Yes, if you close the message first.

Can you just depress the Delete sign on the computer? I've never used Control D or Alt D for deleting, keep that in mind for spare hot key, if I need one.

Hi all,

I am having trouble with Outlook 2013 and Jaws 16. Here's what I do...

1. Read an email message.
2. Press CTRL + D to delete the message.
3. At this point, Jaws loses focus, and reads nothing. If I alt tab away
and
then back to Outlook, I am placed in the next email message and am able to
read the message, although I am usually placed at the bottom of the
message.
I can also press the alt key to bring up the ribbon, and then press the
alt
key again and this places me in the email message.

Is there some setting I need to change to fix this?

Thanks,

Russell

quite straightforward once you get the hang of how it works.

Ted,

You do not need to change any Word settings. Instead, just follow the below
instructions very carefully, as the process of returning to where you left
off is a bit tricky. There are two ways to access the feature to which I'm
referring, and I strongly recommend the second method.
Method 1. When you open a Word document you previously accessed, JAWS will
announce the "resume reading" pane with focus on the "resume reading"
button. Unfortunately, the resume reading pane does not linger, so if you
don't press the spacebar quickly, this method won't work.
Method 2. When you reopen a Word document, wait for the "resume reading"
pane to appear and disappear. Then press F6 until you land on the "resume
reading" pane, and activate the "resume reading" button by pressing
spacebar. This should place you where you were when you last closed the
document.

Unfortunately, the "resume reading" feature has three key limitations:
1. It works only in Word 2013, not in earlier versions.
2. It works only in files that have been created in Word 2013. Therefore,
if you want to use it in a file that was created in Word 2010 or earlier,
you are out of luck, unless, perhaps, you select the entire document, copy
and paste it into a blank Word 2013 file, and save it under a different
name.
3. If you open a document and press any navigation keystroke (e.g. attempt
to move by character, word, or line), the feature will no longer work
because the second the cursor moves, Word forgets your previous location.

I hope this helps.

With so much good Internet advice flying around on this list lately,
I thought I would raise a question that has been bugging me.

I use PlaceMarkers frequently, especially with Web applications that
I use all the time, including a document management Web App that I
access (keep loaded all the time) daily.

I'm wondering if there is a strategy to ensure that PlaceMarkers
always work. Frankly, the PlaceMarkers I have set tend to remain,
but the k key, which is supposed serially to jump from placeMarker to
PlaceMarker often skips PlaceMarkers that I know are there.
Sometimes, after JAWS has skipped over a PlaceMarker I can hit shift
K to go backwards, and sometimes JAWS will find the shy PlaceMarker.
Sometimes it does not.

Years ago, I had the same problem with WindowEyes, and have been
assuming that PlaceMarkers are just flakey and not terribly reliable
because of the peculiarities of the Net.

No one has told me that, and it occurred to me that I perhaps am
doing something wrong.

Here is what I do:

1. Press Control plus windows plus K

2. Choose Add PlaceMarker

3. accept the default name, link to text, use the default text (if I
know it is going to be constant), and choose domain only if I know
the element will always be on screen within the application.

Linking to text seems like it ought to increase the reliability of
the PlaceMarker, but I do not think that is true. Is it possible
that the opposite is true?

I think I'm making the right choice in indicating when it should be
linked to the domain instead of the specific page, but perhaps my
thinking is backwards.

If everyone else has the same reliability issues, then I'll continue
with my thought that PlaceMarkers are just flakey.

Someone on this list gave me this solution last week and it's perfect! Go
to your documents, pictures or whatever, copy the desired link to clipboard
and paste it in the body of the message. You will get an attachment alert

Okay, mark up one more tip, thanks. The document I had in mind doesn't need much editing. It's an old Cabinet document that started out as a rather messy PDF, and I thought a Word doc would be easier. It may even look better, if I decide to save it back to PDF.

Ted,

You do not need to change any Word settings. Instead, just follow the below instructions very carefully, as the process of returning to where you left off is a bit tricky. There are two ways to access the feature to which I'm referring, and I strongly recommend the second method.
Method 1. When you open a Word document you previously accessed, JAWS will announce the "resume reading" pane with focus on the "resume reading"
button. Unfortunately, the resume reading pane does not linger, so if you don't press the spacebar quickly, this method won't work.
Method 2. When you reopen a Word document, wait for the "resume reading"
pane to appear and disappear. Then press F6 until you land on the "resume reading" pane, and activate the "resume reading" button by pressing spacebar. This should place you where you were when you last closed the document.

Unfortunately, the "resume reading" feature has three key limitations:
1. It works only in Word 2013, not in earlier versions.
2. It works only in files that have been created in Word 2013. Therefore, if you want to use it in a file that was created in Word 2010 or earlier, you are out of luck, unless, perhaps, you select the entire document, copy and paste it into a blank Word 2013 file, and save it under a different name.
3. If you open a document and press any navigation keystroke (e.g. attempt to move by character, word, or line), the feature will no longer work because the second the cursor moves, Word forgets your previous location.

I hope this helps.

Michal

The F6 works great. Tried it last night; that's more like it.

I do the Astirix things, as does my sighted husband - it works, not complicated.

When I close a document I plan to return to, I just place a double
asterisk at the point where I stopped reading or editing. If I'm concerned
about causing accidental format changes, I don't put this marker at the
beginning of a paragraph, but after the first word of a paragraph. Not
elegant or high tech, but simple.

Man, that's obscure. Thanks a lot. I'll try it.

Ted,

You do not need to change any Word settings. Instead, just follow the
below instructions very carefully, as the process of returning to where
you left off is a bit tricky. There are two ways to access the feature to
which I'm referring, and I strongly recommend the second method.
Method 1. When you open a Word document you previously accessed, JAWS
will announce the "resume reading" pane with focus on the "resume reading"

Therefore, if you want to use it in a file that was created in Word 2010
or earlier, you are out of luck, unless, perhaps, you select the entire
document, copy and paste it into a blank Word 2013 file, and save it under
a different name.
3. If you open a document and press any navigation keystroke (e.g.
attempt to move by character, word, or line), the feature will no longer
work because the second the cursor moves, Word forgets your previous
location.

I hope this helps.

Michal

As I recall, the training material said something about it early on, and I
thought, "That's for me." I have never understood why Word can't do what
WordPerfect and DisplayWrite could do decades ago, and what Excel can also
do--bring you in where you left off without fuss and bother!

I had no idea placemarkers would work in Word. This is awesome!

According to Surf's Up,Control-windows-k creates a temporary placemarker.

not sure of which version of jaws your using, but, the keystroke for

announce the various place markers.
