I have a Microsoft Surface which I like and is about the same weight as the
iPad. I use it with a USB keyboard or the one that can be purchased with it.
I add a USB hub to get more ports since there is only one. It is not the
cheapest option, but works well with JAWS and is quite fast and has
reasonable battery life.

tab character expansion

David Petersen <davepetersen@...>

When working with an ascii file, Jaws is saying the tab character as "tab" and showing a single space on the braille display. I need to be able to check alignment on items between lines, so I'd like Jaws to honor the tab expansion done by the editor, and in particular show spaces on the braille display.

I haven't found an option for this. I did see the toggle options for 8 pixel spaces, but that is really for the almost the reverse of this problem.

Help appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

I'd always heard that WordPress is fully accessible, but now that I have a WordPress-based website, I find it isn't completely true. As I've since confirmed, a screenreader user can't upload a document and create a link to it in the desired location.

A Website developer who concentrates on accessibility has since advised me that she uses Drupal, which she says is fully accessible.

Re: JAWS, Skype, and other audio/video files

Michael Mote

The only way that I have been able to accomplish this is with the use of a
mixer. It's been a while since I've had to do this, but I know that I had
to route the audio from my sound card back through my mixer. On the
surface, that may sound like a bad idea do to receiving feedback, but with
my mixer, I was able to pull it off. I believe I also muted the playback of
the audio back through the soundcard that I was using at the time. I think
it really would have to depend on the type of sound card you're using, and
if you have a mixer, or could use one.

Hello,

I have a question regarding using Skype, a screen reader, and a third party
such as YouTube or an audio file.

I was working with someone via Skype on something, and he allowed me to hear
something he'd been working on which was actually a YouTube video. I could
hear both the YouTube video and his voice coming from his computer.

Am I able to do that, even if I have a screen reader such as JAWS? If so,
how would I go about doing it?

I tried testing it out with my friend by going to YouTube and playing a
video, but what he heard was barely audible, except for what I was saying,
which was fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: JAWS, Skype, and other audio/video files

Diana Brent <dlbrent@...>

You need to play with audio and volume output settings for individual
programs in your control panel. My skype works so that JAWS is coming
through my headphones and Skype and all other voices come through my
speakers. I like it because my JAWS doesn't distract from what I am doing on
Skype. I do on-line teaching using Skype and the students I work with have
JAWS and their Skype coming through their speakers so I can hear them and
what they are doing, but they don't hear my JAWS.

JAWS may be causing the issue. I strongly recommend upgrading to JAWS 16 if
that is an option. In the last update to this latest version,
FreedomScientific squashed a bug that was causing JFW to crash Internet
Explorer. If that can't be done, consider switching to Firefox. I don't
personally use Firefox, but I heard it crashes less frequently than IE.
Good luck!

Hi all! I'm working with several users of JAWS/Magic, and I am encountering
a problem when using Internet Explorer. I'm trying to pinpoint the cause of
the issue.

Sometimes, when the users start Internet Explorer 10, they receive an error
message saying that Internet Explorer has stopped working and needs to
close. The message says that a problem with this program has caused
Internet Explorer to stop working. I'm wondering if JAWS could be causing
the issue. We're using the latest build of JAWS 15. I have also tried IE
11, and IE 8, with no success. It doesn't seem to matter which version of
IE we use, this error continues to pop up. It doesn't happen every single
time. I am wondering if anyone out there has a suggestion as to what I need
to look at in order to resolve this issue. Thanks very much!
