Hello, I see that someone gave an expired link. Are the tools hard to
find, and do they work well enough with Jaws, or are they specifically
designed with screen reading in mind? My interest for this is to read these
books on the Braille Note, and not necessarily with Jaws on the computer. I
hadn't found any info or recordings about how to convert Kinddle books into
a more accessible format, so I'm glad someone brought the topic back up.

Hello, everyone.

In a recent post, I believe Adrian said the following:

"Many listers have reported flaws in JAWS 12,
possibly because it is more directed to Windows 7 than XP. ... I still use XP Pro,
and the warnings on this list have convinced me to stay with JAWS 11, even
though my SMA entitles me to JAWS 12."

The timing for this comment couldn't have been better in my case.

Although this is likely to change soon as my University switches us all completely over to Windows 7, my desktop at work is still an XP machine, and still has Jaws 11. The back-up PC I have at home is an XP machine, and that too has Jaws 11.

So, is the collective wisdom of the group to keep things as they are now on the XP machines, rather than installing Jaws 12 which seems to be geared more to Windows 7?

If this is true, you guys have just saved me some head-aches with my remaining XP computers, and I thank you sincerely for that.

I'll save my headaches for installing Jaws 12 on the new Windows 7 laptop the University will give me this week. (smile)

Who are people like you to say how many computers an individual should own or not. For your current personal needs, you have decided that you only need one computer. So, that is fine for you.

Why a particular person needs to use more than one computer, in order to perform the functions of their job or, to run a business, is none of yours or, anybody else's business. Neither should an individual have to justify to you or, anybody else, why they need to use more than one computer, in order for them to be able to perform those functions.

If you had bothered to read the JAWS license Agreement, you would have discovered, under the section titled, "COPYING THE PROGRAM", the last sentence of the first paragraph reads,

The Licensee may install and use the program on more than one machine, but only one machine may be used at a time.

*** End quotation from Jaws License Agreement ***

It is Freedom Scientific, which has decided that up to three activation codes are granted to an individual user. This has not been specifically stated in the JAWS License Agreement. Freedom Scientific has granted this number of activation codes for a personal licensed user, as a discretion, not a right. So, therefore, Freedom Scientific, can and may, vary this count, with, or without notice.

But how can you install JAWS for the first time from the FS download site on a new computer if you don't have speech to begin with? Obviously, you have to be able to visit the FS download page and locate the JAWS download link, which would require speech or sighted help. Am I missing something?

You can install JAWS from the web version for the very first time on a new
computer. I've done this more than once. The CD is not required, as long as
you know your authorization code. Have you written it somewhere in a very
safe place?

Don't you need the installation CD to install JAWS on a new computer for the

I now have JFW 12 on my computer and am running windows 7. I was wondering about eudorah. if they still have a free mail program and do they have a version that works with Windows 7?
I used to use it back in the days of Dos.

be prepared to spend $750 in order to not only update jaws to version 12, but also include in that the sma. I hope that this helps. If you plan to use windows 7, i'm not sure if the cost is more or may you may already have the pro version of jaws. I'll check on that part of things on Monday when i talk to someone at Freedom Scientific, They will be able to tell me if this is true or not.
