Laptop versus desktop

Maria Campbell

I have been using laptops for years and wouldn't switch to a desktop anymore.
I do use an external keyboard, however.

Hi Kevin,
I have 2 HP laptops running W7 64 bit, Office 2007 and JAWS 14.
Works fine and I would not go back to a desktop.

I'm reading the postings about working with laptops, and I'm in the market
to eventually get one at some point this year. I am having all kinds of
difficulties with desktop computers now, and I wondered what it will take to
"rebuild" into a laptop, whether I have to rebuy programs an all that and,
well, with all the hardships around JAWS 16 being compatible overall, even
to the point where Freedom Scientific is scratching their collective heads
over what has gone awry, I am wondering whether I should be bothered, but I
need the portability for various reasons and, perhaps, I would have better
luck with the laptop than I did with the desktop.

So my question is-what is the SSD?

I keep hearing all of this about JAWS 16. I am wondering if/when 17 is coming out. I think we all know that the job for designing adequate screen readers becomes increasingly challenging.

Re: What Is It?

Mike B. <mb69mach1@...>

Hi Kevin,

It's a Solid State Drive. Below is an article that might answer some of
your questions.

Does Using an SSD Make a Difference?

Hi,

Liz Cornwell here. Recently we've started receiving a lot of questions about
SSDs. Does using an SSD make a difference? How to deal with SSDs? Should
they be defragged? So, as per your request, I'm going to shed some light on
SSDs in this newsletter.

First of all, I'd like to remind you what SSDs are. Basically, a solid-state
drive (SSD) is a data storage device, just like your hard drive. Unlike hard
drives, SSDs use NAND flash memory to store data, which makes them a lot
faster.

Does using an SSD make a difference?

Absolutely! SSDs are electronic devices and don't have any mechanical parts.
This means that there is literally nothing to slow them down. Once you have
an SSD, you'll be rid of the worst performance bottleneck. When you install
an SSD, everything else you did to boost performance will seem
insignificant. And there is more good news - file fragmentation doesn't
affect SSDs because they can grab fragmented files just as quickly as
non-fragmented files. In addition to that, using an SSD is a lot more
pleasant than using a hard drive because SSDs are quieter and don't suffer
from physical shock as much as HDDs do.

Sounds great, doesn't it? But there are a few things you need to keep in
mind when you are using an SSD. The most important thing to remember is that
SSD flash memory can only endure a certain number of writes. It's a pretty
large number, but still. That's why it's good to do everything you can to
reduce the number of writes and thus prolong the lifetime of your SSD.

Should you defragment an SSD?

This is another common question and the answer is "No". As I said before,
conventional defragmentation doesn't improve the performance of an SSD in
any noticeable ways.

You might argue and say that there are articles recommending to defrag SSDs
and various software that supports SSD defrag. Well, all I can say is that
these articles are written by people who choose an insignificant performance
gain over stability and reliability. Remember I said that you need to reduce
the number of writes? Well, conventional defrag performs plenty of writes,
doing your SSD no good. As for the SSD defrag software, reputable programs
don't actually attempt to defrag SSDs - all they do is apply file placement
optimization algorithms.

By the way, even Microsoft recognizes that SSDs don't need to be defragged.
If you have a system with an SSD, scheduled defragmentation in Windows 7 is
disabled by default when the operating system is installed on an SSD from
scratch.

I am confused on SSD. Is a SSD an external drive? Or do I buy it as part

I will wait.

This Lenovo machine is good but not great. If I wanted a high
performance machine I would also have a solid state hard drive to run
my programs in addition to a regular hard drive. In addition, I would
consider waiting to this summer or fall. Later this year, Intel will
introduce its fifth generation microprocessor called Broadwell. By
waiting a few months, you will have a faster machine with the latest
technology rather than a machine based on chip architecture from 2013.

The key to controlling online media players lies in turning off the virtual
cursor by pressing Insert Z. When this is accomplished, tab through the web
page until system focus reaches the media player (you will often need to tab
through a bunch of links before you get there). On most sites, you will
know that you are where you need to be when JAWS announces the presence of a
"scrubber," or when you press Tab and JAWS doesn't say anything (apart from
alerting you that you pressed the Tab key if you have it set to speak access
keys). At this point, you should be able to do the following quite
successfully:
1. Press the Spacebar to pause the video and to resume playback.
2. Use the left and right arrow keys to rewind and fast forward
respectively.
3. Use the up and down arrow keys to adjust the volume.

Don't forget to press Insert Z to reactivate the virtual cursor when you are
done, as you will otherwise not be able to navigate the web page. I don't
know if these shortcuts work in all video environments, but they do
generally work with Adobe Flash Player and Microsoft Silverlight. Good
luck, and please share any additional strategies you come up with.

Best,

Michal

Hello,

First, I'm using JAWS as a screen reader.

Some of the websites I'm needing to frequent these days has videos that play
using flash player. There's usually a "play" button, but the others aren't
really labeled except for numbers. I've kind of gotten used to that from
other web pages.

However, how can I get a better handle regarding watching these videos more
effectively. For instance, how can I rewind or fast forward through a
video. Right now, I have no idea how to do this, and I've needed to go back
and review something or move forward through something I've already seen. I
don't really like having to watch something again just to get to a place
where I left off.

And, while I'm on this subject, how would I do similar things via YouTube?
It would be helpful to do that.

Re: Desktop with W8?

Ann Marie Medlar <amedlar1@...>

Hi all,
I have been researching desktops

Any suggestions appreciated. I want a fast machine. I do research online, write grants, spreadsheets, office. Don't know if I need to spend $$ on I7 processor and 8GB of memory.
If any of you recently purchased a desktop or laptop please share specs and prices?
Do you have success with Jaws and Windows 8.x?

Do any of you know about:

Re: Watching Videos with Flash player and JAWS

Michal Nowicki <mnowicki4@...>

Best,

Michal

Subject: Watching Videos with Flash player and JAWS

Jim

Bissett, Tom <tom.bissett@...>

I have not found any solution for the unlabeled buttons but there is often a slider that can be used to move forward and back through a video. I get to this slider by using the jawsKey+F5 to bring up the list of controls to move me to the slider and then turn off virtual cursor with jawsKey+Z and then my left and right arrow keys will move me forward and backward through the video.

Tom Bisset

Hi all,
I asked a week or so ago about a good client for Twitter that works
like the qube. Chicken Nugget is good, but I am only getting it free
for a month. After that, I will have to pay for it which I don't
want to do. But I was on the list yesterday, and someone minsioned
TW Blue. I checked it out and it is FREE!! Could you please tell me
what other clients you are all using to use Twitter? Also, If I
uninstall Chicken Nugget and install TW Blue instead, will TW Blue
have all of my current info like people I am following and will
everything be retained that I have already done with Chicken Nugget?
I would rather use a client that is free. Please tell me about
others, and let me know if TW Blue is the best client that uses key
commands.

I am sorry to say that you ar wrong, I have used menny box's both desk top
and lap top: and every single one of them have had the reel tech sound
driver on them. I have used every one of them with skype, and have even
used them to record from skype on a occasion. Each reel tech set up is
defferent, you may have to dig a little depper in to your
Sound card config to solv your mic input ishue. I will not be held lible in
any way for any thing that you may do to your sound driver software as a
result of your reading this.

Hi.
Does any of you have a hp probook 650 computer?
Are they good with jaws.

Then I would like to warn you all on this list.
If you buy a computer, see very carefully what sound chip you get.
With realtek audio you can't use your mic at all. with skype, recording etc.
I just want to tell you so you don't need to put so much work on it that I
did.
