Malware Bites with Jaws: preventing update to inaccessible version

Tim Ford

Thank you Mario for the instructions below. They worked just fine, but I found one additional step was needed for me. When in JAWS review mode, and after navigating to the checkbox I wanted to change, I had to route JAWS to PC cursor, insert and numpad minus key. That brought focus to the checkbox. If I did not do this, I could not figure out a way in JAWS review mode to change a checkbox. Am I missing something?

1.75 is the latest accessible version. you can maybe find a copy at
filehippo.com. once installed, it can be tweaked to not automatically update
only the program so you don't suddenly find it inaccessible. I'm not sure if
future malware definitions will still work with 1.75, but:

using the JAWS cursor (numpad minus), find and click on the settings tab,
updater tab, tab one time to "Download and install program update" and
uncheck this box. tab again to "notify me when a program update is ready
for installation" and uncheck this box as well.
now tab to Exit, & press enter.

Hi well if you are in email like I am the last thing before shutting down
the computer I just start there and hit windows x and then u and then u and
my computer is shut down so I'm finished and I don't have to listen to jaws
say everything. Found this the fastest and easy way to shut down my computer

I'd be happy to share it with anyone who would contact me off list, or, even

If you look on this page:
http://www.jaws-users.com/text/Shortcuts/Windows7/index.html, you can search
for the word shut and there will be a shutdown shortcut file that you could
download and after extracting it, there can be a shutdown option somewhere
on your computer. I say somewhere, because I have it on the desktop, but
others might want it elsewhere.
Just because it's win 7, does not mean, it will not work for win 8 or 8.1. I
used it on 8.1 with no problems,

Take care.

My mom just got a laptop with Windows 8.1 and Jaws 14. Is there a very
simple way to shut down like pinning the shut down feature to the start menu
or something so she doesn't have to go to the desktop and then press the
alt+f4 combination?

Thanks.

Note the spelling: Malwarebytes. One word, first letter capitalized, bytes with a y. Every single message I've received, including the University guru (sighted) who installed it when setting up my computer, got it wrong (he stuck in a capital B).

I once heard a speech where the lecturer suggested that "the problem becomes the answer." So if everybody gets the name wrong, that means the name itself is wrong. But anyway, to show off incredible competence, write it as one word with one capital. <grin>

FYI, you can find Malware Bytes Ver. 1.75 at

seems only to have the most recent edition.

Actually, for windows 7, you can just press windows key, right arrow once,
and press enter on the shutdown split button.
I happen to use a shutdown shortcut called "drop-dead" if I want to force
the system down no matter what is going on, and one named
Die gracefully if I want to do a normal shutdown.

when existing ones work perfectly well. On my Win7 machine, I press the Win
key, right arrow twice, then press r for restart, s for shutdown, etc. It's
simple, automatic and quick. The other built-in methods described in this

Thanks to everybody for this thread. I thought that it was running in the
background but it runs only when you run it. For this you need the
accessible version. Note that I have not verified that the new version is
inaccessible, only that the old one is. I'm not very happy about having to
run old software as it's always possible the newer one has other
"improvements" than the front end, but since I hadn't run a scan in a couple
years and had only one suspicious file in the recycle bin it probably
doesn't make a difference, at least so far.

Subject: easy way to shut down the PC with Jaws 14?

My mom just got a laptop with Windows 8.1 and Jaws 14. Is there a very
simple way to shut down like pinning the shut down feature to the start menu
or something so she doesn't have to go to the desktop and then press the
alt+f4 combination?

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Lauren

Mario

why not just focus to the desktop and

I used a small nifty program called autohotkey to set the windows key +
escape to restart the computer, and shift windows key plus escape to shut
down the computer.

I'd be happy to share it with anyone who would contact me off list,
or, even better, why not go to www.autohotkey.com andd learn to use
autohotkey.

Take care.

Why inhibit software updates? They come out with new versions because the
old one can't deal with the newest threats. It's a very good idea to
install all available updates as soon as they're released.
