Re: Looking for an accessible Anti- Virus Program

Adrian Spratt

Mike,

One caveat. When I had Vipre, my computer slowed down dramatically and I had to uninstall it, at which my computer returned to normal. No one else has posted with the same problem, so I assume it was just my particular system and bad luck. I had the same problem with Norton Antivirus before that.

But as you say, Vipre is very highly rated. I hope there's a trial option for anyone interested.

Meanwhile, I remain convinced that the MSE scare is a false one. MSE is also highly rated, hasn't slowed down my system and is free.

I don't mean to jump in on your question, but Vipre products can be found at
www.threattrack.com, and they will have the latest version available for
download. They have several products, and I use Vipre Internet Security,
because it offers mor protection than the Vipre Anti Virus. But, the
2013 version is the latest, and when installed, it will automatically update
everything to today's latest threat definitions, etc. This is the best
protection I have ever owned for my computers, and is well worth the money.
I have not had a virus in years. So, there you go. Mike

Avast requires booting into safe mode for uninstalling. This while
possible

According to the CNET download page for the free version of Threatfire, it has been discontinued:

CNET Editors' note: The product ThreatFire has been discontinued by PC Tools and is no longer available for download or use. Download.com offers no downloadable

Re: Looking for an accessible Anti- Virus Program

Michael Boyd <mikeboyd61@...>

I have used Vipre Internet Security for years. It costs around $100, but it is well worth the money. You don't have date to pay a fee every year to renew the software, because it is good for the life of the computer. When next year's version is released, you upgrade to it for free. Also, the virus threat definitions update automatically throughout the day, so you are always up to date with the latest protection, and I really like that it doesn't interupt you to tell you that it is updating, it just does it. You can purchase Vipre products from Threat Track.com. I also use Malware Bytes in conjunction with Vipre for added malware protection, and the free version of it works just fine. However, free antivirus softwares such as AVG and others like it, just don't do a good job, in my opinion. Good luck in your search. Mike

Distinct? I think MSE is very distinct right now. LOL! But seriously, if
MS was considering discontinuing MSE, they would not have included it in
Windows 8.1, where it is known as Windows Defender.

OK, we need to wrap this up, because this is not the right place to be discussing this particular subject. An avi file is a video file format, and a mp3 is an audio file format. itunes will not handle a video file. What you need to do is find yourself a video file converter software. There are lots of them out there. Prism Video File Converter is one of the best, and you can find it on the NCH Software web site (www.nchsoftware.com). They charge money for their products, but you can download a trial version for free. Give it a try. I don't use an iPhone, so I don't know what video file formats it will play, but you should be able to figure that one out. Then, if it doesn't work for you, you need to look elsewhere for a fix to your problem. One of the other guys responding to your posts suggested a good site. I didn't bother to remember it, but you can look back through your responses and find it. Good luck.

I don't know if it is a video or not. Here is what i'm trying to do, i download a season of a tv show from blind mice and i'm trying to uplaod it into itunes but it does not show up like other files i have downloaded in the past. So i check the file type and it said avi.

Keep in mind that MP3 is a compressed format, so it cannot be converted to
one that isn't, such as .wav.

Frankly, this thread has lost me. But if anyone is looking for an
accessible
program that can convert files to different audio formats, one popular one
is GoldWave, which many people have without realizing this is one of its

After the post that triggered this MSE thread, I spoke to a computer

What is not that good' about AVG?

Avast requires booting into safe mode for uninstalling. This while
possible
if installing a registry hack to enable sound in safe mode, will be quite
daunting for the novice user.

Thanks much.

Re: Looking for an accessible Anti- Virus Program

Adrian Spratt

I agree, and you make a good point. For the record, I think the person who said "distinct" meant "extinct."

After the post that triggered this MSE thread, I spoke to a computer security expert who dismisses the significance of the claims. I don't want to get him involved, so I offer this for what it's worth. But it seems clear that the evidence favors MS's continued support of MSE.

Distinct? I think MSE is very distinct right now. LOL! But seriously, if
MS was considering discontinuing MSE, they would not have included it in
Windows 8.1, where it is known as Windows Defender.
