I have tried the "function key" with F10, however; the contex menu has the following choices: Unpin from start, unpin from taskbar, uninstall, open new window, run as administrator, open file location, and resize-submenu. I tried going to the file location, but didn't find anything there. I had the people from Staples where I purchased the computer, to install everything and, was surprised too that jaws was not on the desktop. I really appreciate this group of wonderful people who are so supportive. Barbara Hansen

True. However, it is easy enough to find such things as "account details" on the regular Audible page. Needless to say, I'm all for accessibility, but it seems to me Audible does a little too much protesting. On the one hand, they make the broad accessibility statement in that "effort" text; on the other, they fail to use headings that would make navigation faster. I can zip through the Audible website now, but a new visitor would have to figure out a few things. For example, I know to get through lists of books by searching for the word "add," which enables me to skip over lots of unwanted content. I'd be happy if Audible dropped the needless "effort" link and applied Website accessibility standards.

This is useful information, and you're right, the applications key brings up a different menu depending on whether I reach the link by arrowing or tabbing. I hadn't known. That said, Audible's instruction to press the pass-through key combo is confusing when all a visitor need do is press enter to reach the item named in the link.

Re: difficulty getting jaws icon on desktop and assigning shortcut key
David Bailes
Hi Barbara,
to get a shortcut on the desktop: 1. Find Jaws on the Start screen, Apps screen or in the search results. Finding it in the search results is probably easiest, just press windows key and type jaws. 2. Open it's context menu by pressing shift + f10, and choose open file location. File Explorer opens at the location where the shortcuts for the start screen are stored, and the Jaws shortcut is already selected. 3. Open the context menu of this shortcut, and then open send to sub menu, and choose desktop. additional notes: 1. I'm surprised there isn't a jaws shortcut on the desktop already - I thought one was placed there at installation. 2. To create a shortcut key, you don't have to create a shortcut on the desktop. You can do this using the shortcut for the start menu, which is selected in step two above. If you want any more information in this area, you could take a look at this guide to the start screen: http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Start-Screen-8p1-Guide.html David. original message: Hi everyone, Apologies for the font size. Plus there are certainly things where WE simply is not as capable, things that matter a great deal to me, the dictionary being the major item. WE dictionary entries simply could not deal with numerous punctuation sequences I use all the time. I will admit that the WE scripting system is vastly better than jaws' home built language but writing scripts is something I only rarely need to do and now that jaws supports UIA even that difference isn't all that important. As for jaws and crashing I find the current situation with auto restart far preferable to what it did up until a few years ago where jaws crashing would very often freeze my entire system and a reboot was the only way to recover. Waiting thirty seconds to a minute is way better than wasting five plus minutes going through a reboot (plus losing all unsaved work). The other day, I gave my computer to my sighted wife and the print was sideways on the screen, portrate mode. I went to control panel, and typed in landscape which is what you want. A link showed up right under saying display settings. I hit enter and there is an entire dialog telling you how the screen is showing. I saw, for example, that the choice was on portrate and I used arrows and got it on landscape. There are all kinds of choices in that dialog box to change the display settings and JAWS reads the state of all of them. Many of the controls are combo boxes or check boxes. Well, that is how you know what your screen is looking like. Use the search box in control panel to type in what you are thinking. You will be amazed how easy it is to find the correct link with the settings that you can have JAWS read to you or you can change! Take care all of you. _______________________________________________ Jfw mailing list Jfw@... http://lists.the-jdh.com/mailman/listinfo/jfw_lists.the-jdh.com
