When I recently reinstalled Windows XP Pro on my computer and installed JAWS 9, the JAWS installation program did not, I repeat, did not, assign CTRL+ALT+J or, any other shortcut key combination to JAWS 9.
Likewise, when I installed JAWS 10, 11, and 12, none of the installation programs for any of those versions did not, again I repeat, did not, assign any shortcut key.
Finally, before posting my response to your last posting, I called FS Tech Support to clarify this point.
The Tech Support Representative, when I ask them if JAWS assigns a shortcut key automatically during the installation process or not, said that the JAWS
installation program does not assign any shortcut key to the newly installed
version of JAWS. They went on to say that JAWS might delete an assigned shortcut key. when you use the Repair JAWS function.

Not necessarily. Assuming JAWS 11 is the latest version installed on your
computer, it was automatically assigned the hot key Alt-Control-J when it
was originally installed. Unless you delete this "hidden" hot key, it
will always launch JAWS 11, even if you create the user-defined hot key
Alt-Control-J for JAWS 10. As a rule, hot keys automatically assigned by
an application take precedence over hot keys defined by the user. You can
use Hot Key Detective to determine whether a particular hot key is application assigned or user assigned. When I installed the demo version
of JAWS 10, Alt-Control-J, which had been created automatically when I
originally installed JAWS 9, was automatically reassigned to JAWS 10. In
order to reassign Alt-Control-J back to JAWS 9, my default version of
JAWS, I had to use Hot Key Detective to delete Alt-Control-J from JAWS 10
and then use the Properties dialog of JAWS 9 to re-create it as a user-assigned hot key.

Following your comments in your reply, I reversed the actions of my

Dave and everyone:
From what I can tell, the JAWS installation does not
automatically
assign CTRL+ALT+J, as a short cut to start JAWS.
I was using JAWS 10 at the time. As an experiment, I assigned CTRL+ALT+J, to both JAWS 10 and 11. Windows did not
complain that I

It would help, if Windows allowed only one occurrence of a
short cut
key combination to be allowed to launch a program. So, if
you tried to
assign a short cut combination that was already assigned to
a program
to another program, Windows would tell you that this was the
case and
give you another opportunity to choose another short cut
combination
for the other program.

Mike,
Not quite.
Checking the "Start JAWS automatically" just ensure that
JAWS will
start up on boot of the computer.
When installing a new version (say from 11 to 12) a
shortcut will be
added to the desktop with the version number (e.g. JAWS 12) and
it may or
may not have the Ctrl+alt+J keystroke assigned.
If you have more than one major version of JAWS (9, 10, 11,
12) you
could end up with a desktop shortcut for each, and usually the
first one
with the hotkey.
Users like Tom need to edit the shortcut preferences for
the old
version and the new to ensure that only one has the hotkey assigned.

There is no need to transfer the alt, control, + J,
keystroke. That
is the default shortcut keystroke for all versions of Jaws. What
you need to
do is go to the Jaws12 context menu / options / basics and check
the box to
have Jaws12 start automatically. By checking this box in any

Jaws, tells Jaws to use this particular keystroke as the shortcut
keystroke.
Hope this helps. Take care. Mike

What is the best way to transfer the Alt Control J

I seem to recall having a problem with this once before in

I would have thought that the "merge utilities" function

Thanks for putting up with all my questions lately.

Optimizing Display/Graphics Settings For Windows 7
Hello, everybody.
Not long after upgrading my laptop to Windows 7, I started experiencing accessibility problems when I attempted to install and use the latest version (8.3) of the Applian Replay A/V multimedia stream capture product. As a result, I've begun to wonder what the optimal display settings are for Windows 7 if one is running JAWS 11 or above. I've noticed that the various display options I can set as a user are much more refined in Windows 7, with not all of them being grouped in the same menu or part of the Control Panel as what I remember from Windows XP. For example, there is even a setting for whether I want the screen to be viewed in Landscape mode or Portrait mode--(mine was set to Landscape by default, surprisingly enough). So my main question is whether FS has published a comprehensive training guide to optimization of visual settings specifically for the Windows 7 OS.
For anyone with particular knowledge about the Applian Capture Suite: My disappointment started when I discovered that much of Replay A/V now appears to be inaccessible to me--as in when I attempt to find and select a specific Internet radio station or to order up a customized recording for a later time. The only way I've found to use this program even partially is through utilizing the JAWS Cursor; but even with this method I can't effectively search for a radio or TV station, nor can I set the start and stop time for an intended recording. In the past I've never had to use any kind of JAWS scripts for this program, nor have I seen that any were ever written. I never had to use the JAWS Cursor--just the application cursor in conjunction with Tab and Arrow keys. The Media Guide used to look exactly like a Web browser screen, and I read it easily in XP using the Virtual PC Cursor just as I would read a Webpage using Internet Explorer 8.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Kind regards,
-Kane

Hi, folks.
I have read some discussion about the need to determine whether a windows 7 machine is either 32-bit or 64-bit prior to actually installing Jaws.
I have been told that you must select either the 32-bit or 64-bit Jaws package before conducting the installation process.
Is this true?
If so, how do you make that selection from the Jaws 12 installation CD?

Thunderbird + JAWS 12 help needed
Hello
This is my first post to this list, so please bear with me as I'm not sure if this is a Jaws problem or a Thunderbird issue.
I am a sighted user trying to learn Jaws in order to help my blind husband. We have just migrated him to using Windows 7, Jaws 12 and Thunderbird. He's only been using Jaws for a few months, so it is a steep learning curve for both of us.
We are getting confused regarding the different cursors and how they work. Using Virtual PC cursor, emails are opened and read fine with a brief heading and then into the main body of the email, but the navigation short cut keys - P, N, B and F don't work. Using PC cursor, the navigation keys work fine, but Jaws announces the title of each individual email along the lines of "mailbox: ///name/users/name/AppData/Roaming/Thunderbird/profiles/ etc etc. " before getting to the message. This gets a bit tiresome when there's a full inbox to go through.
Could someone please give me some pointers as to what settings I should be using so that the title bar is not read each time and the PC cursor can be used for navigation? At the moment we are using the Virtual PC cursor, which means having to open and close each individual email when moving through a list.
I'd be grateful for any help, including advice if this has been posted to the wrong list.
Thanks Deddajay

Users like Tom need to edit the shortcut preferences for

I first deleted the CTRL+ALT+J shortcut key combination for JAWS 10 and

Dave and everyone:
From what I can tell, the JAWS installation does not
automatically
assign CTRL+ALT+J, as a short cut to start JAWS.
I was using JAWS 10 at the time. As an experiment, I assigned CTRL+ALT+J, to both JAWS 10 and 11. Windows did not

What is the best way to transfer the Alt Control J

I seem to recall having a problem with this once before in

All I remember is that I had great difficulty transferring

I would have thought that the "merge utilities" function
would have
taken care of this, but it didn't in my earlier upgrade efforts.
Thanks for putting up with all my questions lately.

Hello, everyone.
In a recent post, I believe Adrian said the following:
"Many listers have reported flaws in JAWS 12, possibly because it is more directed to Windows 7 than XP. ... I still use XP Pro, and the warnings on this list have convinced me to stay with JAWS 11, even though my SMA entitles me to JAWS 12."
The timing for this comment couldn't have been better in my case.
Although this is likely to change soon as my University switches us all completely over to Windows 7, my desktop at work is still an XP machine, and still has Jaws 11. The back-up PC I have at home is an XP machine, and that too has Jaws 11.
So, is the collective wisdom of the group to keep things as they are now on the XP machines, rather than installing Jaws 12 which seems to be geared more to Windows 7?
If this is true, you guys have just saved me some head-aches with my remaining XP computers, and I thank you sincerely for that.
I'll save my headaches for installing Jaws 12 on the new Windows 7 laptop the University will give me this week. (smile)

Hi Chris,
I am trying to report this Almahdhy A'hole to Gmail, but how do get the information they require? The help link that is provided for finding the required headers gives that dreaded " 404 message." Do you use the Internet Headers from the details page in message properties or the message source headers? All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much, take care. Mike

Not necessarily. Assuming JAWS 11 is the latest version installed on your computer, it was automatically assigned the hot key Alt-Control-J when it was originally installed. Unless you delete this "hidden" hot key, it will always launch JAWS 11, even if you create the user-defined hot key Alt-Control-J for JAWS 10. As a rule, hot keys automatically assigned by an application take precedence over hot keys defined by the user. You can use Hot Key Detective to determine whether a particular hot key is application assigned or user assigned. When I installed the demo version of JAWS 10, Alt-Control-J, which had been created automatically when I originally installed JAWS 9, was automatically reassigned to JAWS 10. In order to reassign Alt-Control-J back to JAWS 9, my default version of JAWS, I had to use Hot Key Detective to delete Alt-Control-J from JAWS 10 and then use the Properties dialog of JAWS 9 to re-create it as a user-assigned hot key.

Following your comments in your reply, I reversed the actions of my experiment, to see whether Windows reversed its action, that is, launch

I first deleted the CTRL+ALT+J shortcut key combination for JAWS 10 and

I then unloaded JAWS 10 and pressed CTRL+ALT+J and waited to see which version of JAWS would be loaded.
Well, surprise, surprise, Windows did reverse its action and launched JAWS 10 over JAWS 11.
It appears that if you assign the same shortcut key to more than one application, Windows will launch the last program to which you assigned

Dave and everyone:
From what I can tell, the JAWS installation does not automatically assign CTRL+ALT+J, as a short cut to start JAWS.
I was using JAWS 10 at the time. As an experiment, I assigned CTRL+ALT+J, to both JAWS 10 and 11. Windows did not complain that I
had assigned the short cut to two applications. I unloaded JAWS 10 and press CTRL+ALT+J and waited to see which version of JAWS would be
loaded. Well, in my example, JAWS 11 was loaded.
It would help, if Windows allowed only one occurrence of a short cut key combination to be allowed to launch a program. So, if you tried to assign a short cut combination that was already assigned to a program to another program, Windows would tell you that this was the case and give you another opportunity to choose another short cut combination for the other program.

Mike,
Not quite.
Checking the "Start JAWS automatically" just ensure that JAWS will start up on boot of the computer.
When installing a new version (say from 11 to 12) a shortcut will be
added to the desktop with the version number (e.g. JAWS 12) and it may or may not have the Ctrl+alt+J keystroke assigned.
If you have more than one major version of JAWS (9, 10, 11, 12) you could end up with a desktop shortcut for each, and usually the first one with the hotkey.
Users like Tom need to edit the shortcut preferences for the old version and the new to ensure that only one has the hotkey assigned.

Hi Tom,
There is no need to transfer the alt, control, + J, keystroke. That
is the default shortcut keystroke for all versions of Jaws. What you need to do is go to the Jaws12 context menu / options / basics and check the box to have Jaws12 start automatically. By checking this box in any version of Jaws, tells Jaws to use this particular keystroke as the shortcut keystroke. Hope this helps. Take care. Mike

Hi, again.
I just thought of one more question here.
What is the best way to transfer the Alt Control J shortcut to Jaws
12 from Jaws 11, when doing the upgrade process?
I seem to recall having a problem with this once before in earlier upgrades, and can't remember how to resolve it.
All I remember is that I had great difficulty transferring the shortcut over to the new version of Jaws from the earlier version.
I would have thought that the "merge utilities" function would have
taken care of this, but it didn't in my earlier upgrade efforts.
Thanks for putting up with all my questions lately.

In order to reassign Alt-Control-J back to JAWS 9, my default version of JAWS, I had to use Hot Key Detective to delete Alt-Control-J from JAWS 10 and then use the Properties dialog of JAWS 9 to re-create it as a user-assigned hot key.

Yesterday, if you remember, I assigned CTRL+ALT+J to JAWS 10 first and then JAWS 11. I then unloaded JAWS 10 and pressed the shortcut key combination to see which version of JAWS Windows would launch. In that instance, JAWS 11 was launched over JAWS 10.
Following your comments in your reply, I reversed the actions of my experiment, to see whether Windows reversed its action, that is, launch JAWS 10 over JAWS11.
I first deleted the CTRL+ALT+J shortcut key combination for JAWS 10 and JAWS 11.
I then assigned the shortcut key to JAWS 11 first and did the same with JAWS 10.
I then unloaded JAWS 10 and pressed CTRL+ALT+J and waited to see which version of JAWS would be loaded.
Well, surprise, surprise, Windows did reverse its action and launched JAWS 10 over JAWS 11.
It appears that if you assign the same shortcut key to more than one application, Windows will launch the last program to which you assigned the shortcut key combination, that is, the application which has the latest updated date and time stamps.

Checking the "Start JAWS automatically" just ensure that JAWS will start up on boot of the computer.
When installing a new version (say from 11 to 12) a shortcut will be added to the desktop with the version number (e.g. JAWS 12) and it may or may not have the Ctrl+alt+J keystroke assigned.

Hi, again.
I just thought of one more question here.
What is the best way to transfer the Alt Control J shortcut to Jaws 12 from Jaws 11, when doing the upgrade process?
I seem to recall having a problem with this once before in earlier upgrades, and can't remember how to resolve it.
All I remember is that I had great difficulty transferring the shortcut over to the new version of Jaws from the earlier version.
I would have thought that the "merge utilities" function would have taken care of this, but it didn't in my earlier upgrade efforts.
Thanks for putting up with all my questions lately.

Hi Karen, The old saying is that "if it ain't broke then don't fix it?. This sure applies when it comes to FS. If your current release of JAWS works for you then wait until bugs are known in the newest release. I concur with some of the comments about JAWS 13, new features would be nice but I sure wish they would fix some of the known bugs in 12 such as Excel and Access. Also, another old saying is the "KISS" principle (Keep it simple stupid) which FS might want to consider as a development stratigy. Kinda like Open Book, much too many "gizmos" to accomplish what used to be a simple task which was scan the document and translate it into a text or Word file so one could read and edit it. Oh well, JMO, Cy

(smile)

From what I can tell, the JAWS installation does not automatically assign CTRL+ALT+J, as a short cut to start JAWS.
I was using JAWS 10 at the time. As an experiment, I assigned CTRL+ALT+J, to both JAWS 10 and 11. Windows did not complain that I had assigned the short cut to two applications. I unloaded JAWS 10 and press CTRL+ALT+J and waited to see which version of JAWS would be loaded. Well, in my example, JAWS 11 was loaded.
It would help, if Windows allowed only one occurrence of a short cut key combination to be allowed to launch a program. So, if you tried to
assign a short cut combination that was already assigned to a program to another program, Windows would tell you that this was the case and give you another opportunity to choose another short cut combination for the other program.

Mike,
Not quite.

That is the default shortcut keystroke for all versions of Jaws. What you need to
do is go to the Jaws12 context menu / options / basics and check the box to have Jaws12 start automatically. By checking this box in any version of Jaws, tells Jaws to use this particular keystroke as the shortcut keystroke.
Hope this helps. Take care. Mike

Hi, again.
I just thought of one more question here.

Re: [Bulk] Transferring Alt Control J shortcut fromJaws11toJaws12
Gerald,
We shouldn't be framing this question as an argument. You're very accurate in your posts, as are those who describe the opposite experience. To me, it makes sense for FS to create the hotkey automatically because, as this thread shows, doing it on our own can be vexing. So I wonder how it is that your versions of JAWS save you the trouble while mine, for one, puts the burden on me.
The drawback of having the manufacturer create the hotkey is the possibility of conflict with an existing one. For example, your OpenBook hotkey would conflict with my Outlook hotkey.
I wonder if anyone can suggest why different systems get or don't get the automatic alt-control-j hotkey.
