Hey Bill, would Bing show up in the task manager if it were being used on
Tom's machine? I think he is running J14. What about the task bar. Would
this show up as well? If these do appear then listers could better help
with suggestions.

Hey Tom,

Starting at the top of the web page. I sometimes just hit the "e" key and
it takes me directly to an edit field. Then arrow up and down to open the
edit box. Repeat e key for multiple edit fields. Might be a long shot but
might work. Good luck.

I still get the higher click, which indicates to me that I'm in forms mode,
but I still can't enter text into a search or edit box.

Have tried this on google, and on several other search sites.

Hi, Tom. I don't know that this would solve your particular issue, but,
sometimes, refreshing the page with the function key 5, F5, will bring up a
search box where you can enter data.

I'm still having issues typing characters into the edit box when on
the internet with my home Windows 7 PC.



I can arrow down or tab until I hear the forms mode sound, but when I
type, nothing gets entered into the edit box.



I had someone sighted check, and nothing gets entered onto the screen
when
I
do the typing in forms mode, even though the sound indicates I'm in
forms mode.



I find the issue both in Internet Explorer and in Firefox. And, I
have tried performing searches on several different web sites where
info needs to be entered into the search box.





Is there a Jaws or other setting I should check to troubleshoot the issue?



For the record, I'm using Jaws 14 on this particular computer.

have to get paid.

Yes we lag behind. We must all do work arounds until the tech can catch up.
It's the nature of the beast. Greatfully no matter how difficult, at least
there is a beast to work with.

and crazier things with software and websites every day, and the people

It's cheaper that way, and I don't feel like I'm missing out. If you're
more on the cutting edge of technology, you may have to update more
frequently.

Which brings me to my final point of the night. People gripe about the
cost of assistive technology, but as rapidly as things change,
programmers are always having to work writing code to accommodate those
new features and problems. And unlike, say, Microsoft Office, which
people use by the millions and millions of copies, assistive technology
has an extremely small market share. People want the very latest and
greatest, and they want the software authors to work for free.

Is what we have perfect? No. But if you were using JAWS back in the days
of Internet Explorer 3.0, you remember when the only way to read a news
article was with the JAWS cursor (there was no virtual cursor), and you
had to read three or four columns of articles at one time with all the
stories mixed together. We've come soooooo far since 1997 when I started
teaching people how to use the Internet. When you step back eighteen
years, it's really quite amazing how rapidly our technology catches up
with the rest of the world compared to how long it used to take.

"Skipping five or so versions" is not cheaper if, all of a sudden, a new
version comes out containing something you really want or need. It would be
cheaper if FS charged a flat upgrade fee, but that's not the case; the older
the version, the greater the cost of upgrading to the newest release. That
is why I always keep my license up-to-date, even if a particular release
does not contain any new features I feel I'll need.

I tried closing, and then reloading Jaws, but again, no luck.

I'm sorry to be such a pain about this, and I want everyone to know your
suggestions are being tried and taken seriously.

I also tried another home page to see if anything would work, but apparently
not.

I may have to call Freedom Scientific on this one in the morning.

I am still wondering if my problem has something to do with that darn Bing
search tool bar which I thought I had disabled.

I don't have this problem at all on my work laptop which has Windows 7 and
Jaws 16.

Try unloading/reloading JAWS. sometimes if it has been running a while it
has a brain cramp. Press insert-windows key-f4, and wait about fifteen
seconds. JAWS will shut itself down, clear its head, and restart.

Just my two cents worth. In the 13 years that I have been computer literate,
I do not believe that these constant changes have as much to do with the
"cutting edge of technology" as it does with "going over the edge for
profits". The constant changes accomplish little more than earning profits
for the shareholders and owners.

Try unloading/reloading JAWS. sometimes if it has been running a while it has a brain cramp. Press insert-windows key-f4, and wait about fifteen seconds. JAWS will shut itself down, clear its head, and restart.

I'm still having issues typing characters into the edit box when on the
internet with my home Windows 7 PC.



I can arrow down or tab until I hear the forms mode sound, but when I type,
nothing gets entered into the edit box.



I had someone sighted check, and nothing gets entered onto the screen when I
do the typing in forms mode, even though the sound indicates I'm in forms
mode.



I find the issue both in Internet Explorer and in Firefox. And, I have
tried performing searches on several different web sites where info needs to
be entered into the search box.





Is there a Jaws or other setting I should check to troubleshoot the issue?



For the record, I'm using Jaws 14 on this particular computer.

Starting at the top of the web page. I sometimes just hit the "e" key and
it takes me directly to an edit field. Then arrow up and down to open the
edit box. Repeat e key for multiple edit fields. Might be a long shot but

No luck there either.

I'm wondering if my problem still relates to the Bing tool bar.

I thought I had it disabled, according to some instructions I had received, but I think I was wrong because Bing is still mentioned when I access the internet via Internet Explorer and Firefox.

I may try switching to another home page, just to see if that makes a difference.

You know, with all the hardships that I read within this EList, especially
regarding Netflix and other such sites-I know I'm having my share of woes
regarding these-I think the fault lay not only with sites like Netflix that
change configurations as often as they change their underwear, but also with
Freedom Scientific for not keeping the programs compatible and current with
a lot of new programs and changing graphics. If screenreaders were able to
recognize changing graphics, I think things would be a lot more accessible.
No one saw this Netflix change coming; I mean, the site is definitely
changed completely to the point where I cannot find my DVD queue; if they
were phasing out the DVD queue, news of this should have been announced to
subscribers long ago, but if this is merely a configuration issue where more
is made of graphics, well, then I guess that, right now, they'll lose a lot
of subscribers who can't figure out the situation, but my hope is that
screenreading software is keeping up with the times, because they're
certainly *NOT* slowing down for us.

In case anyone is interested, below is what I wrote to Netflix. I am not claiming this as anything more than it is, a quick note of frustration, with some ideas for them. Here is what I wrote:


Dear Netflix,


I am blind, and use a Windows 7 laptop. Up until a week or so ago, your web site was extremely hard to navigate, but at least I could start a video. Now, after your web page design changes implemented a few days ago, I cannot even start a video.

I am using the latest update of JAWS version 16; JAWS is the world’s most widely used screen reading software for the blind. I tried accessing your service with IE, Firefox, and Chrome, but could not get a video to start. With IE, I cannot even activate my profile.

I am a reasonably experienced Internet user, and if there is a way to navigate your site with a screen reader, I have not figured it out. I am using the recommended common settings for JAWS, and I have no problems with some other video streaming services.

Back a few weeks ago, Netflix announced the addition of audio description. That is a great move, and I applaud you for that. However, in a very ironic twist, it is not possible for a blind person to select the audio described version, even though one is on the part of your site that contains only audio described programs. Why add that extra step? If one is on the audio description page, the user obviously wants the audio described version, so why not make that the default?

In general, there seems to be a huge gap between your marketing department and the technology group. Netflix marketing is advertising this new and wonderful audio description service, but a blind person simply cannot navigate the site, especially after the rollout of your new web page design.

In closing, I am using a Windows laptop, and I do not have a smart phone. The issues I am asking you to please fix are just for us old-fashioned blind folks using a Windows computer.

I know from experience that screen reader accessibility is a very narrow specialty and skill set, so if you do not have such an expert on staff, you could either hire one or contract with one of the accessibility consultant experts that will help you become and stay accessible.

I am happy to volunteer by helping you test any changes; I have done that in the past for a number of web service companies. Please advise, and much thanks.

I can't really fault Freedom Scientific for this. Designers do crazier and crazier things with software and websites every day, and the people at FS aren't psychic. It's been this way since before I got into computers I'm sure, and that was 1992. You can't redesign software to fix a problem until the problem exists. So what happens. A new version of Windows comes out, and then JAWS has to be rewritten to handle the new stuff. A new version of Office comes out replacing menus with ribbons, and again, the software has to be rewritten to deal with the new layout. Netflix changes their website, and again something has to be tweaked to handle the new wrinkle. If the site designer would use Alt tags on their graphics, graphical links wouldn't be an issue.

The other side of that coin is that you have to do your part, and that means updating to the latest version of JAWS if you want the latest fixes to the latest problems. I don't generally update to every new release, because for what I do, I can usually skip five or so versions. It's cheaper that way, and I don't feel like I'm missing out. If you're more on the cutting edge of technology, you may have to update more frequently.

Which brings me to my final point of the night. People gripe about the cost of assistive technology, but as rapidly as things change, programmers are always having to work writing code to accommodate those new features and problems. And unlike, say, Microsoft Office, which people use by the millions and millions of copies, assistive technology has an extremely small market share. People want the very latest and greatest, and they want the software authors to work for free.

Is what we have perfect? No. But if you were using JAWS back in the days of Internet Explorer 3.0, you remember when the only way to read a news article was with the JAWS cursor (there was no virtual cursor), and you had to read three or four columns of articles at one time with all the stories mixed together. We've come soooooo far since 1997 when I started teaching people how to use the Internet. When you step back eighteen years, it's really quite amazing how rapidly our technology catches up with the rest of the world compared to how long it used to take.

I'm still having issues typing characters into the edit box when on the
internet with my home Windows 7 PC.



I can arrow down or tab until I hear the forms mode sound, but when I type,
nothing gets entered into the edit box.



I had someone sighted check, and nothing gets entered onto the screen when I
do the typing in forms mode, even though the sound indicates I'm in forms
mode.



I find the issue both in Internet Explorer and in Firefox. And, I have
tried performing searches on several different web sites where info needs to
be entered into the search box.





Is there a Jaws or other setting I should check to troubleshoot the issue?



For the record, I'm using Jaws 14 on this particular computer.

I downloaded from the link and received two files. One plainly executable
.exe and the other some kind of executable .exe.part file.

I executed the .exe file and it appears to have updated properly. My
question is what is the .exe.part file and do I need to run it? If so do

.Addressed an issue reported by the Veterans Administration with JAWS
becoming unresponsive and restarting while attempting to read certain
messages.
.When selecting a profile, a customer reported JAWS double speaking the
profile name. This has been fixed.
.When entering email recipients and you are connected to an Exchange
server,

JAWS now automatically reads the information bar that is displayed if a
recipient is out of the office or they have configured an automatic reply.
This was requested by the CNIB in Canada.
.Addressed a reported issue with reading all-day appointments in Outlook
2013.
.Resolved an issue where the currently selected item in the message list
was

not being spoken after closing a message or dialog box.
.Addressed an issue with braille not working as expected after moving a
message to another folder.
.Addressed a customer reported issue where the correct window title was
not
being read after switching to another folder.

Microsoft Word
.Resolved an issue with reading certain text boxes navigated to using the
Inline Objects dialog box (CTRL+SHIFT+O).
.As requested by a customer, pressing CTRL+ALT+NUM PAD 5 in a table now
only

reads the current cell if no column or row titles have been defined.
.JAWS now announces and shows in braille the current state of the
Hide/Browse button in the Save As dialog box.
.Addressed a situation reported by a customer where speech and braille
were
lost when attempting to create a bulleted list in Word 2010.
.In Word 2010, resolved a reported issue where JAWS focus was not
returning
to the document after selecting a word from the Synonyms menu.
.A customer reported that the commands to read the previous or next
sentence

(ALT+UP ARROW and ALT+DOWN ARROW) were not working as expected when
focused
on the first or last paragraph in a document. This is now fixed.
.After selecting an item from a combo box or toggling the state of a check
box in a form in Word 2013, addressed an issue where JAWS was repeating
the
control info multiple times when focus returned to the document.

Mozilla Firefox
.Resolved an issue where the page title was not always being spoken
correctly on dynamic web pages.
.To help eliminate any possible confusion, long labels on radio buttons,
check boxes, and buttons that exceed the specified line length for the
Virtual Cursor will no longer wrap to multiple lines.
.Resolved an issue with Forms Mode not working as expected after using the
ALT+DOWN ARROW keystroke to open a combo box.
.JAWS now speaks the selected text when you attempt to select the contents
of a table cell in some web-based editors.
.When using the Select a Form Field dialog box (INSERT+F5) to move to a
specific form field, resolved an issue where JAWS was not automatically
reading the field prompt when focus moved to it.
.Improved JAWS performance with ARIA slider controls so the correct
left/right orientation is indicated.

Mozilla Thunderbird
.Improved JAWS performance when navigating large messages. In addition,
JAWS

no longer reads the selected item twice after deleting a message.

Enhancements in JAWS 16.0.2342 (May 2015)

As a result of our automatic error reporting feature pointing out an
issue,
we were able to post this intermediate update to improve stability.
