Hi, Tom. Have you checked in your Control Panel where you remove programs to see if the Bing Toolbar is listed in your installed programs?

If it is, I would remove it.

No luck there either.

I'm wondering if my problem still relates to the Bing tool bar.

I thought I had it disabled, according to some instructions I had received, but I think I was wrong because Bing is still mentioned when I access the internet via Internet Explorer and Firefox.

I may try switching to another home page, just to see if that makes a difference.

Hi,

Once you’re in forms mode try tab away from and then back to the edit field… sometimes this will work.

Thanks,

Re: getting Skype off of task bar

Adrian Spratt

Daniel,

It sounds as though your system tray is set to hide some icons. Below are instructions for how to reveal them in Windows 7. I believe they originated with David Bailes, and I added notes from my own experience when I went through the process some years ago.

Open start menu properties with Win key, escape, alt-enter.

In the first dialog, tab to and press the Notification Area Customize button. I found that the list of options appears when I shit-tabbed once.

The first item there is always turn on all icons. I pressed the spacebar on it, then tabbed to Okay.

Earlier today someone posted instructions for getting Skype off of your task
bar completely.

The first instruction was to access Select A System Tray Icon and arrow down
to Skype.

I tried this. After entering Insert F11, I have only 4 choices to arrow to.
They are Get Windows 10, Solve PC Issues, Network 5 Internet Access and
Speakers.

So, will the instructions not work for JAWS 14?

Okay, yet another suggestion. Bill White may have included this with his F5 idea, but if so, I missed it and that message is now deleted. On several websites I use regularly, I need to do the following:

Enter the text field in the way you already do, Tom.

Then refresh the screen with JAWS key+escape.

Type the text, then press the PC cursor to exit forms mode.

not.

I may have to call Freedom Scientific on this one in the morning.

Try unloading/reloading JAWS. sometimes if it has been running a while it
has a brain cramp. Press insert-windows key-f4, and wait about fifteen
seconds. JAWS will shut itself down, clear its head, and restart.

and maybe it won't help at all, but maybe it will.

Good luck!

Here's something that used to work for me when I had JAWS 10.

When you get into forms mode, press Control A to select all. Of course, there isn't a thing to select, but do it anyway. Then press either the backspace or delete key. Again, you're deleting nothing. Then try to type.

Used to work for me back in the day.

Re: Installation of today's new JAWS release

Understood. For the last few new releases, I'd found the automatic updater to work fine. Because of today's experience, I posted in the event others might have a similar problem and so would know to have support on hand in case they, too, had problems with the installation. Half a dozen listers posted they haven't! However, some did.

When I rebooted an hour ago, I was notified of a new JAWS release. Against
my better judgment, I went ahead with the installation. As usual, I was
required to reboot on completion. After about five minutes, I decided
something was wrong because the rebooting process got hung. So I shut down
the PC and restarted. It took a while, but eventually the PC came back to
life and JAWS reloaded. Ultimately a good result, but the experience brought
back bad memories of earlier JAWS releases. In the future, I'll make sure to
have sighted assistance nearby when I install a new JAWS release, just in
case. I wonder if this process went more smoothly for others.

Re: Keeping Up With Technology

Ed Marquette <marquette.ed@...>

Mitchell is right.
I too always upgrade. Sometimes, as in JAWS 13, I upgrade but
never use it. For instance, with JAWS 13, I used version 12 until
version 14 came out. For my dime, I thought JAWS 13 broke more
than it fixed, and sometimes versions of software will do that.
Still, it is such a hassle skipping versions that it makes sense,
at least for me, always to keep up to date.

"Skipping five or so versions" is not cheaper if, all of a sudden,
a new version comes out containing something you really want or
need. It would be cheaper if FS charged a flat upgrade fee, but
that's not the case; the older the version, the greater the cost
of upgrading to the newest release. That is why I always keep my
license up-to-date, even if a particular release does not contain
any new features I feel I'll need.

Subject: Re: Keeping Up With Technology

I can't really fault Freedom Scientific for this. Designers do
crazier and crazier things with software and websites every day,
and the people at FS aren't psychic. It's been this way since
before I got into computers I'm sure, and that was 1992. You can't
redesign software to fix a problem until the problem exists. So
what happens. A new version of Windows comes out, and then JAWS
has to be rewritten to handle the new stuff. A new version of
Office comes out replacing menus with ribbons, and again, the
software has to be rewritten to deal with the new layout. Netflix
changes their website, and again something has to be tweaked to
handle the new wrinkle. If the site designer would use Alt tags on
their graphics, graphical links wouldn't be an issue.

The other side of that coin is that you have to do your part, and
that means updating to the latest version of JAWS if you want the
latest fixes to the latest problems. I don't generally update to
every new release, because for what I do, I can usually skip five
or so versions.
It's cheaper that way, and I don't feel like I'm missing out. If
you're more on the cutting edge of technology, you may have to
update more frequently.

Which brings me to my final point of the night. People gripe about
the cost of assistive technology, but as rapidly as things change,
programmers are always having to work writing code to accommodate
those new features and problems. And unlike, say, Microsoft
Office, which people use by the millions and millions of copies,
assistive technology has an extremely small market share. People
want the very latest and greatest, and they want the software
authors to work for free.

Is what we have perfect? No. But if you were using JAWS back in
the days of Internet Explorer 3.0, you remember when the only way
to read a news article was with the JAWS cursor (there was no
virtual cursor), and you had to read three or four columns of
articles at one time with all the stories mixed together. We've
come soooooo far since 1997 when I started teaching people how to
use the Internet. When you step back eighteen years, it's really
quite amazing how rapidly our technology catches up with the rest
of the world compared to how long it used to take.

No one saw this Netflix change coming; I mean, the site is

I'm sorry, Andre, but this did not work for me either.

Very strange and very frustrating.

This is a problem that I don't recall having, until relatively recently.

Hey Tom,

Starting at the top of the web page. I sometimes just hit the "e" key and
it takes me directly to an edit field. Then arrow up and down to open the
edit box. Repeat e key for multiple edit fields. Might be a long shot but
might work. Good luck.

Bill:

I tried this, but no joy.

I still get the higher click, which indicates to me that I'm in forms mode,
but I still can't enter text into a search or edit box.

Have tried this on google, and on several other search sites.

This is the case whether I tab or arrow down to the forms field.

Hi, Tom. I don't know that this would solve your particular issue, but,
sometimes, refreshing the page with the function key 5, F5, will bring up a
search box where you can enter data.

Hello, everyone.

I'm still having issues typing characters into the edit box when on
the internet with my home Windows 7 PC.

I can arrow down or tab until I hear the forms mode sound, but when I
type, nothing gets entered into the edit box.

I had someone sighted check, and nothing gets entered onto the screen
when
I
do the typing in forms mode, even though the sound indicates I'm in
forms mode.

I find the issue both in Internet Explorer and in Firefox. And, I
have tried performing searches on several different web sites where
info needs to be entered into the search box.

Is there a Jaws or other setting I should check to troubleshoot the issue?

For the record, I'm using Jaws 14 on this particular computer.

Thank you!

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

I can't really fault Freedom Scientific for this. Designers do crazier
and crazier things with software and websites every day, and the people
at FS aren't psychic. It's been this way since before I got into
computers I'm sure, and that was 1992. You can't redesign software to
fix a problem until the problem exists. So what happens. A new version
of Windows comes out, and then JAWS has to be rewritten to handle the
new stuff. A new version of Office comes out replacing menus with
ribbons, and again, the software has to be rewritten to deal with the
new layout. Netflix changes their website, and again something has to be
tweaked to handle the new wrinkle. If the site designer would use Alt
tags on their graphics, graphical links wouldn't be an issue.

The other side of that coin is that you have to do your part, and that
means updating to the latest version of JAWS if you want the latest
fixes to the latest problems. I don't generally update to every new
release, because for what I do, I can usually skip five or so versions.
It's cheaper that way, and I don't feel like I'm missing out. If you're
more on the cutting edge of technology, you may have to update more
frequently.

Which brings me to my final point of the night. People gripe about the
cost of assistive technology, but as rapidly as things change,
programmers are always having to work writing code to accommodate those
new features and problems. And unlike, say, Microsoft Office, which
people use by the millions and millions of copies, assistive technology
has an extremely small market share. People want the very latest and
greatest, and they want the software authors to work for free.

Is what we have perfect? No. But if you were using JAWS back in the days
of Internet Explorer 3.0, you remember when the only way to read a news
article was with the JAWS cursor (there was no virtual cursor), and you
had to read three or four columns of articles at one time with all the
stories mixed together. We've come soooooo far since 1997 when I started
teaching people how to use the Internet. When you step back eighteen
years, it's really quite amazing how rapidly our technology catches up
with the rest of the world compared to how long it used to take.

"Skipping five or so versions" is not cheaper if, all of a sudden, a new
version comes out containing something you really want or need. It would be
cheaper if FS charged a flat upgrade fee, but that's not the case; the older
the version, the greater the cost of upgrading to the newest release. That
is why I always keep my license up-to-date, even if a particular release
does not contain any new features I feel I'll need.

I tried closing, and then reloading Jaws, but again, no luck.

I'm sorry to be such a pain about this, and I want everyone to know your

I also tried another home page to see if anything would work, but apparently
not.

I may have to call Freedom Scientific on this one in the morning.

I am still wondering if my problem has something to do with that darn Bing

I don't have this problem at all on my work laptop which has Windows 7 and

Try unloading/reloading JAWS. sometimes if it has been running a while it

Just my two cents worth. In the 13 years that I have been computer literate,
I do not believe that these constant changes have as much to do with the

profits". The constant changes accomplish little more than earning profits
for the shareholders and owners.

Again, I get the higher click that indicates I'm in forms mode, but no text
gets entered when I type.

Hitting F5 to refresh the screen doesn't help either.

This might sound stupid but for the past year I hit the space bar instead of
the enter key to get forms mode. Good luck!

Hello, everyone.

I'm still having issues typing characters into the edit box when on the
internet with my home Windows 7 PC.

I can arrow down or tab until I hear the forms mode sound, but when I type,
nothing gets entered into the edit box.

I had someone sighted check, and nothing gets entered onto the screen when I
do the typing in forms mode, even though the sound indicates I'm in forms
mode.

I find the issue both in Internet Explorer and in Firefox. And, I have
tried performing searches on several different web sites where info needs to
be entered into the search box.

Is there a Jaws or other setting I should check to troubleshoot the issue?

For the record, I'm using Jaws 14 on this particular computer.

Thank you!

Might be a long shot but
might work. Good luck.

You know, with all the hardships that I read within this EList, especially
regarding Netflix and other such sites-I know I'm having my share of woes
regarding these-I think the fault lay not only with sites like Netflix that
change configurations as often as they change their underwear, but also with
Freedom Scientific for not keeping the programs compatible and current with
a lot of new programs and changing graphics. If screenreaders were able to
recognize changing graphics, I think things would be a lot more accessible.
No one saw this Netflix change coming; I mean, the site is definitely
changed completely to the point where I cannot find my DVD queue; if they
were phasing out the DVD queue, news of this should have been announced to
subscribers long ago, but if this is merely a configuration issue where more
is made of graphics, well, then I guess that, right now, they'll lose a lot
of subscribers who can't figure out the situation, but my hope is that
screenreading software is keeping up with the times, because they're
certainly *NOT* slowing down for us.
