Re: New windows 8 laptop and Jaws

Hi,
I recommend waiting for JAWS 15, provided you have an SMA count which covers up to 15. The big question to be answered though is the stands from FS regarding activation count once people upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 this month (hope they don't take away your activation, otherwise I expect confusion from many).
Cheers,
Joseph

Hi all,
I meant to say that the laptop was a Toshiba not an HP... Anyway, should I wait for Jaws 15, or get Jaws 14? And either way, will there be a free upgrade, or will I have to pay, and if so, how much?

Hi,

Jaws 15 and so on.

Good luck, but you will first need to go up to Jaws 14 or wait till Jaws 15
is out so you don't have to pay that extra upgrade fee.

It's the last PC laptop I buy.

Hello all,
My wife and I just bought a Windows 8 HP laptop, and I was wondering how
accessible Jaws 11 was with Windows 8? I've kinda been away from the Windows
and Jaws for awhile, only using them here lately on occasion.
A friend and I were thinking about upgrading to Jaws 14 or 15, I think I
heard it was coming out soon?
Any assistance on all of this would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks, Shane. Sent from my iPhone

It looks like some folks don't bother to take the time to go through the Basic Training that is available with JAWS. It doesn't seem very efficient to me to get screen reader training one question at a time on an email list.

Judith,

I believe you succeeded in locating the JAWS training programs. To understand the service center, you should look at the relevant one, perhaps a basic training one. In addition, I think there is one specifically on the text analyzer.

For the record, you reach the service center by pressing JAWS key+6 on the number row above the letters. But if you don't read about it, you will be posting many more basic questions here.

All:
I'm a little late to this thread, but for documents where mine is the last
computer to touch it (e.g., my sighted secretary won't see it, I give the
document a once through with Text Analyzer.
Text Analyzer picks up runs of spaces, i.e., where there are two or more
spaces (except after periods), open quotes without a lose quote, indenting,
open parens without a close, font and attribute changes, and so on.

Formatting can be a problem with documents such as articles or term papers,
but being clued into your screen reader and hearing prolonged pauses and
shorter lines is helpful.

JAWS Manager (Ins-F2) contains 18 or 19 menu categories. Settings Center
takes the place of the old Configuration Manager, and is really easy to use.
JAWS Manager is where you find Dictionary Manager, Script Manager and a host
of other goodies.

Yes, settings center. I was typing too quickly. But as I wrote, the correct
keystroke to invoke the settings center is JAWS key+6 on the number row.

I share Ted's dislike of Text Analyzer. I find it ridiculously slow. Since
spelling and, if you want it, grammar check cover most mistakes, and spacing
is readily handled by search-and-replace, there's usually no need to suffer
its painstaking progress.

I know the keystrokes to check the formatting on my manuscripts. Often they
are so long that a few errors crept in like blank spaces after the last word
on a line that I wish something would fix for me, but I've learned to listen
better and hear the errors. Judith

Judith,

I believe you succeeded in locating the JAWS training programs. To
understand the service center, you should look at the relevant one, perhaps
a basic training one. In addition, I think there is one specifically on the
text analyzer.

For the record, you reach the service center by pressing JAWS key+6 on the
number row above the letters. But if you don't read about it, you will be
posting many more basic questions here.

Formatting can be a problem with documents such as articles or term papers,

JAWS Manager (Ins-F2) contains 18 or 19 menu categories. Settings Center takes the place of the old Configuration Manager, and is really easy to use.
JAWS Manager is where you find Dictionary Manager, Script Manager and a host of other goodies.

Text Analyzer picks up runs of spaces, i.e., where there are two or more
spaces (except after periods), open quotes without a lose quote, indenting,
open parens without a close, font and attribute changes, and so on.

Formatting can be a problem with documents such as articles or term papers,

When I shift tab to the senders email address and left arrow, I will be

Phil:
Word 2013 and the envelopes issue you asked for someone to do, well, the
comp froze there for me, lol, I had to restart the comp 3 different times!

The first outlook issue, I did not see any add to outlook contact when
routing jaws to pc and performing a right mouse click. The last outlook
issue you asked about, I pressed alt 1 and jaws echoed the persons
name/email address. Pressing alt 1 twice, yielded no results for me, which
made me go whaa?

I said whaa? Because in outlook 2010, I was able to alt 1 twice quickly,
left arrow to focus on the email address, evoke the context menu and down
arrow to add to outlook contacts and press enter. Now that isn't working
for me lol!
Ok, before I decided to send this response, I went and did the add to
outlook contacts thing and it worked but not the way I wrote above when
referencing 2010 and here is what I had to do.
I had to shift tab to the senders email address, pressed left arrow to place
focus on the the email address, then I pressed the applications key and add
to outlook contacts was there.
Lol, in 2010 it was so much easier! Maybe I am just impatient and hate
shift-tabbing lol.

Hi.

Would some kind person verify if the following problems exist on their
computer under office 2013 and either jaws 14 or 15 beta and let me know?

I just want to make certain this is a jaws problem, and not something to do
with my configurations.

Under Word 2013, press alt+m to get to the mailings tab. Press tab once to
envelopes. You should land on the delivery address. Please type anything,
and then see if jaws will read it using either say current line or whatever.

Second, in outlook 2013, open a message. Shift tab to the senders name,
route jaws to pc, and then try a right mouse click using the keyboard. Arrow
down and see if "add to contacts is listed as one of the choices.

Also, with a message open, try pressing alt+1 twice to bring focus to the
senders information. Try pressing say line.

I would really appreciate it. I am trying to teach a client how to use
outlook 2013, and we keep running into these types of problems.

Thanks

Phil

Avast requires booting into safe mode for uninstalling. This while possible if installing a registry hack to enable sound in safe mode, will be quite daunting for the novice user.

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

It's part of JAWS, check under Settings Center.

How do you get Text Analyzer? Is it software or can you download it? Is it very compatible with jaws? Judith

All:
I'm a little late to this thread, but for documents where mine is the last computer to touch it (e.g., my sighted secretary won't see it, I give the document a once through with Text Analyzer.
Text Analyzer picks up runs of spaces, i.e., where there are two or more spaces (except after periods), open quotes without a lose quote, indenting, open parens without a close, font and attribute changes, and so on.

Unfortunately sometimes Jaws is not that sensitive when it comes to spacing in manuscripts. I haven't spell checked a complete novel on my new computer yet, but I hope jaws 14 can pick up the spacing problems that XP did.
Formatting can be a problem with documents such as articles or term papers, but being clued into your screen reader and hearing prolonged pauses and shorter lines is helpful.

HI there I just did an experiment and typed a sentence with a few extra spaces between words but spell check did not show the spaces as a problem.
I had typed a document and jaws did not indicate wrong spacing but I could see it with my braille display.
I just could not fix it for some reason.

Hi there. This worked but is there some way of knowing if you
have
some funny spacing in your document?
FOr the sighted apparently there is a icon to tell you of this.

I believe you can get a free upgrade if the new upgrade comes out 60 days before the date of purchase

Hi,

I find I can do what I absolutely need to do though it can be more

spend the extra money for an Apple because soon I'll have to put out for
Jaws 15 and so on.

Good luck, but you will first need to go up to Jaws 14 or wait till Jaws 15
is out so you don't have to pay that extra upgrade fee.

It's the last PC laptop I buy.

Sincerely,

Lauren

Hello all,
My wife and I just bought a Windows 8 HP laptop, and I was wondering how
accessible Jaws 11 was with Windows 8? I've kinda been away from the Windows
and Jaws for awhile, only using them here lately on occasion.
A friend and I were thinking about upgrading to Jaws 14 or 15, I think I
heard it was coming out soon?
Any assistance on all of this would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks, Shane. Sent from my iPhone

I can't say for sure. I'd call Freedom Scientific and ask if I were you.
I'd think sense it's so close to the next release you'd be automatically
upgraded but I could be entirely wrong so it's best to ask. As for access to
windows 8, the desktop environment works just fine. The new interface still
needs some work although that's not just with Jaws from what I understand.
It's in the mainstream as well. It's going to take time to get what's
essentially a new platform up to the standards of what we're used to.
