Re: Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro?

Ed Marquette <marquette.ed@...>

Russell:
I cannot help with a Yoga Pro model. I can, however, tell you about my basic Yoga.
I purchased it virtually as soon as Windows 8 came out. The Yoga was so hard to find, I couldn't get it anywhere in San Diego. I had to go to Orange County, which was too far to drive. Ultimately, I got it in Topeka, Kansas.
That was 2 or 3 years ago.
The Yoga is the best computer I've ever owned. The home, end, pageup, pagedown, and other keys are the best I've ever seen. Also, unlike some laptops, there is an applications key. I regularly get 7 to 10 hours of battery life. Just go to mobility center, turn down the screen, and put in power saver mode.
The only trick is with the insert key. I like to have two JAWS keys, the capslock key and the insert key. Unfortunately, I cannot have both a second JAWS key and an applications key. I can have an applications key and one JAWS key, which is how I have my Yoga set up. The touch screen is great. Yes, there are actually some functions where touching the screen is pretty handy. If you are lecturing. It is fantastic for notes.
I've used nothing but Lenovo laptops and ultrabooks for 10 years. As far as I'm concerned, they are the Gold Standard of laptops.
Of course, this (like pretty much everything else you hear about laptop or computer choices) is subjective, and personal taste varies widely.
One thing I would encourage you to think about. If you get a Lenovo (or most any laptop), I would encourage you to check out Best Buy and the Geek Squad.
They can help you get your firmware and other settings fixed, get your virus protection set up, and give you a little tutorial on your laptop before you leave the store.
Then, at any time thereafter, they are as close as a phone call away. They are amazing.

Subject: Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro?

Hi everyone,

I am thinking of purchasing a new laptop running Windows 8.1. I’ve heard some good things about the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro, which is a hybrid laptop/tablet. I’m wondering if anyone is using this model with Jaws, and, if so how well does it work? I’m running Jaws 16. The Yoga 2 Pro I’m looking at has an i7 Haswell processor, 8 GB of RAM and a 260 GB SSD drive. Some of the reviews I’ve read are good and some are not so good, but that’s usually the way with user reviews. There is a newer model, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro which has a new 5th generation processor, but apparently the battery life isn’t as good, and it’s an extra 300 dollars or so.

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who is using any of the Yoga Pro models.

I’d also appreciate hearing about any laptops people are using with Jaws that work well.

Thanks,

Russell

Re: Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro?

Hi,
Usually there are utilities provided by Lenovo (or from within firmware) where you can toggle this behavior.
As for laptops in general, I tend to favor those made by Dell, Toshiba and Asus. Broadwell (5th generation Intel Core) processors are advertised as less power hungry, but who knows what the real life battery life might be. For best performance, I recommend sticking with JAWS 15 for now (if using a touchscreen); in my opinion, JAWS 16 doesn't offer compelling features yet.
Cheers,
Joseph

If there was a way to have the function keys work normally, it would be a great laptop.

Once you're on the jaws user interface and you access the help menu inside of training. You have a list of different training material. You want to hit enter on whichever link it is that you want to read. Then you will get text. If you want the human voice to speak, you hit control plus P for play or hit the same keystroke to pause. If you want to go back to the List of training material, you hit control plus Jay.

Deleting is not as complicated as that. When in Excel, press JAWS+V to open

If you put in titles and decide you don't want them at all, you
either have to delete the .jsi file, or reset the title rows/columns
so they are out of your way. Resetting is easier than deleting. You
could set column xx as the row title. JAWS doesn't read to the left
of the row title, so xx would be out of the reading range. You could
set row 300 as the column title, and use the rows above it.

To delete the .jsi file
1. Open programs.
2. Find your version of JAWS, which will be closed.
3. Open it with right arrow.
4. arrow down to 'explore JAWS', which will be closed
5. Open it with right arrow.
6. Arrow down to 'explore my settings and press enter.
7. The first item is 'personalized settings'; it isn't selected.
8. Select/open it.
9. Delete the .jsi file that matches your Excel file name.

good luck!
