No problem, Dave. I should have checked my saved JAWS discs before posting
from memory. It's nice to know that in this case, memory didn't fail me. As

If I remember correctly, I purchased an SMA when I upgraded to version 4.5

version 7, which is when I next had to upgrade my SMA.

Soronel and Dave,

I hate to clutter the list with an obscure point, but for the record,
you're
right, Soronel. Dave's message finally prompted me to get off my computer
chair and walk to the room where I keep my relevant JAWS discs. They are
JAWS 6, 13 and 14. JAWS 6 has the extra CD and the brailled authorization
code. I'm confident this was the first release with the then new JAWS
authorization system because I've been buying JAWS since version 2.

The authorization disc makes authorizing simple. I hope FS would supply
replacement authorization discs to anyone who has neglected to keep it.

I went to register JAWS yesterday and made a startling and annoying
discovery. In order to register and license your copy of JAWS using
the Internet License Management facility, you need an authorization
number which, according to Freedom Scientific's FS activation page, in
both print and braille on the sleeve of the installation program CD.
OH yeah? Then the dots must be hidden, and the print is either
white-on-white or black-on-black, because nobody in my house, blind or
not, could find such a thing, and we looked on two different versions
that came in two different packages.

I suspect that what's really going on here is that somewhere, way back
when I first got JAWS with the serial number I'm currently using,
which was new for version 4.0 which was the first one to run on
Windows NT and above, the box it came in definitely did have an
authorization number on a stick-on braille label. Of course, 4.0 is
long, long ago, and so is the packaging in which it came. Since then,
I'm sure when updates come out, they are delivered directly from the
company that stamps out and packages the distribution CD's, so they
can't possibly be personalized with your very own authorization
number. If that's correct, where are we supposed to find this thing?
Inquiring minds wanna know, and answers will be gotten tomorrow
morning when FS technical support opens for business.

This is the big mystery question. I have encountered things over the
years that have broken my authorizations such that I had to wind up
getting a dongle to solve one annoying problem, such as adding memory
or even adding a driver for a USB device which, when connected,
changes the machine's footprint ID, making JAWS think it's a different
machine. I am now faced with a computer that has as much memory in it
as it's going to get, but with one out of two possible installed
drives. I'll turn on the other drive, which is a BIOS tweak, before
proceeding with the following. I am planning on installing two more
drives which will be attached to a SATA controller card which I will
also be installing. I'm wondering which of these things will break my
authorization, causing me to have to get yet another ILM key, which I
don't want to do if I can avoid that hassle. So, should I just put
everything into the machine that's going to be put into it, then
authorize, or should I authorize first, then install the hardware if
doing that won't change the machine's ID?

Hi John

Microsoft Works has always amazed me why it does not work. I am not
sure if it is still shipped with new computers these days but I know
it always used to be. I have a version of it on this 3 year old hp
windows 7 laptop.

I would ideally like the office suite but the amount I would use it
really
does not warratnt paying for it.

I use the database on Microsoft works which jaws handles to a fashion
and enables me to use it quite well, but I have no luck with the
spreadsheet side of the program something simple as tabbing between
cells just does not work.

I am pretty sure there are not many people out there using this
program, but I felt that to someone who knows what what they are doing
could make this a lot better than what it is now.

Hi all,

In continued pursuit of scripting new applications, as always, I ask
what we need to be accessible or more accessible. Quickbooks is indeed
being scripted already and have teamed up with MyBlindSpot.org and
others to make this happen. Quicken and turbo tax is in the future,
but I am looking for a much needed application. I have done many music
related scripts, and all your suggestions are being taken into
consideration. I am not too familiar with sound editors and all that
you can do with the current ones. Keep in mind that we cannot script
web applications or web sites.

I was considering scripting open office for those that can't afford
Microsoft office and give a solution to those who can't afford
Microsoft office. Smaller applications that do simple tasks might not
make the cut since very few people will use them. Other programs such
as virus and spyware protectors Are out of the question since they change
too much.

So, I'm opening up the floor for discussion.

Let's hear some suggestions!

It is possible to using JAWS and administrate Virtual Private servers?

The company where I have my website hosted write about VPS there runs under
Linux and Windows, and if I select Windows, they othermore write about a
component called Plesk. Plesk is an tool where I can administrate the VPS.

Very thanks.

Hi, andre.
You might want to look in to Sibelius and Sibelius Speaking.
There's an e-mail list for Sib 5.25. The address is:
sib-access-request@freelists.org
Put "subscribe" in the subject line.
I'm a newbie to the program myself.

To John Martyn, or anyone who might know.

Is there scripting for music applications used for orchestral arrangements?
I am trying to write music that could be printed and given to an symphony
orchestra to play. Also is there anything for Masterwriter for lyric and
melody writing?

The last time I looked at Cake Talk with Sonar it wouldn't quite fully do
these things.

I've always wondered why Works has never been scripted. It seems to be

version to look at for scripting. I don't know how often it's updated.

Hi John

Microsoft Works has always amazed me why it does not work. I am not sure
if it is still shipped with new computers these days but I know it always
used to be. I have a version of it on this 3 year old hp windows 7
laptop.

I would ideally like the office suite but the amount I would use it really
does not warratnt paying for it.

I use the database on Microsoft works which jaws handles to a fashion and
enables me to use it quite well, but I have no luck with the spreadsheet
side of the program something simple as tabbing between cells just does
not work.

I am pretty sure there are not many people out there using this program,
but I felt that to someone who knows what what they are doing could make
this a lot better than what it is now.

Hi all,

In continued pursuit of scripting new applications, as always, I ask what
we
need to be accessible or more accessible. Quickbooks is indeed being
scripted already and have teamed up with MyBlindSpot.org and others to
make
this happen. Quicken and turbo tax is in the future, but I am looking for
a
much needed application. I have done many music related scripts, and all
your suggestions are being taken into consideration. I am not too familiar
with sound editors and all that you can do with the current ones. Keep in
mind that we cannot script web applications or web sites.

I was considering scripting open office for those that can't afford
Microsoft office and give a solution to those who can't afford Microsoft
office. Smaller applications that do simple tasks might not make the cut
since very few people will use them. Other programs such as virus and
spyware protectors Are out of the question since they change too much.

So, I'm opening up the floor for discussion.

Let's hear some suggestions!

Re: Mobile | Facebook

Adrian Spratt

It might help to think of it this way. Facebook and Google are two separate corporations.

Facebook is a social networking site that enables people to put up a page about themselves and to exchange contacts through that page. Google is known mainly as a search engine.

However, both companies stray into each other's territory. Facebook will soon be starting a search function that will rely heavily on information posted by Facebook members. Meanwhile, Google has already set up a social networking business through a service it calls Google Plus.

Facebook and Google see each other as competitors, so signing up for one definitely will not result in your being signed up for the other.

This is misleading information.

When I had version 9, I did not update my version of JAWS until version 12
was released. and, at the same time, I purchased an SMA for the next two
versions.

At the time I purchased the upgrades, I was not given a new 20 digit code by

the sales representative at Freedom Scientific. So, therefore, I am using
the original 20 digit code Freedom Scientific issued to me when they
released and sent me version 7.

Your authorization number only changes in the event you've let your SMA
lapse and need a new one. If you renew your existing one, you keep the
same
serial number and authorization number. I've had mine since I'm not
entirely
sure when and it's never changed. As for the authorization number, I think
FS will provide that to you over the phone if you ask for it. At least,
they
used to. That's kind of a non-issue over here since it's stored in a text
file, and that text file's in 5 or 6 different places, but I believe
that's
how I obtained it since, like you, I didn't keep the old install package
from a version of JAWS that was forever and a half ago, and I know I've
changed computers etc since then.

Different issue, Aidan. You're quite right that the number doesn't change.
I'm only agreeing with what I take to be Steve's point that we need
occasional reminders, such as each time a new version is shipped. I bet
most
JAWS users have trashed their old JAWS CD/DVD packages without remembering
that 6.0 had both a braille record of the authorization number and the
authorization disc.

As far as I get it, you will only get a new number once you either
upgrade, or once you get a new SMA. So if you have a active SMA wich
run for 2 years, then after 1 year, you will not get a new number
because the SMA is stil running. So the 20 digit number only change
when you upgrrade or renew SMA.

we shouldn't have to rely on the packaging of a JAWS release from seven
versions ago, nor should we have to wait through a whole weekend to
obtain
such basic information.

Hi Lauren,

For the upgrade from 2010 to 2013, sorry, I don't know.

For your second question, in outlook 2010 main window, simply type <ctrl+3>
and you will see the contacts. More generally, <ctrl+1> shows the mail,
<ctrl+2> shows the calendar, ... However, I don't know whether this depends
on the order these things are placed in the navigation pane.

HTH. Have a nice day. ChD

Subject: office and outlook 2010 questions

Hi:

I bought my Office 2010 Pro from Best Buy and you are supposed to get a free
upgrade to 2013 edition. Is there a way to find in Office a menu like to
upgrade or check for updates? I am using Windows 8 and Jaws 14 and can't
figure out with Jaws 14 or Windows 8 how to find this.

Also, in Outlook, is there an easy way to get to the address book so I can
add, modify and delete contacts?

Sincerely,

Lauren
