Cy,

Only problem I ever have is with hibernate. Standby mode works just fine.

I notice that as of Windows 7, what we used to call standby, is now called
sleep. So I can say with complete confidence that my laptop (see the specs
below) with Windows 7 32-bit has absolutely no problems with JAWS, any
versions from 12 onward, coming out of sleep mode.

If there are problems, they may be related to using different hardware.

What I meant to say was that, some versions ago putting your computer into

Doing it was a major "no no". I wonder if the old bug has reemerged?

Subject: Re: MS Word 2010 and JAWS

Hi, Adrian,

I will put my answers with the questions.

1. I know that to center a heading, I press control-e on that line.
However, when I check the column number with insert-3, JAWS reports
column 1 for the first letter. Is the heading centered anyway? If
yes, how can I get JAWS to report where it actually appears on that
line of the print page? If when reading font information with
insert=f JAWS says 'alignment centered', then it is. Pressing
alt-delete will tell you how far it is from the left edge and from
the top, but not from the right. and the left measurement includes
the margin. So if you have a one-inch left margin and you're in the
first column and first line, the report will be 'one inch from left, one inch from top'.

2. Is there a way to report progress along lines in terms of inches
instead of column numbers? Yep. Alt-delete (see above)

3. I know you can change indents on the left and the right, but only
separately. Is there a single command to indent a paragraph the same
distance left and right? WordPerfect has the single keystroke F7 to
accomplish this. Not that I know of.

4. Is it possible to have JAWS speak a paragraph symbol when reading
character by character? In the JAWS settings center, I've set JAWS to
read symbols in this mode, but it isn't picking up paragraph signs.
Press alt-h, then 8, then enter. It's a toggle, so the same key
strokes will turn it off.

5. I know I can find a paragraph sign by searching with the term ^p.
I tried searching for two paragraph signs in a row with ^p^p and
replacing them with another string. However, Word treated this search
as including single paragraph signs and replaced every one. How can I
tell Word I want it to locate only instances of double paragraph signs?
You can do this in the find dialog, press the more button and tab to
I
think special.
If that's what you did, then maybe it doesn't work any more. But I
used to do it a lot for documents with whimsical line breaks.

6. I wanted to substitute a new keystroke for the control-f find command.
However, I can't find that particular command in Word's list of
keystrokes, nor even in the JAWS keyboard manager (insert-6). The
control-f find command isn't always cooperative. Use alt-e, then f
to get a whole find dialog.

Good luck!

Answers to any of these questions would be greatly appreciated.

Cy,

One caution -- I think that if you ultimately decide to take the leap from
JAWS 11 to let's say 13, 14, or 15, you might want to do so one version at a
time. I recall that stepping over versions is problematic with regard
authorization.

Hi Cynthia,
Great.
There was a period of time when devices added on the USB ports would hose up
the authorization but I have not had any problems over the past several
months.
I am still using JAWS 11 as each time I think about upgrading I read
comments about things which still work on 11 that no longer work and then
are fixed only to be broken again.
Hopefully by the time 15 comes out 14 will be stable and I will upgrade -
maybe?

Subject: Re: MS Word 2010 and JAWS

Hi, Adrian,

I will put my answers with the questions.

1. I know that to center a heading, I press control-e on that line.
However, when I check the column number with insert-3, JAWS reports
column 1 for the first letter. Is the heading centered anyway? If yes,
how can I get JAWS to report where it actually appears on that line of
the print page? If when reading font information with insert=f JAWS
says 'alignment centered', then it is. Pressing alt-delete will tell
you how far it is from the left edge and from the top, but not from the
right. and the left measurement includes the margin. So if you have a
one-inch left margin and you're in the first column and first line, the
report will be 'one inch from left, one inch from top'.

tried searching for two paragraph signs in a row with ^p^p and
replacing them with another string. However, Word treated this search
as including single paragraph signs and replaced every one. How can I
tell Word I want it to locate only instances of double paragraph signs?
You can do this in the find dialog, press the more button and tab to I
think special.

Use alt-e, then f to
get a whole find dialog.

Good luck!

Answers to any of these questions would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully by the time 15 comes out 14 will be stable and I will upgrade -
maybe?
