You may want to redirect this question to something like the support list,
rather than this one - as it has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with
anything the topic of the list would be remotely involved in.

Subject: Off Topic - "Smart" Canes

Hi!

Some time ago, I read two articles about two separate smart canes. Each
cane uses different technologies (e.g. sonar, infrared) to detect objects in
a blind person's path, and then provides feedback with various methods
(vibration, beeps) about that object's distance. Does anyone use these
canes? What is the best smart cane? For both of these smart canes, each
was new - "version 1." Since "version 2" of all new technology is *way*
better than "version 1", is there any news about newer versions of these
smart canes that might be coming out soon?

Many thanks,

Richard

Keypad Entry with Skype and JFW?

Jerry Berrier

Hello JAWS List. I am forwarding this question from a friend. He is using
the latest versions of JFW and Skype in Windows 7. Thanks for any
responses.

Do you happen to know how people can use their Skype telephone accounts
interactively? For example, I can call an agency's Auto-attendant

but the touchtone numbers won't respond during the Skype call. With GW
Skype, I could do this easily, thus record professional-sounding
announcements.

I can still do this with a regular phone, but I'm not as happy with the
sound.

Second, the Facebook app. Same here, but it seems to be all tab navigation

Next, has anyone had any success with the Netflix app, Audible app for

Finally, does anyone have even a beginning list of apps that work well with
JFW 15/16 beta and Win 8.1? Thanks in advance!!!

Re: Capturing balloons

Paul Martz <skewmatrix@...>

Raymond, if it makes you feel any better, those stupid notification
balloons are tedious even for fully sighted users.

Adding to the litany of how to move JAWS into the system tray, I know of
three methods:
- windows key + B
- jaws key + F11
- control + escape, then escape, then tab twice

If your system tray is set up like mine, you'll have a few icons in the
system tray proper, and more icons in the "overflow" area. JAWS reads the
overflow area as "notification chevron button". You have to hit space to
enter it, then you can arrow through the icons. 9 times out of 10, the
overflow area contains the icon that triggered the balloon.

Good luck.

The dell venue 8 pro ran me about 248 roughly after taxes and before the
addition of the extended warrantee. This was for a 32GB model, with an
instant savings of about $50 if I recall right. I'll go back and find more

Re: JAWS and Function keys with Dell Venue 8 Pro

Loreal Lavigna <llavigna2@...>

Thank you so much for all of your help! The trick worked. The FN key plus the escape key does indeed make my function keys work as they should normally. Not only that, it also enables particular keys on my keyboard which are not dedicated keys themselves, as this is a smaller Bluetooth keyboard with my Dell venue eight Pro. Thank you so much for all of your help! I think I'm reallygoing to love working with Windows 8.1 on my tablet, and in fact may even upgrade to Windows 8 on my desktop possibly. It will depend on a number of things, specifically whether or not I can do this and still use a couple of the programs I do for my job as a transcriptionist. Thank you again for everyone's help! I'll email again if I have anymore questions, which I'm sure I will. But I'm really loving the new technology. Can't wait to see what jaws 16 final commercial release at the end of October will have in store for windows eight users of tablets.

Re: Track Change Colors

Kimber Gardner

Hi Ed,

That's a really strange problem since word is supposed to use a
different color for each editor's changes by default.

I don't know if this will work, but try slightly changing your user
name within word so the application will think you are a different
user. According to the article I just found through google, this
should give you a different color for your changes. Here's a link to
the article.

http://word.tips.net/T003787_Using_Different_Colors_with_Tracked_Changes.html

I hope it helps.

Re: Capturing balloons

Bob W <rwiley45@...>

Hi Raymond.

No question should ever make you feel silly. Right?

I've read some fairly sophisticated proposals for capturing those pesky
balloons, but those proposals don't usually work out too good.

The best way I've found for capturing them is to look in your system tray
with the keystrokes insert+f11, or, as I recently found through another
thread on this list, the keystroke windowsKey+b. The advantage of insert+f11
is that you can do a clean right or left mouse click with it.

This won't always reveal those slippery things, but often does.

Hope this helps.

In quick settings, insert+v, there is a setting that says new line and paragraph markers. If that is on, turn it off. If the problem is with Word, press alt+h, then 8, and that should fix it.

Try control-shift-8.

Hi,

I think this is a JAWS setting problem - but - all of a sudden in one Word
document JAWS is reading "space marker" and "new paragraph".

Where is that blamed setting to shut this off?
