Re: thoughts on latest jaws update

Melissa STOTT <mstott69@...>

So far, I have had no issues with the latest update. I am using windows 7. When Jaws 16 was first released, it would freeze up on me, but it hasn't done that in a while. The only problem I can see right now, is that the MLB scores in research it is still broken.

Hi,

I have not had that happen as of yet. However, I have been required quite
often to hit insert escape in order to refresh the screen on web sites such
as Amazon because buttons or other options are not showing themselves. In
fact last night I spent more than fifteen minutes in my checkout procedure
trying to switch from my default credit card to a different debit card on
amazon. The Change option would not show itself no way no how. Finally after
a great deal of frustration the insert escape made the change option
available and I was able to choose another card and finish checking out.
What should have taken two minutes took almost twenty. This is nothing new
with Jaws and amazon. And I don't know if it is a Jaws thing, an amazon
thing, a coding thing, or what.

Because it occurs even if Magic is running.

AFB Accessible free Vidio Player

David Moore

Download the AFB Accessible Player: The American Foundation for the
Blind's Accessible HTML5 Video Player (Beta)

Developed by AFB, this fully accessible, embedded video player with
HTML5 controls includes the following features:
Users can select the size and color scheme they prefer.
Controls are labeled with text and include keyboard commands, so they
work with any kind of assistive technology, and can also be used with
a mouse.
Video can also be expanded to a full screen, which is helpful for
users with low vision.
Can be used as an embedded YouTube player or as a standard player.
Custom control layout supports English and Spanish languages.

The player is available now, if you'd like to use it on your own site.
Here's a downloadable zip file containing the AFB Accessible Player
files and instructions. We'd love to have your feedback on the AFB
Accessible Player via this quick form.
Quick Keys:
Play/Pause (ALT-SHIFT-P)
Stop (ALT-SHIFT-X)
Forward 10% (ALT-SHIFT-W)
Back 10% (ALT-SHIFT-Q)
Full Screen (ALT-SHIFT-F-ENTER)
Transcript of Video

Voice Over: Crista Earl, Director, AFB Web Services, describes the AFB
Accessible Player.

Crista Earl: One of the problems with video in general on the internet
is players are not all accessible and people have trouble getting to
the controls with the keyboard on some of them. Some of them, if you
have low vision you can't tell what's what. They're just little gray
patches. All kinds of issues with the player.

So, we created an accessible player using HTML5 technology so that it
would work with a lot of platforms, works with lots of browsers and
cross-platform whether you are using a Mac or a PC, whether you're
using a mobile device. And, it has this great change colors so if your
website has a color scheme, a high contrast color scheme or various
high contrast color schemes, the player will change with your website.
So, users with low vision can make the controls more visible and users
who use screen readers can find the controls easily.

We added keyboard shortcuts so in the middle of the video if you want
to pause it, you can just hit the key command. It varies slightly from
browser to browser to pause the video. You can make it full-screen or
make it small on the page. the user has that option. So, we really
think we put in a lot of nice features to make playing videos easy,
fun, and took all the hassle away from the user. And, a lot of hassle
away from the web designer, too. You don't have to build your own
player. Now, your job is to make accessible content and put it in the
player.

Voice Over: What are the current and future plans for the AFB Accessible Player?

So, of course we're using it on our site. We started rolling it out on
new videos. So, anytime we are putting up something new we use the new
player. But also, we are making available for download. You can get it
from AFB.org. Actually, if you go to afb.org/player,
there's a page that describes it, you can get instructions, and
download the player to put on your website.

The other day, I got that 40-minute mode, so just shut down, started again -
voila, all back to normal JAWS configuration. My husband and I have no clue
what caused that.

Hi all,

Earlier today I checks to see if I had missed any updates on my PC, I
found one Microsoft security update and one Graphic update, so I
downloaded and installed them,. Upon rebooting the PC I found Jaws in 40
minute mode. I have a copy of the authorisation code and I was just about
to enter the code when i realised the code was already there with the last
3 digits as stars. I entered them anyway, and all was well, however The
Jaws icon now shows as"Jaws Home use".

Oh well That solved the mystery, at least I didn't have to use up my
last
authorisation key!

Unfortunately, it is often difficult to resolve these types of problems
because they don't come up on all machines and thus may be difficult to
reproduce. Another thing to always keep in mind is that something else
could be causing these problems, such as application-specific settings,
antivirus/antispyware software, other programs, plugins, add-ons, toolbars,
and extensions that somehow interfere with JAWS and/or Thunderbird, or even
malware.

Unfortunately, the release notes for this update are very generic;
all FS says is that it corrects an issue that had been made known to
the company through automatic error reporting. While this suggests
that the update is minor, the timing of its release is quite
thought-provoking, as it hasn't been too long since the previous
update came out. Besides, why would FS release an update that
addresses only one issue? To my knowledge, this has never happened
before.

If you phone Freedom Scientific, they will provide to you your authorization

number. That is what I did. When I got a lap top. Then I stored it on a
thumb drive. For use if I should I need it.

FS distributed an authorization disc with an earlier version of JAWS. I
wonder if they'd be willing to send them on request. The disc's sleeve had
a braille label with my authorization code on it.

Barbara,

I think Mike is correct. It will not be in the JAWS/Help/About dialog,
which
is what I think you're describing. It will be in the dialog during the
authorization process. You can start this from JAWS/Help/Update
Authorization and moving through a couple dialogs.

I just checked, the JAWS authorization key number is not displayed. There
is the serial number and then there is a locking code, which is the code
you
are given once you enter the authorization number as you install JAWS.

You can retrieve the Authorization code, if you go through the
authorization
process. That is, if you have already authorized JAWS. Normally, the
code
will display. If it were me, I would copy and paste it from there, and
save
it somewhere.

Thank you for asking. My husband has 8.1, which, as I understand, is very
good. But I remember when Windows 8 came out, people were in a bit of an
uproar about it. As for me, I am crippling along with XP until JAWS 17 comes

out. When that happens, I want to gather all the information I can about
what works best with it, for instance a scanner for my printer, and I intend

to get Windows 10. So if anyone has advice about a scanner, I really need to

know, since I am completely ignorant about scanners. I thought about getting

8.1, but a couple of people advised me that since this is so close, there
was no point in learning two different systems - just wait and learn one. So

right now, that is my plan.

I know that I'll need everything for 64 bits then, and I don't know if some
of the records I have will transfer, but, as Rick says, "Tomorrow is another

day, another way..."

GIFT (God is forever true),

Carolyn

I haven't had any problems with the new update. However, I have had
problems in the earlier updates when Jaws16 was first released. Jaws no
longer freezes up on me.

Um, I don't find much comfort in this new update. I'm back to 15, as my

have found 16 to be most unstable.

Hello.

I suspect the problem that they corrected was the problem where JAWS for
Windows was restarting over three times a day. At least I have not seen
this on my machine. Since the latest update, and I was seeing it very
frequently before the update.

I just checked, the JAWS authorization key number is not displayed. There
is the serial number and then there is a locking code, which is the code you

I also like Windows 8.1 and have found it to be very good. The gripe is that

people don't like the metro things if they don't want them, and want the
ability to have only what they want. Something like that. But
performance-wise, I like it. I won't be jumping too quickly to Windows 10,
and will wait until Jaws support is good and FS and MS get their bugs worked

out well on that new venture.

Hello list members:

A recent post regarding the AVG Anti-virus software brought to mind a
comment from one of the Freedom Scientific JAWS Tech support team that there
have been some issues with Kaspersky and JAWS.

Until this past Monday when I purchased JFW 16, I have been using Kaspersky
with JAWS 12, with no compatibility issues.

Any perspective would be appreciated.

Hello.

The question you should be asking is how well does office 2013. Worked with
jaws 13 and also keep in mind that office 16 will probably be the office 365
version before the end of the year. I also do not know if you will be
forced to upgrade to office 2016, at some point after it comes out. Since
you subscribe to office 365.

I hope this helps.

Well. I goofed and forgot to provide the link to the page that causes
problems with Jaws. Also, I only had the problem in FireFox. . No
problem with Jaws and this page with internet Explorer.

I just installed 2 optional Windows 7 updates. One concerns information
from one window showing up in another Window. Does that sound like it
might effect Jaws?
The other was my video driver. Both updates could effect Jaws so I
tried this page again and got the same results.
Step 1: Go to the following page with FireFox.
http://rsload.net/soft/document/15226-jarte.html

2: Do a Jaws search for the word bug.

3: Repeat the search after the first occurrence of the word is found.

4: Jaws stops responding after 2 or 3 searches for the next instance
with jawskey+f3.
Jaws speech history follows:
JAWS Find dialog
Find what: edit combo
bug
Alt+w
Bug Fixes: clickable
A bug in the WordPad word processing engine for Windows 7 and below
could cause bad behavior in documents where a hyperlink appeared at the
very beginning
clickable
Bug Fixes: clickable

Jaws gets stuck at this point or at the next instance .

5: Sometimes Jaws does not automatically recover.

6: Sometimes Jaws won't restart with jawskey+windows+f4.

7: One time, Jaws was removed from the tab order of running
applications. I could tell by loading another screen reader.

8: Jaws would not start again in one session after unloading NVDA, (the
other screen reader).
JAWS Version 16.0.2342, Windows 7 pro 64, FireFox 37.0.2
update 38.0.1 just now.

BTW: Jaws still does not read the read only edit boxes in the Firefox
about dialog, even after I made the mods to the settings file suggested
by other listers. Lots of other Mozilla dialogs are not read properly
with Jaws. All these updates and no change.

Given that everything oracle related is java based I would suspect
that it is fairly spotty, but it has been far longer than since I have
gone blind that I have done anything with Oracle products so can't
really say from personal experience. Even when I could see I was not
nearly as impressed with the Oracle management tools as the equivalent
from MS.

I do know that oracle has a command line tool similar to MS' sqlcmd
and I would expect that to work fine with jaws.

Sad to say, that in my past work experience with Oracle 11 it was a very
difficult interface. the only way I was able to use it was if there was an
html-based front-end overlay to the database structure. In other words, the
actual Oracle interface was very unfriendly, in spite of all the Java
plug-ins and access bridge. I usually tried to avoid using it whenever
possible.

Dave, I wanted to ask that when you had the HTML overlay to work with, did
you find Oracle to be friendly with JAWS in that cenario? I ask this
because I may have a situation where some of my clients have to use an
application like this. Oracle data base, but with an HTML front end
overlay. I'm thinking that this should work with JAWS, provided the
developers code it correctly. I'm concerned that we may have to do some
scripting to make some of the elements work though. Thoughts?

Unless it's different than with JAWS 13 and the other versions I've had,
for
a permanent change to your screen echo, go to Insert V for JAWS
Verbosity.
You'll have to arrow through a lot of other options, but when you find
it,
there will be four choices - character; word; character and word; and no
echo. While in a document, hit Insert 2 on the number keys above qwerty.
It
will give you the same choices.

Hello.

The question you should be asking is how well does office 2013. Worked with
jaws 13 and also keep in mind that office 16 will probably be the office 365
version before the end of the year. I also do not know if you will be
forced to upgrade to office 2016, at some point after it comes out. Since

I have experienced that several times. I go to the Jaws I want, shut down
the demo version with alt F4, and then press enter.

Kevin:

I am currently using Office 365 on my work laptop at the University where I
teach. The computer is a Windows 7 64-bit machine.

I have found Outlook e-mail to work quite well, and to be completely
accessible with Jaws, at least with regard to the e-mail functions I use
daily.

I have not done much at all with the calendaring and other features, so
can't comment on their accessibility.

particular email in Windows Llive Mail in Windows8.1. I have tried the short
cut keys control and the letter F with no success. If anyone maybe knows the
short cut key combo I can use to forward an email in Windows Live Mail in
Windows 8.1, your wonderful very helpful info would be so very much
appreciated. Much, much thanks in advance for any help I can maybe get with
this.

Hi Kevin,
I have office 365 and I'm running JAWS16. So far I've only been using

use the storage that comes with the subscription too.

Hello.

The downloadable office suite of word, excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook works
very well with JAWS for Windows version 14, 15 and 16. The storage works
very well as well. I have not tested the online version of the programs. I
have also not tested with JAWS for Windows version 13.

If you haven't already, you should submit this issue to FS, especially
since you can repeat the problem.

Jaws speech history follows:

If you are using a USB device for listening, unplug it; press
escape; and plug in again.
Works on laptops with a USP headset or usb audio card.

Hi
I really need some help. Jaws sometimes becomes very muffled to
the extent I can not hear it. It is in both Jas 14 and 15. If I
switch to Winamp, It plays properly. Does anyone have a clue what
the problem might be? Thank you for your help.

5: Sometimes Jaws does not automatically recover.

6: Sometimes Jaws won't restart with jawskey+windows+f4.

7: One time, Jaws was removed from the tab order of running
applications. I could tell by loading another screen reader.

8: Jaws would not start again in one session after unloading NVDA, (the
other screen reader).
JAWS Version 16.0.2342, Windows 7 pro 64, FireFox 37.0.2
update 38.0.1 just now.

BTW: Jaws still does not read the read only edit boxes in the Firefox

with Jaws. All these updates and no change.

I often press alt tab several times to insure I have closed all of my

Hello, everyone.

This quiry relates to the recent thread on reading web addresses, but I
think my issue is different than what has been encountered thus far.

Basically, my problem is this:

When I am on a particular web site, I can initially access the URL web
address using either alt D or f6, but as soon as I start working with my
arrow keys to make sure I have focus on the address, or to actually copy the
address onto my clipboard, the address literally disappears.

At first, I thought this was a Jaws issue, in that the address is still on
the screen and simply is not being recognized by Jaws. However, I had my
sighted wife check, and she said that the address disappears from the screen
as well whenever I start working with my arrow keys.

I can gget a listing of other web addresses on the screen, but the one I
originally wanted seems to be gone.

Has anyone encountered this issue, and if so, how did you work around it?

I have found the problem with both Internet Explorer and Firefox.

I'm using Jaws 16 with Windows 7, IE 9, and Firefox 38 on this particular
computer.

Yes, that would be great if you could understand what the voice was saying. To me, all I need is to hear, “Comment” and then I know that the text being read is a comment. When the voice changes to Rocko, it speeds up and I cannot understand what it says.

Thanks,

You should know that turning on the quick access keys with JAWS key plus
z
is pretty much useless in large documents. So, don't rely on that.
Also, don't rely on JAWS to give you the colors of the added and deleted
text. In the end, that's not all that important because the colors
depend
on everyone's computer. So a deletion that is in red on your computer
may
be green on someone else's computer.
In the verbosity settings, turning on "count" is crucial. That way
you'll
know if there has been a change in a line if you are reading by line.
This
is not too reliable if you are jumping by paragraph. JAWS won't always
tell
you when an entire paragraph has been deleted if you are jumping through
a
document with control plus down arrow.
Paul is also right about sighted users having some of the same problems,
especially in identifying who made what changes. JAWS will actually
announce the names. Sighted users have to jump through way more hoops to
figure out who made what change -- particularly when there have been 4 or
5
people editing a document.
Good luck.
Ps
As frustrating as JAWS is on track changes, the other screen readers
either
don't attempt to follow track changes or do so crudely.

Re: How can I find Add/Remove Programs in the Windows 7 Control Panel?

Adrian Spratt

It was a reasonable question. With XP, users had to go to the control panel for add/remove. Setting aside Vista, which I spared myself, Win7's search field enables users to get inside areas without going through an entire hierarchy. Add/remove is a perfect example. From a recent thread, HJ Pad is another, since it's a tiny application inside JAWS. In this way, Win7's search field is a boon.

Re: How can I find Add/Remove Programs in the Windows 7 Control Panel?

Brad Martin

Technically, Add/Remove Programs is now called Programs & Features. This change first occurred in the incredibly annoying Windows Vista, which is when my friends and I started referring to it as Glitches and Bugs.

Keep in mind that when you open Programs & Features, there's a bit of a delay while the list is populating, especially on an older or slower computer. So sometimes allowing a few seconds before trying to arrow through the list is advisable.

Having said that, searching for Add or Remove Programs will yield the same Programs & Features Control Panel. Just know that it's not called that any more.

Re: Problem highlighting and copying web addresses

Brad Martin

Tom,

This behavior actually makes sense if you understand what's visually happening. Let me help.

1. When you press control L, Alt D, or F6, your cursor moves to the address bar, and the address is highlighted. So pressing Control C will copy that which is highlighted, in this case the address in question.

2. If you press the up or down arrow, you instead trigger a listing of recently visited addresses to start appearing, and at that point, you're selecting different addresses from your past history to replace the current address. That's why your current address disappears and is replaced by one of the others.

So when you thought you were double checking things, you were actually asking to change the current address to another recently visited website from your recent past history.

Does that clarify things?

Tom,

Yes, alt-d takes you to the page's address. However, don't use your arrow
keys. To copy it, the very next command after alt-d must be control-c. Think
of it this way. Alt-d brings the address into focus, so it's sitting there
ready to be copied.

Re: Problem highlighting and copying web addresses

Tom Behler

Ok, Adrian.

This must be my mistake then, because as soon as I started using my arrow
keys to double-check things, the URL address went away.

It doesn't seem to me like this should happen, but at least now I know how
to work around the issue.

Thanks very much.

Tom,

Yes, alt-d takes you to the page's address. However, don't use your arrow
keys. To copy it, the very next command after alt-d must be control-c. Think
of it this way. Alt-d brings the address into focus, so it's sitting there
ready to be copied.

I'm using Jaws 16 with Windows 7, IE 9, and Firefox 38 on this particular
computer.

If I want to get the web address to put into another email I use cntrl d and
the address that is right there is the current address. I cntrl c to copy
it. I guess you could paste it anywhere you like at that point. If I don't
want to leave the current address I hit enter and I am right back on the

Re: thoughts on latest jaws update

Merv Keck <blind5sparrow@...>

Merv

thoughts on latest jaws update

Kimsan <kimsansong@...>

When I'm reading content on the web, I often find myself needing to do a
screen refresh by pressing insert plus escape.

I'll read a line of text or two, and then jaws will say blank blank blank;
however, when performing the insert escape keystroke, it then picks up where
I left off when I continue to read.

Is this happening to anyone, or am I simply different.

Thank you.

Unfortunately, it is often difficult to resolve these types of problems
because they don't come up on all machines and thus may be difficult to
reproduce. Another thing to always keep in mind is that something else
could be causing these problems, such as application-specific settings,
antivirus/antispyware software, other programs, plugins, add-ons, toolbars,
and extensions that somehow interfere with JAWS and/or Thunderbird, or even
malware.

Unfortunately, the release notes for this update are very generic;
all FS says is that it corrects an issue that had been made known to
the company through automatic error reporting. While this suggests
that the update is minor, the timing of its release is quite
thought-provoking, as it hasn't been too long since the previous
update came out. Besides, why would FS release an update that
addresses only one issue? To my knowledge, this has never happened

Jaws no
longer freezes up on me.

have found 16 to be most unstable.

Hello.

I suspect the problem that they corrected was the problem where JAWS for
Windows was restarting over three times a day. At least I have not seen
this on my machine. Since the latest update, and I was seeing it very
frequently before the update.

Unfortunately, the release notes for this update are very generic; all
FS says is that it corrects an issue that had been made known to the
company through automatic error reporting. While this suggests that the
update is minor, the timing of its release is quite thought-provoking,
as it hasn't been too long since the previous update came out. Besides,
why would FS release an update that addresses only one issue? To my
knowledge, this has never happened before.

Dear list members,
Can anybody assist me with the inquiry I received about the compatibility of

Probably I should be more specific, as I suppose that just by mentioning
Oracle is too ambiguous. With your input, I can then better approach the
user?s question.
Thanks very much in advance for your help.

Greetings All!

First, I apologize if what I'm about to say has already been said. I am
way behind on my E-Mails. For me, several problems were fixed between the
April update, and the May update. I am now able to load JAWS at Windows
start-up again! I have braille display support back! User Account Control
Support works better as well! I don't know why this would be...

Have a great weekend!

Unfortunately, the release notes for this update are very generic; all FS
says is that it corrects an issue that had been made known to the company
through automatic error reporting. While this suggests that the update is
minor, the timing of its release is quite thought-provoking, as it hasn't
been too long since the previous update came out. Besides, why would FS
release an update that addresses only one issue? To my knowledge, this has
never happened before.

Best, Justin

Lots of other Mozilla dialogs are not read properly
with Jaws. All these updates and no change.

using Jarte that the programmer can't reproduce.

Thoughts?

Hi Carolyn
Thanks ,I thought I suppose to it from Jaws window because FS technical
support man told me to press insert +j to jaws window and I can't remember
others step where he told me to press spacebar to check the box last week
ago when I got computer back after having window7 install !! So I had to
download jaws update on wednesday morning while I had fs technical support
man on the phone after the download finish the man told me to press enter
on restart the computer then jaws never came back on so he can continue
help me finish to show me how to get type character echo in
internet,e-mail and etc !! So we waited for 10 minute to see if jaws will
come on so I call my mom to ask her if she see anything on the window
screen she told me it's say start window so therefore that's mean the
programs starter I think ,but it will not open jaws and others program so
I will have to call the computer man to straight the problem out ,computer
man came monday to fix start window he told me the computer is updating
the programs and etc. Well he have to take window7 to his shop this
morning so I'm using window xp while he is repairing the computer and it's
on warranty!!

I have experienced that several times. I go to the Jaws I want, shut down

Hello,

I am using Jaws 15 and Windows 8.1. I have looked at the Windows live mail
help and cannot find out anywhere what the short cut key is to forward a
particular email in Windows Llive Mail in Windows8.1. I have tried the short
cut keys control and the letter F with no success. If anyone maybe knows the
short cut key combo I can use to forward an email in Windows Live Mail in
Windows 8.1, your wonderful very helpful info would be so very much
appreciated. Much, much thanks in advance for any help I can maybe get with
this.

Kindest regards,

Hank

Hi Kevin,
I have office 365 and I'm running JAWS16. So far I've only been using
word. It's working quite well, although it seems to be slow to start up. I
use the storage that comes with the subscription too.

Hi:

Many times, when I hit restart with Jaws 14, jaws says one program needs to
close, I then have to do a force restart. It looks like it's jaws that is
not properly closed. Has anyone had this problem?

Thanks.

Hi
I really need some help. Jaws sometimes becomes very muffled to the
extent I can not hear it. It is in both Jas 14 and 15. If I switch to
Winamp, It plays properly. Does anyone have a clue what the problem might
be? Thank you for your help.

If you are using a USB device for listening, unplug it; press
escape; and plug in again.
Works on laptops with a USP headset or usb audio card.

Best, Justin

I did submit the whole thread. They are probably a bit miffed at me for

Hello John,,
I often press alt tab several times to insure I have closed all of my
programs before I proceed to shut down my computer, and just before it
clicks off I receive part of a message informing me there is a program to
close, but the computer shuts down before I have time to do anything.
Cheers Kevin.

I'm using Jaws 16 with Windows 7, IE 9, and Firefox 38 on this particular
computer.

If I want to get the web address to put into another email I use cntrl
d and the address that is right there is the current address. I cntrl
c to copy it. I guess you could paste it anywhere you like at that
point. If I don't want to leave the current address I hit enter and I
am right back on the page.

Re: Jaws 14 when attempting to restart

Adrian Spratt

I find I always get this message now, even though I've closed all my programs. However, in my experience, I don't need to force a shutdown. Most of the time, I just wait a few moments, and then restart commences. I confirm this by pressing the up or down arrow once. (I avoid using other keys to ensure I don't accidentally trigger some action.)

Once in a while, it turns out the background program is still demanding some action. This is invariably to click on "cancel." I believe it's my antivirus program running in the background, but I can't be sure.

I have the latest release of JAWS 16, and I'm guessing it isn't caused by JAWS, although our use of JAWS may make the solution less obvious. My OS is Win7.
