VOIP Soft Phone

I'm looking for a good VOIP soft phone that plays nicely with JAWS. I've looked at several that don't.
Our system is Cisco-based here at the office. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Isn't there a way to block someone in Gmail? I have made good use of the Block Senders List in the email programs I've used. It even helps with those "Out of Office" messages that some folks send out to demonstrate their importance.

I wasn't going to post on this matter again. However, I quickly found the place to report abuse to Gmail.l.

I believe Mostafa Al'Mahdy harvested my email address from this or similar blindness-related listserves. Since he has chosen to ignore my public and private requests to not be mailed any more of his political rantings, I have reported him to Gmail. Those of you receiving similar mail may wish to do likewise.
The form at this URL requests message headers, gmail user id of the offending party, and the message body of one of the offending emails, so be sure to have that handy to paste into the right places.

Re: [Bulk] Transferring Alt Control J shortcut from Jaws 11toJaws12

Dave Durber

Karen:

Yesterday, if you remember, I assigned CTRL+ALT+J to JAWS 10 first and then JAWS 11. I then unloaded JAWS 10 and pressed the shortcut key combination to see which version of JAWS Windows would launch. In that instance, JAWS 11 was launched over JAWS 10.

Following your comments in your reply, I reversed the actions of my experiment, to see whether Windows reversed its action, that is, launch JAWS 10 over JAWS11.

I first deleted the CTRL+ALT+J shortcut key combination for JAWS 10 and JAWS 11.

I then assigned the shortcut key to JAWS 11 first and did the same with JAWS 10.

I then unloaded JAWS 10 and pressed CTRL+ALT+J and waited to see which version of JAWS would be loaded.

Well, surprise, surprise, Windows did reverse its action and launched JAWS 10 over JAWS 11.

It appears that if you assign the same shortcut key to more than one application, Windows will launch the last program to which you assigned the shortcut key combination, that is, the application which has the latest updated date and time stamps.

HTH

Dave Durber

Mike,

Not quite.

Checking the "Start JAWS automatically" just ensure that JAWS will start up
on boot of the computer.

When installing a new version (say from 11 to 12) a shortcut will be added
to the desktop with the version number (e.g. JAWS 12) and it may or may not
have the Ctrl+alt+J keystroke assigned.

If you have more than one major version of JAWS (9, 10, 11, 12) you could
end up with a desktop shortcut for each, and usually the first one with the
hotkey.

Users like Tom need to edit the shortcut preferences for the old version and
the new to ensure that only one has the hotkey assigned.

Hi Tom,

There is no need to transfer the alt, control, + J, keystroke. That is the
default shortcut keystroke for all versions of Jaws. What you need to do is
go to the Jaws12 context menu / options / basics and check the box to have
Jaws12 start automatically. By checking this box in any version of Jaws,
tells Jaws to use this particular keystroke as the shortcut keystroke. Hope
this helps. Take care.

Hi, again.

I just thought of one more question here.

What is the best way to transfer the Alt Control J shortcut to Jaws 12
from
Jaws 11, when doing the upgrade process?

I seem to recall having a problem with this once before in earlier
upgrades,
and can't remember how to resolve it.

All I remember is that I had great difficulty transferring the shortcut
over
to the new version of Jaws from the earlier version.

I would have thought that the "merge utilities" function would have taken
care of this, but it didn't in my earlier upgrade efforts.

Thanks for putting up with all my questions lately.

Yeah think that the only part of this that relates to the list is these are
from a person who has harvested addresses that is a security threat. I have

save in my junk folder the gmail report information and have sent and will
continue to send his crap to the feds. when I replied to him by accident
told him he was being reported and his answer was mentally stupid crap along

the line of next time write in english and then you can talk. must have had

typos. but this is a possible security wrisk the administraitors should
watch for his email and find how he has gotten our addresses before he
really does something more than put out this racest crap. he can do worse
things to blind and visualy impaired from the information he has gotten.

In some applications, Alt-N is used by JAWS. To get around this problem, first press JAWS key-num row 3, the JAWS command for keystroke pass through, and then Alt-N. This has worked for me.

Hello,
I have been on the list before but it has been a while. I bought a new computer yesterday and have been having fun in putting the programs on it. it was set up when I got it. I am having some problems in IE 9. when I go to download a program and I get to the option where it says to either save or run the program I cannot get it to go to save. I have had it to get to run by trying different things. in the windows Mail program I have been having some issues with writing messages. I am typing the message and when I make a mistake I arrow back to correct the problem and there is nothing there or JAWS isn’t reading it. I have tried another r screen reading program and had some issues with the brows mode. I am wondering if JAWS is now having some issues with that? I am wondering if it is the programs like windows mail, and IE 9, or is it JFW, or is it the computer. I have tried fire fox and it seems to work better with JFW than IE 9.
any suggestions would be appreciated.
Like I said, the computer is new and if there is an issue with It I would like to get it solved since I have only had it home for 2 days.
Thank you again in advance.

No. Windows is not smart enough to clear one hotkey out when it's assigned

Hi Tom,

There is no need to transfer the alt, control, + J, keystroke. That is
the
default shortcut keystroke for all versions of Jaws. What you need to do
is
go to the Jaws12 context menu / options / basics and check the box to
have
Jaws12 start automatically.

I would have thought that the "merge utilities" function would have
taken
care of this, but it didn't in my earlier upgrade efforts.

Thanks for putting up with all my questions lately.

Subject: issues with JFW on my new computer

Hello,
I have been on the list before but it has been a while.
Thank you again in advance.

a

from
JAWS 7 to 12, FS's $400 price tag for JAWS 12 from 7 looks cheap.

Full price! You mean FS doesn't even give you a break if you are already
a loyal JAWS user? So somebody who is using an older version of JAWS
like
JAWS 7 or 8 would pay the same $1000 for JAWS 12 as somebody who has
never
used JAWS before? This just doesn't seem fair.

Check with FS in the morning, but I suspect your friend would be asked
to
pay full price. I suggest waiting for the release of JAWS 13, which I
believe is anticipated in November. This way if your friend bought an
SMA
at
the same time, s/he would be eligible to upgrade to JAWS 14 without
additional charge. In addition, many listers have reported flaws in JAWS
12,
possibly because it is more directed to Windows 7 than XP. I'm assuming
someone using JAWS 7 hasn't yet switched to Windows 7. I still use XP
Pro,
and the warnings on this list have convinced me to stay with JAWS 11,
even
though my SMA entitles me to JAWS 12.

If you have more than one major version of JAWS (9, 10, 11, 12) you
could
end up with a desktop shortcut for each, and usually the first one with
the
hotkey.

Users like Tom need to edit the shortcut preferences for the old version

Hi Tom,

There is no need to transfer the alt, control, + J, keystroke. That is
the
default shortcut keystroke for all versions of Jaws. What you need to
do
is
go to the Jaws12 context menu / options / basics and check the box to
have
Jaws12 start automatically. By checking this box in any version of
Jaws,
tells Jaws to use this particular keystroke as the shortcut keystroke.
Hope
this helps. Take care.

I would have thought that the "merge utilities" function would have
taken
care of this, but it didn't in my earlier upgrade efforts.

Thanks for putting up with all my questions lately.

Karen,

No. Windows is not smart enough to clear one hotkey out when it's assigned

Dave and everyone:

From what I can tell, the JAWS installation does not automatically assign
CTRL+ALT+J, as a short cut to start JAWS.

I was using JAWS 10 at the time. As an experiment, I assigned CTRL+ALT+J,
to both JAWS 10 and 11. Windows did not complain that I had assigned the
short cut to two applications. I unloaded JAWS 10 and press CTRL+ALT+J
and waited to see which version of JAWS would be loaded. Well, in my
example, JAWS 11 was loaded.

It would help, if Windows allowed only one occurrence of a short cut key
combination to be allowed to launch a program. So, if you tried to assign
a short cut combination that was already assigned to a program to another
program, Windows would tell you that this was the case and give you
another opportunity to choose another short cut combination for the other
program.

Sincerely:

Dave Durber

Mike,

Not quite.

Checking the "Start JAWS automatically" just ensure that JAWS will start
up
on boot of the computer.

When installing a new version (say from 11 to 12) a shortcut will be
added
to the desktop with the version number (e.g. JAWS 12) and it may or may
not
have the Ctrl+alt+J keystroke assigned.

Re: [Bulk] [Bulk] [Bulk] upgrading jaws from 7 to 12

Dave...

Gerald,

Yes, even from a thumb drive if you launch the JAWS executable (e.g.
E:|\JAWS12) it will come up speaking during the install. Ditto for having
the install file on your desktop.

Starting with a CD only gives you an automatic startup when inserted.

Of course you need to take it on blind faith that you can open the Run
dialog (Windows +R) and that you know the computer has finished booting.

It's not rocket science.

I must be missing something. When you buy a new computer and set it up,
there is no speech, right? So even if you install JAWS from a thumb drive,
you still need some way to initiate the download, either with speech or with
sighted help. You don't just plug in the thumb drive, and presto, instant
speech. And I'm not sure how useful Narrator would be for this purpose.

You can install JAWS from the web version for the very first time on a

Okay, here's a dumb question. If you upgrade your SMA online, will FS

so,
how long does it take for them to send it? The FS web site doesn't make

additional charge. In addition, many listers have reported flaws in

Hello, everyone.

In a recent post, I believe Adrian said the following:

"Many listers have reported flaws in JAWS 12,
possibly because it is more directed to Windows 7 than XP. ... I still
use XP Pro,
and the warnings on this list have convinced me to stay with JAWS 11, even
though my SMA entitles me to JAWS 12."

The timing for this comment couldn't have been better in my case.

Although this is likely to change soon as my University switches us all
completely over to Windows 7, my desktop at work is still an XP machine,
and still has Jaws 11. The back-up PC I have at home is an XP machine,
and that too has Jaws 11.

So, is the collective wisdom of the group to keep things as they are now
on the XP machines, rather than installing Jaws 12 which seems to be
geared more to Windows 7?

If this is true, you guys have just saved me some head-aches with my
remaining XP computers, and I thank you sincerely for that.

I'll save my headaches for installing Jaws 12 on the new Windows 7 laptop
the University will give me this week. (smile)

Hello tom;

Yes this is true,

In order to have the right jaws installation,
One needs to no if they have a 32 bit, or 64bit machine.
I believe, if your installing jaws from a cd,
Windows7 will determine the right installation.
If your installing a download from FS, you will need to choose the right
one.

To determine whether the machine is a 32 or 64 bit machine.

1, desktop,

2 highlight computer,

3, now press alt+enter to bring up the properties.

4, route jaws to pc, and start to down arrow,
You should hear; something like,
System type,
And then 32 or 64 bit,

Another way is to, use the keystroke,
Windows+ the pause key,

Hope this helps.

Hi, folks.

I have read some discussion about the need to determine whether a windows 7
machine is either 32-bit or 64-bit prior to actually installing Jaws.

I have been told that you must select either the 32-bit or 64-bit Jaws
package before conducting the installation process.

Is this true?

If so, how do you make that selection from the Jaws 12 installation CD?

Ok, Steve. ... Thanks for the response.

I'm going to play it cool for a while here and see what other feedback I

Actually, I think my time and energy this week will be spent getting
Jaws 12 up and running on the new Windows 7 laptop the University
will be giving me, so the XP thing can wait for a bit.

Tom,

While several people have reported issues, I've not had any and I
am running XP here with Jaws 12 Pro.

Hello, everyone.

In a recent post, I believe Adrian said the following:

"Many listers have reported flaws in JAWS 12,
possibly because it is more directed to Windows 7 than XP. ... I
still use XP Pro,
and the warnings on this list have convinced me to stay with JAWS 11,
even
though my SMA entitles me to JAWS 12."

The timing for this comment couldn't have been better in my case.

Although this is likely to change soon as my University switches
us all completely over to Windows 7, my desktop at work is still
an XP machine, and still has Jaws 11. The back-up PC I have at
home is an XP machine, and that too has Jaws 11.

So, is the collective wisdom of the group to keep things as they
are now on the XP machines, rather than installing Jaws 12 which
seems to be geared more to Windows 7?

If this is true, you guys have just saved me some head-aches with
my remaining XP computers, and I thank you sincerely for that.

I'll save my headaches for installing Jaws 12 on the new Windows 7
laptop the University will give me this week. (smile)

Hello there;

Well, I'm using jaws12 latest build on windows xp, windows 7 vista, and I'm
having no real issues.
Sure, some folks are reporting issues, however, I think one needs trying the
version so they can evaluate and not always determine his or her thoughts on
someone elses opinion.

Hi,
I have JAWS 11, latest build, on both my W7 and XP laptops. 11 works fine
on
both operating systems and, yes, I am entitled to use 12 but, no thanks as
yet.
I can't wait to see what 13 will do. If it is no better than 12 then I
honestly think I am done with FS.

Yes, stick to JAWS 11 on your XP machine. Don't fix what isn't broken.
Wait
and see what JAWS 13 does.
