Is anyone able to use JAWS on the remote computer in a remote desktop
connection?

I've done this once with no problem, but on a subsequent connection, I got a
JAWS error: "This application is not authorized to run in a terminal
connection" or something like that, and then JAWS promptly exited.

Anyone else tried this? Thanks.

If you're using the latest version of JAWS, that's probably due to the
fact
that JAWS stops working, and then restarts itself. It happens to me all
the
time. I understand the reasoning behind it, but you still don't have
speech
during that minute or so. You're wondering if your computer has frozen
or
what's going on. FS built that into JAWS 15 and 16. In 15, you can
control
when JAWS restarts. In version 16, it restarts for you.

I've tried restricting, unrestricting cursors, using the ocr feature, made
sure it's maximized, but each time I must do this, I'm needing sighted
assistance. I grabbed it from ninite.com btw, dropbox that is.

Drives me nuts, because my kids are asleep right now so I have no sighted

Re: Screen rotation.

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

Oh yeah, JAWS can care a lot. Sometimes our mainframe app flips, and it's a real mess. Much of what you need to see scrolls off the right-hand side. I think we resolve it through the View screen. In all these years, I've never had a problem with the screen itself, all applications, but I'm familiar with the control-pannel module about which he spoke.

Right, though I've got things set up so I can shut down Jaws and restart it again with no problems, and this only comes up when a sighted person tries to use my screen -- I couldn't care less about the rotation when I use it as Jaws doesn't care about it at all from what I've experienced, and I don't know there's a problem unless a sighted person, who is on hand to make sure it's rotated correctly, is telling me about it. So though it's handy to be able to do this without sighted assistance as one more accessibility issue resolved, it's not something I can imagine comes up without sighted persons involved.

Hey Nicole.

Tim's suggestion gets it done without shutting off JAWS.

Windows + M or D to desktop then take focus off any icons then open
the context menue shift + f10 then to graphic options and to rotate screen.

I can't see the orientation so for me this indicates that I've set it
to "normal" orientation....

Yes, this happens on my non-Dell machine with an Intel graphics
adapter as well. I've not found a way to right this condition with
Jaws on, but shutting it off, fixing the problem, and then turning it
right back on seems to resolve the issue.

Hi Greg,
This problem is not unique to Dell laptops; I've run into this issue
with Dell desktop machines that have an Intel graphics adapter. I
think the shortcut that caused the screen rotation is ctrl+alt+right
arrow, and to set it back to normal may be ctrl+alt+up arrow. If
that
doesn't work, put focus on the desktop and make sure that nothing is
selected. Then bring up the context menu with the applications key
or
shift+f10, and look for something related to Intel Graphics. Open
shift+that
submenu and in there you should see an option to reorient the screen.
You may also see something that will disable screen rotation.

Hope that helps.

Tom

Hi all.

From time to time my screen orientation gets rotated 90 degrees.
I
only
know this because my wife happens to see my screen. When it is
brought to
my attention, I then recollect that I have frequent cursor jumping
and
other
minor focus issues. Since they were only annoyances that I
chalked
up to
the idiosyncrasies of JAWS I didn't know to fix the problem.

So, here's a couple questions:

1. What is the shortcut to re-orientate or rotate the screen?

2. Is there any audio cue that can be assigned to indicate
the
screen
has rotated?

Not sure what the shortcut key is that rotates the screen but it
must
be
similar or adjacent to one that I use since this seems to happen
to
me
reasonably frequently.

Thanks.

dropbox set up

Hello Good folks.

Downloading dropbox onto this 8.1 computer using jfw latest version and
build.

Has anyone encountered the issue I am having, where at the dropbox set up
screen to type in your email address and password, the information is not
accessible to jaws?

I've tried restricting, unrestricting cursors, using the ocr feature, made
sure it's maximized, but each time I must do this, I'm needing sighted
assistance. I grabbed it from ninite.com btw, dropbox that is.

Drives me nuts, because my kids are asleep right now so I have no sighted
assistance; however, there is my dog but once I let her back in the house,
she will go straight to her pillow and will not lift a paw to help the hand
that feeds her.

Happy Monday to all!

Hi all,

Greetings. My name is Tejas. Presently, I am working with an MNC in
the recruitment team. As a part of my job, I have to work on the
online recruitment tool called "Taleo". The Taleo tool is designed
using the Flex screens. Hence, the JAWS is not compatible with it. Can
anyone throw light on this issue?

I use the JAWS version 12.0.1186 and I use the Internet Explorer 8 to
work on the Taleo. Can anyone of you suggest me the JAWS scripts for
Flex? I will be very grateful to you if you provide any solution for
resolving this issue.

Thanks in advance.

Re: lost instructions to make Firefox and Thunderbird work better withJaws

I checked all the settings and found they were not changed from when I went through this process before. I had reset Firefox and thought it would also reset the about:config but it did not appear to.

Thanks again.

Hi, Robert. I am posting the complete instructions here to make Thunderbird and Firefox readable with the JAWS cursor and in dialogue boxes. Previous posts have not included all the instructions.

When using Mozilla Firefox version 4 or newer, reviewing web pages using the JAWS Cursor is problematic. Mozilla is using a new graphical technology in Firefox version 4 and newer which bypasses the offscreen model, (OSM). Since JAWS For Windows depends on the OSM to allow the user to review the screen using the JAWS Cursor, things don't work the same as with older versions of Firefox, (such as version 3.6).

Solution:

1. Launch Mozilla Firefox.

2. Press Control-L to open a new link.

3. Type "about:config" and press Enter.

(All commands to type do not include the quotation marks)

4. If you are presented with a dialog which warns you about the dangers of making changes, Tab to the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button and press Enter.

5. At this point you should be out of Virtual Cursor mode and on a filter Edit Box. If not, turn off Virtual Cursor mode by pressing JAWS Key - z.

6. In the filter Edit Box type "direct2d.disabled".

7. Press Tab to get to the list of filtered entries and you should see one called "gfx.direct2d.disabled" with a default value of False.

8. Press Enter to toggle this value to True.

9. Press Shift-Tab to get back to the filter Edit Box and type "layers.acceleration.disabled".

10. Press Tab to get to the list of filtered entries and you should see one called "layers.acceleration.disabled" with a default value of False.

11. Press Enter to toggle this value to True.

12. In the filter Edit Box type "composition.enabled"

13. Press Tab to get to the list of filtered entries and you should see one called

layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled with a value of true

14. Press Enter to toggle this value to False.

15. Press Control-W to close the configuration window.

16. Restart Firefox.

you should now be able to use the JAWS Cursor to review web pages while using Mozilla Firefox version 36.0.1 and newer.

Re: lost instructions to make Firefox and Thunderbird work better withJaws

Robert Logue

Thanks Bill and Mike. This needs more attention if there is some conflict or it doesn't work for everyone.

I read the discussion in the link but this is more for screen review mode.
My problem is that Jaws doesn't read the text in edit boxes in some Mozilla dialogs. As I am finding more and more places where this happens in other applications, it is about time I phoned Freedom Scientific to see if there is something wrong with my system. Yes. I've reinstalled Windows 7 home premium 64 and Jaws.

Thanks Bill, for the complete instructions. Would be nice to know what they actually are doing that effects screen readers. Do you know where they are origenally posted?

Re: JAWS 16 / Win 8 / Office 2013 frustrations - spell check for a start!

Ann Byrne

This is from CathyAnne Murtha's book on Word 2013. Hope it helps.Locating Spelling Errors

JAWS for Windows have streamlined the manner in which documents are spell checked in Microsoft Word.

The ability to use the spelling and error features of JAWS for Windows are dependent upon the spelling and grammar error settings of Word. To insure these are configured properly, follow these steps:
* Open the Office Button (ALT-F)
* Activate the Options button (T)
* DOWN ARROW to "Proofing"
* Press TAB once to access the options on the right side of the display
* Navigate through the options and insure the following two checkboxes are checked:
o Check spelling as you type
o Mark Grammar errors as you type
* Activate the OK button with SPACEBAR to save the changes

Rather than using the spell checking dialog of Word, the screen readers offer a fool-proof manner in which to check the document.

The Navigation Quick Keys of JAWS for Windows allow quick navigation among elements of a Word document. While they are useful throughout Word, I'll address their use to spell check a document.

Toggle the JAWS Navigation Quick Keys with JAWS KEY-Z. Once the Quick Keys are enabled, press M and SHIFT-M to navigate among spelling errors in a Word document.

Focus is placed on the next or previous spelling error. You can repair the error yourself or allow The Microsoft Word application menu to assist you in repairing the error.

To use the application menu, press the WINDOWS APPLICATION KEY (the key to the left of the right CTRL). A list of suggested replacements is displayed. Navigate the list with UP AND DOWN ARROW. Press ENTER on a selection to replace the misspelled word with the replacement.

After spell checking the document, disable the Navigation Quick Keys with JAWS KEY-Z.

Appreciate Microsoft are to be blamed, breaking APIs etc, but surely JAWs

Can't Freedom just include scripts to provide the short-cuts for
'change-all, ignore, add to dictionary, etc with their distributions?

For blind users in a professional environment, its more important any aspect
of any feature to help us with ensuring our work is presented as well as
possible is still working, and spell checking being so fundamental seems
high enough a priority to surely dedicate some Freedom Scientific script
writing or bug fixing effort!

Has anyone got work-arounds or perhaps got a script you could send me to get
something working again that was working perfectly fine over the last 18

Yes, I know we can tab through to get to those options, but we need to
optimise/improve the efficiency of these trivial tasks to stand a chance at

Also, why again in 2015 do 'pic-list' combo lists in MS Excel still not read
out by JAWS 16?

I'm using VB Forms too to make MS Access DB updates, and was told by my UK
JAWS tech support that hardly anyone uses MS Access in the blind community.
Nonsense surely!

Lack of Forms access verbosity settings might suggest a lack of dev effort
from Freedom in this area too. Selecting from combo lists in these forms
with JAWS running kills MS Access too, 25% CPU consumption. With no JAWS,
there is no performance hit when combo selecting. Again, more basic bugs
surely easy to fix!

So, thought I'd email this list to off load my frustrations at finding long
standing features still not working impacting on my ability to do my daily
work in the same way as my sighted colleagues.

Appreciate Microsoft are to be blamed, breaking APIs etc, but surely JAWs
scripting is how we remedy things like this?

Can't Freedom just include scripts to provide the short-cuts for
'change-all, ignore, add to dictionary, etc with their distributions?

For blind users in a professional environment, its more important any aspect
of any feature to help us with ensuring our work is presented as well as
possible is still working, and spell checking being so fundamental seems
high enough a priority to surely dedicate some Freedom Scientific script
writing or bug fixing effort!

Has anyone got work-arounds or perhaps got a script you could send me to get
something working again that was working perfectly fine over the last 18
years???

Yes, I know we can tab through to get to those options, but we need to
optimise/improve the efficiency of these trivial tasks to stand a chance at
keeping our productivity up in a professional environment.

Hello everyone, I am checking to see if any auto dialers are friendly with Jaws 16? Thanks, Tom Macha

Re: lost instructions to make Firefox and Thunderbird work betterwithJaws

Hi Bill,

I installed Firefox 37.0.2 on 2 computers, 1 XP & 1 Win7 Pro, within the
last few days &, by changing the value from true to false on this entry,

layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled set Boolean true

either changed the values of the following to true or, the values have been
changed in the later releases of Firefox,

"gfx.direct2d.disabled" with a default value of False.

"layers.acceleration.disabled" with a default value of False.

In both instances the above values were changed to true by either Mozilla in
their new releases or by changing the first about:config entryy in this
post. If this happened by some freak thing, I don't know but, I can only
state what my results were. Others might not have the same results &, it
would not hurt to check the about:config entries you posted to be on the
safe side. I have heard of instances that making these changes in,
about:config, have not worked for some people. Why these steps work for
some but, not for others, I do not have a clue.
Take care.
Mike

Hi, Robert. I am posting the complete instructions here to make Thunderbird
and Firefox readable with the JAWS cursor and in dialogue boxes. Previous
posts have not included all the instructions.

When using Mozilla Firefox version 4 or newer, reviewing web pages using the
JAWS Cursor is problematic. Mozilla is using a new graphical technology in
Firefox version 4 and newer which bypasses the offscreen model, (OSM). Since
JAWS For Windows depends on the OSM to allow the user to review the screen
using the JAWS Cursor, things don't work the same as with older versions of
Firefox, (such as version 3.6).

Solution:

1. Launch Mozilla Firefox.

2. Press Control-L to open a new link.

3. Type "about:config" and press Enter.

(All commands to type do not include the quotation marks)

4. If you are presented with a dialog which warns you about the dangers of
making changes, Tab to the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button and press
Enter.

5. At this point you should be out of Virtual Cursor mode and on a filter
Edit Box. If not, turn off Virtual Cursor mode by pressing JAWS Key - z.

6. In the filter Edit Box type "direct2d.disabled".

7. Press Tab to get to the list of filtered entries and you should see one
called "gfx.direct2d.disabled" with a default value of False.

8. Press Enter to toggle this value to True.

9. Press Shift-Tab to get back to the filter Edit Box and type
"layers.acceleration.disabled".

10. Press Tab to get to the list of filtered entries and you should see one
called "layers.acceleration.disabled" with a default value of False.

11. Press Enter to toggle this value to True.

12. In the filter Edit Box type "composition.enabled"

13. Press Tab to get to the list of filtered entries and you should see one
called

layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled with a value of true

14. Press Enter to toggle this value to False.

15. Press Control-W to close the configuration window.

16. Restart Firefox.

you should now be able to use the JAWS Cursor to review web pages while
using Mozilla Firefox version 36.0.1 and newer.

I reset Firefox and now some areas of the browser don't read as well with
Jaws 15 and 16. Would someone please re post the fantastic instructions to
edit the Firefox configuration file to make Jaws and other screen readers
work better with it? Please, also send a link to the source if it is
published.

Thanks in advance.

Bob
