When updating you MUST destroy your personal settings folder

Lee Maschmeyer

Hi folks,

At the behest of a friend I waded through my deleted messages folder on the subject of 14.0.9002. I was shocked and distressed at all the problems people have had.

Whenever I hear of anyone with problems after updating I ask, Did you remember to destroy your personal settings folder after the update? It is a weakness in the update process that we are not forced to do this or, at the very least, assaulted with fire bells and police whistles. This can be a very necessary step, especially in areas undergoing active development like Word, IE and Firefox. Skipping this step can result in trying to run a mix of scripts from several versions and they might not work well together.

Personally I skipped this step too as it's a pain in the arts and crafts, but if I do skip it I know that I could very well be shooting myself in the foot and if I begin to encounter problems I'll destroy that folder forthwith. It will be recreated by changes I make in the Jaws window and Settings Center.

When I say "personal settings folder" I mean the one that's stored in, for example (using Windows 7):

c:\users\<myid>\AppData\roaming\Freedom Scientific\Jaws\14.0

If anybody has destroyed this folder and still has problems please let me know. I haven't noticed any problems, but I don't use Word heavily or Firefox at all.

Good luck,

--

Hello All,

Is there a way to disable JAWS verbosity when going over a cross-reference item within a word document?

I hope I make sense, otherwise I post a sample word document later.

You might copy and paste it into notepad, edit it, then move it back to
Word.

Yes my computer is messed up and I'm promised that it will be replaced, but
in the mean time all of a sudden all my documents are being saved as read
only. I tried renaming one only to have it turn up read only. I also
copied and pasted it into a new document. Any ideas? Judith

Re: read only

Judith:

This solution will only work, if you have used very basic format commands, such as pressing the ENTER key twice to separate paragraphs and CTRL+ENTER, to insert forced page breaks.

If you have used a number of MS Word's format commands to format your documents, the likelyhood is that they will be lost, if you were to highlight an entire document or part of a document, copy to the clipboard, then paste into Notepad. I would stronly advise you not to use this suggestion, unless you are forced to do so.

As I said in my previous posting on the subject, The permanent solution, is to find out why your files are being saved as Read-Only files, then change the setting in MS Word, to prevent it from happening in the future.

Sincerely:

Dave Durber

Judith:

Access the properties for a particular file. If JAWS tells you that the Read-Only attribute, is partially set, tap the SPACE BAR and JAWS should tell you that the Read-Only attribute, is unchecked. Tap the SPACE BAR again, to check the file to be Read-Only.

That's a good old DOS command that probably goes back to the beginning of
the IBM PC. It's been around since at least DOS 3. It sets the archive bit
on or off, and determines whether a file is read-only or editable. Plus
turns the attribute on, dash turns it off.

You mean the attrib command?. I think it's something like attrib -R *.doc,
or whatever the extension may be.

It may be possible to uncheck all files using tanmsdos command like xcopy. I
don't remember how, but you might find the way through Google.

Hello Judith,

You will probably have to go into the properties for each file, and
uncheck "read only" on the general tab until you can get your computer
replaced. As far as I know, there is no global way to make all files
save as not read only. that must be aggravating to have happen.

Good luck,
Mike

I think the easiest way to do this is to select the document you want to
attach from your documents list, copy it the clipboard, and then paste it
into the body of the new e-mail your sending. It will automatically be
attached. Hope this helps.

Hello all,

I am fairly new when it comes to outlook 2010. I am still learning and
one
thing I haven't come across yet, but it is bound to happen sooner or
later,
is how to attach a document to an email within outlook 2010. How is this
done? Thank you in advance for any information -Andrew-
