Re: Amazon & Jaws

Angel

It is so discouraging to think, a site which worked so well for us blind consumers of goods should be changed for the worse. It is so sad to think we can't lead a relatively challenge free life. Even though we may have individual challenges. Which must be overcome. It seems, when one challenge is mastered,, we are constantly faced with new ones..

Hi, and it didn't work for me either. What's worse, when I tried to make a
purchase using their limited but functional Accessibility Option there
wasn't a place to enter a "Promo Code." So far Amazon has lost out on over
$150 of business from me alone, which leaves me wondering just what the
grand total is? OK, I'm done with my rant...

Here's what I can report:

1. Using Internet Explorer 11, Windows 7 64-bit, and JAWS 15, I was able to
add something to my cart using the regular site. When I tried to "proceed
to checkout" by pressing the space bar, nothing happened.
When I used "route JAWS to PC", then the Insert 8 (left click) command, I
went immediately to the sign-in page. I did not proceed, because I didn't
need the coffee I had placed in my shopping cart.

2. I then went to the latest FireFox on the same computer running Windows 7

For what it's worth, I have similar issues with Google Voice and Internet

Hi Jimmy,
There is sure a lot of confusion around laptop, notebook and netbook.
What is a netbook?
I presume if it runs OpenBook it must also run JAWS?

I've never used a Netbook with Open Book. I have used one with JAWS,
although it was an older XP Netbook. It worked fine, but it was slow.
The biggest drawback to most netbooks is that they are low on memory, and
they're upgradeable but it's not always easy.

I would see a Netbook as more of a stopgap measure than a long-term
solution. I sort of abandoned mine when it wouldn't run the tax website I
needed to do my work.

Hmmmm.

One thing I do when having to route the jaws cursor to, say the proceed to chekcout button is to make certain the cursor is actually positioned on the button label.

I will have Jaws read letter by letter, and when I hear p r o, I will do the left mouse button click.

Don’t know if that is any help, just throwing it out there. <smile>

Re: Amazon & Jaws

John Gurd

I tried routing the Jaws cursor, but that didn't work for me. I've got the
same set up: JFW 15 and Windows 7 with IE11. However, taking the virtual
cursor off with ctrl-Z sometimes works if I then use tab to get to the
button, but not always. It's really quite strange.

64-bit and JAWS 15. In Firefox, I didn't have any issues getting to the
checkout page just by pressing the space bar.

For what it's worth, I have similar issues with Google Voice and Internet
Explorer 11, but in Firefox the buttons all work as they're supposed to.

If you have an external hard drive, I think I'd go for a tablet with a
keyboard instead. It'll do everything you want, and they're actually more
powerful than netbooks. The only disadvantage may be storage. You can use an
external hard drive with a tablet though.

I have a netbook and when I was using it, it had JAWS, OpenBook, Duxbury,

I've never used a Netbook with Open Book. I have used one with JAWS, although it was an older XP Netbook. It worked fine, but it was slow. The biggest drawback to most netbooks is that they are low on memory, and they're upgradeable but it's not always easy.

I would see a Netbook as more of a stopgap measure than a long-term solution. I sort of abandoned mine when it wouldn't run the tax website I needed to do my work.

Firefox says "clickable" after every line

Adrian Spratt

I've encountered this problem at only one website so far. It's a subscription service that requires logging in. Has anyone encountered it elsewhere? Is there a fix?

In Firefox, JAWS is saying "clickable" at the end of every line of text. No link is involved. I assume Firefox is verbalizing some embedded code. This problem does not occur with IE11.

Dave,
You are correct about the quality of shopping on Amazon and their willingness to deal with any problems with items purchased. Despite this, at least in Los Angeles, their standard website stop working with jaws and IE or Mozilla last week. When I say that it has stop working, I mean if you want to add an item to your shopping cart, then proceed to checkout, it isn't working. My wife and I belong to Amazon Prime, and typically place orders at least three times per week since shipping is free and quick. I have no idea how the Amazon network architecture is structured, or how many thousands of servers they are using and the order in which changes to the servers are implemented, but clearly changes were made to the servers serving Los Angeles last week, and they no longer work sufficiently with Jaws to complete an order.

Now that my daughters birthday is here and will be gone, I can start

If there is an issue, I will be forced to take my money elsewhere lol.

I only have one sound card, but when I go to utilities in the jaws program,

two sound cards listed.
One of those is "windows default sound card".
Check the one that is not checked and you should be good to go.

Warning: I seem to remember that in earlier versions you could lose speech
doing this. If so, don't panic, just press the up arrow until you get speech

Updating a credit card on Amazon

Brad Martin

Just for giggles, I logged into my Amazon account using Firefox. I needed to change the expiration date of a credit card which had expired, and since people were talking about credit cards, Amazon, and JAWS, I figured I'd give it a whirl.

Using Firefox version 32.0.3, Windows 7 64-bit, and JAWS 15, I was able to update the card successfully. While it is true that the month and the year were "buttons" instead of Combo boxes, the process was easy, with one minor hiccup.
1. I found the credit card I wanted to change. It was a link, so I hit enter.
2. I found the Edit button and pressed the space bar.
3. I then had to refresh the screen in order to notice that anything had changed. I pressed Insert F7 which gave me the links list, and then pressed escape. You could probably have just pressed Control Escape. That was the minor hiccup.
4. Then I found the offending year that needed to be changed. It said, "2014 button" so I pressed space bar. It turned into a list, so I used the down arrow to select the new year, and then pressed the space bar again to select that year.
5. Then I found the Save button and pressed enter.

That was my process, no fuss, no muss, no pain. Hope it helps you.
