Mike,

This is going to go nowhere fast. We're in a third-party conversation -- you
are passing along what someone else is picking up from yet another someone
else.

Have them cut to the chase and join the list directly and not work through
two levels of intermediaries, and we may get some useful data and give some
useful help.

Yes, Karen we are indeed a useful group.

Hi Ted & Dave,

Apparently it worked at 1 time & I'm only getting bits & pieces of what's
actually going on. Here is the last tidbit I received:

yes that is correct, mean that he can type and it comes out ok but
that JAWS isn't echoing it

So, I've asked him to check his typing & screen echo settings. Also, to
look at his display settings in the control panel & to make sure there
aren't any unwanted toolbars installed / showing. I can't recall what other
suggestions I've made but, nothing has helped yet.

Take care.

Hi All,

An acquaintance is having the following problem. Can anyone help?
Good morning I seem to be having some difficulty with Microsoft Word 2007.
Not able to read anything I type in the document, internet, or my email. I'm
using Jaws 11.0 and Windows Vista.
I've even maximized the window with no success, even performed a repair.
What am I doing wrong, and could someone help me solve the problem?
It would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

a question onb spotify blind and windows 8

wsallander@...

Has anyone tried using SpotifyBlind on a windows 8 machine?

If so, what other settings need to be done with either Spotify or at least Jaws 14.

I’ve tried it on my machine but seemed not to work at all.

Re: looking for some help on how to use the Windows7 voice Recognition program with jaws

Jimmy Jones

I've been playing around with the recognition just lately. There is very
little setup evolved in using it. And it seems to work well with the
MS-Windows programs on the computer. Not so much with other ones though. For
example, I was able to perform an Internet search using the recognition with
IE8 on GOOGLE. However, I went into another program and although it would
let me use the menus, it would not let me dictate in the edit fields.

Hope this helps

Re: Two questions. One, should I be using a desktop picture, and two, about not having a mouse.

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

I had a cool baseball screen saver back in 98 that worked flawlessly. When I tried the aquarium in XP, though, wow! I felt a little better when a sighted friend told me she couldn't use it either without rebooting. I have noticed occasional problems coming out of lockdown mode here at the office with 13 and 14, especially the former. We consider it highly unadvisable to go on break and leave the screen active. JAWS 13 sometimes wouldn't properly wake up, and I have to either blow a password, or force a cold reboot.

Alan,
When we were still sending smoke signals to and fro there was a thing called a "screen saver". This was because a fixed image could burn into the old TV and monitor screens so this screen saver changed the image in order to protect the TV type screens. At that time those screen savers did cause havoc with JAWS but I honestly can not remember how far back that was in JAWS versions.
I am not even sure it was on XP, might have been Win98.
That is the only problem which comes to mind.

Hi list,
I am using a Win 8 computer, JAWS 14. With a lot of help from Microsoft accessibility folks, I have everything running pretty smooth.
I do have a couple of questions. I am in a weather group, and my wife found a really neat picture for my desktop, showing different thunderstorms, and we had it set up to change scenes every thirty minutes. The person that I talked to at Microsoft’s accessibility didn't believe that having it on my desktop, would cause any problems, and it didn’t cause any.
But, after talking to someone at FS, they recommended not using it.
Do any of you have any thoughts, or does anyone use a desktop picture?
Also, what about using the computer without a mouse. How easy is it to get out of something without the mouse? Would it be possible with just the JAWS mouse? I hope I phrased that right.
Thank you for any suggestions.

touchscreen support.

Pretty anemic, in my opinion. They still have not fixed the Outlook
2007
Calendar issue that locks up the system when using Alt+Up/Down arrow.
Sigh.

Re: JAWS 14.0.3005 - Comments

Dave...

Gerald, as long as you're not tabbed into a particular day, let's say
focused on an appointment at 9:30 AM, it does work fine. but try it when you
are focused on a particular time and it will crash.

It only works if you are focused on the weekday itself and not on an actual
appointment.

Hi
Adrian,

Thanks for the resources. I will definitely check them out. So much to learn and adjust to. As for Windows 8 bbeing like Vista, well, time will tell all.
It sure is different, but performance wise I have had no problem so far. I also switched to a laptop, and that's what was on everything. But I will certainly spring for some tutorial materials this time around. Thanks so much.

Jean,

I was very sorry to read you'd broken your wrist in an earlier post, and I hope you recover soon.

I recommend CathyAnne Murtha's textbooks on Outlook, Word and Windows operating systems and David Bailes' materials on Windows operating systems.
If I sound less than specific, it's because I used their materials on Office
2010 (CathyAnne) and Windows 7 (CathyAnne and David). Both have since published guides for Windows 8, and CathyAnne has new textbooks on Outlook
2013 and Word 2013.

I made the switch just as 2013 was being released and before I could get reliable opinions about its accessibility. I have since read in various places that it is very accessible, possibly more even than Office 2010, which I am now used to. However, I'd been advised by visually impaired and sighted users alike to avoid Windows 8. Marketing numbers show that Windows
8 is getting the reception that Vista did, while Windows 7 should endure the way XP did.

CathyAnne charges for her textbooks, but they are thorough and well thought out. David's explanation of Windows 7 added information I didn't find in CathyAnne's books, and vice-versa. David and his organization do not charge.

CathyAnne's website is
http://www.google.com/search?site=&source=hp&q=cathyanne%2C+ati&oq=cathyanne
%2C+ati&gs_l=hp.3...1068.12967.0.13692.16.15.1.0.0.0.99.999.15.15.0...0.0...
1c.1.12.hp.kTkl2H79MCA

David previously posted links to his three Windows 8 guides on this list.
They are as follows:

Start screen guide:

Search pane guide:

Taskbar guide, which covers the taskbar buttons and the notification area:

My faithful old PC finally died, and I have just made a major upgrade. I would appreciate hints, tips, and/or tutorials and resources relating to the following upgrades.

Outlook Express to Outlook 2013. I'm struggling with this change. E.g., I'm typing this but can't read back my text. Help with views, settings, contacts, etc., please.

Word 2003 to Word 2013. Haven't looked at this yet, but I expect major changes.

Windows XP to Windows 8. Wow. Are there any recommended settings here?

Again, any getting started tips are most appreciated. More later . Still recovering from a broken wrist, so my typing tolerance is limited here.
Please understand if I don't reply immediately.

Jean
