Re: difficulty getting jaws icon on desktop and assigning shortcut key

Chris Jenkins

Hello Anne.

There are no folders and subfolders on the start screen using Windows 8 and
above. Barbara has reported that she is using Windows 8.1.

Try this:

1. Windows key to get to the search box
2. up arrow to all programs, submenu.
3. right arrow to open it.
4. arrow down to JAWS (closed).
5. Right arrow to open it.
6. Arrow down to tools.
7. right arrow to open it.
8. arrow down to 'start JAWS with eloquence.
9. Press the right mouse click button or shift-f10, and hope for a
send-to submenu.
10. arrow to 'send to desktop, create short cut" and whack enter.

Good luck!

Barbara,
I don't have Windows 8.1, so I don't know if it works the same as in
version
7. Once you have located JAWS on the Start Menu, try Shift F10 to bring up
the same menu that you would get with an Applications Key. See if there is
a Send To choice on this menu. Desktop may be one of the choices.

Note that Shift F10 and the Applications key don't always result in the
same
menu choices, but hopefully the Send To choice will be there.

Hi everyone,

Apologies for the font size. I had enlarged it to send a message to a
friend, and now, can't seem to get the right font back.

I am using jaws 16, latest update and windows 8.1 . I have a Dell laptop
computer, but it has the desktop keyboard. It does not have the
"application
key", which I did not realize when I purchased it. It has the "function
key." Jaws is on the "start menu" and I cannot figure out how to get it
on
the desktop", where I have always had it. I could always assign the
shortcut
key by focusing on the jaws icon and doing the alt/enter for getting to
properties. Now I can't seem to get to the jaws properties.

Any suggestions for this situation will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.

Re: pass key on audible

Adrian Spratt

True. However, it is easy enough to find such things as "account details" on the regular Audible page. Needless to say, I'm all for accessibility, but it seems to me Audible does a little too much protesting. On the one hand, they make the broad accessibility statement in that "effort" text; on the other, they fail to use headings that would make navigation faster. I can zip through the Audible website now, but a new visitor would have to figure out a few things. For example, I know to get through lists of books by searching for the word "add," which enables me to skip over lots of unwanted content. I'd be happy if Audible dropped the needless "effort" link and applied Website accessibility standards.

Adrian,
I forgot to mention in my previous message that the options in the submenus
attached to the links at the top of some Audible pages can also be accessed
by going to the page reached from the link that begins with the words"In an
effort," which is the first link at the top of these pages. One of these
options is Account Details, which you might need from time to time.

Drew,

My experience on the Audible website says to ignore this pass-through
verbalization. For example, whenever I land on the "Library" link, Audible
issues that pass-through message. However, I just press enter, as usual,
and I go right to the library. I've tried the pass-through insert-3 key on
that link just to see what happened, and the answer was nothing.

Gary,

This is useful information, and you're right, the applications key brings up a different menu depending on whether I reach the link by arrowing or tabbing. I hadn't known. That said, Audible's instruction to press the pass-through key combo is confusing when all a visitor need do is press enter to reach the item named in the link.

Adrian,
In order to get the pass through to work properly, you must tab to the links
with the submenus instead of using your arrow keys. This is due to a
long-standing problem that JAWS has of focusing a link. To see an example
of this, arrow to a link; then press your Applications key and note the menu
choices. Then tab to the same link and repeat the process. You should see
a different menu.

Re: difficulty getting jaws icon on desktop and assigning shortcut key

David Bailes

Hi Barbara,
to get a shortcut on the desktop:
1. Find Jaws on the Start screen, Apps screen or in the search results. Finding it in the search results is probably easiest, just press windows key and type jaws.
2. Open it's context menu by pressing shift + f10, and choose open file location. File Explorer opens at the location where the shortcuts for the start screen are stored, and the Jaws shortcut is already selected.
3. Open the context menu of this shortcut, and then open send to sub menu, and choose desktop.

additional notes:
1. I'm surprised there isn't a jaws shortcut on the desktop already - I thought one was placed there at installation.
2. To create a shortcut key, you don't have to create a shortcut on the desktop. You can do this using the shortcut for the start menu, which is selected in step two above.

If you want any more information in this area, you could take a look at this guide to the start screen:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Start-Screen-8p1-Guide.html

David.

I think you're talking about Ins-3--the 3 on the number row.

Dear list,

I'm sure this has been addressed before, but on the audible.com site, in order to access some of the menus jaws says "press passkey and space to get through" or something like that. What is the command for the pass key with Jaws? thanks

The glitch that's driving me nuts is when an Internet app freezes, paralyzing your entire screen. When you finally shake it loose, you lose every open Internet session--what a drag! Except for Office and one old reliable mainframe app, everything we do is done online.

I've tried WE a couple times and found pretty much the same thing.
Part of it is, I believe, simply being used to jaws and the way it does things but even with a jaws keymap active it was still enough different that I kept stumbling. Plus there are certainly things where WE simply is not as capable, things that matter a great deal to me, the dictionary being the major item. WE dictionary entries simply could not deal with numerous punctuation sequences I use all the time.
I will admit that the WE scripting system is vastly better than jaws'
home built language but writing scripts is something I only rarely need to do and now that jaws supports UIA even that difference isn't all that important.

As for jaws and crashing I find the current situation with auto restart far preferable to what it did up until a few years ago where jaws crashing would very often freeze my entire system and a reboot was the only way to recover. Waiting thirty seconds to a minute is way better than wasting five plus minutes going through a reboot (plus losing all unsaved work).

There is probably no screen reader that never crashes. However, I've

As far as I know, though, there is no solid evidence to back this up.

At any rate, if you are considering switching to WindowEyes, keep in
mind that WindowEyes behaves very differently than JAWS. That is true
of keystrokes, as well as verbosity. I myself can't stand WindowEyes!

How can we know that Window Eyes wouldn't crash? Whichever I get, I'm
going to have to out and out get the newest version.

Yes Carrylin, I agree witht the crashing issue on the issue with
Jaws. I am thinking of switching to window-eyes.

I've been having more and more problem with the crashing in the last
year, but thought it was because my windows and JAWS are pretty old.
This is a little discouraging to think I'll still have to put up with
it even after spending probably a thousand plus.

If you're using the latest version of JAWS, that's probably due to
the fact that JAWS stops working, and then restarts itself. It
happens to me all the time. I understand the reasoning behind it,
but you still don't have speech during that minute or so. You're
wondering if your computer has frozen or what's going on. FS built
that into JAWS 15 and 16. In 15, you can control when JAWS
restarts. In version 16, it restarts for you.

When I play a game that requires jaws, I notice that every once in a
while jaws will stop talking for sometimes a minute. Then it'll
start back up again.

Drew,

My experience on the Audible website says to ignore this pass-through
verbalization. For example, whenever I land on the "Library" link, Audible
issues that pass-through message. However, I just press enter, as usual, and
I go right to the library. I've tried the pass-through insert-3 key on that
link just to see what happened, and the answer was nothing.

Re: Screen rotation

Dave...

Good point, but in order to not have the JAWS hotkey rotate the screen, we
still need to go to the graphics dialog and turn off the hotkey that does
it.

Hi Guys, I can answer this one. The other day, I gave my computer to
my sighted wife and the print was sideways on the screen, portrate
mode. I went to control panel, and typed in landscape which is what
you want. A link showed up right under saying display settings. I
hit enter and there is an entire dialog telling you how the screen is
showing. I saw, for example, that the choice was on portrate and I
used arrows and got it on landscape. There are all kinds of choices
in that dialog box to change the display settings and JAWS reads the
state of all of them. Many of the controls are combo boxes or check
boxes. Well, that is how you know what your screen is looking like.
Use the search box in control panel to type in what you are thinking.
You will be amazed how easy it is to find the correct link with the
settings that you can have JAWS read to you or you can change! Take
care all of you.
