Re: Eudora (was another question about programs that work with JFW)
Bill, While Eudora lives on in open-source, the last version produced by Qualcom is Eudora 7.1.0.9 and that version is very accessible with JAWS, something that I do not believe is true of the newer open-source versions. Happily, Eudora 7.1.0.9 works fine with Windows 7 and Qualcom has graciously provided the following code to unlock the full mode without cost: RegFirstNamePro= Paid_Mode_No_Support RegLastNamePro=Without_X1_Search RegCodePro=4352-4846-7641-3881 You may download Eudora from * http://www.eudora.com/cgi-bin/export.cgi?productid=EUDORA_win_7109Ben

David,
No need to call. Win 7 Home Premium uses Jaws home or pro, Win 7 Pro or Ultimate requires Jaws Pro.

If you're upgrading, then you obviously have Jaws on your computer. So download the latest version to a flash drive with your current machine. You can easily plug that in to your new computer and navigate to Jaws with Narrator.

I used to do it over the website but FS once advised me that since I'm in the UK, taking in to account time difference, public holidays etc it would be best to contact my local distributor Sight and Sound. The last time Sight and Sound went to reset my activations they were told by FS that they couldn't do it. I then rang FS from the UK and had a debate with the person on the helpdesk and she reset my activation but only to 1, not 3.
I'm finding so much more that NVDA is working better with than JAWS that now I really won't be upgrading any further with JAWS after my SMA runs out. I also intend to take up all my issues with FS.

Hi, all.
I'm between computers here, and have a question about Jaws activation counts.
I know I could call FS about this, but figured I might get a quicker answer from the list.
Regarding activations, does a single-license Jaws user like myself have
a given number of activations for each separate version of Jaws, or is the allotted number of 3 activations constant across all versions of Jaws collectively?
I am getting a couple of new computers set up for both office and home, and
am trying to figure out how best to proceed, while still keeping an older Windows XP machine around as a back-up in case that is needed as well.
I have Jaws 12, but a few earlier versions of Jaws that I could probably use if neded, if that would give me more activations to work with.
Thanks!
Tom from Michigan

Re: [Bulk] [Bulk] upgrading jaws from 7 to 12
There's the sighted assistant option. Also, a new JAWS purchaser might be a disgruntled customer of another speech software company and could use that program to navigate the FS site.
Still, having the FS DVD would be helpful. There's much more on it than you get when you download the application. And, as I mentioned before, the authorization code disc is a big help.

Re: [Bulk] [Bulk] upgrading jaws from 7 to 12
But how can you install JAWS for the first time from the FS download site on a new computer if you don't have speech to begin with? Obviously, you have to be able to visit the FS download page and locate the JAWS download link, which would require speech or sighted help. Am I missing something?

This way if your friend bought an SMA at the same time, s/he would be eligible to upgrade to JAWS 14 without additional charge. In addition, many listers have reported flaws in JAWS 12, possibly because it is more directed to Windows 7 than XP. I'm assuming someone using JAWS 7 hasn't yet switched to Windows 7. I still use XP Pro, and the warnings on this list have convinced me to stay with JAWS 11, even though my SMA entitles me to JAWS 12.

Re: Convert Kindle Books Programs!
Matthew Bullis <matthewbullis@...>
Hello, I see that someone gave an expired link. Are the tools hard to find, and do they work well enough with Jaws, or are they specifically designed with screen reading in mind? My interest for this is to read these books on the Braille Note, and not necessarily with Jaws on the computer. I hadn't found any info or recordings about how to convert Kinddle books into a more accessible format, so I'm glad someone brought the topic back up. Thanks a lot. Matthew

The advantage of the authorization code CD is that inserting it into the CD/DVD drive streamlines the authorization process. No need to type in those tiresome twenty digits.

Dave and everyone:
From what I can tell, the JAWS installation does not automatically assign CTRL+ALT+J, as a short cut to start JAWS.
I was using JAWS 10 at the time. As an experiment, I assigned CTRL+ALT+J, to both JAWS 10 and 11. Windows did not complain that I had assigned the short cut to two applications. I unloaded JAWS 10 and press CTRL+ALT+J and waited to see which version of JAWS would be loaded. Well, in my example, JAWS 11 was loaded.
It would help, if Windows allowed only one occurrence of a short cut key combination to be allowed to launch a program. So, if you tried to assign a short cut combination that was already assigned to a program to another program, Windows would tell you that this was the case and give you another opportunity to choose another short cut combination for the other program.
Sincerely:
Dave Durber

Mike,
Not quite.
Checking the "Start JAWS automatically" just ensure that JAWS will start up on boot of the computer.
When installing a new version (say from 11 to 12) a shortcut will be added to the desktop with the version number (e.g. JAWS 12) and it may or may not have the Ctrl+alt+J keystroke assigned.
If you have more than one major version of JAWS (9, 10, 11, 12) you could end up with a desktop shortcut for each, and usually the first one with the hotkey.
Users like Tom need to edit the shortcut preferences for the old version and the new to ensure that only one has the hotkey assigned.

Hi Tom,
There is no need to transfer the alt, control, + J, keystroke. That is the default shortcut keystroke for all versions of Jaws. What you need to do is go to the Jaws12 context menu / options / basics and check the box to have Jaws12 start automatically. By checking this box in any version of Jaws, tells Jaws to use this particular keystroke as the shortcut keystroke. Hope this helps. Take care. Mike

Hi, again.
I just thought of one more question here.
What is the best way to transfer the Alt Control J shortcut to Jaws 12 from Jaws 11, when doing the upgrade process?
I seem to recall having a problem with this once before in earlier upgrades, and can't remember how to resolve it.
All I remember is that I had great difficulty transferring the shortcut over to the new version of Jaws from the earlier version.
I would have thought that the "merge utilities" function would have taken care of this, but it didn't in my earlier upgrade efforts.
Thanks for putting up with all my questions lately.

Re: upgrading jaws from 7 to 12
be prepared to spend $750 in order to not only update jaws to version 12, but also include in that the sma. I hope that this helps. If you plan to use windows 7, i'm not sure if the cost is more or may you may already have the pro version of jaws. I'll check on that part of things on Monday when i talk to someone at Freedom Scientific, They will be able to tell me if this is true or not.

Re: [Bulk] upgrading jaws from 7 to 12
Gerald,
On your second point, no, I've been using the same authorization code for several versions and SMAs.
On your first point, I hesitate to guess twice on the list in one day, but you seem to be assuming someone would be contacting FS for the first time. I don't recall if the website is set up for initial sales, but I imagine most first-time purchasers would contact FS by phone or their local distributor.

Okay, here's a dumb question. If you upgrade your SMA online, will FS send you an installation CD for the version of JAWS you are upgrading to? If so, how long does it take for them to send it? The FS web site doesn't make this clear.

Gerald went to the FS website and corrected what I was careful to say was a guess. If you count the cost of SMAs for those of us who stayed current from JAWS 7 to 12, FS's $400 price tag for JAWS 12 from 7 looks cheap.

Full price! You mean FS doesn't even give you a break if you are already a loyal JAWS user? So somebody who is using an older version of JAWS like
JAWS 7 or 8 would pay the same $1000 for JAWS 12 as somebody who has never used JAWS before? This just doesn't seem fair.

Hello, everyone.
In a recent post, I believe Adrian said the following:
"Many listers have reported flaws in JAWS 12, possibly because it is more directed to Windows 7 than XP. ... I still use XP Pro, and the warnings on this list have convinced me to stay with JAWS 11, even though my SMA entitles me to JAWS 12."
The timing for this comment couldn't have been better in my case.
Although this is likely to change soon as my University switches us all completely over to Windows 7, my desktop at work is still an XP machine, and still has Jaws 11. The back-up PC I have at home is an XP machine, and that too has Jaws 11.
So, is the collective wisdom of the group to keep things as they are now on the XP machines, rather than installing Jaws 12 which seems to be geared more to Windows 7?
If this is true, you guys have just saved me some head-aches with my remaining XP computers, and I thank you sincerely for that.
I'll save my headaches for installing Jaws 12 on the new Windows 7 laptop the University will give me this week. (smile)
Tom in Michigan
