Mike,

Not quite.

Checking the "Start JAWS automatically" just ensure that JAWS will start
up
on boot of the computer.

When installing a new version (say from 11 to 12) a shortcut will be added
to the desktop with the version number (e.g. JAWS 12) and it may or may
not
have the Ctrl+alt+J keystroke assigned.

If you have more than one major version of JAWS (9, 10, 11, 12) you could
end up with a desktop shortcut for each, and usually the first one with
the
hotkey.

Users like Tom need to edit the shortcut preferences for the old version
and
the new to ensure that only one has the hotkey assigned.

Hi Tom,

There is no need to transfer the alt, control, + J, keystroke. That is
the
default shortcut keystroke for all versions of Jaws. What you need to do
is
go to the Jaws12 context menu / options / basics and check the box to have
Jaws12 start automatically. By checking this box in any version of Jaws,
tells Jaws to use this particular keystroke as the shortcut keystroke.
Hope
this helps. Take care.

Hi, again.

I just thought of one more question here.

What is the best way to transfer the Alt Control J shortcut to Jaws 12
from
Jaws 11, when doing the upgrade process?

I seem to recall having a problem with this once before in earlier
upgrades,
and can't remember how to resolve it.

All I remember is that I had great difficulty transferring the shortcut
over
to the new version of Jaws from the earlier version.

I would have thought that the "merge utilities" function would have
taken
care of this, but it didn't in my earlier upgrade efforts.

Thanks for putting up with all my questions lately.

Re: Transferring Alt Control J shortcut from Jaws 11 to Jaws 12

Hi Tom,

I have 4 versions of Jaws installed on my computers. What I do is, use the
alt, control, + J, shortcut keystroke for the version i have loading at
startup, which is my preferred version, which is Jaws10 n my case. I then
assign different shortcut keystrokes to the other 3 versions. For example;

Jaws10 shortcut keystroke version that loads upon startup, alt, control, +
J.

Jaws6 shortcut keystroke, alt, control, + 6, on the number row above the
main keuyboard.

Jaws11 shortcut keystroke, alt, control, + 1, on the number row above the
main keyboard.

Jaws12 shortcut keystroke, alt, control, + 2, on the number row above the
main keyboard.

Hope this helps. Take care.

Tom,

I've always found it advantageous to re-create this shortcut for any new
version. Like many JAWS users, I have a few versions on my system because
later ones broke what previously worked. Each time I install a new version
(i.e., 10, 11, 12), I assign the j shortcut to it and reassign other
shortcuts to older versions.

Re: Transferring Alt Control J shortcut from Jaws 11 to Jaws 12

Dan Kerstetter <dhk457@...>

As far as I know, you can't transfer it. You'll need to remake it by going to the JAWS 12 submenu. Find the item that says JAWS. Right click using either your applications key or shift f10 and arrow up to properties and press enter. You'll be on the shortcut tab. Tab till you hear shortcut key none and press j then enter. That should do it.

transfer it?
Well, hit alt+enter on the Jaws 11 icon on your desktop, tab until you're in the shortcut key hotkey field and delete it. Then bring up the same properties for the Jaws 12 icon with alt+enter and input the hotkey you want to use to launch it, ctrl+alt+enter for example.

Personally, I have a hotkey for either so I can load 11 for some tasks and 12 for others.

Why does anyone need more than one or two computers for personal use? The people who run into problems with their activation counts seem to own a zillion computers. This is absurd. Any blind computer user who owns more than two computers deserves to be scrutinized by FS.

Steve, a small objection from one who has requested new activations only
twice in nearly two decades. Agreed, requesting a lot of activations could
indicate usage outside the terms of our agreement with FS. However, it's
clear that many people here need activations for reasons to do with the
number of systems they have, the hardware upgrades they install, the
occasional mistakes they make, and so on. FS has a right to protect its

Hi, all.

I'm between computers here, and have a question about Jaws activation

I know I could call FS about this, but figured I might get a quicker
answer from the list.

Regarding activations, does a single-license Jaws user like myself
have a given number of activations for each separate version of Jaws,
or is the allotted number of 3 activations constant across all
versions of Jaws collectively?

I am getting a couple of new computers set up for both office and
home, and

am trying to figure out how best to proceed, while still keeping an
older Windows XP machine around as a back-up in case that is needed as
well.

I have Jaws 12, but a few earlier versions of Jaws that I could
probably use if neded, if that would give me more activations to work
with.

Thanks!

Hi, again.

I just thought of one more question here.

What is the best way to transfer the Alt Control J shortcut to Jaws 12 from
Jaws 11, when doing the upgrade process?

I seem to recall having a problem with this once before in earlier upgrades,
and can't remember how to resolve it.

All I remember is that I had great difficulty transferring the shortcut over
to the new version of Jaws from the earlier version.

I would have thought that the "merge utilities" function would have taken
care of this, but it didn't in my earlier upgrade efforts.

Thanks for putting up with all my questions lately.

Hi Tom,

There is no need to transfer the alt, control, + J, keystroke. That is the
default shortcut keystroke for all versions of Jaws. What you need to do is
go to the Jaws12 context menu / options / basics and check the box to have
Jaws12 start automatically. By checking this box in any version of Jaws,
tells Jaws to use this particular keystroke as the shortcut keystroke. Hope
this helps. Take care.

Hello again, everyone.

However, I have one more question about the activation process:

If I upgrade from Jaws 11 to Jaws 12 on a computer that already has Jaws 11,
does the upgrade count against my number of available activations? In other
words, each time I upgrade from Jaws 11 to 12, do I loose an activation?

Thanks!

I agree with your words about David and his help. I have not used any of his help yet, but I probably will in the future. As you said, nice to have have a knowledgeable person close by, and one who wants to helpalso.
