Ted:

Another list member and I worked on that strategy yesterday, and although it
fixed the problem in Firefox, the problem in IE 11 is still there.

Am waiting on a return call from FS tech support, hopefully later this
morning.

Tom, this is weird, but it may work. Try redoing your forms mode settings.
I don't mean they're wrong, or not what you want. Just try fiddling with
them again, and see if it helps. Sounds weird, but experience tells me it
might work

I thought I had tried the space bar before, but just to be sure, I tried it
again. Still no luck.

Again, I get the higher click that indicates I'm in forms mode, but no text
gets entered when I type.

Hitting F5 to refresh the screen doesn't help either.

Hello, everyone.

I'm still having issues typing characters into the edit box when on the
internet with my home Windows 7 PC.

I can arrow down or tab until I hear the forms mode sound, but when I type,
nothing gets entered into the edit box.

I had someone sighted check, and nothing gets entered onto the screen when I
do the typing in forms mode, even though the sound indicates I'm in forms
mode.

I find the issue both in Internet Explorer and in Firefox. And, I have
tried performing searches on several different web sites where info needs to
be entered into the search box.

Is there a Jaws or other setting I should check to troubleshoot the issue?

For the record, I'm using Jaws 14 on this particular computer.

Thank you!

Hi, Lisle. Something tells me this isn't going to work. This is for two reasons. First, Tom did several JAWS repairs. Second, the forms mode settings would need to be wrong in two files (the one for IE and the one for Firefox) for this to be an effective remedy.

Good news! App for iOS works fine.

In defense of Netflix, they have always fixed problems in the past. I just
wish that they would fix problems before they break them.

I have subscribed to Netflix for many years. There have been several bad
sites. Eventually, they did fix them. So there is hope.

Hi Gennie,

Good news on the iOS version working. Maybe there is hope Netflix will fix

things for us old-fashioned Windows computer users.

I think this is a Jaws problem, which is why I'm trying to work with the
folks at Freedom Scientific first.

However, I am still wondering if some sort of a tool bar is operating

the scene, such as Bing, although neither I nor the Jaws help can find it.

So, contacting the Microsoft Accessibility Help Line may be a next step,

I do have that number, so I'm all set on that score.

Tom,

Have you talked to the people at Microsoft's disability help desk? They can
take over your computer and work on it. You might have to have sighted help
to connect because you do have to type in stuff. If you need the number,
let
me know and I will look it up.

Tom,

You might want to try installing IE10 to see if the edit fields open
properly. If they do then it is likely IE11 on your machine is corrupt.
It
kind of sounds that way.

If edit fields do not open properly then you have a good reference to work
with Freedom Scientific. Worst case Windows 7 and/or Microsoft Office
might
have to be reinstalled or rebuilt in some way. Hopefully this is not the

Hello, again, everyone.,

Well, it has been a frustrating few hours here.

I have had three phone sessions with Freedom Scientific Tech Support today,
and my problem with entering text into edit fields when in forms mode on
the
internet has still not been solved.

I won't name names here, but will summarize the results of each session.

Session 1: It was suggested that, since I have Jaws 14 on the home Windows
7 PC, that I upgrade to Jaws 16. The rationale for this was that I am
using
Internet Explorer 11, which was not supported until Jaws 15. The thinking
was that Jaws 16 would solve the issue. I upgraded to Jaws 16.0.3048, but
the problem still persisted, both with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

Session 2: It was suggested that the Avast antivirus software was the
problem, and was likely confflicting with Jaws. So, I un-installed avast,
using the Avast removal tool from the avast.com web site while in safe
mode.
Still no change.

Session 3: After trying a number of basic settings, which all proved to
be ok, a major Jaws repair was invoked. The Jaws repair did not change the
situation. In fact, I now think Internet Explorer and Firefox actually
work a bit worse than they did before.

As a result of this last session, my case has been "escalated" to the next
level of assistance. I have been given a ticket number, and hope to hear
from FS tech support within the next day or two.

I'm sure glad I have my work laptop to use as a backup!

Assuming you mean Word 2010, there's more than one way to navigate a table.
For me, the easiest is to use the Tab key to move forward one cell, and
Shift-Tab to move back. This moves you through the first row and, when you
get to the last cell in the row, it moves to the first cell on the next row
and so on. The text in each cell is selected as you move to it, and when you
get to the last cell in the table, pressing Tab adds a new, empty row. You
get warned when you're in the last cell, but it's still easy to create a new
row by mistake.

My preferred method to navigate tables is to use Alt-Ctrl-arrows to move up,
down, left and right by one cell. Each cell you move to is read but the
content isn't selected. You can't move beyond the first or last cell of the
row or column you're in, and you can't create new rows by mistake. You can
jump to the first and last cell in the table with Alt-Ctrl-Home and
Alt-Ctrl-End.

Bookmarks are on the Insert tab: Alt, N, K if you aren't using the virtual
ribbon or Alt, I, L, B if you are. Or use the shortcut Ctrl-Shift-F5 to
bypass the ribbon. All three methods open a dialogue that lists the existing
bookmarks. To move to an existing bookmark, arrow to the one you want and
press Enter to move to it, then Enter again to close the dialogue. Or type
the name of a new bookmark and press Enter to add it, then Enter again to
close the dialogue. If you're creating a new bookmark, you'll need to put
your focus at the point you want the bookmark to be before you open the
dialogue. The bookmark dialogue has other options. The easiest way to find
out about them is to press F1 while you're in the dialogue to open Microsoft
help on bookmarks. You'll be in a search area but if you press F6 twice or
Shift-F6 once you'll be in the help area which is a web page. Alt-F4 when
you've finished to return to Word.

Hope that helps,
Steve

Speaking of trouble entering information into the forms mode field, has
anyone had trouble getting past the forms mode field on certain websites?
On the site, www.classicflix.com, I have incredible trouble getting past
any
of the forms mode fields. When I pass one, the cursor darts back to the
top
of the page and I'm limited to reading everything until I get to that forms
mode field! If anyone has had this problem, no matter what the site (or,
if
you've had experience with the Classic Flix website), please respond and
let
me know what to do about this. Again, this could easily be a JAWS issue,
again not keeping up with graphics on modern websites and how they can be
obstacles, but I'm not going to play tech savvy and diagnose a problem that
could be something totally other!

I tested only the first page. I got to the edit fields with e. From there, I
was able to arrow down without a problem. When, instead, I entered an edit
field, I got out by pressing the PC cursor key and was still able to
continue arrowing down to the bottom. I'm using the latest release of JAWS

Kevin,

After downloading the latest J16 I get bounced around the webpage some.
Not
a lot. When it happens it is very confusing for a few moments til I figure
what happened. Maybe a JAWS thing. Let us know your findings. I will do
the same.

Dave:

As far as I can tell, all add-ons are disabled. This was also confirmed by
at least one of the FS tech support folks yesterday.

I'll bring this up again, though, when we have our next session, hopefully
soon.

At least I have my work laptop as a bback-up here.

Tom,

This may have already been tried, but have you gone to the tools/Manage
Add-ons menu and disabled most or all of your current add-ons?

Jenny:

I think this is a Jaws problem, which is why I'm trying to work with the
folks at Freedom Scientific first.

However, I am still wondering if some sort of a tool bar is operating
behind
the scene, such as Bing, although neither I nor the Jaws help can find it.

So, contacting the Microsoft Accessibility Help Line may be a next step,
and
I do have that number, so I'm all set on that score.

Thanks for the good suggestion.

Tom,

Have you talked to the people at Microsoft's disability help desk? They can
take over your computer and work on it. You might have to have sighted help
to connect because you do have to type in stuff. If you need the number,
let
me know and I will look it up.

During one of our sessions, the tech support representative returned IE 11
back to the default settings, but that didn't seem to help.

Of course, that might not help if my IE instalation is corrupt anyway.

Will keep this suggestion in mind.

Hopefully this is not the
case. Just a thought.

forms mode using IE and Firefox on home Windows 7 PC

I am always interested how each of us uses jaws differently. I find table
navigation is best done, when in the table use alt control and the arrows
keys. This way you can arrow from cell to cell in any direction.

Subject: RE: About word 210

Hope that helps,
Steve

OS is the usual abbreviation for operating system. Add a lowercase "I"
before it, and maybe you think of Apple. Jenny is reporting that the app for

Hi Amy,

Just getting into programming myself so only using notepad at present,
but
would be interested to hear if anyone came back to you with any
suggestions
for good text editors as notepad does the job for me but I'm sure there
are
better programs out there.

Subject: question about accessible text editors for scripting

Hi All - I'm looking for an accessible text editor (Windows) for writing
program scripts (specifically for Matlab, which is somewhat like C but
unique to Matlab). I've tried EdSharp and it works pretty well, but
looking
for something else that is updated. I use both Jaws and Magic, and need
the
editor to work with both simultaneously. I've looked into UltraEdit, and
as
others have reported, it seems to work well with Jaws, but Magic only
tracked the cursor in SayAll, not when I move word to word or line to
line.
Whatever editor I use has to have a Go To Line command for debugging. I
think that rules out Notepad and Wordpad. I've read that Notepad++ is not
that accessible. I looked into emacs and emacspeak, but these seemd to
have
steep learning curves. Not that interested in them.

Suggestions welcome, offline please, at abower@....

Thanks.

-Amy B.

P.S. I'm running on two Windows 7, 64-bit platforms, one has Magic 12,
Jaws
16 and MS Office 12, and the other has Magic 13, Jaws 16 and MS Office
2013.

I had malware on my computer and in the process of restoring Jaws it

FREEDOM SCIENTIFIC said I need to do a repair of Jaws. I could not

time I would be able to call them is Thursday, June 2,5. I'd rather
not wait that long if I can help it. Is any one on this list competent

contact me off list? If it's an easy enough process could you send me
instructions? If not, could you give me your phone number and the

When I need to completely close skype I follow these steps:
1 open select a system tray icon with INSERT F11 and arrow down to skype
2 tab to right single click and hit spacebar
3 arrow down to quit and hit enter
4 you'll be asked if you're sure, tab down to quit and again hit enter

I had the same issue with not being able to close Skype after installing.
I?m
running Windows 8.1 as well, and wonder if we inadvertently installed the
Windows App version of Skype instead of the full desktop version? I?m not
to

clear as to whether or not there are Windows Apps for all programs or
not.
Just a thought. I hardly use Skype, so not sure if it?s working or not?
just

installed the update because a window came up prompting me to update
Skype,

so I did.

I have never been a big fan of Skype, but the new features in
Skype, as advertised in an email message I received having a
subject line similar to the above, made it tempting.

So, I read further. Apparently, the old Skype will no longer be
supported.

Being one always willing to jump for the bleeding edge, I gave it
a try. In fairness, I didn't try to work with it for very long,
but this has to rank right up there with the most inaccessible
products I've seen on the market in the last decade. The thing
brings up a list of options that one can read, but none of them
works. Even worse, Skype hangs around and cannot be removed even
with Alt-F4. I almost entitled this message, "Is Skype really a
virus?" Fortunately, after going to the Control Panel, it was
fairly easy to get rid of the thing. Now, my computer is working
normally, but I really thought I had inadvertently introduced a
virus to my computer (Windows 8.1). I'm using JAWS 16.

So, except for those with some sight (probably quite a bit) and
those with psychological needs to inflict punishment upon
themselves, I would recommend to people that they bypass the
tempting advertisements in the Skype email message that is likely
to appear in your Inbox soon - if it has not appeared already.

It has worked on my last too computers. Some of the women in my card
groups

can't open my attachments. I, being the leader, have to send updates
occasionally, and I patch the whole file into the body of the e-mail -
away

it goes, and they can read them. When we have someone new, the attachment
is

pretty long.

This surprises me. I didn?t know one could paste attachments right into
the body of an email message. Is this something new? This is the way
I?ve

been doing attachments on my Mac for the past 6 years, but never knew it
was possible in Windows and Outlook. Does this only work in outlook
2013?

Thanks,

Re: JAWS Repair David Whitehead 12/23/2013 9:33? xpc

The steps below are the best, most in depth, and most thorough way of
repairing Jaws according to Freedom Scientific Tech Support.
Note; jaws11 is the example, however, this will work for 12 13 14 15.
1. Place a copy of the Jaws executible version that you want to repair
into
the main root of the " C " drive. For example; If you are running Jaws11
most recent you would paste a copy of " J11.0.1430-32bit.exe " into the
main
root of the " C " drive. To open the main root of the " C " drive, go
to
the desktop, press enter on My Computer, press enter on Local disk C, and
now you have the main root of the " C " drive open.
2. With the Jaws " .exe " pasted into the "C" drive, highlight the " .exe
",
and press F2 as if you were going to edit this line of text. now press
control + C to copy this Jaws executible, press escape to close the edit
field, and press Alt + F4 to close the C drive.
What you want to do is place just the title of the Jaws version into the
Windows Run Dialogue box and not the file. If you were to place the Jaws
executable into the Run box without copying as you did as per the
instructions above you would have pasted the whole file into the Run Box
instead of just the title.
3. Now that you have just the title copied to the clipboard, press
Windows
key + R to open the Run Dialogue Box. Type, remember to type a capitalC
,"
C:\ " without the quotes or
spaces and press control + V to paste the Jaws title, press your end key
to
take the cursor to the end of the title and type in the following " /type
repair" without the quotes but, with the spaces . Below is what your
line
of text should look / read like.

C:\J15.0.5056ENU-64bit.exe /type repair

Read character by character to make sure you have put in the proper
spaces,
Forward & back slashes and text. press the home key to go to the front
of
the title and press enter to start the repair.

Hi All,

Just to add my two cents worth, I would not bother with the repair
option,
just do a new installation. My purely anecdotal experience is that the
repair never works, and Freedom Scientific ends up thereafter
recommending
doing a new clean install; this has happened to me probably 5 or 6 times
over the years. Frankly, the new install goes more quickly than the
repair

option, so I wonder why they bother with the repair.

Yes, you can do a "new" install without having to first remove the old
version. If you are able, I recommend first removing the version with
the
bug in it, but sometimes the bug has the side effect of blocking the
uninstall program.

Can you do the reinstall directly over the onboard version? Thanks, Keith

Ryan,

If you have a copy of your current original JAWS executable file, why not
just do an install of that version?

I had malware on my computer and in the process of restoring Jaws it
no longer works right. I can tab from link to link using google chrome
but I cannot read using the arrow keys. On IE 11 I can do neither.
FREEDOM SCIENTIFIC said I need to do a repair of Jaws. I could not
stay and do it, but they said they were willing to assist. The next
time I would be able to call them is Thursday, June 2,5. I'd rather
not wait that long if I can help it. Is any one on this list competent
doing a Jaws repair and could walk me through it? If you are could you
contact me off list? If it's an easy enough process could you send me
instructions? If not, could you give me your phone number and the
times you are available? I'll be around most of today and on Monday,
Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings after 6 P.M. Mountain standard time.
I'd really like to get this fixed. Jaws 14, windows 7. I'm writing
this message on my Pac Mate Omni, which is now the only device I have
that reads web-based text pages. Happy Father's Day tomorrow,

I close Skype from the Task Bar because Alt F4 doesn't work for me
either.
Other then that, however, the program works well for me; I use JAWS 16
and
Windows 8.1. One setting I recommend changing, though, is unchecking the
"Skype Home" option in the view menu. If checked, this setting makes
screen
reader navigation more difficult because parts of the Skype website
appear
in the program.

hit quit, then yes you are sure.

Hi Bill,

Thanks. I mostly use a Mac at home now, and at work we use Groupwise for
email, so I guess I?ve fallen a bit behind with the Outlook world! :) I
really like the method of pasting attachments directly into the body of
an
email, and am glad this is possible in Windows. I?ll have to try it in
Groupwise when I go back to work, which won?t be till the middle of
August!

Thanks again Bill.

Skype does have both a desktop and a metro app, but not all programs have
versions optimized specifically for Windows 8 and above. If this were
the
case, we would be able to run JAWS on Windows RT.

I had the same issue with not being able to close Skype after installing.
I?m running Windows 8.1 as well, and wonder if we inadvertently installed
the Windows App version of Skype instead of the full desktop version? I?m
not to clear as to whether or not there are Windows Apps for all programs
or
not. Just a thought. I hardly use Skype, so not sure if it?s working or
not?
just installed the update because a window came up prompting me to update
Skype, so I did.

I have never been a big fan of Skype, but the new features in Skype,
as advertised in an email message I received having a subject line
similar to the above, made it tempting.

So, I read further. Apparently, the old Skype will no longer be
supported.

Being one always willing to jump for the bleeding edge, I gave it a
try. In fairness, I didn't try to work with it for very long, but
this has to rank right up there with the most inaccessible products
I've seen on the market in the last decade. The thing brings up a
list of options that one can read, but none of them works. Even
worse, Skype hangs around and cannot be removed even with Alt-F4. I
almost entitled this message, "Is Skype really a virus?" Fortunately,
after going to the Control Panel, it was fairly easy to get rid of the
thing. Now, my computer is working normally, but I really thought I
had inadvertently introduced a virus to my computer (Windows 8.1).
I'm using JAWS 16.

So, except for those with some sight (probably quite a bit) and those
with psychological needs to inflict punishment upon themselves, I
would recommend to people that they bypass the tempting advertisements
in the Skype email message that is likely to appear in your Inbox soon
- if it has not appeared already.

Daniel,

I had the same message and i have less problems with skype.
This is why.

I have the latest version of Jaws and a braille display.
If speech does not work, i can compensate with my fingers.
Also i use the scripts, but advertisementscreens are changing in every
update, so it is a little puzzle tofind messageboxes and dialogs.

Greetings from the Netherlands.

Peter.

I had the same issue with not being able to close Skype after
installing.
I?m running Windows 8.1 as well, and wonder if we inadvertently
installed
the Windows App version of Skype instead of the full desktop version?
I?m
not to clear as to whether or not there are Windows Apps for all
programs
or not. Just a thought. I hardly use Skype, so not sure if it?s working
or
not? just installed the update because a window came up prompting me to
update Skype, so I did.

When I went to Netflix today, I was welcomed to a new site. I was placed
in
"application". What does that mean? Seemed to have something to do with
forms mode. One of the headings was new releases. Below that was a browse
link. When I clicked on it I was left in limbo. When I did find a list,
it
was a bunch of numbers. Have not tried app on iPhone yet.

With Kevin's help, I did a little experimenting. When you log onto the
initial page for Netflix, tab and/or arrow down to "search" and hit the
home
button. Then hit the left mouse button and this will take you to the next
page where you will find the edit field to edit the title you seek.

I am a big fan of Star Trek (the original series and Next Generation) and
The Twilight Zone. I managed to navigate to each of these shows in the
above
manner.

Again, thanks to Kevin's earlier post, which wasn't the actual method
used,
but it led the way to my ultimate solution.

I also am having trouble with Netflix. I can no longer access the search
field. I have spoken to both the DVD customer service line and to the
streaming customer service line.

The customer service number is
(877) 742-1480
You will be asked to go online to get a service code to speed things up.
Not
necessary. Just stay on the line and someone will answer.

We all need to call Netflix about this issue.

Hi,

A couple of things that may help. On the profile page use the jaws
cursor
to click on the profile you want. Use insert f7 to use the links list on
the movies page. I agree they messed it up.

Dear Group:

I am new to this JAWS User Group. I am a subscriber to Netflix, who seems
to
want to make it darned difficult for screen readers to navigate.

I am operating with JAWS 14, Windows 7 and Internet Explorer. Netflix
changed things about 4 months ago that made navigation difficult without
a
sighted person to use the mouse. Then, they changed again yesterday and I
cannot navigate their site at all.

Any others out there with this issue?

I think they're trying to make the new site more like an app than a
website.

I hate these kind of sites because they shut your virtual cursor off and
leave you with little to be able to do a lot of the time.

I've noticed that people on this list are also having trouble navigating
the
"new" Netflix site. I was just going on there to "rate" a disk that I
watched, but I can't seem to get to the list of physical media I've put
in
my queue. If anyone knows how to do this without the use of a blasted
mouse, please answer. I'd love to know, but I agree that blind folks in
general should get on the collective backs of customer service and find
out
why this is such a chore, now.

When I rebooted an hour ago, I was notified of a new JAWS release.
Against
my better judgment, I went ahead with the installation. As usual, I was
required to reboot on completion. After about five minutes, I decided
something was wrong because the rebooting process got hung. So I shut
down
the PC and restarted. It took a while, but eventually the PC came back to
life and JAWS reloaded. Ultimately a good result, but the experience
brought
back bad memories of earlier JAWS releases. In the future, I'll make sure
to
have sighted assistance nearby when I install a new JAWS release, just in
case. I wonder if this process went more smoothly for others.

With the latest upgrade, I had no problems what so ever. With the prior
one I never could get it to work even after removing JFW 16 and
reinstalling a fresh.

Hi Adrian, The patch install failed with a notice to run a repair on my
current JAWS 16, the most current build prior to today's notice.
This has not happened to me before so, for now, I will wait for further
developments. Mitch

In that case the best thing to do is to download the full installation
package from the FS website and run it. This often works when the check
for
updates feature doesn't.

Hi Adrian, The patch install failed with a notice to run a repair on my
current JAWS 16, the most current build prior to today's notice.
This has not happened to me before so, for now, I will wait for further
developments. Mitch

Against
my better judgment, I went ahead with the installation. As usual, I was
required to reboot on completion. After about five minutes, I decided
something was wrong because the rebooting process got hung. So I shut
down
the PC and restarted. It took a while, but eventually the PC came back to
life and JAWS reloaded. Ultimately a good result, but the experience
brought

back bad memories of earlier JAWS releases. In the future, I'll make sure

To see if you have the latest update for JAWS 14, open the JAWS help menu
and select "check for updates." This works in all versions of JAWS that
have
come out since the feature was introduced several years ago.

Thanks. I finally went to Mobile, did that. Brad sent links though, which I saved. Anyway, I did put like on their site. I understand that when I get a more updated JAWS that I will be able to navigate better in it - look forward to that. It might be a long six months or so.

Hello Everyone,

Many of you recently inquired on this list about JAWS compatibility with
Windows 10. If you are one of these people, or if you are unsure whether or
not it is a good idea to upgrade because of accessibility concerns, I have
great news. In FSCast episode 109, Glen Gordon assures FS customers that
JAWS and Magic will be ready for Windows 10 when it is released on July 29.
For those who don't know, FSCast is FreedomScientific's monthly podcast.
All FSCast episodes, including episode 109, can be accessed on-line at
www.freedomscientific.com/fscast <http://www.freedomscientific.com/fscast> .
You can also subscribe to the podcast via iTunes.

Best,

Michal

Good news! App for iOS works fine.

In defense of Netflix, they have always fixed problems in the past. I just
wish that they would fix problems before they break them.

I have subscribed to Netflix for many years. There have been several bad
sites. Eventually, they did fix them. So there is hope.

Re: 3 email address's

Michal Nowicki <mnowicki4@...>

Hi Joe,

I've never worked with Windows Live Mail because I have always used either
Outlook or webmail services, but you may still find the below tip helpful.
In Outlook, when you start typing in the "to" field, JAWS will announce the
selected contact as it pops up. Based on your post, this is also the case
in Windows Live Mail. When this happens, try pressing down arrow to
navigate to the e-mail address you wish to insert into your message. For
instance, referring to your example, when you type "Joe" and Joe's first
e-mail address is selected, see if down arrowing will get you to the other
ones. Let us know if this works for you.

Re: Netflix

Nermin

Hi all,

while browsing on something totally unrelated to Netflix, I found the following page which might be helpful to those having issues with Netflix in any way, be it content or accessibility.
https://netflixproject.wordpress.com/
Their page states that they want to help make Netflix accessible to any type of disability.
The accessible Netflix project | Advocates taking steps to ensure Netflix accessibility for everyone
You can contact them via a feedback form, or use the
Contact us▼
netflixacessproject@... e-mail address.

Netflix isn't as popular here in Germany yet, but maybe that'll help someone having accessibility issues.

Regards,
Nermin
