It's my understanding that that's the beauty of Jawskey plus windows key plus f4. it unscrambles JAWS' brain and brings it back. I love this key stroke!

I'd suspected this behavior, but moved on. Today it became inescapable. Just now, I rebooted. After JAWS was loaded and the PC was ready, I tried the combo. This time, JAWS stayed silent. However, the second time I used it, JAWS came back up again.

I'm not saying this is a problem, but I am curious if others are experiencing such a change.

I have JAWS 15, although not the latest release and Win7 64-bit.

This is a test message. I have been having trouble posting to the list so I
am sending tests from different devices to try to track the problem down.

Re: Scanner Printer

I use a multifunction scanner/fax/printer that is laser. It's a Canon and I
bought a simpler scanner/copy/printer Canon for my mom. Hers is simpler, but
both work well.

I know you're planning to buy a scanner/printer. I've heard mixed reviews
about such devices and so prefer to buy them separately. My scanner is a
Hovercam, which has a small footprint because it is a tall stand with a
camera on top that scans material placed on the surface below. It comes with
a separate floppy mat that has raised lines to indicate where to fit the
material to be scanned. The Hovercam scans extremely quickly and processes
with surprising accuracy. The scanner is lightweight and easily moved to the
side, and the mat folds up to be stored away when not in use.

With my scanner occupying a tiny part of my desk, I'm able to use a small
but fast and reliable HP P1102W black-and-white printer on a lower shelf.
Thus my desktop (the physical kind, not the virtual one) is clear for other
work.

I obtained the Hovercam from IRTI. I bought it with their software, which
made it more expensive than needed. However, I use the Hovercam with JAWS
and turn off IRTI's speech.

If you're interested, you might Google other suppliers or contact IRTI to
find out if the Hovercam and cheaper software can be configured to work with
JAWS. My guess is yes.

Yes, the Epson workforce series has a good one. The only thing is, they don't make it anymore. So you're going to have to shop around on Amazon to find it.

Fire Fox and Jaws have different hot keys. Sometimes the terminology is different to. Favourites become Book Marks etc.

I would google hot keys for FF before you do anything.

I'm using the latest version of JAWS with AIM 7.5.

It works but it's not all automatic as it used to be.

After you've signed on you'll be presented with your buddy list. Press

automatically any more but you can read them with alt 1 through 9 on the

Re: Jaws saying X Unicode?

Mike B. <mb69mach1@...>

Hi Dennis,

I don't use Thunderbird & don't know how to stop Jaws from reporting X
Unicode but, here are steps for stopping Jaws from reporting, elipsis:

1. Open the Settings Center, with, Insert + 6, on the number row, press,
control, shift, + D, to open Settings
Center default all applications.
2. Arrow down to, punctuation closed..., right arrow to open, down arrow to,
customize punctuation...., & press the spacebar to open. Make sure you
press the spacebar to open & not enter. Pressing enter will close the
Settings Center.
3. Arrow down to, Punctuation, press right arrow to open, arrow down 1 time
to, customize Punctuation..., & press the spacebar to open. Be sure to use
the spacebar to open customize punctuation because if you press enter,
pressing enter will close the Settings Center.
4. You are now in a long list of punctuation that can be modified & the
elipsis is at the bottom so, just press your end key to get there or, arrow
down through the list to see what all is there.
5. With elypsis highlighted, tab 1 time to your options / radio buttons. In
this list arrow to the, All, radio button if you want the elypsis to never
be spoken.
6. Tab to, okay, press spacebar, tab to, apply, press the
spacebar, tab to, okay, press enter to save your changes & close the
Settings Center.

Note: If you don't want this in all applications, open the desired
applications
individually & use the above steps in each application.
HTH
Take Care.

Hi yes most things are the same to call up your favorites use alt b instead
of alt a that is one thing that is different as I use both programs and
always have favorites. Yes you can when down loading Firefox you can send
all the favorites to Firefox and you don't need to find them again good luck
if you decide to use it. Ask questions if you have problems but know that I
have Firefox as my main internet browser Louise and Hawk

Mike B. <mb69mach1@...>

Hi Bill,

It's called, Navigational Sounds. Below are what sounds it covers or not:

About this Add-on
Navigational Sounds plays the following Windows Internet Explorer sounds:
- Start Navigation
- Complete Navigation (silent by default)
- Blocked Pop-up Window
- Information Bar
- Feed Discovered (disabled by default)
- Search Provider Discovered (silent by default)
- Download Completed (all downloads by default)

The Download Completed sound can be configured to play when any active
download completes or only when the last one completes.

All sounds can be turned on or off within Navigational Sounds but please
remember that the sound played is set through Windows's Sound control panel
applet
(note: Download Completed actually plays the "Windows Asterisk" sound).

New in 1.2.4: Custom sounds can now be configured through hidden preferences
(UI coming later). To use custom sounds, open "about:config" and search for
".{d8". You should see a bunch of Boolean preferences for toggling the

FYI, I recently upgraded Chrome to the latest version 37.0.2062.103 m, and
I can no longer reproduce the problem with not following links in JAWS.

Scanner Printer

Kevin Hourigan <kevinthourigan@...>

Hello People,
Off to purchase a scanner printer for the first time. Are there any pitfalls or recommendations to look for in such an item that works well with Jaws please?
Many thanks, Kevin.

Hello Anne,
Does changing the per centage of pages correct the problem, and is there a magic number to use?
Cheers Kevin.

Another thing to check is zoom. Press f6 to get to the status bar and
arrow through the zoom settings. There is one that says 'many
pages'. If that is checked, JAWS behaves strangely about page breaks.

I too have seen this behavior. JAWS sometimes does strange things
when reading by line and crossing a page break. For me, when
arrowing down, JAWS will sometimes jump to the top of the
document, as you have described, or jump to the top of the next
page, essentially skipping a page.
This only happens when reading by line. I've taken to reading by
sentence, alt plus down arrow. I never have a problem then.

I wonder if you have Word set up in print layout, which is
recommended for screenreader users.

To make sure:

1. While in Word, press alt-w for the view menu.

2. Arrow down once.

3. You should land on "print." If it isn't checked, check it.

4. I haven't gone this far, but I assume from there you tab to
Okay and press enter.

Another possibility:

If the "print" solution doesn't work for you, press F11 and see if
it takes you out of full screen mode.

I'm having my own problem with jaws and MSWord.

Whenever I get to a new page in a word document, one of two things
happens.

When I use the arrow keys to navigate, wishing to read what I've
just written, Jaws makes the sound as if I'm at the top of the
document. It won't go to the previous page unless I use the
control key.

Or...

When I'm reading through my document, if I'm arrowing to the
previous page, it jumps to the *top* of the previous page and I
have to control down arrow to get to the place I want. And if that
place is at the end of a page, I'd better use the left or right
arrows quickly to rush to my spot before Jaws leaps to the top of
the previous page again.

Any ideas? It's highly annoying when writing lengthy pieces.

Si

Firefox works very similarly to IE. I think you use much the same keystrokes and if you use the "Plain Old Favorites" addon for FF, you can easily share bookmarks between both browsers.

Re: About Buying a new laptop which works well with Jaws

Dave Durber

Adrian:

HP Laptops do not seem to What!, You do not specify.

I have an HP Laptop. Apart from their, so-called, Enhanced audio, which HP include in their OEM version of the Windows operating systems and, having the function keys, performing media functions, instead of performing the regular function key functions by default, I have no problems with the machine at all.

In some manufacturer's OEM versions of Windows, the function key default behavior can be changed within Windows. On the otherhand, some manufacturers, such as HP, who, in their infinite wisdom, exclude the ability to do this within Windows. Therefore, the only way to change the behavior of the function keys, is through the BIOS.

So, if anyone is thinking of purchasing any brand-name computer system, no matter the manufacturer,, should check with the sales representative, as to the default setting of the function keys. If the behavior of the function keys can only be made through the BIOS, if it is at all possible, make it part of the sale, to have them change the setting of the function keys to the normal function key functions, before you part with your money and take the machine out of the store or have it shipped to you. If that is not possible, either take the computer system to a reputable computer store/shop (you might or might not have to pay a fee) or, ask a knowledgeable friend to make the change. Once the setting has been changed, you do not need to worry about it any more, unless the backup lithium battery runs down completely or, it drops below the minimum voltage where the battery cannot sustain the BIOS at all.

Oh, by the way, I got round the previously mentioned audio problem on my laptop, by replacing the HP OEM version of Windows 7 Professional, with the standard Microsoft version of the Windows operating system.

HTH

Sincerely:

Dave Durber

Kadia,

Freedom Scientific won't state which hardware works best with JAWS. Based on comments I've read on this list, I'd steer clear of Hewlett-Packard laptops because they don't seem to.

You'll want to pack in as much RAM as the laptop can support.

Can I suggest that you're more likely to get a wide range of extremely useful advice if you steer clear of politics? People on this list don't seem to take kindly to non-tech opinions. We're here to help and be helped, not to argue.

Hello,
My name is Kadia, an israeli blind woman, strongly opposed to the israeli murderous regime .
My question is regarding buying a new laptop.
How do you decide which model to buy?
Do you get any specific recommendations from your Jaws dealers?
if so, what models, system requirements are you guided to buy?
If you wish to contact me directly, you can email to
terrella1000@yahoo.com

Thanks for your advice,
Regards,
Kadia
