Re: Changing labels in form fields?

Tom Behler

Ted:

It's a ready-made data base, which is part of the problem.

I can't figure out how or why Jaws can read the labels if they are outside of the main data entry field.

But, that seems to be the case, which is why it is so difficult to change the label names.

Tom, is this a ready-made database, or do you roll your own? I presume it's the former. The only logging file I've ever used is one I cooked up some years ago in an old DBF-compatible database and ported over to Access, and I don't use it as often as I should. I know they have some slick programs out there at little or no cost, so I'll be interested in following this thread through to resolution.

That could very well be.

I may have to ask the designer of the software.

In Surf's Up, the instruction is for labeling forms in Html documents
such as web pages, so I don't know if that would work for your
program. It says to press insert+control+tab, type in the name you
want, and press enter.

Good luck!

Hi, everyone.

I am working with an amateur radio logging software program, and

How can I change the spoken labels for form fields?

The labels spoken in the software as it is now configured are a bit
cumbersome, and I want to customize them and make them shorter and
easier to identify as I tab from one data entry field to the next.

I have tried to find the answer in the Jaws help files, but have yet
to come up with a clear solution.

Not so, I also have some 64 bit SAPI voices from Cepstral,

The main limitation I am aware of is a lack of 64 bit variants of the
RealSpeak voices that use the SAPI interface. I do find this somewhat
annoying as the RS voices (especially Emily) are the natural sounding
voices I am most happy with.

Do you mind me asking the reason for wanting to change the narrator voice?
is it actually for narrator or so that when using third party programs like
games etc it uses a different sappy voice,as I know the real speak voices
that used to be shipped with older versions of jaws (version 8 and earlier
I think) used to be able to be installed on my xp machine and these could

The reason you can not use Vocalizer voices with narrator is that
they use a custom programming interface not SAPI, this has nothing to
do with whether the system is 32 or 64 bits. Note that on a 32 bit
system you might well have the same voices available in narrator
(Daniel, Tom, Emily etc) but those would be SAPI variants.

To replace Anna on 64 bit windows you have to have 64 bit SAPI voices,
but yes it can be replaced (I use ivona kendra on those rare occasions
where I am using narrator).

It can be done either in the narrator voice settings dialog or it will
use whatever is set as the system default SAPI voice.

Re: Can Narrator's voice be replaced in a 64-bit Windows 7 system?

Soronel Haetir

The reason you can not use Vocalizer voices with narrator is that
they use a custom programming interface not SAPI, this has nothing to
do with whether the system is 32 or 64 bits. Note that on a 32 bit
system you might well have the same voices available in narrator
(Daniel, Tom, Emily etc) but those would be SAPI variants.

Strictly for Narrator, because I can't stand the default Anna. As Soronel
wrote, and as I read online, it seems the only voices you can use for
Narrator on a 64-bit Win7 system are the 64-bit variety.

Hi,

Do you mind me asking the reason for wanting to change the narrator voice?
is it actually for narrator or so that when using third party programs like
games etc it uses a different sappy voice,as I know the real speak voices
that used to be shipped with older versions of jaws (version 8 and earlier
I think) used to be able to be installed on my xp machine and these could be
used and I believe there is a way of getting them installed on a 64bit

Re: JAWS and Dectalk Express not speaking letters with accents; update

Soronel Haetir

The problem I see with the .spl solution is that you could make it say
"accented e" or something, but it would be very difficult to make it
actually pronounce the letter.

And of course I have no idea what the synthesizers that don't
recognize such letters do when they occur in words. Letter by letter
movement is the exception not the rule.

On 2/6/13, Adrian Spratt <Adrian@adrianspratt.com> wrote:
FS's John Carson followed up yesterday about my query. He said that the
only
way to have Dectalk Express speak these characters is to copy the numeric
equivalents into a file called Dectalk.sbl, with .sbl standing for symbols.
One possibility, he said, thinking out loud, might be to copy the
equivalent
file from Eloquence. I emphasize he was speculating.

I have a distant memory of this problem coming up in a long-ago version of
JAWS, but I can't remember the fix. It wasn't this one, but I credit John
for thinking of it.

Meanwhile, I followed up my Dectalk Express query with a similar query on
the same ticket number about Vocalizer. Late last night FS sent an email
saying they would look into it.

For anyone interested in whether Dectalk Express can run on a 64-bit Win7
machine, the answer is resounding yes, with the one exception that I can't
read accented letters. To make the synthesizer work, you need to install a
serial converter. Be sure that the serial converter is set for Win7.

I'm fairly new on the list. I know the archives are stored on http://lists.the-jdh.com/pipermail/jfw_lists.the-jdh.com/ but there isn't a search field on that page.

I tried using the 'site' option in a google search, and that helps but it also searches other lists on jfw, not just the jaws list. For example, I tried to search the archives on how to search the archives, if that makes sense. I used this query in google:

site:http://lists.the-jdh.com/pipermail/jfw_lists.the-jdh.com/ how search archives

Is there a better way to search?

Re: Using Jaws 14

I get a similar message about JAWS authorization but infrequently. I was
told by someone from FS it had something to do with the anti-virus program I
was running. I restarted my computer and the problem was resolved. But I
never had the problem where it was asking for authorization all the time.
Still, you might want to check the anti-virus you're using.

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

Tom, is this a ready-made database, or do you roll your own? I presume it's the former. The only logging file I've ever used is one I cooked up some years ago in an old DBF-compatible database and ported over to Access, and I don't use it as often as I should. I know they have some slick programs out there at little or no cost, so I'll be interested in following this thread through to resolution.
