Re: Internet Explorer issues with JAWS/Magic

Michal Nowicki <mnowicki4@...>

JAWS may be causing the issue. I strongly recommend upgrading to JAWS 16 if
that is an option. In the last update to this latest version,
FreedomScientific squashed a bug that was causing JFW to crash Internet
Explorer. If that can't be done, consider switching to Firefox. I don't
personally use Firefox, but I heard it crashes less frequently than IE.
Good luck!

Michal

Subject: Internet Explorer issues with JAWS/Magic

Hi all! I'm working with several users of JAWS/Magic, and I am encountering
a problem when using Internet Explorer. I'm trying to pinpoint the cause of
the issue.

Sometimes, when the users start Internet Explorer 10, they receive an error
message saying that Internet Explorer has stopped working and needs to
close. The message says that a problem with this program has caused
Internet Explorer to stop working. I'm wondering if JAWS could be causing
the issue. We're using the latest build of JAWS 15. I have also tried IE
11, and IE 8, with no success. It doesn't seem to matter which version of
IE we use, this error continues to pop up. It doesn't happen every single
time. I am wondering if anyone out there has a suggestion as to what I need
to look at in order to resolve this issue. Thanks very much!

Did you guys see my response? The problem is that the link appears on
multiple lines. That is why it needs to be copied and pasted into the
browser's address bar directly. Have you tried that?

yes the standard mode isn't that bad to use once you are familiar with the screen layout. but have you done any chat or video calls through the standard google or i should say gmail interface? if so can you tell me any tricks you have found to make it easier to use e.g. steps you go through for a. a chat session and b. step you go through to make a video call.

thanks

have a good day

Re: windows 10 petition

Kane Brolin

To James And Others:

Two currently active petitions relate to Microsoft Windows, that I
know of. One is asking Microsoft to make the Windows installation
process accessible to the blind--something long overdue, in my
opinion. https://windows.uservoice.com/forums/265757-windows-feature-suggestions/suggestions/7128359-make-the-windows-installation-process-accessible-t

The second petition that's made some waves is one that asks Microsoft
to make a fully functional screen reader native to Windows 10.
https://www.change.org/p/microsoft-add-a-native-fully-functional-screen-reader-to-windows-10?recruiter=206104086
That one is on Change.org, and it is rather controversial, because it
opens up the issue of whether we as disabled users should come to
depend on the biggest players in hardware and software
development--e.g., Apple and Microsoft--to manage the avenues for our
accessibility. I encourage everyone who cares about this to read Tim
Connell's article entitled "What Is The Cost Of A Free Product?" in
the November, 2014 edition of "The Braille Monitor."
https://nfb.org/images/nfb/publications/bm/bm14/bm1410/bm141006.htm
Mr. Connell is Australian and is not partial toward the Federation in
regard to political action in the USA. But he does seem to be a very
good strategic thinker when it comes to technology, and he makes some
extremely thoughtful arguments in favor of the model that has
permitted boutique companies such as Freedom Scientific and GW Micro
to succeed up to now in the world of high tech accessibility.

Always pay attention to the garranteed delivery dates. Amazon will give you
an extra month of Prime if your package is late. You just have to contact
them about it. I've done this a few times and it's worked for me. I've also
gotten gift card promo codes for my troubles. Nice perk that Amazon doesn't
really advertize, but is there. Put it this way... I'm not exactly
heartbroken should an order show up one day late.

Re: Amazon Prime

It depends. I would imagine if one ordered something monthly, and maybe other things now and then, it will be worth it. It seems like most places charge $6 to $8 for shipping, so one monthly order may save you some, since 2-day usually costs a lot more.

Being worth it is a subjective thing. The wife and I have it and like it a
lot. Free two day shipping, Amazon Instant Video, Subscribe and Save, etc.
But you were asking about Jaws based access. Other than accessing the Amazon
site with Jaws, I don't' really use the services offered by Amazon Prime
with Jaws. I know there's a Kindle reading solution for the PC that's
supposed to be accessible, but I tried it a couple of years ago and found
the over all experience to be tedious and annoying. All the other stuff
which I do think is worth the $99.00 we access off of other platforms.
Mainly our iOS devices and the Roku. My wife's sighted so she's a heavy user
of Instant Video, but it's there for me on my iPhone if ever I want to watch
something. The iOS Kindle app is fully accessible now.
Even then, I've found myself doing a lot of my shopping on Amazon more and
more with the iPhone app.
Again, I do think it's worth it, but not because of any special
accessibility with Jaws.

Thanks. I use Amazon but I signed up for Amazon Prime which costs
$99.00 each year and I am trying to decide if it is worth that.

I joined Amazon Prime. I have 30 days to decide if I want to continue
my membership. Have any of you used Amazon Prime? If so, what do you
like best about it? I am thinking about the movies, music and Kindle
Books. Since I use JAWS to access those materials, I especially want
to know how well it works.

That's because the link appears on two lines. The solution is to copy the
entire link and paste it into the address bar of the web browser. That's
what I did, and it worked.
