook 2013.

Hi Michael,

Yes, I too have this problem with Jaws losing focus when replying to a message. I never really noticed if it happens when I am entering dates, but will try to notice next time it happens. I am using the latest version of Jaws 16 on a Yoga Pro 2 laptop running Windows 8.1.

Thanks,

Russell

Re: "Save," Will Not Work

Russell Solowoniuk

Hi Rick,

Another thought crossed my mind. Many web forms require information to be entered in a specific way, for example, no dashes or spaces in the credit card number, the expiry date in a certain format etc. If the info in any field is not entered correctly, when you press the “Save” button an error message will pop up explaining where and what the error is. If the page is coded with accessibility in mind, the focus will be placed in this popup, and Jaws will read it to you. Many times, however, the message pops up when you press save, but Jaws doesn’t read the message, so you have no idea what is going on.

The only way I find to remedy this is to go to the top of the page and read the entire page looking for an error message. Sometimes it’s at the top of the page, and other times it’s directly following the field where the error is located.

Good luck!

Russell

If you are in a combo box use the ALT+down arrow to open it. Make your
changes in your credit card number, then close it with the ALT+up arrow,
then choose your save button and press enter. I find when something like
this happens to me its because I did not do this. Hope this helps.

Re: deleting Skype messages

Stan Bobbitt

Hi Daniel,
I'm not sure how to delete individual messages but I dump everything through options by clearing history. I believe you have to be signed in to skype for this to work
Press CTRL plus comma to open options. This may take a few seconds to open.
Arrow down to privacy, then tab down to "clear history" and hit spacebar.
Then tab on down through a lot of settings to save and spacebar again. There you go ...

Listmates

Can the messages exchanged on Skype be deleted? If yes, how?

Hi,

Can you up-date your Internet Explorer to 11? Not sure that you can, but
might help. Also call Microsoft disability help desk. They are helpful. You
should call Freedom Scientific. They need to be aware of all the problems
that we all are having with JAWS.

Hi,

You might try refreshing the screen with Insert + escape and then try
activating the save button.
