Re: application file for jaws has stopped working error message in windows 7 and jaws 14

Adrian Spratt

Ryan,

I might be reading your useful description too closely, but you omit a step before indicating you press the command to reload JAWS. I suggest you first ensure it has been unloaded by pressing either of the following two commands:

JAWS key+F4, or, better still
JAWS key+Win key+F4.

This last command shuts JAWS down completely.

Then, with JAWS 14, press your alt-control-j reload JAWS shortcut. (Note that you must have created this shortcut because it isn't a JAWS default, even though most of us use this same combination.)

I'm finding JAWS 16 much better at handling the unload/reload process. For one thing, when you press JAWS key+Win key+F4, JAWS returns on its own in a few seconds. (I believe one or more listers has said this doesn't work for them in JAWS 16, but it does for me.)

One more suggestion, which will be obvious. Try to keep open only those windows with which you're working. I don't pretend to understand PC memory and RAM issues, but experience teaches me that a PC can handle only so many applications and windows at once, especially with JAWS running. Your description makes it clear you do need to have several windows open at once, but the fewer the better.

Annabelle's antivirus suggestion is also something to look into. I know the problem occurs at work, so antivirus programming isn't directly in your control, but perhaps you could get your tech support people to look into it.

This is probably the most important message I have sent to the
list so far, and the thing I need the most assistance with since it
involves my work. My issue is this.
A year ago, on my work pc, I experienced an up-grade from JAWS 12
to JAWS 14, and from Windows xp to windows 7. On any given day it's
not uncommon for me to have at least half-a dozen windows-based
applications up that I use at different times: a couple of internet
explorer windows to read work-related documents, an instant message
program to converse with my supervisor and others, and two
applications I use to help with customer info. I use a focus 40 as a
Braille display and Jaws pretty much as a guide for some screens
that it''s easier to process through speech rather than Braille.
My issue is this. Sometimes, when switching between applications
or sometimes when pop-up messages appear, or when certain
applications are taking their time loading, Jaws freezes up. It might
just be taking its time loading, but when it freezes up it gets very
frustrating to wait on and so I press the alt control plus j command
to reload. What follows is Jaws saying "application file for Jaws has
stopped working and needs to close." There are two options. Check
online for a solution and close the program. I tab to close the
program and press enter. I have to do it several times before it goes
away. If a sighted person tries to use my mouse to assist me during
this time they can't because of the sluggishness of the system.
Have any of you in your work situations encountered this freezing
problem and how have you dealt with it? I need to find out how to
prevent it. It was not really an issue before I did my upgrade last
year, but it is now all the time. Any helpful hints would be
appreciated. I look forward to hearing (or I guess in my case it would
be reading on my Pac Mate), about your experiences with Jaws in your
work enviornments.

Kindest regards,

Ryan Coverdell

P.S. Please keep the comments professional. I realize that many
of you are probably adept at doing google searches and such, but for
specific issues like this I would appreciate personal attention. I
cannot call FREEDOM SCIENTIFIC about this since I work when their
hours are.

Hi, folks.

Writing in uncontracted braille with the focus 14 blue, how do you make a
capital letter.

Holding down dot 7 and pressing the letter still is making a lower case
letter.

All the best, Brian

Do you have any viruses on your machine? Maybe you might have an antivirus
software running in the background, I know sometimes that slows my machine
down when stuff like that happens. I especially get that
JAWS-freezing-the-whole-machine scenario when I'm trying to sign in to
Itunes. Usually what I do is press Insert+F4 and then Enter to exit JAWS. I
then wait a few seconds, and I press my hotkey (Alt+Control+Shift+J) to open
JAWS again. Usually that works for me.

Hi Soronel:
On 4/9 I installed the latest JAWS rel.16 and used it successfully.
Today it still works with the Firefox that was active on 4/9.
How do we tell Mozilla about the JAWS issue?

Hi Adrian :
Thanks for the alert.
I used Firefox this morning with no problems.
Then I got a notice wanting me to upgrade to the next version.
I'll wait a while before buying that trouble.
What were you doing when FF failed?
Can you do anything without the failure?

Re: a blind musician requesting help from other blind brothers andsisters who love to sing and play

Brian Varner <bvarner05@...>

I've got more questions than answers. I've been singing with a jazz
pianist for 5 years and he isn't tech savy with music. I paid to get
some studio recordings done with him and have a demo CD. A lot of
people have home studios. I found one by doing a google search. The
rate wasn't bad and that included the editing. We did run over on
time and that was more money but not too much. I am looking for
someone to add the tracks on the demo CD to the 2 songs I have on
soundcloud that I made with my digital recorder, an olympus digital
recorder with voice guidance. I had a friend who uploaded them but he
is being a pain in the butt right now and I don't even want to ask him
for help. I am finding out that I am "old fashioned" compared to
other singers, preferring to stick to the old jazz standards with just
voice and piano. I hope to work with a guitar player I know soon.I
don't have a newer computer because the one I use is provided through
the company I work for and has administrative settings that wil not
allow me to update IE or media player. I have issues using firefox on
soundcloud. So, my only suggestion is to find a sighted person in the
short term but look for other more tech savvy blind musicians as you
are doing. There may be a group on facebook.

(search for Brian Varner and Mike Benjamin on soundcloud to hear the
tunes I recorded with the digital recorder)

I have been singing gospel and other popular standards in
churches, rest homes, and other small groups for over twenty years.
In the early days, preparing a customized mix for each small group was
easy. Put the cd in the player, put a tape in, and press record. Or I
would put two tapes in a radio, press record and play, and seemlessly
make my mix.
Now, (at least from my point of view), making a mix isn't easy. I
have discovered a program called Cdex, which, when I run it, converts
me files to mp 3's. But where the problem arises is how I can best get
those mp-3 files onto a cd with the fewest and easiest keyboard
commands. The ripping program is mouse-oriented, and can be done by a
sighted person. But what if you want to copy an mp-3 file onto a cd?
And how can that file then be converted into a formatt that can be
played on a standard cd player? For the sake of this I am coining a
phrase radio-ready. How do I convert an mp-3 audio file down-loaded
from the internet onto a cd, with as few steps as possible,
seemlessly, onto a cd and convert it to a radio-ready formatt using
the key-board, by myself? Similarly, how do you convert songs from cd
to cd, also in as few steps as possible? Are there recording machines
that duplicate from cd to cd, so I can maybe avoid the computer?
Please, please respond to this question. It is very urgent. If you are
a musician who struggle with these issues and can share your stories,
please post to the list. If you are a musician who has answer to share
with your questioning brothers and sisters, please post. I sent out a
message earlier this week about Real Player cloud that generated
absolutely no response, and this issue with my music ministry and
accompaniment tracks is even more important. Thank you ahead of time.

I don't know of a setting that you can change in Thunderbird to modify that part of a reply.
