Re: Windows 8

Mcginnis, Barbara

Copied this from blind training.com.

If you'd rather boot to the Desktop in Windows 8, this is easily accomplished. Simply follow these steps:

Move focus to the Windows Taskbar with WINDOWS KEY-T
Tap Escape to remove focus from the application buttons
Press ALT-ENTER to open the Taskbar and Navigation Properties dialog
Within the dialog are four property sheets.
Move focus to the "Navigation" property sheet. Navigate among property sheets with CTRL-TAB and CTRL-SHIFT-TAB. Since the "Navigation" property sheet is the second property sheet, just press CTRL-TAB once.
On this property sheet are a number of checkboxes. Navigate with TAB and SHIFT-TAB until you locate the checkbox labeled, "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the Desktop instead of Start."
In Windows, checkboxes are toggled on and off with SPACEBAR. Toggle this checkbox on.
Activate the OK button to save the changes. In the future, Windows will use the Desktop as the default display.

Hi folks! I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion for some good JAWS/Windows 8 tutorials. I have a friend who just purchased a new computer with Windows 8. I would like to help him, but I am not really familiar with the Windows 8 lay-out. I've heard that there may be a way to change how Windows looks, meaning the programs menu would look the same as it does in Windows 7. Is this true? I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks very much!

Re: Webroot virus protection with jaws

Charles Krugman

While it seems like it is a good program it seems to totally lack in accessibility. I tried to use it is recommended as part of my service plan with Geeksquad. However, I could not make any changes to settings or preferences without sighted help and it was hard to read details and results. I eventually stopped using it because of the poor accessibility features.. I experimented with it at times using JAWS versions 14 and 15.

Re: Extra Sounds in JAWS 16

Douglas C. DeCamp

Ann,
I ran into this some time ago when I upgraded the sound in my computer to a
new X-FI Titanium Soundblaster card. I believe I had to get some family
help to adjust the graphical controls to add several milliseconds of
delay into sound processing. How to set these delays is probably driver
specific and I can't give you much advice there.
Hope this helps at least a little bit!

the new sound cards/drivers have actually been a cause and they recommended
dumbing down all of your sound settings. I guess I was hoping a good old

I can't address the crumpling problem, but I'm surprised by the level of

never tried mail merge since the days of DisplayWrite, but individual
envelopes are easy if you do them while the letter is still on screen. It
pulls the return and insider addresses from the letter, and puts them where
they belong. There are options for both labels and envelopes.

Hello all,

I have only had one experience with a Brothers "all-in-one" printer.
Unfortunately, it was not a good experience. This was a lazer printer. My
problems involved addressing envelopes and printing them out. I had
difficulty getting the addresses in my address file to come up
automatically, when telling the computer to choose the envelopes option.
Then when I did get the address typed or to come up and tell it to print,
the envelopes came out all crumpled up. I was told by Staples, that this
could be due to using a poor quality envelope. Well, I've never had that
experience with any other printer. I returned that printer and am now using
a Canon "all-in-one. The printer I now have, does have raised buttons, but
there are still some issues involving setting the scanner options, as the
choices are displayed in a window.

I'm considering a new printer. Right now I have a brother laser
printer, and it is top notch, but it is a printer only. I'm looking at
a networkable all-in-one. I know I won't be able to read the display
on the printer itself, but my understanding is that Brother
multifunction units come with some sort of Brother MFL software. I
would assume, perhaps incorrectly, that I could use that software to
set my preferences when making photocopies (two sided or one sided for
instance), and I could control the scanning process from the software
rather than from the printer's LCD display which I couldn't read. Does
anybody currently use the Brother software, and is it accessible? I
have JAWS 15 on Windows 7 64-bit, and I'm reasonably computer savvy
provided the controls read and don't say things like, "Button"
"button" and "button." Have you had any luck with Brother multifunction
units?

Thanks in advance,

Hi all,

I am hoping to access some Arabic text with jaws, but, unfortunately I do
not have any idea how to go about it. Does anyone have any idea where I
should start? Using latest jaws.

Thank you

Ali

Hi,
Quite well actually. I moved from office 2003 to 365. I was expecting much
difficulties with the ribbon menus etc, but, jaws works quite well.

Thank you

Does anyone know how MS Office 365 works with Jaws. I currently have Jaws
16 with Windows 7 64 bit.

Any thoughts on this will be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Brother Multifunction Printer Software and JAWS

Barbara Hansen <the2skibears@...>

Thanks for asking that question; Brad. In a few months I intend to replace
this computer; get the latest JAWS and multi-function printer. I too would
like input about the most JAWS accessible printers.

I'm considering a new printer. Right now I have a brother laser printer,
and it is top notch, but it is a printer only. I'm looking at a
networkable all-in-one. I know I won't be able to read the display on the
printer itself, but my understanding is that Brother multifunction units
come with some sort of Brother MFL software. I would assume, perhaps
incorrectly, that I could use that software to set my preferences when
making photocopies (two sided or one sided for instance), and I could
control the scanning process from the software rather than from the
printer's LCD display which I couldn't read. Does anybody currently use
the Brother software, and is it accessible? I have JAWS 15 on Windows 7
64-bit, and I'm reasonably computer savvy provided the controls read and
don't say things like, "Button" "button" and "button." Have you had any
luck with Brother multifunction units?

Thanks in advance,

Re: Arabic text

Michal Nowicki <mnowicki4@...>

FS doesn't currently offer any Arabic voices. There may, however, be SAPI 4
or SAPI 5 voices available for purchase on-line. If you find and buy such a
voice, it will work with any screen reader that supports the synthasizer in
question, not just JAWS.

I second that response. (smile) I've been using Office 365 for over a

Just my two cents worth.

Re: Navigating between tabs with Internet Explorer

Bill, if you are talking about multiple tabs that are open within the same
session, you can use control Tab. If we're talking about multiple instances
of IE, you would need to use ALT tab.
