Re: Important: Disabling Application Mode in Jaws 10?

Kim and Mike,

I hope this method works on these websites. When I used JAWS 10, I found
solutions inconsistent. On Yahoo Finance, for example, I had to locate the
toggle link for applications mode to turn it off.

For me, the problem was completely eliminated in JAWS 11. I can't speak for
all webpages, but I've never encountered applications mode after JAWS 10.

I'm finding so much more that NVDA is working better with than JAWS that

Hmm, they have now refused to reset mine to more than one at a time.
They claim I have had 33 activations in a few months. Can't think where
they get that figure from and very annoying. I'm in the process of
raising it as a complaint. They tried to sell me a dongle licence

Hi, all.

I'm between computers here, and have a question about Jaws activation
counts.

I know I could call FS about this, but figured I might get a quicker
answer
from the list.

Regarding activations, does a single-license Jaws user like myself have
a
given number of activations for each separate version of Jaws, or is
the
allotted number of 3 activations constant across all versions of Jaws
collectively?

I am getting a couple of new computers set up for both office and
home,
and

am trying to figure out how best to proceed, while still keeping an
older
Windows XP machine around as a back-up in case that is needed as well.

I have Jaws 12, but a few earlier versions of Jaws that I could
probably
use if neded, if that would give me more activations to work with.

Thanks!

Tom from Michigan

I am really sorry, but I don't have a clue! You can try Keyboard Help, Jaws
Key + 1, on the number row, & play around with keystrokes to try & find it
or, wait until someone comes along with the correct keystroke. Take care.

there aren't a lot of things to fix, about the only main one that a lot of folks do is to:
deselect all items on the desktop by hitting alt and spacebar. hit the applications key, select customize, find the themes tab and select "classic theme"

and that's only if you find the fact that in the standard windows 7 themes the desktop is permanently in the alt tab sequence.
that is about all the changes it makes.

I have a collection of stuff for beginners on windows 7 on my web site:
http://grabbag.alacorncomputer.com

there is a starting package with some text tutorials and a list of audio tutorial sites like blind geek zone and blind cool tech in it.

there is also my helpful hints notes that will tell you what there calling things now (such as add/remove programs is now called programs and features) and fixes for problems folks have had, and the "where did they put ...? questions we all have during the switchover.

fairly much I'd say that 90% of the questions that might be asked are in this folder, its called windows 7 helpful notes, and is the link just below the starting out kit download link.

I then rang FS from the UK and had a debate with the person on the helpdesk and she reset my activation but only to 1, not 3.

I'm finding so much more that NVDA is working better with than JAWS that now I really won't be upgrading any further with JAWS after my SMA runs out. I also intend to take up all my issues with FS.

Hmm, they have now refused to reset mine to more than one at a time. They claim I have had 33 activations in a few months. Can't think where they get that figure from and very annoying. I'm in the process of raising it as a complaint. They tried to sell me a dongle licence instead.

They are nice, but don't ask more than once every few months. If you're down

Hi, all.

I'm between computers here, and have a question about Jaws activation
counts.

I know I could call FS about this, but figured I might get a quicker
answer
from the list.

Regarding activations, does a single-license Jaws user like myself have a
given number of activations for each separate version of Jaws, or is the
allotted number of 3 activations constant across all versions of Jaws
collectively?

I am getting a couple of new computers set up for both office and home,
and

am trying to figure out how best to proceed, while still keeping an older
Windows XP machine around as a back-up in case that is needed as well.

I have Jaws 12, but a few earlier versions of Jaws that I could probably
use if neded, if that would give me more activations to work with.

Thanks!

Tom from Michigan

The Windows7 interface

The Windows7 interface is brand new to those who are accustomed to
Windows XP but, in my opinion, it's so much easier to access and
follow. If you don't mind bearing with me, I can give you a look/feel
and a overview of how the start menu works.

The menu consists of several elements.

. Instant Search Edit Field

. A List of frequently accessed locations

. A toolbar

. List of applications

. An "All Programs" button

Instant Search

When you first open the Start menu, focus is placed in the Instant
Search field. You can type text into this field to quickly locate a
program, document, email, website in your history and more. If you
want to open WordPad for example, type, "wordpad" without the quotes
and focus is immediately placed on WordPad. You can press ENTER to
launch the application.

Focus within the Instant search field is unique. It always has focus.
Even
if you use the UP AND DOWN ARROW to navigate among the search results,
press BACKSPACE and you remove the last letter you typed. Press any
letter and it's added to your search term. You can use the UP AND
DOWN ARROW at any time to review the search results.

Clear the results and return to an empty Instant Search field at any
time with ESCAPE.

Take some time to experiment with this first feature and I think
you'll find it's much more intuitive than slogging through menus.

Pinning Items to the Start Menu

If you find an application you use a lot, you can pin it to the start
menu.
After locating it with instant search, press the WINODWS APPLICATION
KEY and locate the option to "pin to start menu." Activate the option
and the application is appended to the top of the Start Menu. When
you open the start menu, just press UP AND DOWN ARROW to navigate among
the items.
Press
ENTER on a pinned item to launch the item.

You can unpin items in the same manner. Focus on a pinned item and
open the Windows Application menu. Activate "unpin from Start Menu"
to remove the item from the Start Menu. The item is removed but you
can always find it using Instant Search.

You can pin documents, email, applications, web sites and more to your
start menu. It's a pretty powerful feature of Windows 7.

Frequently Accessed Locations

Use TAB once from within the Instant Search Field to locate a list of
frequently used locations. Use UP AND DOWN ARROW to navigate among
the options. Press ENTER to launch the associated item.

Toolbar

Press RIGHT ARROW once from within the Instant Search and the shut
down option is located. Press ENTER to shut down your computer. For
additional options, press RIGHT ARROW once more. This opens a list of
options that includes lock, log off, restart and more. Press ENTER on
any of these items to activate them.

All Programs

The All Programs button is just above the Instant Search. Press UP
ARROW to focus on it immediately. Press ENTER on the option to
display a list of all the applications on your computer. Much like
the original XP menu.

Press ENTER to expand a folder and review its contents and ENTER to
launch an item.

Close the list and return the instant search field at any time with
ESCAPE.

Jump Lists

Windows 7 features a new feature called Jump Lists. If you have
multiple documents open in an application, you can locate these
documents in the start menu.

For example, I have word pinned to my Start Menu. If I have five
documents open in word, I can focus on Word in my Start Menu and tap
the RIGHT ARROW KEY to display a list of open documents. UP AND DOWN
ARROW navigates among the documents. I press ENTER on my choice and
focus moves to the document
immediately. I like this much better than using ALT-TAB to move among
all
my documents and open applications.

The Windows Taskbar also has jump lists and additional features that I
find irreplaceable and a wonderful improvement to the operating
system.

What I have heard is that Windows Live Mail is closest to Outlook

So, I'll probably start with the Live Mail option.

The trick will be synchronizing it with my personal G-mail account.

If you have any thoughts on how to gget Windows Live Mail, and how to

Hello sir;

Not sure if you no this,
However, there's one decision you will need to make and that is, What
email client will you use, since windows 7 doesn't come with a email
client built in.

You have choice, windows live mail which is free, MSoutlook 2007 or
2010 in fact even 2003 would work, also thunder bird, which I no
nothing about.
These are just a few.

Hello there;

The easiest way is to,

1, go to start menu, you will hear, search box edit, Type in, theme,
you then will hear; Change the theme press enter.
Now you have landed in the list of themes,

The trick is now to find the classic theme, You will need to use
your arrow keys,

Once you hear jaws announce classic theme, press enter, you should
hear a sound, signifying the change, now alt+f4,

This is mostlikely the easier way,
This can also be done through the personalized items.
Through the desktop.

Hope this helps.

Actually?

Things should work fine right out of the box.

The only change you may want, is to set the theme to classic, thus
taking the Desktop out of the alt+tab cycle.

Other wise?
Things should work just fine,
And really no need to navigate since you can find things through
the search edit within the start menu.

inthane <inthaneelf@...>

there aren't a lot of things to fix, about the only main one that a lot of folks do is to:
deselect all items on the desktop by hitting alt and spacebar. hit the applications key, select customize, find the themes tab and select "classic theme"

and that's only if you find the fact that in the standard windows 7 themes the desktop is permanently in the alt tab sequence.
that is about all the changes it makes.

Important: Disabling Application Mode in Jaws 10?

Kim Loftis <kll2277@...>

Hi All,

On many pages using Jaws 10 and XP Pro, I'm running into the "app mode on" message from Jaws. This is happening particularly with PayPal and on my Wordpress site dashboard when editing content there. When I run into this issue, it's pretty much impossible to access a page and issue any commands, enter any text, etc.

Is there any way to keep "app mode" from appearing, even temporarily. I desperately need to get these website pages edited, and this is giving me a real headache.

Any tips, suggestions or fixes would be tremendously appreciated!

Many thanks in advance!

Warmest,

Hello there;

If you're having problems with adobe X try the following;

1, open adobe X,

2, press ctrl+k=preferences,

3, now press the letter "g"=general,

4, now tab and
Uncheck,
Enable Protected Mode at startup

There are other things to try, let's start with this.

iTunes don't look back

For others on the list, blind tunes is back and running again with a stable release using iTunes 10.4. So you don't need to revert back quite yet. I finally fixed the focus issues plaguing many. You can download the latest here:

Subject: Re: [Bulk] ITunes again

I'm probably late on this, but hopefully you haven't deleted your iTunes library yet. There is a longer way to restore an earlier version of iTunes, but it involves a bit more work. I posted this to another list and it is long, so here it is.

I won't make any guarantees, but I've included a step-by-step guide for
reverting to an earlier version of iTunes. This guide is for going back
from 10 to 9, but everything should be applicable for going from 10.4 back
to 10.2.2. . But, you should save your iTunes library and apps which are
backed up under your My documents\my music folder in Xp, under Documents
music in Vista, and under My Music in Windows 7. The folder will have your
music, and the apps you have purchased.

Several users who are dissatisfied with the new iTunes interface or other
enhancements, or are experiencing problems with third-party add-ons or other
issues may seek to downgrade to iTunes 9.2.1. Here's the procedure:

Mac: If you have a Time Machine backup, simply use it to restore your iTunes
9.2.1. Otherwise, follow these instructions:

First, delete the following files

.The iTunes application in /Applications
.com.apple.iTunes.plist, which is located in ~/Library/Preferences (this is
the library folder inside your user folder)
.iTunes.pkg, which is located in /Library/Receipts (this is the library
folder at the root level of your startup drive)
.iTunesX.pkg, which is located in /Library/Receipts
Next, download iTunes 9.2.1 for Mac OS X and run the installer.

You may then need to recreate your iTunes library.

Windows

1.Go to C:\My Documents\My Music. Backup the entire "iTunes" folder to a
safe location.
2.Using the Control Panel to uninstall the following: Apple Application
Support, iPhone Configuration, iTunes 10, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple
Software Update and QuickTime.
3.Reboot your computer
4.Go back to C:My Documents\My Music\iTunes
5.Rename the file iTunes Library.itl to something like iTunes
Library.itl.backup.
6.In the same folder, open "Previous iTunes Libraries" and find the most
recent library backup, which should be named something like "iTunes Library
2010-09-1.itl" Copy this file, then paste it in C:My Documents\My
Music\iTunes and rename it iTunes Library.itl
7.Download either iTunes 9.2.1 for 32-bit or iTunes 9.2.1 for 64-bit
(depending on your system configuration) and install the software.
8.You may then need to recreate your iTunes library.
http://appletoolbox.com/2010/09/how-to-downgrade-itunes-10-to-itunes-9-2-1/
Re-creating the iTunes Library file

Note: After re-creating your library, any devices that you sync with iTunes
(Apple TV, iPod, iPhone, iPad) will see your iTunes library as a new library
and will completely resync. The next sync with such a device will take
longer and may reset some options since your rebuilt library isn't familiar
to the device.

1. Quit iTunes.

2. Locate your iTunes folder (this is the folder that contains the iTunes
Library and iTunes Library.xml files).

Operating System Default location of iTunes Folder
Mac OS X /Users/[your username]/Music
Microsoft Windows XP \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My
Music\
Microsoft Windows Vista \Users\[your username]\Music\
Microsoft Windows 7 \Users\[your username]\My Music\

3. Open your iTunes folder.

4. Drag the "iTunes Library.xml" file to the Desktop. If the "iTunes
Library.xml" file is not available, learn how to add files back to the
Library (because the "iTunes Library.xml" file is not available, playlists
and other information will not be available).

5. Drag the following file from your iTunes folder to the Trash:

Mac OS X "iTunes Library"
Microsoft Windows "iTunes Library.itl"

6. Open iTunes.

Important: Do not add any content into iTunes at this point (such as by
purchasing something from the iTunes Store).

7. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.

8. Navigate to the "iTunes Library.xml" file on the Desktop.

Mac users: Click Choose.
Windows users: Click Open.
If your Podcasts list in iTunes is empty after following these steps, learn
how to add them back into iTunes.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Kimsan,

Stick with 10.3 and just delete the library file from your My Documents
folder. Mine was in the "My Music" subfolder.

ITunes will just create a new library file when you next launch it.

Loreal and Nickus are successful in using 10.4 on their systems with or
without the scripts, but most of the beta testers have had serious problems
with 10.4 and the latest scripts on Windows 7 in particular. That's why I'm
steering you away from that for now. Like me, you want to use ITunes, and
not test new script code.
