Re: Firefox settings

Dave...

Adrian,

Yes, I usually keep the display set to simple, but I do go and change it to
screen layout when there's tabular information that would make more sense to
show row-by-row. I didn't know Firefox set the default to screen layout,
either. I'll have to go and check, now.

Soronel,

I just checked, and this is not the default setting for Firefox. Why do you
prefer screen over simple? FS's description seems to make "simple" easier
for a screenreader user, so I'm curious. If it works for you, I'd be tempted
to make the change.

The only thing I can ever recall changing is the layout mode (found

settings center), to make sure it is set to screen instead of simple.
But that may well be the default now.

Is there some particular problem you are having with Firefox? Because
for the most part it works extremely well for me.

anouncing the date incorrectly

Rob <musicmaker365@...>

Hello,
Jaws 15 is not announcing the date as it should when it is written as the example below.
Tuesday, March 25, 2014
It reads the year as second zero one four.
But if I remove the coma after the day or change the month to an abreviation, such as
Tuesday, Mar 25, 2014
or
Tuesday, March 25 2014
its like this with all the months. If I use the abreviations,
it will read corectly.
can anyone reproduce this? is there a fix for it?

Thanks,
Rob

Hi

A few months ago one of Best Buys Geek Squad helped me solve a problem I had between windows explorer and JAWS. Did a good job... with one problem. I can’t access my history list any longer when I hit ctrl-h. JAWS says ‘history’ and that is what shows up on the screen when I use the JAWS cursor. That’s all I get. It worked fine before he got his hand on my computer. Any suggestions as to how this can be remedied?
Thanks,

Hi I am a basic user of the computer and learning more each day. I have
windows 8.1 and I came from XP. I would say it depends on what you are
going to do on the computer. What I do on the computer is basic emailing
word and inter net. I did find windows 8 harder to use then windows 8.1 and
I enjoy using it. I find talking to people in all parts of life it is up to
the user and what they are willing to learn and how much you are willing to
ask for help if needed. I have joined the list to learn from others. This
is up to you and what you feel you want to do talk to people and go to
freedom web site and look for information from them and it depends on what
Jaws you have if you have the newest then it is your choice if you have an
older version you have to get windows 7. Good luck in choosing the windows
you want from Louise and Hawk.

Peter,
I had that very problem with adding a card on Amazon this morning. I
think
the web site developers at Amazon stay up nights trying to think up new
web
site controls to frustrate screen reader users. Every other site I have
dealt with used a combo box to pick the month and year, and so did Amazon
until now. They changed to Menu Buttons on the add credit card page. They

still have combo boxes on other pages though.

What I got when I activated the Menu Button for the month while in Virtual

Cursor Mode was a list of links corresponding to the months of the year.
No
matter how I tried to activate the correct link, and I tried them all, the

Menu Button still displayed the same month.

As a last resort, I turned off Virtual Cursor Mode with JAWS Key z and
activated the Button Menu again. This time I got my months in a list box.

I selected the correct month, pressed Enter and was relieved to see that
the
correct month was now displayed in the Menu Button. I then reactivated
Virtual Cursor Mode with JAWS Key z and finished the process without
difficulty. Hope this method works for you.

By the way, I'm still using the last build of JAWS 14. I was wondering if

JAWS 15 would have done better. Guess not!

Hi, Sandy. It's possible that your Internet Explorer History is set not to
keep any items in the history list.

If this is the case, going to Options while in Internet explorer should give
you a History Settings button. Check to make sure that you have one of the
options selected which will allow history to be kept for a specific amount
of time, such as one day, one week, one month, etc.

The time has come to retire my faithful old XP machine. Which of the available Windows operating systems do you folks recommend? I'm particularly interested in Jaws compatibility, but would also appreciate a less steep learning curve. I've heard Windows 8.1 is the most stable. any comparative reviews would be most welcome.

To add a new folder to be used with Word 10, I go to my lists of documents
in the libraries and do an alt-f and arrow down to where it says 'new
folder' and hit enter twice. Then I type the name in the edit. Hit enter and

you have a new folder which is accessible with Word.
Hope this helps

To add a new folder to be used with Word 10, I go to my lists of documents

you have a new folder which is accessible with Word.

I tried this last night, and it worked! Go to your one click settings and go to your payment options. You should be able to access your combo boxes.

Thanks for this ... I finally gave up and had a colleague take care of it
for me. Amazon must have changed this recently ... cause I was able to
add a card a couple of months ago ... Oh well, I will try later with the
method you used...

Peter,
I had that very problem with adding a card on Amazon this morning. I
think
the web site developers at Amazon stay up nights trying to think up new
web
site controls to frustrate screen reader users.

Guess not!

Using jaws 15

has anyone been able to add new credit cards on amazon.com? I have
tried
with either IE or FF ... can't get the expiration month and year to
properly pick from the list.

Thanks for any help...

I think I read something about this in the info on the last update to JAWS
15. If you haven't updated, you might want to try doing so. It might
actually help.

Subject: Is this a genuine bug

I raise this as something I consider to be a bug. I admit,
however, that others may think that the below-described behavior
is appropriate and useful. I cannot see how, but I admit my
limited perspective.

I cannot say this happens all the time, but it happens often
enough that I think it is a pattern in all tables of check boxes.
Since what I'm describing is a fairly common function, especially
in Webmail applications, I'm hoping someone can confirm or refute
my observations. Perhaps the problem just appears in the
particular Web applications I use.

Here is the problem:

In a number of applications a Website will display a list of items
from which the user may make selections. I find this is usually
implemented through a table. Let's use webmail as a common
example. In this table, one will find, in each row of the table,
a checkbox in the first cell, a "from" field in the next cell, the
subject in the next cell, and a "date" field in the next cell. As
I said, this pattern repeats through each row of the table.

One can, by checking the check boxes, identify, for example, the
useless email that one wants to delete, leaving the good stuff to
review. So, one can go down through the check boxes, checking the
ones for deletion and skipping the others.

This works fine after the second check box has been checked. It
is Jaws's immediate behavior after the first check box has been
checked that is at issue. Jaws, instead of leaving the virtual
cursor in the cell with the check box that has just been checked,
jumps out of the table entirely. One has to navigate back to the
check box that has just been checked to continue this checking
process.

Once the second check box has been checked, Jaws is smart enough
to stay put after checking the second check box. It is just the
first check box that throws Jaws out of the table.

I'm happy to report this to Freedom Scientific as a bug, but first
I'd like to know if others experience this in their Web
applications and, perhaps more importantly, if others see the
behavior I've described as problematic. If it is desirable in
some situations, I'm happy to remain silent.

The only thing I can ever recall changing is the layout mode (found

Is there some particular problem you are having with Firefox? Because

If the NumLock setting (found under the keyboard group in setting
