dave if yuou assign a short cut then do the same action again using a different version of jaws. would it not react to the last request. this would eliminate the first request of the same thing. just a thought. please advise, karen

From what I can tell, the JAWS installation does not automatically assign CTRL+ALT+J, as a short cut to start JAWS.

I was using JAWS 10 at the time.  As an experiment, I assigned CTRL+ALT+J, to both  JAWS 10 and 11.  Windows did not complain that I had assigned the short cut to two applications.  I unloaded JAWS 10 and press CTRL+ALT+J and waited to see which version of JAWS would be loaded.  Well, in my example, JAWS 11 was loaded.

It would help, if Windows allowed only one occurrence of a short cut key combination to be allowed to launch a program.  So, if you tried to assign a short cut combination that was already assigned to a program to another program, Windows would tell you that this was the case and give you another opportunity to choose another short cut combination for the other program.

Not quite.

Checking the "Start JAWS automatically" just ensure that JAWS will start up
on boot of the computer.

When installing a new version (say from 11 to 12) a shortcut will be added
to the desktop with the version number (e.g. JAWS 12) and it may or may not
have the Ctrl+alt+J keystroke assigned.

If you have more than one major version of JAWS (9, 10, 11, 12) you could
end up with a desktop shortcut for each, and usually the first one with the
hotkey.

Users like Tom need to edit the shortcut preferences for the old version and
the new to ensure that only one has the hotkey assigned.

Hi Tom,

There is no need to transfer the alt, control, + J, keystroke.  That is the
default shortcut keystroke for all versions of Jaws.  What you need to do is
go to the Jaws12 context menu / options / basics and check the box to have
Jaws12 start automatically.  By checking this box in any version of Jaws,
tells Jaws to use this particular keystroke as the shortcut keystroke. Hope

Jaws installation question for Windows 7 laptop

Hi, folks.

I have read some discussion about the need to determine whether a windows 7 machine is either 32-bit or 64-bit prior to actually installing Jaws.

I have been told that you must select either the 32-bit or 64-bit Jaws package before conducting the installation process.

Is this true?

If so, how do you make that selection from the Jaws 12 installation CD?

Well, if you buy a new computer and are setting it up for the first time,

You can use narrator to get you through the screens. Then you could install
the jaws program.

I recently put JFW on a new computer at the office.  Downloaded both JFW 1232 and 64 bit versions to a thumb drive and had it ready to load to the newcomputer.  Had our serial number - called F S to get the 20 digit number 
which they e-mailed.  Very simple operation.

I have been on the list before but it has been a while.  I bought a new computer yesterday and have been having fun in putting the programs on it.  it was set up when I got it.  I am having some problems in IE 9.  when I go to download a program and I get to the option where it says to either save or run the program I cannot get it to go to save.  I have had it to get to  run by trying different things.  in the windows Mail program I have been having some issues with writing messages.  I am typing the message and when I make a mistake I arrow back to correct the problem and there is nothing there or JAWS isn’t reading it.  I have tried another r screen reading  program and had some issues with the brows mode.  I am wondering if JAWS is now having some issues with that?  I am wondering if it is the programs like windows mail, and IE 9, or is it JFW, or is it the computer.  I have tried fire fox and it seems to work better with JFW than IE 9.
any suggestions would be appreciated.
Like I said, the computer is new and if there is an issue with It I would like to get it solved since I have only had it home for 2 days.

So, is the collective wisdom of the group to keep things as they are now on
the XP machines, rather than installing Jaws 12 which seems to be geared
more to Windows 7?

If this is true, you guys have just saved me some head-aches with my
remaining XP computers, and I thank you sincerely for that.

I'll save my headaches for installing Jaws 12 on the new Windows 7 laptop
the University will give me this week.  (smile)

Not sure if this will work, but it's worth a try;

Putting icons back into the SystemTray.

Here are some steps I wrote quite a while ago, regarding this topic to
another list.

try these steps to get your network  icon back into the system tray.

1, start menu;

2, setting/control panel;

3, t= taskbar and start menu, press enter.
If your using Xp, you just need to tab until you hear,
hide inactive icons, the box should be unchecked, so press spacebar to check

this box.
you will now see customize dialog button. The next 3 steps are for vista
users.
4, shift tab one time, you should hear,
taskbar tab.
5, right arrow until you hear;
Notification area tab.
6, tab one time you should hear;
Hide inactive icons this is unchecked, press spacebar to check.
7, tab enter on,
Icons customize....
8, now, down arrow until you hear,
Network connection,
right arrow, a combo box will open,
down arrow to show.
9, now tab, and enter on okay.

this should get your icon back into the system tray.

Dave Carlson gave you clear instructions on how to stop JAWS from
verbalizing "bulk" in this context. Yes, it's annoying, but no one's
intentionally doing it to you and the fix is so simple.

As he later says, go ahead and have your ISP reject these messages as spam.

I used to do it over the website but FS once advised me that since I'm in
the UK, taking in to account time difference, public holidays etc it wouldbe best to contact my local distributor Sight and Sound. The last time
Sight and Sound went to reset my activations they were told by FS that
they couldn't do it. I then rang FS from the UK and had a debate with the
person on the helpdesk and she reset my activation but only to 1, not 3.

I'm finding so much more that NVDA is working better with than JAWS that
now I really won't be upgrading any further with JAWS after my SMA runs
out. I also intend to take up all my issues with FS.

Hmm, they have now refused to reset mine to more than one at a time.
They claim I have had 33 activations in a few months. Can't think where
they get that figure from and very annoying. I'm in the process of
raising it as a complaint. They tried to sell me a dongle licence

use if neded, if that would give me more activations to work with.

I wasn't going to post on this matter again. However, I quickly
found the place to report abuse to Gmail.l.

I believe Mostafa Al'Mahdy harvested my email address from this or
similar blindness-related listserves.  Since he has chosen to
ignore my public and private requests to not be mailed any more of
his political rantings, I have reported him to Gmail.  Those of you
receiving similar mail may wish to do likewise.
The form at this URL requests message headers, gmail user id of the
offending party, and the message body of one of the offending
emails, so be sure to have that handy to paste into the right places.

Yes, but if Cliff has an SMA linked to version 11, he is already in a 
position where he either needs to purchase a new SMA to get version 12 (if 
it's not already too late), or pay full price to get version 12 plus SMA for 
version 13.

In other words, if he has 10 and an SMA the best he can do is 11 -- which in 
my opinion is the best version out so far.

Access user,  Ted has explained that only JAWS 10 works with it and not

This has nothing to do with JAWS or it's operations.
Information like this should be forwarded to the list owner/admins at
Jfw-owner@lists.the-jdh.com
They in turn will decide weather it needs to be posted on list.
The information is helpful, but should be coming from list owners/admins and
not the casual user.
