I've been playing around with the recognition just lately. There is very

little setup evolved in using it. And it seems to work well with the MS-Windows programs on the computer. Not so much with other ones though. For example, I was able to perform an Internet search using the recognition with IE8 on GOOGLE. However, I went into another program and although it would let me use the menus, it would not let me dictate in the edit fields. Hope this helps Jimmy

Re: Two questions. One, should I be using a desktop picture, and two, about not having a mouse.
Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)
I had a cool baseball screen saver back in 98 that worked flawlessly. When I tried the aquarium in XP, though, wow! I felt a little better when a sighted friend told me she couldn't use it either without rebooting. I have noticed occasional problems coming out of lockdown mode here at the office with 13 and 14, especially the former. We consider it highly unadvisable to go on break and leave the screen active. JAWS 13 sometimes wouldn't properly wake up, and I have to either blow a password, or force a cold reboot.

Subject: RE: Windows 8 and Office 2013 help Hi Adrian, Thanks for the resources. I will definitely check them out. So much to learn and adjust to. As for Windows 8 bbeing like Vista, well, time will tell all. It sure is different, but performance wise I have had no problem so far. I also switched to a laptop, and that's what was on everything. But I will certainly spring for some tutorial materials this time around. Thanks so much. Subject: RE: Windows 8 and Office 2013 help Jean, I was very sorry to read you'd broken your wrist in an earlier post, and I hope you recover soon. I recommend CathyAnne Murtha's textbooks on Outlook, Word and Windows operating systems and David Bailes' materials on Windows operating systems. If I sound less than specific, it's because I used their materials on Office 2010 (CathyAnne) and Windows 7 (CathyAnne and David). Both have since published guides for Windows 8, and CathyAnne has new textbooks on Outlook 2013 and Word 2013. I made the switch just as 2013 was being released and before I could get reliable opinions about its accessibility. I have since read in various places that it is very accessible, possibly more even than Office 2010, which I am now used to. However, I'd been advised by visually impaired and sighted users alike to avoid Windows 8. Marketing numbers show that Windows 8 is getting the reception that Vista did, while Windows 7 should endure the way XP did. CathyAnne charges for her textbooks, but they are thorough and well thought out. David's explanation of Windows 7 added information I didn't find in CathyAnne's books, and vice-versa. David and his organization do not charge. CathyAnne's website is http://www.google.com/search?site=&source=hp&q=cathyanne%2C+ati&oq=cathyanne %2C+ati&gs_l=hp.3...1068.12967.0.13692.16.15.1.0.0.0.99.999.15.15.0...0.0... 1c.1.12.hp.kTkl2H79MCA David previously posted links to his three Windows 8 guides on this list. They are as follows: Start screen guide: http://goo.gl/Kepxd Search pane guide: http://goo.gl/wnKaZ Taskbar guide, which covers the taskbar buttons and the notification area: http://goo.gl/LnNCP -----Original Message----- From: Jfw [mailto:jfw-bounces@...] On Behalf Of Jean Menzies Sent: Wednesday, May 15, 2013 5:18 PM To: JAWS; JAWS Subject: Windows 8 and Office 2013 helpp My faithful old PC finally died, and I have just made a major upgrade. I would appreciate hints, tips, and/or tutorials and resources relating to the following upgrades. Outlook Express to Outlook 2013. I'm struggling with this change. E.g., I'm typing this but can't read back my text. Help with views, settings, contacts, etc., please. Word 2003 to Word 2013. Haven't looked at this yet, but I expect major changes. Windows XP to Windows 8. Wow. Are there any recommended settings here? Again, any getting started tips are most appreciated. More later . Still recovering from a broken wrist, so my typing tolerance is limited here. Please understand if I don't reply immediately.
