Kevin,

Not sure this is at all related to JAWS. Suggest you look in the
Tools/Options area of WLM for your preferences, or in the View Menu.

Hi. Using JAWS 14 and Windows 7, I find that JAWS won't read letters with
accents and other symbols. For example, it won't tell me that the last
character of this word is e acute:

Engagé

On my system, JAWS leaves that last character silent.

When I had JAWS 13 and XP, JAWS would tell me that this symbol is e acute.

I know JAWS doesn't pronounce most words with symbols properly when reading
by word, line, etc. That's another issue.

Any ideas how I can get JAWS to speak these characters?

Fortunately I have not installed Itunes then. I considered it when I learned of the scripts being free. quicktime alternative and my regular media player will have to do then. Free content that is ... *g*

I'm writing this post to suggest how to avoid a problem when seeking
assistance from FS Tech Support. Let me preface it by saying that I found
the person I spoke to this morning responsive and, to the extent he could
be, helpful.

The rep suspected that my particular problem lay in personal settings that
JAWS maintains in the ENU folder. He instructed me to go there and then to
delete the contents. I hesitated and said that I had some files in there
that I wanted to save, such as default.jdf and placemarkers. So he had me
copy the contents and go through a process whereby they were placed in a
folder called ENU copy, as I recall. After the call, I was able to return
the contents of that copy folder to my basic ENU folder.

The moral of the tale? Don't automatically delete anything when an FS rep
tells you to. Instead, have them help you set up a backup copy.

I have been asked why I don't go to FS Tech Support with this or that
issue.
This is an example of my reasons, but also the antidote: Maintain control
of
the conversation, and don't assume they know best. With that as a given,
they seem to be a decent group of people who want to help.

buying on ebay & Jaws

Crystal French

Hi,
I’ve never had an issue purchasing items on ebay, until now.
I am using windows 7, Jaws 13, and IE 9.
Everything seems to work as usual, but when I went to the “buy it now” nothing worked as before.
I turned on the Jaws cursor and there does seem to be some text about reviewing the buy it now information, but it didn’t read well and I did not find the commit to buy button.
Thanks if anyone knows what is going on.

I have been asked why I don't go to FS Tech Support with this or that issue.
This is an example of my reasons, but also the antidote: Maintain control of
the conversation, and don't assume they know best. With that as a given,
they seem to be a decent group of people who want to help.

Tom would need to use the JAWS cursor to read through the labels
character
by character and then type them into the original field in the JAWS
Dictionary. The only drawback to this approach might be that if the
text of
any of the original labels appears anywhere else in the program, he will

hear his replacement text spoken.

Tom,

Thanks for following up. Not to belabor the idea, which was brought up
by
John Falter, but you might want to try one more time. All you're
saying to
JAWS is, when you see this set of characters, read them this new way
rather
than the way you normally do. Where the characters are located
shouldn't
matter. I find that when a dictionary entry hasn't worked for me, it's
because there's a non-character symbol in the string that I've copied
over,
such as a return key. If you either manually type the characters into
the
"Add" field of the dictionary or strip out any codes, I believe you'll
succeed.

1. Select and copy the text of one of the labels you wish to change.

2. Ensure focus stays on the application.

3. Open the JAWS dictionary with JAWS key+d and press enter.

4. Press JAWS key+numpad 8 and you'll hear "Add." Press spacebar.

5. Tab once and type in the text with which you wish to replace the
label
text.

6. Press enter, then control-s for save, then alt-F4 to exit the
dictionary.

If that works, you can change the other labels without exiting the
dictionary.

Hi, everyone.

I am working with an amateur radio logging software program, and
have
what I think is a pretty simple question:

How can I change the spoken labels for form fields?

The labels spoken in the software as it is now configured are a
bit
cumbersome, and I want to customize them and make them shorter and
easier to identify as I tab from one data entry field to the next.

I have tried to find the answer in the Jaws help files, but have
yet
to
come up with a clear solution.

Update. It turns out that Eloquence speaks the symbols, but Dectalk Express
does not in 64-bit Win7, although it used to in 32-bit XP. FS has written up

Adrian,

I know this doesn't help, but in character-by-character movement, I do hear
the letter properly pronounced. I wonder if you need to change your
punctuation level, or perhaps enable something else in the text dialog in
the settings center?

I want to thank Mike for his resource that he provided in his previous
message. The link to Blind Tv may prove to be a valuable resource for audio
described television, I am still looking for an accessible tv tuner, or at
least one that would work well with JAWS, in order to watch the local tv
stations, and to recoird that programming. Case in point, my fiancé and I
like Lawrence Welk, which is re-run on our local PBS station. That show is
not streamed anywhere online, as near as I can tell. I’ve considered
getting the Avertv Hybrid Volar Max TV Tuner Kit from Amazon. Does anyone
know anything about this particular unit. According to Amazon it is a
starter kit. This means it only comes with the tuner. That’s okay as I
have Windows Mediacenter, my tv antenna, and a converter box. I also have
the coaxial cable needed to hook it altogether. I was able to find some
files on keystroke commands for Windows Mediacenter. If you happen to know
about this product, or any others like it, I’d appreciate any and all
suggestions. Thanks in advance for your feedback.
