Re: J15.0.12085 Build Update Download Links

Michael Mote

If you are able to update from JAWS 15 to JAWS 16 now, you will be able to
do it later. Going back to 15, if you choose to do this, will not affect
your ability to update back to JAWS 16, whenever you decide to do this.

It's not weird at all. There are those of us who still use Windows XP, and
JAWS16 will not work with Windows XP. So for those who cannot migrate to the
latest version, they are trying to fix all the problems in JAWS15, so that
Windows XP users will have a relatively stable version to use until they
upgrade to a newer Windows version.

Re: Timed licenses? and rescuing my Jaws?

Adrian Spratt

Gerardo,

This new timed license arrangement is discussed in FSCast 98. Eric doesn't answer your Mexico-specific questions, but he does go into some detail and the thinking behind it. Each license will be good for ninety days and can be renewed repeatedly. He projects the cost at about $2 U.S. a day. Here's the link to the FSCast download page:

http://www.freedomscientific.com/About/FSCast/FullListing#Episode99

I believe you can also email FS directly from there if you wish to pursue your other questions.

I wonder how good is the new Jaws Timed Licenses alternative? Have you
guys used it? How much is it, or wherwhere can I find info on it? which
also makes me wonder, is it worth it to somehow rescue my Jaws English,
but to be switched to Spanish, or would I be better off, if
circumstances allow, buying a new license? I still remember my serial
number of 23 something 56! but the dealers here in Mexico don't seem to
take me seriously, thus I wonder if I can do this directly from FS?

Maria, let me answer this one. Although born in Buffalo and now an Oregonian, Dave's heritage is Swedish, and he is an enormously proud granddad, or in his tradition, farfar. He is also one of the most knowledgeable and helpful contributors to this list. No, I've never met him, but his personality comes through in his posts. Your word "humility" is apt.

There are two ways to do this, but only one works reliably for me. That one
is

1. Place your cursor in the row where column headings are located.
2. Press the following acrobatic key stroke: insert+control+alt+c.

This creates a .jsi file, which is a JAWS file, associated with the
Excel file you are working with. If you take the Excel file to a
different computer or location, the .jsi file will not apply so you
will have to redo the keystroke.

To set row titles the keys are insert+control+alt+r.

There is another way to do it, which is described in the JAWS
training materials. It is similar to setting a bookmark for row and
column titles in Word. However, I have been unable to make it work.

Good luck!

Insert+Alt+Control+C for columns, or Insert+Alt+ Control +r for rows. Set
the cursor on the column or row and hit that key combination. You can do
only one of these at a time. Excel will also sometimes forget this, so you
may have to do it more than once. I suggest saving the sheet as soon as
you've done it as that seems to help it to remember a lot of the time.

Hello list friends,

I recently purchased a new computer and need some advice. The computer is a
Dell laptop, Inspiron 15.6 with 1 TB hard drive and 8 gigs. Also has
IntelI5.

I purchased it through our Staples store and opted for them to transfer
files from my old pc, download JAWS and Microsoft Office 2010. I think all
of this went farely well.

My problem involves some features using JAWS16. By the way, I am using
Windows 8.1. The laptop also has the desktop keyboard. There are several
features using the function keys that do not seem to be working, Ex. The
"insert" plus F7 for getting to links, the f12 with the "insert" for
telling
time etc. Also on the "numpad", I always have to turn off the "numpad
on/off
key. Is there a way to solve this problem, am I missing something, any
suggestions would be much appreciated.

If you put in titles and decide you don't want them at all, you
either have to delete the .jsi file, or reset the title rows/columns
so they are out of your way. Resetting is easier than deleting. You
could set column xx as the row title. JAWS doesn't read to the left
of the row title, so xx would be out of the reading range. You could
set row 300 as the column title, and use the rows above it.

To delete the .jsi file
1. Open programs.
2. Find your version of JAWS, which will be closed.
3. Open it with right arrow.
4. arrow down to 'explore JAWS', which will be closed
5. Open it with right arrow.
6. Arrow down to 'explore my settings and press enter.
7. The first item is 'personalized settings'; it isn't selected.
8. Select/open it.
9. Delete the .jsi file that matches your Excel file name.

good luck!

I wonder what do the native Skype scripts supposedly for, or in what
ways do they better the use of Skype? I had many expectations with them,

HI guys
Anyone with Jaws16 have the little annoyance that when editing or
writing up a new tweet with TheQube, Jaws no longer reads what we're
writing? I have to use Control+left/right arrows to make sure I'm typing
in the right things! Can you guys reproduce this also?

Typically in fs 3 you should be able to arrow down after the header fields
and read the text there unless it specifically says there's no text for
that
audio. Alternatively on the fs webpage there are html links to download
instead of the mp3 versions if you just want text.

Deleting is not as complicated as that. When in Excel, press JAWS+V to open

the quick change dialog. Then type the word title and you will find one item

indicating the row/column identifiers. below that is a clear title
definitions that you can use to clear it out.

9. Delete the .jsi file that matches your Excel file name.

good luck!

Hi Anna,
If you use the Training option in the help menu you'll get the Daisy Reader

but, using
the Jaws Help Topics option allows you to read the training material with
Jaws.

Take Care.

Once you're on the jaws user interface and you access the help menu inside
of training. You have a list of different training material. You want to hit
enter on whichever link it is that you want to read. Then you will get text.
If you want the human voice to speak, you hit control plus P for play or hit
the same keystroke to pause. If you want to go back to the List of training
material, you hit control plus Jay.

I am using JAWS with Windows 8 on a Surface computer and with aFocus

letters
will regularly not get entered where they should in a word but then get

saying my typing is blameless, but I have only seen this specific behaviour

I've noticed jaws suddenly stops working sometimes and automatically
reboots
itself after 30 seconds. But it's annoying because it typically happens
when I'm reading email or in Firefox.

I've noticed jaws suddenly stops working sometimes and automatically
reboots
itself after 30 seconds. But it's annoying because it typically happens
when I'm reading email or in Firefox.

I do recall a few instances within the last few months where I suddenly
found myself in insert/overtype mode. I cannot remember if it was in
Windows Live Mail, Word, or Outlook. In any case, all I could do is turn
insert mode off, and the command always worked.

I am using JAWS with Windows 8 on a Surface computer and with aFocus
braille display with speech echo turned off. Since I upgraded JAWS a few
days ago, I have found that as I type in an e-mail or Word Document,
letters
will regularly not get entered where they should in a word but then get
carried along ahead of my cursor until I notice them and edit. I am not
saying my typing is blameless, but I have only seen this specific behaviour
since upgrading. Thoughts?

Hi everyone,

I am thinking of purchasing a new laptop running Windows 8.1. I?ve heard
some good things about the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro, which is a hybrid
laptop/tablet. I?m wondering if anyone is using this model with Jaws, and,
if so how well does it work? I?m running Jaws 16. The Yoga 2 Pro I?m looking
at has an i7 Haswell processor, 8 GB of RAM and a 260 GB SSD drive. Some of
the reviews I?ve read are good and some are not so good, but that?s usually
the way with user reviews. There is a newer model, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro
which has a new 5th generation processor, but apparently the battery life
isn?t as good, and it?s an extra 300 dollars or so.

I?d really appreciate hearing from anyone who is using any of the Yoga Pro
models.

I?d also appreciate hearing about any laptops people are using with Jaws
that work well.

Thanks,

Russell

I pmayed with a yoga laptop for a few days and i didnt find a way to set the
function keys to work normally. I had to use the fn key in combination with
other key to check the time etc this was the only drawback that I had with
this laptop. If there was a way to have the function keys work normally, it
would be a great laptop.

Hi,
Usually there are utilities provided by Lenovo (or from within firmware)
where you can toggle this behavior.
As for laptops in general, I tend to favor those made by Dell, Toshiba and
Asus. Broadwell (5th generation Intel Core) processors are advertised as
less power hungry, but who knows what the real life battery life might be.
For best performance, I recommend sticking with JAWS 15 for now (if using a
touchscreen); in my opinion, JAWS 16 doesn't offer compelling features yet.
Cheers,
Joseph

Russell:
I cannot help with a Yoga Pro model. I can, however, tell you about my
basic Yoga.
I purchased it virtually as soon as Windows 8 came out. The Yoga was so
hard to find, I couldn't get it anywhere in San Diego. I had to go to
Orange County, which was too far to drive. Ultimately, I got it in Topeka,
Kansas.
That was 2 or 3 years ago.
The Yoga is the best computer I've ever owned. The home, end, pageup,
pagedown, and other keys are the best I've ever seen. Also, unlike some
laptops, there is an applications key. I regularly get 7 to 10 hours of
battery life. Just go to mobility center, turn down the screen, and put in
power saver mode.
The only trick is with the insert key. I like to have two JAWS keys, the
capslock key and the insert key. Unfortunately, I cannot have both a second
JAWS key and an applications key. I can have an applications key and one
JAWS key, which is how I have my Yoga set up. The touch screen is great.
Yes, there are actually some functions where touching the screen is pretty
handy. If you are lecturing. It is fantastic for notes.
I've used nothing but Lenovo laptops and ultrabooks for 10 years. As far as
I'm concerned, they are the Gold Standard of laptops.
Of course, this (like pretty much everything else you hear about laptop or
computer choices) is subjective, and personal taste varies widely.
One thing I would encourage you to think about. If you get a Lenovo (or
most any laptop), I would encourage you to check out Best Buy and the Geek
Squad.
They can help you get your firmware and other settings fixed, get your virus
protection set up, and give you a little tutorial on your laptop before you
leave the store.
Then, at any time thereafter, they are as close as a phone call away. They
are amazing.

Hi guys
OK I've done everything I could think of; I know it's possible because
on other Jaws, I was able to accomplish the goal of not having to hear
Windows+m, Alt+control+so and so and other keystrokes verbalized! I
turned off labels for keys such as enter, Tab Application etc; I have
the Keyboard set to Words. What else or other ideas do you guys have?

I am using the older (last year's) model of the Lenovo Pro and it works
great! My son went into the bios, turned off the hot key option and enabled
the legacy option for function keys so now my functions keys work without
pressing the fn key.

A recent thread discussed electronic signatures. One way or the other, I've
figured out how to create and then insert an electronic signature into a
Word 2010 document. In case it saves anyone the same effort in the future,
here are the steps.

Note. An electronic signature is different from a digital signature, which
requires obtaining a certificate of authentication. For an electronic
signature, you create an image file with your signature and then insert it
into a document. No certification involved.

Creating an image file of the signature.

1. Write the signature on a piece of paper, and then scan the paper.
Note. Getting the signature in just the right place in the picture takes
some trial-and-error. To get it right, I relied on sighted assistance.

2. save the resulting picture as a graphic file in any of the common
formats, such as JPG, GIF, or PNG.

Note. From here on, sighted assistance is not required, so if you save the
graphic file for future use, you'll never need it again when you add an
electronic signature to a document, except perhaps for verification.

Inserting a picture file with a signature into a Word 2010 document.

1. Locate the point in the document where you want the signature
inserted.
Note. The document I just signed had a signature line that JAWS didn't
detect. There were four blank lines above my printed name, so I selected the
midway point. Then I determined how far the lines above and below were
tabbed in, and then tabbed to the same point on this blank line.

2. Press alt-n for insert, then p for picture.

3. As prompted, type in the filename and, if needed, the path. Press enter.

4. JAWS verbalizes the size of the insertion.

5. Using alt-delete, double-check that the graphic with the signature is
positioned where you want it. To be completely sure, ask someone with vision
to look at the page.

Be sure to save the graphic file with the signature for future use. Diana
posted that you may want to store the graphic as an AutoText in your Word
template, so it can be inserted in any document. In my case, I saved the
graphic file in a location where I'll remember for future retrieval.

I hope this explanation is both clear and useful.

2. Press alt-n for insert, then p for picture.

3. As prompted, type in the filename and, if needed, the path. Press
enter.

4. JAWS verbalizes the size of the insertion.

5. Using alt-delete, double-check that the graphic with the signature is
positioned where you want it. To be completely sure, ask someone with
vision to look at the page.

Subject: Directions for creating and inserting an electronic signature
using JAWS

A recent thread discussed electronic signatures. One way or the other,
I've figured out how to create and then insert an electronic signature
into a Word 2010 document. In case it saves anyone the same effort in
the future, here are the steps.

Note. An electronic signature is different from a digital signature,
which requires obtaining a certificate of authentication. For an
electronic signature, you create an image file with your signature and
then insert it into a document. No certification involved.

Creating an image file of the signature.

1. Write the signature on a piece of paper, and then scan the
paper.
Note. Getting the signature in just the right place in the picture takes
some trial-and-error. To get it right, I relied on sighted assistance.

2. save the resulting picture as a graphic file in any of the
common formats, such as JPG, GIF, or PNG.

Note. From here on, sighted assistance is not required, so if you save
the graphic file for future use, you'll never need it again when you add
an electronic signature to a document, except perhaps for verification.

Inserting a picture file with a signature into a Word 2010 document.

1. Locate the point in the document where you want the signature
inserted.
Note. The document I just signed had a signature line that JAWS didn't
detect. There were four blank lines above my printed name, so I selected
the midway point. Then I determined how far the lines above and below
were tabbed in, and then tabbed to the same point on this blank line.

Be sure to save the graphic file with the signature for future use.
Diana posted that you may want to store the graphic as an AutoText in
your Word template, so it can be inserted in any document. In my case, I
saved the graphic file in a location where I'll remember for future
retrieval.

I hope this explanation is both clear and useful.

Hi Gerardo,

Jaws has a merge utility tool. Open the Jaws context menu with Insert /
Jaws key + J, this keystroke is if you run Jaws from the system tray, arrow
down to Utilities press enter , arrow down to, Merge Utility, & press
enter.
You'll have a choice of which Jaws version you want to merge your settings
from so, highlight the version you want to use, tab to okay & press enter.
HTH

Take care.

Hi there,

I have a computer that has Windows 8. I was pretty used to Windows 7, so
it's still different.

This came with the Windows 8 Skype 8 app. How useable is it, and can I
still use the JAWS scripts for it?

I find it very different to use and frankly, it's hard to figure out.

Do I need to download a different Skype version?

Any help would be appreciated because I need to be able to use Skype.

Thanks.

Jim

I've seen this too. I have reported it to FS, but so far haven't seen
anything in terms of correcting it. It seems to happen in Outlook and Word
for me.

Thoughts?

That matches what I've read. You probably know there's an IBM legacy there.
When it came to marketing, IBM was clueless, but their quality and service
were platinum. There's nothing around to match them today, unless you get a
custom-built job, so I'd trust Lenovo.

Thanks,

Russell

I see this on my windows 7 computer at work, but not on my windows 8.1

I have a Yoga 2 11, which is a similar machine though not quite as powerful
as what you're looking at. I love the machine with one exception. The
function keys are used for other things, and it doesn't even seem as though
you can use the FN key with them to get normal function keys. This can be
fixed quite easily, though, if you have sighted assistance. I have an
article that tells you step-by-step how to do it. I can email it off list if
you would like. Now that I have that problem fixed, I absolutely love the
machine. I take it almost everywhere, and I'd venture to say that I use it
like some people use their iPads or other mobile devices. Hope this helps.

Jaws experiences

Gerardo Corripio <gera1027@...>

I've been very curious of this topic; before I get any call to attention, this will be the only time I'll ask: Here in Mexico Jaws is very expensive, thus we have to get it you know how. I'm curious if you guys in the US also have this annoyance? yes I know Rehab pays for your Jaws, but having to renew the SMA from I imagine your own money, especially when being low-income? If any of you know of a list where this topic can be discussed, or if wanting to discuss further, at my EMail? please let me know? Again I won't ask on here again so don't worry!

Not strange at all. Suppose you're someone who has decided not to renew
their SMA to JAWS 16. Therefore JAWS 15 is your last version -- you would
appreciate any other updates or bug fixes.

I wondered that myself. Maybe they messed up or something. But it
certainly is a strange thing.

Re: Anyone Noticed erratic typing behaviour after upgrading to JAWS 16?

Londa Peterson

Thanks for the warning! I'll think twice before changing that setting. Also,
I noticed that you had your typing echo off. I have mine set to words, and
the strange thing is that JAWS says all the words correctly unless I really
do make a mistake. I don't find the problem until I spell check or proofread
the message. I'm only seeing this in Outlook so far.

More erratic now. I changed that one setting in JAWS and when I replied to
an e-mail, all the text went in from right to left, very cool if you want to
spontaneously type backwards or work in other languages that are intended to
work that way. Not so great for communicating in English. When I changed the
JAWS setting back, my typing flipped back as well. Good thing or I wouldn't
be writing this.

a word but then get carried along ahead of my cursor until I notice
them and edit. I am not saying my typing is blameless, but I have only
seen this specific behaviour since upgrading. Thoughts?
I have seen this too, and only since upgrading. It happens everywhere, not
just in any particular application.

Turning off the option that forces the cursor to follow the braille display
eliminated the bug for me. (This option is off by default but I had turned
it on. Turning it off again was enough to work around the bug. I haven't yet
submitted a bug report.)

especially since those on xp still paid for a sma that would entitle them to two new versions.

It's not weird at all. There are those of us who still use Windows XP, and JAWS16 will not work with Windows XP. Still, it's very curious. This should have been released before Jaws 16, not after. Just alittle weird, that's all.

There have been such instances in the past. I think off hand there was one
for JFW 14 or 13. Why not? If it addresses bugs then more so the better.
