Re: Jaws 14.0.9002 Update Direct Download Link

Ariel

Downloaded the update earlier today, but I had to go back to the previous installation I had. The biggest issue I found was in Word. It was reading only by sentences. When I tried to read by paragraphs, it would only say, "Blank." When I would navigate from one paragraph to the other, it would say, "Tab." I am beginning to think that JAWS is going backwards instead of forward. Heh, JAWS 12 works a lot better than 14. Accessibility in Chrome is also broke. I know they haven't done much to supported, but it was a lot better with JAWS 12 than it is with 14.

Of course, I know that JAWS 15 has been released, but as a Windows 7 user, I

Hi Drew,
To open the desktop version of internet explorer from the start screen:
1. Open the desktop version of Internet Explorer from the desktop, and on
the Tools menu choose Internet Options.
2. On the programs page of the dialog, the first two controls are:
- A choose how you open links combo box. By default it is let to Let
Internet Explorer decide. Set this to always in Internet Explorer on the
desktop.
- An Open internet Explorer tiles on the desktop check box, which is not
checked by default. If you check this, then if you open Internet Explorer on
the Start Screen, or Apps screen or in the list of search results, then the
desktop version of Internet Explorer opens.

Punctuation

Adrian Spratt

I'm posting this discovery in case others haven't already made it. The last time I recall JAWS punctuation settings being discussed on this list, I believe the consensus was that any permanent change had to be done via a voice profile, an incredibly cumbersome method for such a basic setting. Another JAWS user was told by an FS rep that punctuation changes made in the quick settings dialog in JAWS 14 are now permanent. I've tested it by making the change, then closing the application, then rebooting, and it's true: The change I made stays in effect.

So, the steps are:

1. Open the quick settings dialog with insert-v.

2. Either tab or down arrow once to get outside the search box. I find waiting a moment before doing this step ensures the entire dialog is displayed.

3. Press p until JAWS speaks "punctuation."

4. Press the spacebar until the desired punctuation level (some, most, etc.) is spoken.

5. Tab three times to OK. Press spacebar to confirm.

Incidentally, the search box within this dialog is a nice feature that I hadn't noticed before. If you know what you're looking for within quick settings, typing the key word here takes you right there.

Thanks for the suggestions. The word document is edited by a number of

something in Word 2003 which is causing JAWS to practice its French language
skills.

I don't have any idea why from a technical aspect, but, I have noticed that
on some wikipedia pages, jaws will read in various languages when there is
text on the page in whatever language that is part of the info. I often
search for music lyrics and one song had a history of being a traditional
swahealey (spelling?) song and jaws automatically switched to swahealey. I
would actually like to use jaws to brush up on my French but just haven't
got much time outside of work and singing in the chorus to practice my
French. I am just guessing that there must be coding jaws recognizes that
makes it switch to another language and depending on what version of word
you are using and where the document came from, jaws is being triggered to
go into French.
The only other guess would be a bug causing it to just randomly do that, and
I would contact Freedom Scientific to see if they can help with a repair or
reinstallation.

I'm also using a Braille Display along with JAWS but this continues to

Does anybody have any thoughts as to why JAWS may suddenly start

When installed there is a option in the preferences where you can enabel a screen reader friendly version. TeXNicCenter also work with the MiKTeX package if you need to convert TeX files to PDF etc.

Re: narrator

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

I'll try the F8 next time. Right now Windows won't fully start, and I have no idea what happened. One of the choices I get is going into Safe Mode, and that's how I get there, by just cursoring down and hitting Enter. I've had some dandy crashes in my time with no long-lasting effects, and this happens out of nowhere. . ., just goes to show. Our IT person here at the office has given me three potentially viable solutions.

Yes, the proper driver depends on what hardware your system has. I
forget the exact wording but it's one of the options on the safe mode
menu (and thus completely inaccessible).

Soronel, if I may ask, how is the safe mode started where you can select
which drivers you want?

And which driver(s) are for sound, I guess it depends on which onboard chip

is built into the computer, right?

In default safe mode I am pretty sure the answer is no, because there
is no sound available.

There is a safe mode available that lets you choose which drivers to
enable, and you can enable sound that way but that would require
having a seeing eye human available anyway. And if you were to do
that then jaws would most likely work too.

While we're on this (and I wouldn't throw it in, except I really need to
know), does Narrator work in Safe Mode? I know the big-boy readers (like
our very own JFW) won't work, but I could really use just a little
feedback.

Hi,

The default voice for Narrator is a male voice. I am not sure which it
is,
or how to change it. I have not used Narrator very much. Just in have to
cases.

Also, with Windows 7 will the narrator voice / speech be Anna as I
